The Investment Issue

Investment, by definition, is the act of devoting time, effort, energy, or finances to a particular undertaking with the expectation of a worthwhile result. We can invest in a lot of things, such as our community, our relationships, our finances, and our health, with the hope that the effort will have a positive impact. We can invest in our community by supporting local businesses, schools, and organizations. We can serve the community through volunteerism and investment in future generations. Investing in our finances helps create wealth, meet long-term financial goals, and secure retirement. On a personal level, we can invest in our families and enrich relationships by giving time and effort to the people in our lives that mean the most to us. This type of investment has the most meaningful impact not only on ourselves but also on the people closest to us.

As I get older, my priorities have changed. I used to care about the car I drove. My Passat gets me from point A to point B just fine right now. Our house used to be bigger, but with fewer kids at home and mostly dogs now, we downsized a bit in our move slightly west to Minnetrista. I know the material things matter less, and the experiences and relationships I have matter more. I invest in family, friends, my work, and my faith. What are you investing in?

While investing in ourselves, relationships, community, and finances can look very different from person to person, the effort we put into these areas of our lives is made with the common goal of having a positive impact that yields results. In this issue, we wanted to share some of the ways that we can invest in our community, our finances, and with those we love.

We sit down with renowned local architect Charles Stinson and learn how his love for the lake inspires stunning designs that grace the shores of Lake Minnetonka. Excelsior Paint & Design shares small investments you can make in your home that make a big impact, and we learn how the partnership between Community for The Commons and the City of Excelsior is investing in our community through beautiful Excelsior Commons Park. Plus, we share how to invest in yourself from head to toe, and, of course, you won’t want to miss Jen’s latest “Life Minded” column: A Cut Above.

See you around the Lake!

FROM ANXIETY TO EASE, HOW BRUSH DENTAL STUDIO REDEFINES WHAT IT MEANS TO GO TO THE DENTIST

New in

Lake Minnetonka: Brush Dental Studio

NOW OPEN | HEALTH + WELLNESS
16
““Natural light, soothing colors, and carefully selected furnishings contribute to a calming atmosphere, alleviating the typical apprehension often associated with dental visits.”

For many, the prospect of visiting the dentist can evoke feelings of anxiety or apprehension. However, Brush Dental Studio is on a mission to rewrite this narrative, ensuring that every visitor walks through their doors feeling cared for and at ease.

Since opening in the summer of 2023, Brush Dental Studio has received resounding acclaim for its dedication to patient comfort and satisfaction. Shannon Toftely, the patient experience coordinator, reflects, “Our journey has been enriched by the positive response and encouragement from our community, and we are deeply grateful for the trust they have placed in us.”

Brush Dental Studio’s aim is to shatter the mold of the traditional, sterile dental office experience. Creating a space that radiates warmth and hospitality has been paramount to their approach. “Our thoughtfully crafted design elements aim to evoke a sense of tranquility, warmth, and nature,” shares Shannon. Their commitment to comfort is evident from the moment patients step through their doors, with the inclusion of the “Brush Brews and Snack Bar” to help ease any pre-appointment jitters.

Every detail within their studio, from the inviting lounge area adorned with a cozy fireplace and snug neck wraps to the vibrant reception desk, transforms the typical dental visit into a spa-like retreat. “Natural light, soothing colors, and carefully selected furnishings contribute to a calming atmosphere, alleviating the typical apprehension often associated with dental visits,” explains Shannon.

In addition to the soothing environment, Brush Dental Studio takes the extra step to enhance the patient experience through the introduction of the Comfort Menu. This carefully curated selection offers personalized amenities tailored to individual preferences and needs. From soothing blankets to aromatherapy, noise-canceling headphones, warm neck wraps, and overhead TVs, the Comfort Menu is designed to elevate the overall comfort level, ensuring each patient feels genuinely cared for.

This fusion of luxury and efficiency is aimed at alleviating even the most apprehensive patients’ fears. “Our goal is for patients to enter our office and immediately feel a positive shift in their mood, fostering confidence in the care they are about to receive. At Brush Dental Studio, we’re committed to revolutionizing the dental experience, one comfortable visit at a time.”

