LIFESTYLE LETTER

December Holidays and Giving The holidays are here, and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child, whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities, or a combination of them all. The traditions in my family rested in the love and time we shared with my grandparents in their home in Oskaloosa, IA. There were gifts, but the magic was being with all my cousins at once with a sleepover that lasted days. If too many were there, we sometimes stayed with my other grandparents that just lived across town. Christmas Eve was with the Larson side, and Christmas Day was with the Robertsons. It was special and magical and something we try to replicate in our own way each year. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what Lake Minnetonka has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. In November, we highlighted stories of giving back in our community, and that theme is still strong in our December issue as well. We take a look at those who are 'Not Home for the Holidays' and serve the community instead. We check in with our interior design expert Erin as she shares tips for holiday decorating. And we introduce a new feature in the magazine to “Spotlight” a business or person in the community. As this year comes to a close, I’d like to express my gratitude to the readers and the local businesses that make the Lake Minnetonka community so vibrant and great. Blessings to each and every one of you. Happy Holidays. And as always, we will see you around the Lake!

“We design for emotion. It’s not just about what you see. It’s the taste, the smell, the sounds, the feel. Decorate for all your senses.”

Nothing signals the beginning of the holiday season like dusting off the old box of ornaments and stringing up twinkly lights. To beautifully decorate your home for the holidays, owner of EH Design and interior designer Erin Haugerud shares her expertise on bringing the magic and warmth of the season into your home.

TAKE INVENTORY Before you hang a stocking or go wild with the tinsel, Erin recommends taking inventory of all your existing ornaments and decorations. Once you know what you already have, you can start formulating a plan for which decorations you’d like to use, devise a color theme, and decide if you need to find new decorations to create a different look for what you envision. When taking stock of your decorations, it helps to also think about the spaces in your home. Especially for those hosting guests, you’ll want to focus on the main areas, guest bathrooms and rooms, and the entryway. Picture where you could place each decoration. Erin advises, “Think beyond the tree. Banisters, chandeliers, hooks by the entryway, and flat surfaces like side tables or a buffet or hutch all offer opportunities to add decorations.” Not only will pre-planning help create a beautifully decorated space, but it makes decorating far less stressful. And none of us need more stress during the holidays!

CREATE A COLOR STORY “Red and green is always a great choice,” says Erin. “But you can incorporate other existing colors in your home, like blues.” This year, Erin sees earth tones overtaking the grays with neutrals like creams, chocolate brown, caramels, and gold. Whichever colors you choose for the holidays, Erin recommends sticking with two accent colors to create a cohesive look.

22

S EASON A L SE T U P S | HOME + DE S I GN

USE TEXTURE Replace your throws with heavy, thick blankets and put soft knit pillow covers on your pillows. Satins, silks, velvets, and knits are all great textures that help transform your home for the holidays, creating that cozy feel. Erin shares one great tip: “Use ribbons to add texture. Choose different hues of one color and layer the ribbons for a warm and inviting effect.” And if you have a more modern style in your home, using texture over color to decorate for the holidays is a great option.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO ADD MORE The holidays are the time to indulge. That includes your décor. Erin says, “Don’t be afraid to add. People think they have to take stuff away to make room for decorations. But you don’t have to rearrange everything.” Erin encourages you to put wreaths in unexpected places, tie ribbons to sconces and light fixtures, and toss bells or garlands in a bowl. By adding instead of completely redecorating and rearranging, you’ll avoid creating a staged holiday look and find it much easier to return your home to normal after the holidays.

INVEST IN GREENS If there’s one decoration to invest in, it’s greens. “You will always use greens,” says Erin. “You can do a lot with them. For example, if you don’t have the best tree, you can add greens to fill it out and make it look higher end.” Add twinkle lights to plain green garlands, or place stems in a bowl with inexpensive ornaments for a simple, elevated look. If you have mature bushes outside, don’t be afraid to clip those and use real greens.

PAIR OLD WITH NEW Even though your childhood ornaments may not have aged well and are scratched or falling apart, you should still pull them out of the box. “They tell a story, and passing on those family traditions is an important part of the holidays,” says Erin. “My parents gave me a new ornament each year, and now, I’ve picked up that tradition with my kids. I’ll decorate the tree how I love, and the kids will then add their ornaments on top — the old with the new.” Pairing older pieces with fresh décor brings new life to them and allows you to incorporate those sentimental pieces.

ENGAGE ALL THE SENSES Don’t just stop at eye candy. “We design for emotion,” explains Erin. “It’s not just about what you see. It’s the taste, the smell, the sounds, the feel. Decorate for all your senses." A familiar smell or favorite song can easily transport you back to childhood holiday celebrations. Evoke those fond memories, and pull out the thick, cozy afghans and add scents like sage or cinnamon with candles or reed diffusers.

