LIFESTYLE LETTER
Health & Wellness For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons, and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. We approached this issue of Lake Minnetonka Lifestyle from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional, and mental health. As I age, I fondly remember myself a few pounds ago. If I look in the mirror and squint just right, I can see a 30-year-old with no advancing gray beyond the temples and fewer lines around the eyes. Then I realize I’ve earned all those crevices and cracks and a bit of excess around the middle. The most important thing is how I feel and what I can still do. As long as I can enjoy the company of my wife, kids, and friends. As long as I can do the activities I enjoy, being beyond middle age suits me just fine. All I seek is a healthy balance of fun, faith, and fitness, enabling me to live my best life now. When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home, and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that move the needle - it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! It’s not the sometimes choices we make; it’s the most of the time choices. So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym AND enjoy that Raw Superfood Brownie at People’s Organic you’ve been wanting to try. It’s not what you do some days it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, filling, and fabulous year. Finally, I want to mention that we had an error in last month’s Realty Report and didn’t properly credit the listing broker in the sales reported. That error is corrected and reflected in this month’s Realty Report on page 51. Here’s to you, and a happy new year! I’ll see you around the Lake.

HOW HIGHMARK BUILDERS IS DESIGNING SPACES THAT INSPIRE FITNESS, WELLNESS, AND AN ACTIVE LIFESTYLE
ARTICLE BY KENDRA JOHNSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY LANDMARK PHOTOGRAPHY
As we jump into the new year, many of us will also be jumping into New Year’s resolutions. And while living a healthier lifestyle is a resolution many of us make every year, 2024 could be the year we finally accomplish it with the help of Highmark Builders.

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, office space was a must in the home. That trend has shifted to active spaces such as workout rooms, sports courts, saunas, steam rooms, and more. “Home fitness rooms have become a staple just as much as home offices have,” says Kelly McDermott, Senior Interior Designer at Ruby & Suede, a subsidiary of Highmark Companies. “People have come to appreciate the flexibility to be able to work out from home on their own schedule.” Highmark Builders recently helped one family remodel their home to add a spacious workout room and outdoor sports court to match the family’s active lifestyle. With a remodel, the team at Highmark Builders was tasked with finding ways to maximize the room’s space to accommodate a spacious workout room with abundant natural light, equipment, and open space. The most challenging part, according to Kelly, was laying out all of the equipment. Instead of running cords from one end of the room to the other, they placed several outlets on the floor to hide the cables from each machine. They were also tasked with matching the modern architecture of the existing house to the new workout room, which resulted in beautiful curved ceilings and large glass windows. Everything in the room was commercial grade with durable rubber flooring in the weights area and specialty hardwood floors outfitted in the areas with machines.

“The workout room creates an inspiring space that you want to be in that is exciting to get up and go workout in,” Kelly says. In addition to workout rooms, the team at Highmark is seeing an increased interest in sports courts and saunas. Sports courts — basketball, tennis, pickleball, squash, and more — are especially popular among young, active families, according to Sandy Mahoney, Project Development at Highmark Builders. And with the right conversation and collaboration, a sports court can be incorporated to best fit your family’s needs.
18
H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | HOME + D E SIGN
For example, Highmark Builders has completed sports courts that open up to an entertaining space while others are closed off from the home to create a secluded sanctuary space. Saunas and steam rooms, like sports courts and exercise rooms, can be incorporated into various areas of the home depending on your family’s needs. “We’ve actually done a fair amount of saunas. Sometimes, they are incorporated into the workout room or into a bathroom. And I think that certainly is part of living a healthy lifestyle,” Kelly says.
If you’re considering adding a workout room, sports court, or sauna to your new construction home or remodel, it’s important to know how you want to use the spaces and what aspects are most important to you. “Incorporating exercise and a healthy lifestyle into your home — you can do it at different investment levels. You could carve out a small space in your home without a significant investment or do
an addition and really blow it out. It’s something that almost any family can do by creatively re-inventing spaces,” says Sandy. To make good on those New Year’s resolutions, consider making your home a healthy place to live. The team at Highmark Builders is prepared to help you achieve your goals and give you the home that will help you live your best life. https://highmarkbuilders.com