The welcoming atmosphere that Brush Dental Studio has created sets the stage for patients to receive the best dental care possible. Brush Dental Studio only uses top-notch technology and tools for their patients, and they take the time to address any concerns and needs.

“State-of-the-art dental equipment not only ensures the highest quality of care but also reflects our dedication to staying at the forefront of advancements in oral healthcare,” says Shannon. “Cutting-edge technology, from digital diagnostics to advanced treatment modalities, not only improves efficiency but also contributes to a more streamlined and comfortable patient experience.”

Maintaining dental hygiene is extremely important to overall health and wellness, and by removing the “scary” factor that can come with visiting the dentist, Brush Dental Studio hopes to get more people taking regular care of their teeth. “Taking care of teeth goes beyond aesthetics; it is a fundamental aspect of self-care,” says Shannon. “Regular dental check-ups, proper oral hygiene practices, and a balanced diet not only contribute to a beautiful smile but also form the cornerstone of preventive healthcare.”

Brush Dental Studio welcomes new patients, providing flexible appointments throughout the week, including Saturdays, with a special dedication to accommodating emergency cases. You’ll enjoy a comprehensive range of dental services from routine exams and cleanings to advanced treatments such as orthodontics, Invisalign, cosmetic dentistry, implants, sleep apnea services, and extractions. Visit brushdentalstudio.com for more information and to request an appointment.

INSPIRATION to INSTALLATION

After a long day of work, it’s a joy to settle into a house that feels like home. Whether your family is always on the move or you’re more of a homebody, feeling comfortable in your own home makes all the difference. And turning your home into a place you love doesn’t have to be a chore. With some help from Excelsior Paint & Design, small investments can turn your home into a space you can’t wait to come home to.

Fourteen years ago, Carolyn Manhattan, with encouragement from her husband, bought Excelsior Paint & Design. The company — first started in the 1940s — has thrived with the support of the community, and especially because of dedicated and passionate people like Carolyn.

“I get to use my love of color and design and help people make their homes into what they want to live with. And it’s a great, fun privilege and adventure. When they say ‘do what you love,’ I second that totally,” Carolyn says.

Excelsior Paint & Design offers a curated selection of carpet and flooring, countertops, backsplashes, window treatments, paints, and much more. And while each product has an abundance of options, Carolyn and her team have designed their store so you’ll never feel overwhelmed with the selections.

“With the way I set the store up, people are not exposed to 50 million choices, but it’s lined up by color. We’ve deliberately curated the store to make the process for the customer less overwhelming,” Carolyn says.

Right from the get-go, the Excelsior Paint & Design team spends time getting to know each client. Learning the who (who your family is and how they live), what (what you want updated), and why (why you want to transform your home) for every person who walks in the door is what has made Excelsior Paint & Design so successful.

Once the team has gotten to know your lifestyle and your ideas for fixing up your home, the fun can begin!

According to Carolyn, some easy upgrades to freshen up your home include new carpet, paint, countertops, and window treatments.

HOME UPDATE | HOME + DESIGN

Interior Design by Jessica Tewes-Francis. jtfdesignstudio.com

If you’ve chosen to update your carpet, it’s important to consider how the room will be used. If you want more of a designer look, consider something stylized and high-end. If you have kids and dogs running through the house, choose something slightly sturdier or more durable. At Excelsior Paint & Design you’ll be able to pick from various colors, textures, and patterns.

If you’ve decided a fresh coat of paint is the best way to liven up a room, you’ll want to consider how the new color will complement your existing furniture and decor.

New countertops in your kitchen or bathroom can help completely transform the space. With options such as stone, wood, and recycled countertops, you’ll be able to find the perfect color, pattern, and material for your home.

Window treatments such as blinds, shades, and shutters are another option when updating a room. They can make an enormous visual impact and help soften a room. And in addition to deciding on the style of window treatment, the functionality, room size, light control, and privacy are all elements to consider.

