Our August issue is dedicated to the cutest members of our community— kids and pets. They both have a way of making us feel special, and their loyalty and sense of wonder is refreshing. In this issue, we are highlighting kids of all ages with a Back-to-School primer as well a look in at a “new” Goddard School in our community. We also share the wonderful story and connection between some local residents and their four-legged companions, and the special bond between father and daughter through adversity. Finally, we get a glimpse at the “last great estate” on the Lake that just went on the market. We also wanted to share a few of our go-to spots to enjoy with kids and fur-kids. It's our fullest issue yet as our business relationships grow and flourish and we add the stories our readers enjoy. Personally, I love this time of year, and this issue in particular because I get to tell you about 3 of my best buddies: Shelby, Winnie, and our new little foster friend from Alabama, Zilla. When one kid moved out, my wife Sara felt the need to add activity back into the house by fostering a dog. We reached out to Secondhand Hounds and within weeks we were united with Zilla, just after her 3 puppies were ready to be on their own. On that Saturday we greeted a very exhausted 2 year old mom ready for some R & R. Of course, Shelby and Winnie had other ideas for their new playmate. We will foster her until she is spayed, recuperated, and ready for her new forever home. As summer begins to wind down and the start of school commences, the carefree days of slower morning routines and spending more time adventuring is exchanged for busier school and sport routines. The summers tend to progressively feel like they fly by the older we get, as do the years, but the simple pleasures of summer never get old. Although the routine of school for our children is often a welcome friend by the time August rolls around, it is generally a little bittersweet. So, as summer comes to a close, we hope you are able to take some time to relax and spend time with the ones you love, be it kids, grandkids, feline, or Fido. No matter what, I hope to see you around the Lake!

rescued from the dog days of summer

FOUR STORIES ABOUT HEROES, VOLUNTEERS, AND MAN'S BEST FRIEND

The dog days of summer are here, and in more ways than one. To get you through these hot summer days are four stories of compassion, unconditional love, and how our furry friends stay with us through it all.

A CALL TO ARMS In March I learned about a remarkable man, Brady Atherton from the Lake Minnetonka area. Brady, a young father to his son Joey and best friend to his two dogs Otis and Archie, made a life-altering decision to put everything on hold and fly nearly 10,000 miles from his home to Ukraine. Brady made this decision after watching footage of a Russian missile hitting an apartment building in Ukraine and hearing the horrifying sounds of a child scream in terror, which still resonates in his mind today. As a new father, Brady felt an urgency to do something, and immediately began to raise money to bring humanitarian food supplies to Ukraine. Brady left his job, his family, got his affairs in order, and left for Ukraine on the 20th of March. Bringing food was only the beginning. Brady experienced the true horrors of war, and after six weeks abroad, one night as Brady was returning to his post, a Russian missile hit the train tracks just 100 yards in front of them. “This shook us to the core,” Brady tells me. The very next morning he made the decision to return home earlier than originally planned. Since he’s been home, Brady reconnected with each of his family members and began to unpack his unimaginable experience. Helping him through are his two lovable dogs who proved to be a source of unconditional comfort. “I can’t help but notice how in touch with my feelings of despair, or moments of PTSD at times, Otis is. He just gets me and seems to sense when I am experiencing these flashbacks,” says Brady. Just as Brady once rescued Otis from a shelter years ago, Otis is now returning the favor, and in a very true sense, rescuing Brady.

BUILDING A FAMILY

“We gathered around the big box with great anticipation. All at once, out jumped an exuberant golden retriever puppy!”

I recently sat down with Bill Naegele, owner of Lord Fletcher’s Old Lake Lodge, a favorite local eatery on Lake Minnetonka. Bill was excited to speak about one of his favorite causes, the Children’s Home Society. This organization specializes in the adoptions of children from other countries, and it was through them that Bill and his wife Stephanie adopted their two children. It wasn’t long thereafter that Bill began to donate his time to the Children’s Home Society, overseeing construction details of their new building and still helping to get the word out 25 years later. But, the Naegele family isn’t complete without mentioning one very fluffy member. Bill smiles, “‘Twas the night before Christmas, our first Christmas together, and my brother Bob and his wife stopped by with a gift. We gathered around the big box with great anticipation. All at once, out jumped an exuberant golden retriever puppy! After a short time, we knew there was only one perfect name for that special dog. And so we named him ‘Twas!” CONTINUED >

GETTING YOUR PAWS DIRTY Armed with gardening tools and donned in bright orange shirts, you’ll find the “Uncommon Gardeners” toiling away in the soil around Excelsior Commons. Once a month on Saturday mornings, this group of volunteers, along with their furry companions, head to the Excelsior Commons to beautify and improve the area for all residents to enjoy. This group of nearly 20 begins with a quick cup of coffee and treats as the daily tasks are gone over. After the last sips of coffee are consumed, it’s all hands (and paws) on deck!