HOW THE TEAM AT NOTHING BUT HEMP IS HELPING THE COMMUNITY THROUGH CBD

“Our product s are top of the line, vegan, organic - no ar t if icial st uf f. Ours are some of the cleanest edibles you c an f ind .”
Before Tyson Archer opened Nothing But Hemp in Chaska, he was a customer first. “As I was going through my 20s, my anxiety began getting worse and worse, and some back pain started to emerge,” shares Tyson. “I didn’t want to start on any medications, so I went to a Nothing But Hemp shop and tried my first CBD tincture. I started feeling better on the drive home. After that, I became a regular user of CBD products.” Tyson opened the store with his aunt Julie, who had also discovered the benefits of CBD. Together, they’ve helped countless people feel relief they couldn’t achieve through traditional approaches. “A lot of our customers come to us in pain, or they can’t sleep or suffer from anxiety. When they’ve tried other methods, and nothing has worked, they come to us to see if we could be a potential solution,” says Tyson. “My favorite part of the job is hearing the success stories of customers who could come off anti-anxiety medications, who could stop taking 12 to 15 Aleve a day, or that they’ve finally had a good night’s sleep.” Nothing But Hemp has become a trusted name in the industry. “Our products are top of the line, vegan, organic — no artificial stuff. Ours are some of the cleanest edibles you can find. You know exactly what you’re getting. Our products provide a summary of third-party lab test results and a QR code where you can see down to the percentage of every cannabinoid that’s in it.” Tyson explains CBD’s benefits derive from anti-inflammatory properties, making it helpful for so many things in the body. “In layman’s terms, when you introduce cannabinoids to the body, they activate the endocannabinoid system, a biological system that helps your body maintain homeostasis and keeps all your other systems functioning correctly. If you’re not introducing cannabinoids to your body, things can start going out of whack. CBD offers a course correction.”
Tyson and every member of the staff are welltrained and incredibly knowledgeable. If you’ve never tried CBD products, Nothing But Hemp is a great place to begin and learn everything you need to know from the experts. “We first always have a conversation with you. We get to know who you are and why you’re here so we can recommend the right products and give you the best solution to your needs,” assures Tyson. “I like to say we’re the antismoke shop. You’ll walk into a bright, open, inviting space. We’re not there just to sell you something. We pride ourselves on helping people, and that’s always the number one priority for us.” While the staff at Nothing But Hemp will always customize their recommendations depending on the person and their needs, Tyson advises when starting out to go low and go slow. You don’t need to go with the strongest right off the bat. You’ll find a variety of great products, from tinctures to edibles. “We have a lot of fun new products coming out in the edibles space with unique gummies, and the beverages space is just exploding,” shares Tyson. “Unlike other companies, our gummies are also infused with terpenes which elicit different feelings such as a relaxing effect.” A popular product for sleep and one of Tyson’s go-to’s is the Grand Daddy Purple. “I take it about a half hour before bed and drift off quickly and stay asleep,” says Tyson. Another of Tyson’s favorites is the Bomb Pop gummy, which tastes just like the popsicle and is a great stress reliever. Tyson and the staff at Nothing But Hemp are ready to help you discover all the benefits of CBD. “We’re a family business dedicated to helping people in our community find the right solution with knowledgeable, informed recommendations,” says Tyson. NEW YEAR OLD ME
Generally, I avoid making New Year’s Resolutions. But I am surrounded by many who faithfully make them each year. They pick an inspirational word like CONFIDENCE or FORWARD and then set to creating their list of changes
26
to make in a year. People take on way more than I ever could. They are going to power lift, eat clean, save money, visit long-lost relatives, start a business, quit caffeine and take up mushroom coffee, read the classics, clean the attic, and crochet a kingsized bedspread. It overwhelms me. It would take me over a year just to quit the caffeine, and that would just make me mean.