STRESSLESS STORAGE Creating a storage system will make your life a whole lot easier. “Set yourself up for next year by taking a quick inventory, separating everything into categories, and placing your decorations in separate bins,” says Erin. Erin puts stems in one bin, greens and garlands in another, separates pillow covers and holiday blankets and labels everything. Erin also opts for ornament storage bins with individual compartments to safely store and organize ornaments. With a system in place, you’ll be ready for stress-free decorating next holiday season.

Spotlight: Lakeshore Interiors

How Lakeshore Interiors helps create a home you love. ARTICLE BY LAUREN BEAUBAIRE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMILY JOHN

26

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | PR OF E S S I ONAL S E RVI CE S

When Denise Loehr purchased Lakeshore Interiors almost seven years ago, it was a natural fit. “Interior design has always been a part of my life,” explains Denise. “It’s what I studied in school, and my dad was a builder all his life. I would be hands-on helping him with projects, and when I got older, I started to tile, paint, and stain.” Denise uses her expertise and love for design at Lakeshore Interiors, helping clients transform their house into a home. Located in Wayzata, Lakeshore Interiors offers flooring options, from carpet and wood to vinyl, window treatments, wallpaper, fabric, countertops, and interior design services. Everything you need for big or small home projects. “Denise is really good at what she does,” says store manager Jillene Marcotte. When Jillene joined the team a year ago, it was also a natural fit. Denise and Jillene graduated together from Westonka High School and now have great fun working side by side. “We’re always laughing,” says Jillene. “We love what we do, and that spills over to the customers.” Denise and Jillene build relationships with each customer, taking the time to understand their needs, lifestyle, personal style, and budget. Even long after projects are finished, past clients still come in merely to chat and say “hi” to Denise and Jillene. “We give our customers time to figure out their vision. It’s a big purchase, and you’ll have the flooring or window treatments for a long time. We want to make sure you get what you love,” says Denise. One of their services includes coming to your home at no charge to test samples, answer questions, and help you feel great about your design and product decisions.

Lakeshore Interiors works with trusted builders and partners, matching clients with the right products and services for their particular project. “We’ve worked with our partners for a long time. They’re hardworking perfectionists and the backbone of what we do,” says Denise. Customers can have confidence that they’ll get exactly what they envisioned because if something goes wrong, Lakeshore’s partners will return to address any problem. A service that sets Lakeshore Interiors apart. Denise affirms, “If something comes up ten years down the road, we remember who you are, and our installers will come back and fix the issue.” For both Denise and Jillene, this work is incredibly rewarding. “I love working with people, getting to know them, and helping them figure out how to turn their house into a home they love,” says Jillene. Denise adds, “Every project is different. The most fun is finding the right product, color, and design for the right spot. It’s super exciting to find that, along with hitting a great price point in or under budget for our customers.” It’s clear Denise and Jillene love what they do. Looking towards the future, Denise plans to stay small, enabling Lakeshore Interiors to continue providing that personal touch and the ability to give each customer and project dedicated time and attention. Where Denise and Jillene would love to grow is with their partner network, connecting with more builders and designers to add even more talent to their skilled team. For your next project, whether big or small, Denise and Jillene are ready to take the journey with you and help create a home you love. Not Home For The Holidays ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY REBECCA HAHN

Two officers share what it's like working the holiday shift at the Deephaven Police Department

30

H OM E TOWN H E R O | LOCAL S E RVI CE S

No matter what country a person lives in, when the holiday season rolls around, most of us look forward to spending quality time with our families. For some, it’s the smell of a home-cooked meal as you come in from the cold. Yet, for the little ones, it typically is all about what might be under the tree. One thing is for certain, some of the greatest gifts we get at Christmas can’t be found under the tree because they’re just too big! I remember being asked as a young girl, “what did you get for Christmas?” I don’t remember anyone asking me, “what did you give for Christmas?” It also surprises me that whenever I try to remember my favorite Christmas, I usually can’t. Somewhere throughout the years, Christmas changed. It no longer centered around the gift that came in a box. As the kids grew up and eventually married, a great holiday season would often depend on whether the kids were going to be home with us, or with their in-laws. Sometimes, it was even tough keeping everyone’s schedule straight! We as parents learn to adjust; after all, no one can be in two places at once; and Christmas is, after all, mostly for the children, or is it? It got me thinking about people who couldn’t spend the holidays with either family due to “what they did for a living.” Hospitals stay open, so there must be hundreds of nurses and doctors who can’t be home for the holidays. And what about the men and women in our armed forces who can’t make it home? Let’s not forget about the 911 dispatchers and firemen that draw the short straw and end up “Not home for the Holidays!”