This hard-working group plants and weeds the area with a little digging help from their four-legged volunteers. The next project for the Uncommon Gardeners is raising funds to purchase several hundred bulbs before September 1st. And come fall, additional volunteers will be needed to plant the hundreds of tulip bulbs. To either volunteer your time or donate proceeds, simply drop an email to Jule at julecoughlan@gmail.com.

Paul Douglas with Leo

LENDING A HELPING PAW At his beautiful home in Tonka Bay, I joined meteorologist Paul Douglas and his cavalier King Charles spaniel, Leo, to learn more about two charities close to his heart. Paul tells me, “I have lost too many friends and family members to suicide over the years. The two charities at the top of my list are Suicide Awareness Voices of Education (SAVE) and Union Gospel Mission (UGM) in St. Paul.” Based in Bloomington, SAVE has an international reach with depression and suicide counseling. UGM rehabilitates men and women who need help through education and spiritual counseling. Closer to home, Paul’s pup Leo also lends a helping paw. Paul explains, “He doesn’t judge. Leo accepts me for who I am, warts and all.” He adds, “Funny story, I broke my ankle walking Leo a few years back. But rather than taking off as I lay there in the driveway, Leo didn’t abandon me. I hobbled back to the house on five feet, one was mine and four belonged to Leo. It was at that moment I knew Leo was my guardian.”

“He doesn’t judge. Leo accepts me for who I am, warts and all.”

2020 was “the year of the dog.” America found itself “grrrounded,” which resulted in record dog adoptions everywhere. I, too, looked to adopt two Rat Terriers that I eventually found in Mississippi. These two dogs were wild and had never had a conventional home. Nor did they have a chance to experience a human touch. After a few weeks of calming them down, we brought Arabella and Louis to the Victoria Veterinary Hospital for their first exam, which doesn’t charge for first time exams for all rescue dogs. Each of these stories show the love and joy a dog can bring. The question is “who is needing to be rescued? The dog, or you, or both?” For many, it’s a win-win for you and for Rin Tin-Tin! These dog days of summer might just be the perfect time to invite a new best friend into your life.

racing to recovery Maggie Swanson and Tad Weiss at the Finish Line after their Most Recent Race (June 2022)

A Celebration of Perseverance, Recovery, & Family ARTICLE BY JE N L ARSE N FORTNE R PHOTOG R APHY BY ANNA KOSTOCH KO

Father and Daughter Maggie Swanson and Tad Weiss

Tad Weiss and Maggie Swanson are no ordinary father daughter duo. They work together as financial planners at Modus Advisors, train for triathlons together, and have overcome great adversity together. During the summer of 2014 when Maggie was in college, she went abroad to Spain. Ten days into her program, she was struck by a city bus while out running. The impact caused her to be thrown 25 meters. For reference, 25 meters is the length of a swimming pool. It is a bona fide miracle she survived. Tad and his wife Wendy set up a CaringBridge site for others to follow Maggie’s recovery, and the Weiss family was flooded with support and prayers from friends, but also from strangers. Tad has a book chronicling Maggie’s road to recovery and the village of people who supported her which will be on shelves August of 2022. Surviving such an accident is one thing, but to thrive after one is a different thing entirely. Maggie was cleared to start running just four months after the accident. Running became part of her mental and physical recovery. Tad had done triathlons years prior, culminating in the first Ironman Wisconsin in 2002, but thought Maggie may want to do one as well and encouraged her to bike and swim. Together they raced an Olympic Distance triathlon in Maple Grove. Maggie did so well she qualified for nationals and then qualified for worlds. In 2017 she started to train full time. 2017 proved to be a big year in other ways as well. In October of 2017 Maggie started working at Modus Advisors. She had expressed an interest in the business and Tad thought she may be a good fit, but wanted to make certain she knew what she was getting herself into. She learned the business from the ground up and is now a Certified Financial Planner working with clients, in some respects following in her father’s footsteps. It has to be difficult balancing careers, family, and training, but somehow Tad and Maggie fit it all in. Maggie credits the whole family for their successes. “My husband Paul and my Mom have been so great with all of it. So supportive.” She also adds that her dad has been “great at carving time out of his day to make it more convenient for me.” This includes some early morning swims before the rest of us have woken up. When Maggie completed the Ironman triathlon last year and took 10th, it was more than a great performance. Tad said it felt “like the culmination of her healing.” This achievement was a mark of progress their whole family had been working toward. It sparked an idea in Tad. A big idea. This dynamic father and daughter duo is set to race together in the 20th anniversary Ironman Wisconsin triathlon this September. A competition, but also a celebration. Of perseverance. Of recovery. Of family. Tad’s bigger idea extended beyond what they could do for themselves: could they compete and raise money for multiple charities near and dear to them? Of course they could. They set a lofty goal of raising $500,000 to be donated to four different organizations. And they are well on their way to achieving this goal. CONTINUED >