There is something I do aim to do more of in 2024 though. A resolution with a lowercase r. I’d like to try to do more things solo. I am pretty comfortable being by myself. I always have been. I understand it’s not for everyone, but there is a growing list of things I’d like to do, and I’m the only one who is interested, so the time is now. Last summer, I went on a yoga/ hiking/travel adventure with Gypset Yoga Retreat to Iceland. The company is local but the travelers were from everywhere. And I went by myself. Not alone but solo. There is a difference. Trust me, I was not out there in a dramatic survival experience. I followed lovely prepared meals with guided hikes and dips in various geothermal spas. There were no hardships other than running out of the licorice I brought by day three.
nded
I didn’t know a single other traveler, and it really became part of the magic of the whole experience. It was powerful medicine to explore on my own, literally walk at my own pace, and say yes or no to things without consideration for anyone else. Do I have to get up for early yoga? No. Do I want to every morning? Also, no. Do I want to have both desserts? Obviously yes. And nobody cared or judged or was impacted. It was positively exhilarating. It also was much like childhood. The oohs and aahs over seeing something for the very first time. The wonderment. I saw some things I never thought I’d have the opportunity to witness and in a place I thought I might never go. Most of us spend so much of our time, so much of our precious lives, doing what other people want to do or need us to do. It’s easy to forget
who we are or what we like outside of just getting through the day-to-day. It had been a very long time since I had even introduced myself not connected to someone else. Wife. Mom. Daughter. Sister. Employee. I was a whole person way back when without any qualifiers, and the trip reminded me so deeply - I still am. Good or bad we will all spend a lot of hours alone. But they don’t need to be lonely. So this year I hope to pursue a few more things solo. Small things. Things I don’t need to negotiate with anyone else. The movie that looks good. The lunch spot I’ve never tried. Saying yes, yes, yes. Or no, no, no. And I truly should increase my antioxidant-to-brownie ratio this year. That’s on me alone as well. But if it doesn’t come together…there is always 2025. Cheers to new frontiers!

Although winter may seem like the ideal time to snuggle up and hibernate with your pet, it’s essential to stay active and venture outside when the weather allows. Knowing how to navigate the winter season is key to keeping your pet happy and healthy no matter how cold it may get. We asked the experts at Westonka Animal Hospital and here are their six tips to follow this snowy season to help keep your pet’s spirits and energy levels up. 1. TAKE TIME TO PLAY WITH YOUR PET EVERY DAY. Your pet will likely spend a lot of their time inside during the frigid winter months. However, more time inside may lead to a bored and disruptive pet. To ensure that your furry friend won’t destroy your furniture or ingest something they shouldn’t, provide them with plenty of toys and set aside some time to play with them every day. 2. WATCH THEIR FOOD INTAKE. While many Northern breeds love to play in the snow, others might want to go outside to relieve themselves and go back in. If your pet is less active in the winter than in the summer, limit the amount of treats you give them.

3. PROTECT YOUR PET’S PAWS. Given that we live in the Midwest, you’ll likely encounter icy paths or sidewalks covered in salt. Snow boots or a paw protector gel are great options to keep your pet’s paws warm and protected from sharp ice chunks during walks. Once you return inside, don’t forget to wipe your pet’s paws to remove any salt chemicals.

