Happy Holidays!

December 2023 PUBLISHER

Dave Robertson | dave.robertson@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Lauren Beaubaire | lauren.beaubaire@citylifestyle.com

The holidays are here, and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child, whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities, or a combination of it all that reflects that best. A few of my favorite holiday memories are arriving in Oskaloosa, Iowa, and sleeping over with all of my many cousins in anticipation of gift exchanges. My Grandpa bribed all of his 13 grandchildren with “coffee noochie” (Equal parts coffee, cream, and sugar) while we watched Saturday morning cartoons and the adults slept in. Also, exchanging gifts with one another with the family tradition of sticking each bow on your head as you unwrapped each present. And attending church and singing Silent Night by candlelight and truly taking in the meaning of the holiday. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and share what Lake Minnetonka has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We spare no expense on the gift list this year with Santa-Endorsed Big Toys for Good Girls and Boys. We also share stress-relief strategies for the holidays, showcase a lakeside winter staycation, and spotlight Gear West, a fantastic run, bike, and ski store that will get you ready to embrace a Minnesota winter! And in her latest column, Jen shares a gift-giving horror story that will leave you in tears. (From laughing, hopefully!) We also wanted to share what our area has to offer this holiday season for entertainment and ways to give back. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community who need assistance or are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other, extending grace, empathy, and love. Happy Holidays!

RED COW Wayzata welcomed its newest foodie destination this past October, with Red Cow opening the doors to their sixth location. “Wayzata was always on the map for us,” says owner Luke Shimp. “We’re excited to become part of the community and be where people gather for great food and great drinks whether you come by yourself to hang out, with friends or family, or as a date night.” A 21st-century tap room, Red Cow offers an elevated burger experience in a tavern setting with 32 wines by the glass and 36 craft beers and cocktails. “Everything we serve has a twist and gourmet flair,” describes Luke. “Most of our dishes incorporate flavors I’ve encountered from traveling, like my menu favorite, the Barcelona Burger. When I traveled to Barcelona and had the food, I thought, ‘These flavors would be so good on a burger!’” Other new dishes at the Wayzata location include Poke Bowls and Chowder Fries, a new iteration of Poutine where you’ll enjoy a heaping pour of clam chowder over your fries instead of gravy. “Our vision for the future is for each Red Cow to have its own signature burgers and some unique dishes to its location,” says Luke. Luke, his wife Tracy, and two sons work and run the business. “We’re a family-owned business, and it’s so much fun to work together as a family. When we open a new restaurant, we’re always in it for the long haul, creating a 20-, 30-year vision, becoming part of the community; we want to be your second kitchen,” shares Luke. “I always feel flattered when guests choose us,” says Luke. “Guests have a choice for where they eat, and whether you’re coming out for a quick bite or

making a night of it, we take that seriously and want to deliver, giving guests a wonderful experience.” Try out their new menu and learn more: redcowmn.com

LILIA FLOWER BOUTIQUE Lilia Flower Boutique has arrived in Excelsior. After outgrowing her space in Deephaven, owner Liz Mattingly moved into her new location on Water Street, bringing with her the most divine, locally-grown, and unique specialty flowers you won’t find anywhere else. “My main job is scouring the earth for the most insane flowers,” says Liz. “That’s where the root of my passion lies, to find something so incredible that it’s almost unbelievable that it exists in real life. I remember the feeling when I walked into the first flower shop I worked at, and I had this moment of discovery that I couldn’t believe a place like this existed, and I want to share that same feeling.” In the new location, you’ll find retail space upstairs, showcasing premade floral arrangements in a stunning glass display cooler under the staircase alongside a beautiful array of gift items, including Maison La Bougie candles, gorgeous vases, outlandish card designs from Bench Pressed, and delectable chocolates from Parisian chocolatier La Maison Du Chocolate, undoubtedly a choice influenced by her husband, Julian who is from Brittany, France. Downstairs, however, is where the magic truly happens and where Liz creates exquisite floral arrangements for every occasion. “I feel this incredible honor to be included in the most special moments in people’s lives,” shares Liz. “It’s not just about buying flowers. People come to us for an emotional reason. It’s a huge privilege, and that’s the most rewarding part about being a florist: to be present in weddings and funerals and declarations of undying love, holding space for them during these huge moments.” With Liz’s arrangements, there’s no recipe. “We first ask guests why they’re here, and then we’re able to guide them on which flowers to choose. I tell my staff that for every single arrangement they make, they have to find something that makes them go, ‘Wow, that’s so special.’”