Tad Cheers Maggie on During the Wisconsin Ironman Race in September of 2021

Clearly Maggie is not only blessed with athletic ability and an incredible work ethic, but also a positive attitude. She marvels at how it has all unfolded. “It’s amazing. God brought so much good out of what seemed to be a bad thing.” Tad agrees. “You’re going to go through something in life, either you have or you will, and there are different ways to react to it when that happens. We give thanks to God and give the glory to Him for saving Maggie’s life and allowing us to do these races together. That’s why we are doing it. Giving back to others in need is our way of saying thanks.” The parenting journey is never over, even when the children are adults. Clearly not every parent and child are able to stay close, and I was curious if Tad had any insight to how they have managed it so gracefully. “I always tried to make sure it was about them, and not me trying to relive my life through them. But it was awesome when my children took an interest in some of the sports that I also loved, and for me, there is nothing better than doing a sport with your kids. Some of my happiest days were the ones when my kids passed me by and became better than me; in skiing, basketball, or triathlon.” Perhaps the lesson we learn from Tad and Maggie is to put one foot in front of the other, no matter our age or circumstance. To follow their journey or support their fundraising efforts, check out their website at 25meters.com.

The Wayzata Home Sits on 12 Acres Overlooking Lake Minnetonka

THE LAST GREAT ESTATE ON LAKE MINNETONKA ARTICLE BY JEN LARSEN FORTNER

Many moons ago, Wayzata was an oasis for city dwellers coming out west to cool off in Lake Minnetonka during the hot summer. Some families rented a place for a week to drink in the lake life, others owned a property on or near the water. Dotted with small cottages and simple cabins, land was quite plentiful, but conveniences were few. Today, Wayzata is a high demand location with easy entrance points to the lake, every desired amenity nearby, and quick access to Minneapolis. Recently, the “last great estate” in Wayzata has come onto the housing market. A birds-eye view of 565 Ferndale Road West boasts twelve lush acres tucked in by wetlands to the north and over 400 feet of private lakeshore on a deep bay leading into the main lake. Mature trees blanket this property, creating a secluded retreat right in the heart of Wayzata. A gem of acreage hiding in plain sight. Up the long, winding driveway there is a large 100-year-old home on the property. The center circle driveway in front of the home is fringed with picturesque birch trees and expertly maintained gardens. Perched atop one of the highest points in the area, the main lake is easily visible from this bluff in the winter. The current owners, who have had the property since the 1960s, have added cascading bluestone patios teeming with peonies, a variety of hostas, and other vibrant perennials. The family raised their daughters in the home, and the property was a private wilderness complete with a beloved treehouse that still remains. Meredith Howell, Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker, and Mike Steadman with Compass Realty confirm this is indeed a rare chance to own a Wayzata CONTINUED >

estate with acreage this extensive. “You can just feel the privacy. When you walk around the property, you feel like you are somewhere else entirely. You can listen closely and you hear silence,” Meredith tells me. And the last of its kind in the city of Wayzata. Meredith explains the property may be purchased as one parcel, but also has the potential for subdivision. The area has strict estate zoning requirements of two-acre minimums per lot. A two-acre property still retains “estate” status and careful planning is required for environmental considerations and maintaining the integrity of the land should it be divided. For now, it is twelve verdant acres where both f lora and fauna have thrived. If these trees could talk, what an incredible story they would tell. While the city has changed and expanded all around them, the trees have remained steadfast. As the saying goes, “They aren’t building any more land.” Twelve acres is still twelve acres, just as it was a hundred years ago. Opportunities here for new treehouses and new outdoor adventures abound. A very special place to put down some roots.