4. CHECK FOR ANTIFREEZE SPILLS. If you add antifreeze to your vehicle, check and thoroughly clean any spilled liquid immediately after pouring, as it can be fatal to cats and dogs. This would be an emergency situation where time is of the essence. Bringing your pet to an emergency veterinarian would be the right course of action. 5. KEEP YOUR PET’S FOOD IN AN AIRTIGHT CONTAINER. If you notice that your hands are dry and flaky due to the lower humidity, chances are your pet’s skin is experiencing the exact same thing. Keep your pet’s food in an airtight bag to ensure it stays fresh and holds its nutritional value. You can also add an omega-3 fatty acid to help reduce itching and be sure to keep your pet well-hydrated when the humidity is low. 6. LOOK AROUND YOUR CAR BEFORE DRIVING. Although it’s preferred to keep cats inside during the winter, it’s common for them to slip outside from time to time. If you have outdoor or feral cats in your neighborhood, knock on your hood and check around your tires before driving. WINTER WORKOUT ESSENTIALS ARTICLE BY LAUREN BEAUBAIRE
Stay committed to your health goals with these expert tips
Let’s admit it, Minnesota winters are a beast of their own kind. As the temperature plummets, so does our collective enthusiasm for facing the icy outdoors. Waking up and returning home under the cloak of darkness can zap motivation quicker than static electricity on a wooly sweater. Even for those who look forward to winter, taking the extra 20 minutes to layer up and then another 20 to warm up the car can challenge that fresh New Year’s commitment to your health and fitness goals. So we’ve enlisted the help of Merrick Morlan, owner of 3soteric, a MMA (mixed martial arts) gym in Mound, to share his tips on how to keep your winter workouts on track. First and foremost, Merrick advises finding something you’re passionate about. “Our tagline is nourishment, movement, and enlightenment. If you don’t feel like you’re being enlightened or mentally engaged, you’ll have a hard time sticking with it.” Whether you love dance or CrossFit, Merrick suggests joining… something. “Don’t do the free at-home online workout classes. Not because they’re not good but because it doesn’t get you to commit to something. Even the $10 a month online classes are great, and many insurance companies will offer discounts for joining a gym,” says Merrick. “Your winter workout should be an extension of your summer workout. Especially post-holidays, many feel pressure to switch up their workout, but consistency is key. The best winter workout is centered around what you love to do because that will keep you committed.” Lastly, Merrick suggests if you don’t know what to do, sign up for something new! “Don’t think you have to be perfect because when you start anything, you’re not going to automatically be good. Stick with it through the winter and focus on discipline and showing up. Because motivation is a horrible friend. Discipline will outweigh your motivation every day.” Find your passion, commit to consistency, embrace discipline, and you’ll find your winter workouts will actually work! https://3soteric.com

C RO S SI NG THE finish LINE
ARTICLE BY REBECCA A. HAHN
Sir Winston Churchill once said, “There’s something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man.” For most people who do not own a horse, nor are they in the business of horses in general, the typical two minutes spent watching the Kentucky Derby from start to finish just might encompass their annual knowledge of horses for that year. Typically, viewers of this prestigious race also know that the “other two biggies” are the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes. But do they know that horses hold the number two spot for exceptional therapy animals, just behind therapy dogs? Apparently, there’s something about a horse’s gait that can be medicinal in helping one’s brain reset over time. CONTINUED >

Sports enthusiasts who enjoy tuning in to football throughout the fall wouldn’t think of not watching the Superbowl! But how does one explain the popularity of the 15 million viewers in 2023 of the Kentucky Derby, viewed on NBC and Peacock as the most-watched sporting event since the Super Bowl? It can’t be all about the bonnets that women wear to this event. It must have something to do with gambling on who will be the winner. I recently had an opportunity to increase my knowledge of a few “winning horses” when I visited We Can Ride in Medina. This organization is a Premier Accredited Equine Assisted Activities and Therapy Center with PATH (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International). We Can Ride operates with the talents of a volunteer Board of Directors, expert staff, credentialed physical and occupational therapists, PATH-certified instructors, dedicated volunteers, and specially trained horses and ponies. Oh, and before I continue, I don’t want to overlook the importance of Billy, the mule, a fan favorite with a big-time personality at We Can Ride!
According to Erin Larson, spokesperson for We Can Ride, “Seven years ago, this organization relocated from Minnetonka to inside the vacated Mounted Patrol’s Three Rivers Park facility in Medina. With donations from many sources and the help of countless volunteers, the space was transformed to accommodate the needs of this amazing program to provide alternative therapies for children and adults with disabilities. We are both teaching children and adults how to ride horses, as well as providing opportunities for clients to attain better overall wellness with balance, core strengthening, speech, and more,” Erin says. Anastasia Henn was searching for alternative therapies for her four-and-a-halfyear-old son, Jordan, who suffers from epilepsy. “We started at We Can Ride just this past April 2023. At that time, Jordan could not walk on his own, nor could he speak. He has come so far because of this Hippotherapy. He now can walk, and he can speak a little. After his last session, as we were leaving, Jordan repeated several times, ‘Mama, Papa, Hug!’ After only seven months, he is a stronger and more confident little boy!” says Anastasia. “It is important for our therapists to know the medical history of each of our clients. There is a fee per client, relative to the program that is the best fit for them. Those fees cover less than 25% of what it costs We Can Ride to run sessions, but the organization wants to ensure everyone who needs their assistance can access it.” “Typically, three volunteers, one therapist and one instructor work with each client per lesson. One person leads the horse, two people walk on each side, the therapist works on targeted goals, and the instructor ensures everyone’s safety,” says Erin.
Excellence in anything takes money. One can only imagine how much money it costs to own and maintain a Triple Crown Thoroughbred. Well, it also takes money to offer the incredible programs that We Can Ride provides to our communities. If you wish to volunteer your time or donate a few dollars to help feed these horses, you can send a donation to We Can Ride at PO Box 463, Maple Plain, MN 55359 or donate online at wecanride.org. These incredible horses and staff win races every day! Within the lives of each child and their parents are the hopes and prayers to one day cross the finish line. Perhaps Churchill was right; there is something about the outside of a horse that’s good for the inside of a child.