“It’s not just about buying flowers. People come to us for an emotional reason. It’s a huge privilege, and that’s the most rewarding part about being a florist.” Liz is also planning to share her wild love of flowers through monthly and bi-weekly flower classes now that she finally has enough space in the new shop. “I’m most excited to greet people and be able to share the magic of these amazing flowers,” says Liz. Learn more at liliaflower.com and be sure to stop into Lilia Flower Boutique if, for no other reason than to enjoy the heavenly scent of beautiful flowers. D ECEMB ER 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Spotlight: Gear West

A RUN, BIKE, AND SKI STORE UNLIKE ANY YOU’LL FIND ANYWHERE ELSE

26

G E T AC T IV E | SPORTS + RE CRE ATI ON

It was 32 years ago when Jan Guenther quit everything after graduate school and bought a bike store in the Chicago area. “When we started carrying skis at the store, I met my husband, who was a ski rep. We felt the Twin Cities was better for a ski store and moved here together to open Gear West. Our first store was only 500 square feet behind a Domino’s Pizza. We ate a lot of rejects from Domino’s,” laughs Jan. Since that first store, Gear West has now settled down in their current Long Lake location, optimally situated right next to Baker Park, which offers miles of cross-country ski and bike trails.

“Around 10 years ago, we added alpine to our run, cross country ski, bike, and alpine ski products and services,” says Jan. “From clothing apparel, custom boot fittings, and waxing for alpine and cross-country skis to bike repairs and gait analysis for running, there’s really no other store like us. We specialize in servicing what we sell.” What makes Gear West truly stand out is the staff’s exceptional knowledge and experience. “One of our staff members spent eight years on the Olympic Freestyle Ski team,” says Jan. “Another is a pro snowboard racer. Our Nordic ski and service manager was one of the fastest junior skiers in the US. We have coaches here and also just enthusiasts who love these sports.” Jan, herself, is a triathlete. She learned cross-country skiing quickly, trained hard, and went to

the Olympic trials in Anchorage. Not to mention placing 2nd overall at the famous American Birkebeiner. To say Gear West’s staff has unparalleled knowledge and experience is an understatement. Jan understands walking into a store like Gear West, especially if you’re a beginner, can be intimidating. “For me, it’s like walking into an Apple Store, where I don’t know much about technology. But we know how to help people, we’re immersed in what we sell, and we love our customers. We welcome all levels of experience, and we want our customers to feel comfortable. We listen and ask the right questions to determine how to meet your hopes and goals and aspirations. And if something doesn’t work right, we want you to bring the item back in so we can fix it or change it up to what works better.” CONTINUED >

Jan Guenther

So whether you’re coming in to replace old equipment, to get faster at your sport, to get fit, or to participate with the family, Gear West is the place to go. “There are a zillion options for skis and bikes out there, and it’s amazing how quickly we can narrow down the choices to fit the person based on their height, weight, and ability. As long as you want to do it, we can get you going!” Jan’s enthusiasm and love for sports is infectious. And with winter already upon us, now is the time to let Jan and her team at Gear West help you make the most of a Minnesota winter. “I’m a huge advocate for anyone going out to exercise in any way they want to,” says Jan. “We’ll help you get the right clothing to keep warm and direct you on how to dress so you can enjoy cross-country skiing and fat tire biking on the dozens of trails in the area or alpine skiing at Buck Hill. We can also show you how to take your dog out skijoring so you and your dog can head out on the trails together.” They even have shoes with spikes so you won’t slip when going for a run in the winter. Or, perhaps just walking to your car across the parking lot. “It’s been a long 30-plus years of growth and expansion, and has been a heartwarming and challenging experience,” shares Jan. “We appreciate everyone who has supported our small business and would love you to stop in. You’ll be amazed to see the depth of our inventory, our knowledge, and our willingness to show you a lot of really cool gear!” Get out this winter and learn more at: gearwest.com