The Goddard School is Putting Down Roots in Minnetonka & Bringing High Standards of Excellence for Early Childhood Education The Goddard School of Minnetonka Boasts a Unique Learning Environment Indoors and Outdoors

Nicole & Brant Dennis, Owners of The Goddard School of Minnetonka

The Goddard School specifically serves children six weeks to six years and utilizes experience and fun to educate young children. There are over 560 Goddard schools nationwide, serving 70,000 students. The Goddard School’s F.L.E.X.Ò learning program (Fun Learning Experience) is what sets this school apart. Nicole Dennis has been entrenched in the education system for over 20 years and loves this approach to learning and the difference that it makes. Local residents and husband and wife duo Brant and Nicole Dennis are the owners of the Minnetonka location and can’t wait to open their doors to the community.

A LONG TIME COMING Bringing the Goddard School to Minnetonka has been a few years in the making. “Originally our friends who own the Medina and Plymouth locations approached us and asked us if we would be interested in opening up another location,” Nicole tells me. “We slowly started to look into it, and it just seemed like the right thing and right timing.” Both Nicole and Brant grew up in the Lake Minnetonka area and are familiar with the community and location. “We graduated from Mound High School, and Brant actually grew up about 15 minutes from the site,” Nicole shares. The couple's combined experience with education and working with families ultimately made this the perfect fit. “This allowed me to enjoy what I love about teaching, and that is working with families and educating the children, but now in a much different capacity.” Being one of the top school districts in Minnesota, The Goddard School will fit right in with Minnetonka’s high standards. “We felt that our offering for pre-school would go well in this district. We saw the need, and we focused in on this area,” adds Brant.

THE GODDARD DIFFERENCE “One of the things Goddard prides themselves on is a dual management system,” says Nicole. This means that Goddard requires an on-site owner and an education director to be present at the school every day in the building. “It's not these executives making decisions every day who aren’t even there, but rather an owner who is invested and knows what is going on and is available.”. Goddard places emphasis on quality assurance. These rules and regulations help to keep the Goddard brand up to par with on-site visits that look at over 200 regulations to verify health, safety, process, and education standards are happening. This way, parents and families can be assured that their young children are in safe and supportive environments. “Childcare has a lot of licensing and regulations to be followed. But this really goes beyond that,” says Brant. “It creates additional work for us, but it allows us to create that top-notch experience for families and where they can feel comfortable.”

LIFE LESSONS What sets The Goddard schools apart from daycare and other childcare providers is the structure. “Daily lesson plans are required, even for the infants,” Nicole explains. “The Goddard framework is about hands-on collaboration, creative thinking, and life and career skills that kids will need to work together. The world is a better place when we can work together and build upon each other’s ideas. It’s about creating confidence and creativity.” “Kids need structure and they need routine,” Brant adds. Especially after the COVID pandemic, it's clear kids and families are craving that sense of normalcy and structure. “A lot of these children who will be coming to our school would have been born during COVID and didn’t necessarily have that socialization. Some of these parents are just excited to get their kids socialized and in a structured environment." CONTINUED >

“The Goddard framework is about hands-on collaboration, creative thinking, and it’s about life and career skills that kids will need to work together. The world is a better place when we can work together and build upon each others ideas. It’s about creating confidence and creativity.”

Nicole and Brant have experience with the Goddard difference in their own child, Anna. “Anna was in a fine, safe daycare. But we noticed that she just needed a little bit more, socially, academically, and emotionally,” says Nicole. “We sent her to the Goddard School in Plymouth, since she needed more of a push before kindergarten, and she ended up doing amazing.”

READY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE The Goddard School in Minnetonka is currently enrolling, and already the infant rooms are full until the spring of 2023. The total amount of children that can be enrolled at a time at the Minnetonka location is 140. “The goal is to provide a safe, healthy, and fun environment,” the couple emphasizes. They will also be hiring dedicated and experienced teachers. “It’s not just about the education. We want the teachers we hire to be in it and love what they do,” Nicole says.