Often, homeowners will want to update several of these at one time, and the team at Excelsior Paint & Design is more than happy to help select and install them. However, Carolyn does suggest starting in phases with simple swaps and expanding from there.

“I always encourage people to choose the option that has the least choices — carpet only comes in maybe 14 colors, paint comes in 2,000 colors. It’s easier to find paint to go with carpet than it is to find carpet to go with paint,” she continues, “When people find something they love, everything else falls into place.”

And according to Carolyn, there’s never a wrong time to update your home. Whether you’ve just bought a new home, realized your taste has changed over time, or are hosting an event, investing in your home can completely change how you feel when you walk in the door.

Investing in your home can be as easy and economical or as expensive as you want it to be. Excelsior Paint & Design is eager to help transform your home with whatever price point you choose because, as Carolyn says, “We all deserve to live in well-designed, comfortable, happy homes.”

Outdoor Escapes

EXPERT TIPS FROM WACONIA LANDSCAPING CO. ON HOW TO CREATE YOUR OWN OUTDOOR OASIS

With only a short time to enjoy our lovely state without being buried in several layers of fleece and down-stuffed jackets, getting outside at every possible opportunity is high on the list once spring hits. And to help ensure you love every moment, Justin Goche, owner of Waconia Landscaping Co. shares his expert insight on big and small ways you can invest in landscaping to transform your outdoor living space into an oasis.

Starting with small ways to spruce up your landscaping, Justin recommends every homeowner begin with simple projects. “On your basic spring prep list, freshen up your yard by raking up dead leaves from the fall, remove dead perennial debris, prep spring fertilizers and crabgrass preventer, boot up the sprinkler system, set up the patio furniture, and get the grill out,” says Justin.

But beyond your basic spring prep list, Justin advises, “First, determine your landscaping goals. Do you want to freshen up your own yard or hire out? Are you hoping to make your home marketable to sell or looking to completely revamp your yard? Analyze your current landscape plan. Ask yourself, what works for you, and what would you like to change?”

If you’re sticking with simple projects this spring, Justin suggests one great way to revitalize and elevate your landscaping is with fun, new plants. “Visit local garden centers and check out the selection to see how they would fit within your current landscape design,” says Justin. “Adding in plants is a great way to make your yard pop. Salvias and native plants like cone flowers are easy to take care of. While salvias don’t spread, be aware some plants like rudbeckia (black-eyed Susan) can spread easily!”

OUTDOOR LIVING | HOME SERVICES
26

But, if this is the spring you’re ready to overhaul your yard and make a big investment in your landscape design, Justin advises you to envision the experience you hope to have. “Do you imagine yourself making memories by the pool, enjoying a cozy evening around the bonfire, or having a meal on the patio every night? Knowing what you’re designing your dream yard for will help guide where you put your investment,” says Justin.

Once you’ve determined your landscaping goals, next comes the budget. “No matter if you hire out or go DIY, it’s a good idea to understand the time and money you want to invest into your landscaping,” Justin says. “Many homeowners love gardening and reaping the fruits of their labor while others would rather hire a professional to help create their grand vision.”

Whether you decide to cultivate your green thumb or hire the professionals, Justin says the final step is creating and executing a plan. “Put it on the calendar for when you’re going to do each step, or if you’re hiring out, connect with a professional to get the plan going. We have such a short season. You want to maximize the time you can enjoy your outdoor space and get the most out of your investment.”

Justin’s knowledgeable staff is ready to help with tips for any of your DIY landscaping projects, and if you’d like to hand off the project, they’re happy to help create your own outdoor oasis. Justin shares, “One of my favorite parts is helping our clients create a space they love where they can make those lasting memories.”

INVEST IN WATER: EXPLORING CHARLES STINSON’S ARCHITECTURAL ARTISTRY ON LAKE MINNETONKA Corey Gaffer Photography
30

Lakeview Ave.

Acclaimed architect Charles Stinson has designed projects all over the country and abroad, yet Minnesota remains close to his heart, especially with his roots growing up in Red Wing, MN. “There is something about the whole culture here. I love the variety of the seasons. All of it. The snow, the rain, the longer days and shorter days. I even enjoy the cloudy days. People just feel more connected to nature here. I’ve seen and lived in other places, but they don’t hold me like Minnesota does.”