BETTER TO GIVE THAN TO RECEIVE

The season of holiday gift-giving and receiving is upon us. It’s a magical time to consider what lovely things we can gift and reflect on what lovely things we have received and the care in which

30

they were selected. It also brings up memories of some gift-giving gone wrong. In 1981, I received my worst gift ever. My well-meaning relatives in Montana sent me a 3 pack of undershirts (each with a tiny satin bow) and a pair of dark blue Wrangler Jeans that were so stiff they crunched

Life Min

LOCA L’S CH OICE | L IFE + CULTURE

when I walked. I not only was long past the undershirt stage, but the mere suggestion that I still wore them was a slap across the face. Those were meant for children, and I was so clearly nearly a woman barreling toward age eleven. Also, in 1981, everyone I knew wanted Gloria Vanderbilt jeans because they featured the gold embroidered swan on the pocket. A close second was Sasson jeans with their red logo, OK symbol stamped onto the button, and clever whipstitch detail. Wrangler had no swans and no OK stamps but did feature a large leather patch on the back that made it feel like you were constantly sitting on your own wallet. The week my Montana relatives flew into town, it was expected I wear said jeans and get off the bus to greet them to demonstrate how much I loved their thoughtful gift. I cried. It was too large a burden for a fifth grader to carry, and the consequences seemed so dire. I believed if I wore them to school to obey my parents and I absolutely would be obeying (it was the 80s, after all), I would have no choice

nded

but to change my name, transfer schools, and start a new life the next suburb away. My mom didn’t appreciate that I threw such a fit. Fits of this nature were never well received in our house. First of all, this was family. I was so embarrassingly ungrateful. Second, it was suggested that perhaps my aunt and uncle didn’t know what kids my age liked because their own kids were adults. And somehow, even the state of Montana was held partially liable for my misery. “This is what they wear and have available in Montana.” How Gloria Vanderbilt had not arrived in Montana yet was beyond my comprehension. I was trying to imagine this place, this distant fashion desert, and all I could picture were covered wagons and women scrubbing Wranglers alongside a river. My dad jumped into solution mode and attempted to help me survive my Wrangler trauma yet still appease HIS relatives. He proposed I wear my long red chamois shirt with the jeans. Something along the lines of, “Jenny, this way nobody will even know what brand they are.” And so I set off bravely in my far too warm chamois shirt,

pulled taut over my cardboard jeans, and gingerly walked the halls of fifth grade carrying my dark secret. It’s all I thought about all day. I arrived home that afternoon. I got off that bus with my fashion reputation at school somehow still intact. It turns out nobody was thinking about my pants to the extent that I was thinking about my pants. The relatives came and went. Not one comment was made about how fetching I looked, strutting around robotically in my jeans. And to maintain my deep sense of personal dignity, the undershirts remained in the bottom drawer of my yellow armoire, still attached to the plastic hanger and never to be touched by my hands. I’m sure they were donated at some point to another girl who resented them. I have tried to be a thoughtful giftgiver over the course of my life. And I certainly have become a more gracious gift receiver. Choose gifts wisely, my fellow shoppers. For the best gifts are not the most expensive. Not the most sought-after on any list. They are the ones long remembered. And please leave faultless Montana out of it.