It's apparent that Nicole and Brant have something exceptional in the works. Their genuine passion for education and creating a safe and inspiring environment for children to learn in is exactly what we need in this post-COVID era. But what's more is their desire to create a place that's also fun for the kids. Something special to the Minnetonka location is the playgrounds. Brant works for Landscape Structures Incorporated ((L.S.I.), which is known for providing the best of the best in playground equipment. “No other Goddard in the state has these playgrounds," Brant tells me. Now that is something special. The Goddard School of Minnetonka opened on July 25th and is located on Highway 7 in Minnetonka. School Get Your Family Ready for a New School Year 42

K I D S C OR N E R | ED U CATION

Kids Head Back to the Classroom

The start of a new school year with a new routine is a significant transition from the long, lazy days of summer. Whether your child is starting school for the first time or is a seasoned student, entering a new grade or school requires adjustment. Students and parents alike may feel a range of emotions as the back-to-school season quickly approaches. So ease your family's anxieties by adequately preparing and setting the tone for the new school year.

ESTABLISH RULES AND ROUTINES A new school year means a fresh start and transition from your schedule over the break. Even from one school year to the next, it's smart to reevaluate school year routines and rules. Your kids are a year older and might be in new schools and have new teachers, different schedules, or be ready for new responsibilities. So sit down as a family to discuss things like daily schedules, weekday versus weekend expectations, screen time restrictions, playdate rules, homework routines, getting to and from school, and family time. Be sure to allow your child some input. Setting clear expectations ahead of time can help things go more smoothly.

TAKE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS Your child's safety is a significant concern when heading back to school and away from your watchful eye. Travel safety between home and school, whether your kids walk, bike, take the bus, or carpool, is especially important. So, create a safety plan for your kids before school resumes. A reliable way to communicate with your child is essential to their safety. Phones are available that are appropriate for kids of all different ages. Just be aware of your school's policy regarding devices and make sure your child abides by the rules. For younger children, screenless devices like the Relay, KidsConnect, or Gizmo Watch are excellent options. These devices are designed for children's safety and come with features like GPS trackers and the ability to communicate with limited contacts. Another useful way to protect your kids is to use location tracking apps. If you have older kids with phones, there are many apps for sharing or tracking locations using their phones. Options include GPS tracking or geo-fencing, where you define a certain perimeter for your child and get notified if your child leaves that area.

“Going back to school should be a time of celebration and new beginnings, so treat it like a holiday and start a backto-school family tradition!”

Establish a Safe Way for Your Child to Travel To and From School

Be sure to set expectations that your kids check-in at certain times and before leaving or arriving at a new destination. Also, designate trusted emergency contacts and plans for unexpected events and make sure your child knows who you've chosen.

SCHEDULE ROUTINE CHECK-UPS Get your child up to date on health screenings, especially vision and hearing tests, before the school year starts. If your child has problems with hearing or vision, it can severely impact their education. Discovering and addressing any issues ahead of time will prevent unnecessary struggles and reduce or eliminate their need for support or accommodations. Young kids often don't realize they have a fixable problem or are unable to articulate their difficulties. So seeing a doctor or professional for screenings is essential to getting young children off to a good start.

Set Your Child Up for Success with the Right School Supplies

PREPARE FOR SPECIAL NEEDS OR ACCOMMODATIONS If your child has special needs related to school and learning, take that into consideration. Review any documented plans that are in place like a 504 or IEP. Teachers should have this information if it has already been created for your child. But it's a good idea to refresh yourself on your child's needs and established supports so you can advocate on your child's behalf. Also, plan ahead for special accommodations to help your student at home, too. This may include hiring a tutor or setting a regular homework schedule.

GET SCHOOL SUPPLIES READY Kids must have the supplies they need to support their learning. Find out what's on your child's supply list and see what you can provide your child. Even if your child's school provides the supplies, it's good to have supplies at home for homework or projects. Ask your child's teacher what

Be Sure to Build Excitement with Your Child for the New School Year

would be helpful to have at home. Basic supplies usually include at least a backpack, pens, pencils, paper, and a binder or folders. If you don't have the financial means to cover your child's supplies, help may be available. Check with your child's school or the public library to see if they offer assistance or know of any programs that can help.

DON’T FORGET TO BUILD EXCITEMENT! Even kids who are excited about getting back to school feel some amount of trepidation. Going back to school should be a time of celebration and new beginnings, so treat it like a holiday and start a back-to-school family tradition! Have your child choose a special outfit for the first day of school. Talk with your kids about what everyone is excited about in the new school year. Also, make school year resolutions and help your kids set realistic goals. Involve your kids in the process of preparing for the new school year, and find ways to make it fun, to ensure a smooth transition.