The feeling is mutual, as many of his stunning designs grace the Lake Minnetonka area. His process is a fusion of old-school and new-school genius.

Each project still begins with Charles crafting hand-colored drawings. Architect Chuck Thiss and team turn those drawings into 3-D computer models. What follows is a myriad of professionals, including structural engineers, interior designers, and landscape experts, all working together as the process unfolds.

One of the most critical decisions is where the house will be situated.

For lake properties, Charles stands on the site to determine the best orientation, considering views onto the water and views from

the lakeside. It’s a full sensory process as he considers how the home will be used as well as how it will look.

“I try to be out there at different times of day. I stand with my arms out and move back and forth until I find the orientation I’m looking for. Then I do it again. If I find the same thing twice, that’s it. I imagine the functions living between the leaves, imagining how the homeowners want to live.”

In addition to remarkable projects for clients, Charles designed the lake home that he and his wife currently enjoy. “In our house, we wanted it to

feel like a summer camp more than a house. We have a nautical feel inside. A lot of built-ins. Our grandson said it feels like the inside of a ship.”

Outside, the Stinsons spend time sitting around the campfire, having picnics, playing pickleball, and taking in a variety of wildlife sightings. Charles says, “Being on the lake is a dream come true.”

“The lake is such an incredible amenity. Open to everyone. All seasons. Something to protect for everyone. It slows us down and allows us to appreciate nature. “

Charles says, “Building a house is not for the weak of heart. You have to have incredible faith to step into the unknown. Believe in the invisible. But if you keep it simple and elegant to scale and allow the architecture to get out of the way, nature will do the hard work.”

Charles’ name is on the door, but he is crystal clear that this work is that of great collaboration with talented colleagues, engaging clients, and the great outdoors. His philosophy is, “The best idea wins.” The fusion of all of these ideas ensures the very best views are the ones from home.

INVESTING IN COMMUNITY

“Time,” they say, waits for no one; you can’t stop it, nor can you catch it! But what you can do with time is spend it with others. Only 170 years ago, city leaders of Excelsior had the foresight to make an “investment in people” by deciding not to build homes along 13 acres of its shoreline. Instead, a beautiful park

“It’s an investment in community where connections are passed on from one generation to the next.”

we know as The Excelsior Commons was established, keeping the area natural. Rather than earmarking the land for commercial gain, they realized the importance of having a place to spend an afternoon with family or in self-reflection. Can’t you imagine women in long dresses with their parasols, children, and well-dressed husbands walking through the park on any given Sunday, a scene that world-renowned artist Georges Seurat painted many times?

To create such a beautiful destination, the City of Excelsior partners with the Community for The Commons, a park conservancy that works with the city to help improve and manage The Commons. Together, they work to protect and preserve the park’s historical relevance while investing in enhancements and improvements for generations to come. And this partnership has allowed a space for countless events, activities, and memories: a place for the community to connect.

There’s something for everyone at the Excelsior Commons. Connected to bustling Water Street, you’ll see the entire community come out any given day to grab a latte or enjoy some retail therapy and make their way down to the park for a full day of enjoyment along Lake Minnetonka’s beautiful shoreline. The Commons offers two swimming beaches, softball, youth baseball, basketball, walking paths, swings, a playground, and tennis courts. The Port of Excelsior has kayaking and paddle boats, and if you are looking for a bit of leisure, why not schedule a scenic lake cruise? There are spaces for family gatherings, reunions, and even weddings.

Other amenities include a new pavilion, plaza, public restrooms, and firepits with comfortable benches. Throughout the summer, the popular “Donation Yoga” program is held two to three times a week, typically on the lawn unless it’s raining, where it is then held in the pavilion. If you love music, you

can get your groove on eight Wednesdays throughout the summer at the “Excelsior Concerts in the Commons.” Sponsored by the Excelsior Morning Rotary Club, which donates half of the proceeds to the Excelsior Commons Master Plan, the long-term shared vision for the future of the park.