HOLIDAY S E A SON S E RE NIT Y: STRE SS - RE LIE F STR ATEG IE S FOR THE HOLIDAYS

As we near the holidays, common stressors will arise for the whole family. From anxiety about finishing the first semester of school to stress about buying the perfect present, everyone deserves an opportunity to relax. And The Burrow in Victoria, a community gathering space and gaming den for all ages, is the perfect place for the whole family to destress. “We are a very family-friendly environment both for kids to destress playing arcades and parents to destress, whether it’s throwing an axe, playing mini-golf, or having a cocktail with selections from our newly-updated menu,” says Thomas Wartman, owner of The Burrow. Open since the Fall of 2018, The Burrow boasts a 17-hole mini-golf course, 10 axe throwing lanes, a plethora of arcade games, and an enhanced food and drink menu. The mini-golf course is the perfect getaway in the heart of winter. It features a summer park setting with birch and pine trees, flowering plants, and a river rock landscape – something you’ll unlikely find in December in Minnesota. When finding ways to destress, the axe-throwing lanes speak for themselves. Letting out some pent-up frustration by safely throwing an axe is the epitome of an anxiety-reducing activity. And the arcades are great for kids and adults to let off some steam. Games such as Down the Clown, Nitro Truck Drivers, Pac-Man Battle Royale, and virtual reality games allow all ages to experience a little fun during the stressful holiday season.

The Burrow also offers 32 rotating beers on tap, hand-crafted cocktails, fan-favorite burgers, pizza, and Bingo on Wednesday nights and starting in January Saturday Bingo noon to 2pm as well. So before the holiday stress becomes too much, head to The Burrow. The whole family will thank you. theburrowmn.com

When you find yourself stressed out, what helps you relax? For me, it’s getting a massage, but Bella on the Bay proves that massages are just one of the many ways to alleviate stress during the holidays. Located in an old Victorian house in Excelsior, Bella on the Bay is a boutique spa and salon that offers everything from massages and lash services to hair, skin, and nail care. The calm and inviting atmosphere makes for the perfect place to destress. “It is proven that physical touch increases levels of dopamine and serotonin that help to regulate your mood and relieve stress and anxiety,” says Missi Davis, owner of Bella on the Bay. “Physical touch is a very big part of our industry, from the scalp massage at the shampoo bowl to the foot massage during a pedicure; even a simple brow wax can help alleviate stress.” Split between levels of the house, the spa and salon both boast a welcoming environment, but each has its own perks to help you relax. The Bella on the Bay spa features heated beds, calm music, and an overall cozy atmosphere perfect for anyone who needs an opportunity to relax in silence. The salon is more upbeat but offers an equally relaxing environment perfect for someone whose preferred way of destressing is a new look. After all, when you look good, you feel good! It can be easy to forget that we, too, need to take a moment for ourselves during the holidays. “Stress is an energy that can be felt by others. If you are stressed during the holidays, you will not enjoy it as much, and neither will those around you,” Missi says. bellaonthebay.com CONTINUED >

Holiday Entertaining Boards The holidays are here and entertaining is in full swing. If you are looking for the perfect appetizer to easily feed a crowd these simple and beautiful boards are sure to please.

Tips for creating the perfect board: • Start with the larger items first and build around those. If you are using jars on the board, place those first. • Be sure to have enough to fill the space. it is best to overfill so that the board doesn’t look sparse. Stack, stack and stack some more. • Use a variety of colors and textures when choosing the foods you want to use. Pick cheese with color and patterns, fruits and veggies that come in a variety of textures and colors and a protein that can make a statement. • Be sure to place similar colors in away from each other to help give symmetry.

Holiday Wreath Charcuterie Board • • • • •

Fig Jelly Honey Variety of Cheeses Salami or meat of choice Olives (provide a variety)

• Walnuts, Pecans, Pistachios and any favorite nut • Grapes, berries, persimmon • Crackers

Place the jars of sauces and olives on the board first. Next place the cheeses on opposing sides. Add meats and fruits next. Layer in crackers, nuts and seeds and fill in any spots with extra nuts. Use fresh Rosemary or fresh greenery to add wreath accent in the center of the charcuterie board. Garnish with fresh cranberries.

The City Lifestyle

Giving Campaign

2023 48

G IV IN G BAC K | L IFE + CULTURE

“

This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