We take it for granted that on the 25th all businesses are closed except for “that shift.” But wait, it’s not true, for what would we do, if something went wrong, and the police were all gone? This year Officer Kaylin Nelson from the Deephaven Police Department has drawn the short straw for Christmas and New Year's Day. Her husband, Tyler Nelson, a policeman in the Winsted area, will be working this Thanksgiving. Last Christmas, Officer Ethan Read (Deephaven Police) spent Christmas Day away from his two kids, Braden 10, and Irelyn 5, and from his understanding wife, Nicole. “They know that this is where I must be,” said Officer Read. Officer Nelson will miss her son Liam’s first Christmas this year. “It’s alright. It’s part of the job. I do get a good feeling when I am out on patrol on Christmas, and I see driveways with several cars. I know that their family is home for the holidays. I just smile and say to myself, 'I’ve got your back.'” Each of these officers feels the Christmas spirit firsthand every year when participating in the annual KARE 11 Toys for Tots celebration. The Deephaven Police Department will load and deliver two semi-trailers full of toys for this event. The tent at KARE 11 will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. through December 14. While the deadline for dropping off donations at the Deephaven Police Department has passed, you can still donate a toy at one of the many drop-off locations around town. You can find the closest drop-off location online at minneapolis-mn.toysfortots.org. You can also drop off a new unwrapped toy at Kowalski's Markets. CONTINUED >

“It’s part of the job. I do get a good feeling when I am out on patrol on Christmas, and I see driveways with several cars. I know that their family is home for the holidays.”

For the many kids wondering if Santa will remember them this year, I urge you to place your imaginary Santa or Elf cap on and drop off a gift or two at a location near you. For children, “something to open” is exciting. For us older kids, being aware of the thousands of men and women who are “giving of their time via their jobs,” is a huge gift that cannot be found under our trees.

Lastly, but most importantly, let me share a little ditty that my grandmother taught me. “Let us never forget, yet always remember WHY the baby Jesus was born on the 25th of December!” If you are someone who can’t be home for the holidays because of your job, let me just say, thank you for your service from myself and my colleagues at the Lake Minnetonka Lifestyle magazine.

ARTICLE BY JEN LARSEN FORTNER PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES PHOTOGRAPHY @UNCOMMON.JANE

tis the season of giving Learning to let go and give back this holiday season

Twelve years ago, I bought Marie Kondo’s book, “The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up.” I was inspired to pare down and rid my home of all superfluous things. The magic did not happen. Several things worked against me, including sentimentality, hanging on to things ‘just in case,' and three young children who loved their things and made wish lists for future things. I couldn’t even part with the book, so now I have that on the shelf as well. Over time things just accumulate. The throw pillows, train sets, Littlest Pet Shop figures, baskets (who bought all these baskets?) Polly Pockets, books, bins filled with cords, glassware, so many stuffed animals, holiday decorations, Legos, VHS tapes, etc. Note: We no longer own a VHS player, yet we do still have some VHS tapes. I have no explanation for this. I wish the sensible method of “one thing in and one thing out” applied here, but we likely need to go bigger. Maybe a one-to-ten ratio to start. My children have long outgrown many of their clothes, toys, sports equipment, and furniture, and it’s been easier for them to part with all of it than it has been for me. And while I am horribly nostalgic, I have become more nostalgic for a less cluttered life. So instead of setting a good example for my kids, I will take my cue from them. Time is marching on, and letting it go is the right thing to do. December is the season of giving and receiving, and I hope our family can focus primarily on the giving part this year. Donating things that others can use, donating things we no longer use/need, donating money to the causes we care about most. I enjoy giving to organizations that support

the needs of children most since my own kids have been so incredibly fortunate, and it really is the luck of the draw. CPA Steve Heintz from Heintz + Clark, Ltd, offers some things to consider during this season for donating goods or money and recommends speaking with your tax professional for your specific circumstances. Generally, regarding donations of clothing or household goods, he says, “Everyone has seen the slips you receive when you drop something off at Goodwill. Those slips alone are not substantial documentation of what was given. We recommend people take a picture of the items prior to donating them.” He also recommends writing a check versus cash for monetary donations to have a paper trail for documentation. There are many opportunities presented to all of us to donate to an alma mater, a charity, athletic event or even a local family who is facing a health challenge. While all donations are appreciated, not all of them have tax implications. Steve gives me this helpful advice, “People often think all donations made via Go Fund Me are deductible. Only donations made to Charity Fundraisers are. Donations to personal fundraisers are not deductible. This said, don’t let the tax tail wag the dog! If you donate to a cause you feel worthy, you should still feel good about it, even if you aren’t receiving any tax benefit.” Let us give joyfully and generously this season. But I’m still hanging on to the trains. Just in case I need them in 15 years for grandchildren I’m envisioning. I sure hope they like trains because the ones I’m storing appear to be multiplying.

The City Lifestyle

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