If playing softball, baseball, or just watching a game is your thing, take in a free game in the park. Or, if you love to read and appreciate flowers, you may want to open your book while sitting on a bench with a view of one of the many gardens in the park. An incredible army of volunteers known as “The Uncommon Gardeners” create and maintain the beautiful and important botanicals.

You’ve heard it often takes a village of likeminded individuals to get something done. The Excelsior Commons exists because of the City of Excelsior, the partnership with the Community for The Commons, 800 donors, and dozens of volunteers. “It’s an investment in community where connections are passed on from one generation to the next, and it’s a place where one can invest in their own mental and physical well-being,” says Sheila McMillan, the Chair of the Board of Directors for Community for The Commons.

Creating a beautiful environment where we can relax and connect might be the best investment for our community and for generations to come. I am just one of many who have a history with this park. I taught tennis to thousands of local families, many of whom I now see as adults playing at The Commons. Learning to swim at Excelsior beach, always attending the 4th of July fireworks, and I’ve continued the tradition, bringing my children to the park every year, creating those unforgettable moments like so many others who love coming to The Excelsior Commons. I recently purchased a knife that I’m very excited about. This is a sign of becoming firmly middle-aged. When I was twenty-five years old, I had cheap knives and thought people who got enthusiastic about knives or lamps or

pillows were sad and needed to get out more. But I’m not sad and I don’t want to get out at all. I’m excited about my knife, and I’m quite proud of my purchase.

Not to brag…but it’s a Shun Premier 5.5” Nakiri. It’s like a trophy wife but for the kitchen, making all other utensils seem plain. I want to show it off to friends and neighbors. I can now slice limes so thin you’d be able

to read these words through the flesh. I have no idea why you would ever want to - but it would be possible.

If high style is marked by a mixture of expensive and bargain finds, then my kitchen drawers are full of the highest style. I have a can opener from 1995 that is cornflower blue because my kitchen was blue in 1995, and I must have thought my gadgets must match the hideous wallpaper border. It still works. It was less than $2. My mom gifted me a set of Peugeot salt and pepper grinders last year. They were much more than $2 and are works of art. I have two Chinese spider strainers that I’ve had for over ten years that were worth every dime. But I’ve blown through many, many spatulas, treating them as if they were single-use paper towels. And I’ve loved, used, and broken four French presses. Not everything lasts.

I am now quite critical when I assess wedding registries. These sweet lambs register for some of the dumbest things. I know because that is exactly what we did, and I know what they can’t possibly know yet. They aren’t

going to have 16 people over for margaritas very often, but… a quality wetdry vac? That thing will become their best friend. So as I’m selecting gifts, I try to choose something desired, but also something that is practical.

Worth it: Good pans but not a set of 12. Who has room for that? A cast iron skillet. A beautiful wooden salad bowl. Quality knives. Soft towels. A Kitchen Aid mixer.

Not worth it:  Appliances that only do one thing. Dishes that have to be hand washed. Dishes that can’t go in the microwave. Dishes that don’t fit in a dishwasher. (Yes, I had some of those.) Sheets that cost more than a car payment. White throw blankets. A beautiful white throw is so pretty in a photo. But these young people will make the mistake of having friends or having children, and someone will use that white faux fur blanket to mop up a root beer float.

We used to heed advice on such household investments from experts. Martha Stewart could recommend a Dutch oven or a cutting board, and she appears to know her way around

a kitchen. Christopher Kimball, in his test kitchen, could warn against gimmick gadgets. Ina Garten. Julia Child. Gordon Ramsay. Our parents. All of these experts were experts. Now my kids say things like, “I saw this on TikTok, so I bought one.”  Help. Me. Because now we own a chopper slicer dicer thing with 20 impossible-to-wash parts because some bonehead in a dank basement said it’s trending.

And it is trending, but that doesn’t mean it’s good. Also, nobody should be eating a stir fry cooked in a dorm room under a ring light. Even if it was cooked by someone attractive with a lot of followers. I’m just genuinely delighted when things work. It’s the little things. And this knife works like a dream.