How People’s Organic makes it easy to eat healthy with options for every dietary need
ARTICLE BY LAUREN BEAUBAIRE

EAT R IGH T | FO O D + BEVE RAGE
People’s Organic owner Mike Swafford’s story is a familiar one. “Whenever I ate out at restaurants, I would always feel really tired and have low energy afterward,” shares Mike. “I wanted to eat delicious food, but food that actually gave me energy and stamina after eating it. That’s what really made me interested in People’s Organic. The idea that I could eat something that tastes so good and know that it’s good for you, too.” People’s Organic in Minnetonka makes it easy to start your health journey, offering something for everyone, whether you’re gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan, or have no dietary restrictions at all. “You won’t have to cobble together a meal with sides or just stick with water. Everyone can find something on our menu that they love and leave happy. Our food is organic and made fresh every day in-house. We research where we source all our food, with many coming from local vendors; our eggs are from Larry Schultz Farms, our beef is from K Creek Ranch in Canby, Minnesota, and we have our own coffee line with locally roasted coffee beans.” Their coffee menu rivals any of your favorite coffee haunts, serving up decadent specialty coffee drinks like their Chocolate Java Frappie or the Agave Almond. You’ll also find local beers, including Fulton, Surly, and Insight Brewing, along with a recent addition of infused seltzers. “We are definitely the spot for those who are starting on the path to eating healthier. The Breakfast Bowl or Buddha Salad are healthy choices that you’ll enjoy right out of the gate,” says Mike. “When you start exploring our menu, be patient and let your taste buds adjust. When I started to eat healthier, it took a couple meals to shift my palate.”
LOOKING FOR HEALTHIER COMFORT FOOD?
“Order our Spaghetti Bolognaise or our Mac & Cheese, which you can add bacon to make it really amazing. Plus, our salsa is out of control, and the guac is next level. Both are made in-house every day, and guests purposely order it to-go so they can enjoy it at home.”
WANT A DELICIOUS AND HEARTY BREAKFAST?
“Try our Wild Rice Pancakes with blueberries, the Breakfast Bowl, and we have fantastic pastries from Sift Bakery.”
WHAT’S FOR DINNER?
“You can’t go wrong with our fresh-caught Grilled Salmon Dinner with organic seasonal veggies or our Bison Burger. Go with a classic dish like our Grass-Fed Cheeseburger and Fries, a great choice for the kids. And kids eat free on Sunday nights with an adult dish.”
MOST IMPORTANTLY, WHAT’S FOR DESSERT?
“The Salted Caramel Cheese Cake or our Cinnamon Brioche is a great choice.” People’s Organic also offers catering for all corporate events, school graduations, and boxed lunches for big parties, making it easy to stick to your health goals during the holidays or for any event or celebration. “We cater parties of 800 people to 10 people,” says Mike. “There’s no party too big, nor any party too small.” Not only will you fall in love with their delicious menu, but you’ll fall for People’s Organic’s cozy atmosphere and beautiful patio. During the warm months, both the Minnetonka and Plymouth locations welcome you to a garden oasis where you can enjoy your meal draped in bougainvilleas and surrounded by lush plant life and beautiful blooms. “The greatest feeling is when I see the patio full and everyone’s eating and talking, enjoying their meal. We’re incredibly grateful for all of our guests, supporting local and allowing us to stay in business during some really tough times over the last few years so we can continue to offer a place that caters to all dietary needs,” expresses Mike. “We love seeing so many returning guests. It tells us that we’re doing something right!” www.peoplesorganicmn.com