You would think this missive is sponsored by the knife company. It isn’t. But it is sheer joy to have invested in something of the highest quality. It’s looking like I’m still on the hook for slicing vegetables for this household for a while and it will be nice to do so in style.

I really must line item this beauty in my will. My kids will have to rotate custody.

Treat Yourself from Head to Toe

We share our favorite ways to invest in yourself

In a world obsessed with fast-forward, self-care can often become a lost train of thought. Parents, entrepreneurs, employees, and students alike, we all seem to be getting busier, and our to-do lists are getting longer.

Investing in ourselves can be seen in a variety of ways. We’ve learned from Gary Chapman’s 5 Languages of Love that we all give and receive love differently. So, let’s not forget the importance of taking care of ourselves so that we can show up as our best for the people who need us the most.

Let’s start from the top: Hair at  18/8 Fine Men’s Salon in Wayzata.

“Our mantra is, ‘We help men be their best,’” says founder Andrew Hulse. Imagine stepping into a tranquil space,

From carefully hand-mixed shades that flatter your unique complexion to expertly crafted cuts and extensions tailored to your desires, Moda prioritizes achieving the look you’ve always envisioned.

greeted by cozy, semi-private stations. Each appointment is fully dedicated to their clients, allowing their expert stylists to truly connect and uncover one’s individual needs and desires. Forget rushed services – visitors enjoy undivided attention throughout their visit. “We view the haircut as an important part of how men view themselves and their confidence. It is not utilitarian,” says Andrew. Explore other services, including scalp treatments, manicures, specialized hair coloring, and more. https://eighteeneight.com/wayzata-mn/

For the ladies, head to  Moda Salon in St. Louis Park Moda Salon takes customization to the next level, creating memorable experiences beyond just “pretty hair.” From carefully hand-mixed shades that flatter your unique complexion to expertly crafted cuts and extensions tailored to your desires, Moda prioritizes achieving the look you’ve always envisioned. A trip to this salon isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s an investment in discovering what makes you feel beautiful, uplifted, inspired, and confident. https://www.modamademn.com/

Moving down to makeup, Jett Beauty in Excelsior has you covered.

A sanctuary of beauty and wellness, as clients step inside Jett Beauty, they are greeted by a welcoming reception area adorned with top skincare and makeup products and calming scents directly from Italy. The ambiance is serene. An escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. “Our services offer everyday time-saving benefits that help you feel and look your best,” says founder Amy Kelly. Their services extend beyond convenience. For individuals facing physical limitations like vision impairment or motor

skill challenges, their technicians offer assistance in applying makeup. “Our clients feel that they are in capable hands and receive exceptional care,” says Kelly. https://jettbeauty.com/

For your skin care, head to Bella on the Bay in Excelsior Missi Davis purchased Bella on the Bay in 2008 as her “perfect next step.” A multi-layered spa salon in the heart of Excelsior, Bella on the Bay is home to one of the West Metro’s best facials, the “Signature Facial.” Whether you’re looking to get top-tier nail treatments, try a new hairstyle, or indulge in a hot oil massage, Bella on the Bay is here for you. https://www.bellaonthebay.com/

Now for the finishing touch, a great wardrobe.   Amore & Fede has been a staple of Excelsior for 17 years. A family-run business, you can find owner Debbie Slusar managing the shop alongside her husband and daughter. Feeling good starts from within, but a wellloved outfit can definitely boost your mood! “We love to help women feel and look good in the clothing they purchase from us.” https://amorefede.com/

For the fellas, Minnesota-born clothing company Hammer Made has attracted stylists who pride themselves on being experts in the field of personal transformation. It takes an expert to guide an individual towards styles, from shirts to sports coats, that not only flatter their stature but also empower them to feel their best.

“Up to 20% of guys have some color blindness and need help determining what looks good. Our stylists also know the proper fit of a sport coat or when a slim fit is needed over a regular fit,” says Ridgedale Store Manager Gill Magill. https://www.hammermade.com/

So, just remember to hit pause in the hustle and invest in yourself — from head to toe!
