As we step into our Women’s Issue this May, I find myself reflecting not just on the women who raised me, but the women who continue to walk alongside me every day. Sisterhood, to me, is not something abstract. It is the women who show up, who cheer you on, who step in without being asked, and who remind you that you are never doing life alone.

I have been blessed to be surrounded by a strong circle of women, especially in this season of motherhood. Through sports, school, and everyday life, I am constantly reminded that it truly takes a village. It looks like helping each other get kids where they need to be, bringing dinner when someone’s day gets overwhelming, or picking up the phone late at night just to listen. It looks like laughter in between the chaos, margarita nights after long days, and moments where we can simply be ourselves. Those small, consistent acts of support are what make this season not only manageable, but joyful.
What I have learned is that sisterhood is not about perfection. It is about presence. It is about choosing to uplift one another no matter the season, no matter the circumstance. Whether it is reminding a friend she is doing a good job, offering help without hesitation, or simply showing up with kindness, those moments matter more than we often realize. They create strength. They create confidence. On the cover, 4Ever Young reminds us that feeling youthful can be reclaimed at any age. In this issue, Family Promise highlights the power of community through two women’s stories of resilience, Dr. Dawn Harrell in her second act of life at Bear Paw Medical brings care to locals, while Shannon Livingstone shares insights from a realtor on dealing with life's changes with grace, Patricia Garcia Carrillo at Garcia Family Law reinforces that, no matter what, it's great having someone in our corner.
Lake Houston is filled with that kind of sisterhood, where someone always shows up to be in your corner. We continue to invest in one another, we create a community where women do not just get through life, they thrive in it. Because when you surround yourself with women who support you, challenge you, and celebrate you, you are reminded daily of who you are and who you are becoming.
This is for the women who make this community so strong,

4EVER YOUNG KINGWOOD BUILT IN PARTNERSHIP, GROUNDED IN VITALITY AND THE BELIEF THAT FEELING YOUNG NEVER HAS AN EXPIRATION DATE
ARTICLE BY RORI ORTIZ | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTA MCCOURT & KELLY ANNE STYLE
For Cynthia Wilcox and her husband, Dr. Darrell Wilcox, youth is not a number. It is a mentality. It is the decision to keep showing up for your life with energy, even as your body changes. At 4Ever Young Kingwood, that philosophy sits at the center of everything.
For Cynthia, like many women, she found herself in a season that made her feel not her normal vibrant self. That shift did not happen overnight; she was experiencing insulin resistance, heightened anxiety, and a noticeable shift in her energy, all while trying to reconcile a body that no longer responded or looked the way it once had. She was told this was normal, just part of the aging process. Cynthia and her husband both facing similar issues, were both trying to figure out what was happening to their bodies while also navigating raising a family and all the responsibilities that requires, thinking accepting exhaustion just couldn’t be the answer for either of them.
Cynthia was in the middle of so much change. She did not feel old, but she no longer felt like
herself either, and when it came to showing up for their twin daughters, Abigial and Savannah, she was not prepared to surrender. That’s when the search for answers began, and it became a new beginning for their family. Cynthia and her husband began looking beyond surface-level explanations. Darrell is a physician, and together they recognized not only their own need for support but also how many men and women were carrying symptoms in exhausted silence.
That is where 4Ever Young Kingwood took shape. Cynthia describes, “We are aging as we sit here, but there are changes we can make today and tomorrow to soften the blow of aging and strengthen our body by supporting long-term vitality.” For her, the mission became clearer as she thought about the kind of parent and woman she wanted to be. Her twin daughters are central to that story. As they stepped into adulthood and began their own health journeys, Cynthia wanted to show up for her girls. In many homes, women are taught to just keep going and accept discomfort. Cynthia wanted to show her

daughters a different path. She wanted them to see that youthfulness can be found at any age. Simply investing in your well-being can give you years, rather than toughing things out. In a way, 4Ever Young Kingwood is as much about modeling as it is about medicine. Cynthia is showing her girls that youth lives in how you approach your life. It lives by being proactive rather than being defeated. It lives in learning your body instead of resenting it. It lives in the belief that confidence, wellness, and joy are all tied together and still available to you, whether you are 18, 28, 48, 68, or beyond.
Cynthia has a new lens on life and the man she married. She knew him as her partner and the father of their children. But after 24 years of marriage and working together, she was able to see Darrell in a new light, with his passion for people and the medicine their clinic provides to those who feel they are running on empty when they walk through the door. Dr. Wilcox brings the physician’s perspective, medical expertise, and commitment to helping patients find real answers. Cynthia provides the heart behind what they do, and her instinct for people, making them feel at ease and not rushed, judged,
or pressured. Together, they work cohesively at 4Ever Young Kingwood, serving patients by creating relationships based on trust. Cynthia wants people to feel safe talking about anything, from insecurities to fatigue or fear. It’s the same attitude she has carried as a mother...talk to me, and let me know how you are struggling so we can fix it together. Because there is only one way to figure out if you’re alone in what you’re going through, and that is through conversation. 4Ever Young Kingwood may not have all the answers, but it was built on compassion and a willingness to help people take their next right step.
For women and men reading this in the thick of their own changes, youth at any age is not about pretending time is not passing. It is about refusing to disappear inside the aging process. It is about choosing partnership over isolation, knowledge over resignation, and vitality over autopilot. Cynthia and Dr. Wilcox aren’t focused on providing a fantasy or the fountain of youth, but they know a more honest and fulfilling path forward. People can feel young at any age, and the journey begins when you decide your life, your health, and your sense of self are still worth fighting for.

“Cynthia is showing her girls that youth lives in how you approach your life. It lives by being proactive rather than being defeated.”

How Family Promise helped two mothers rebuild and give back
ARTICLE BY RORI ORTIZ | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEN PISANI & JORDAN LEWIS
Family Promise of Lake Houston shares hope with families experiencing homelessness. The nonprofit’s mission is to create a foundation where families can begin again.
For Cara Bayete and Caren Marroquin, that transformation took place when both women entered the program, navigating life after ending harmful relationships. As mothers making the difficult decision to leave to provide a safer situation for their children, they did not take it lightly. Both families had to move elsewhere to distance themselves from their old lives and find safety and stability. Both
women made the brave choice to move to Texas. Now, both of their paths, similar yet unique, led them to Family Promise.
Cara arrived seeking the safety that Texas Laws provide to women with children, and she yearned for the space to rebuild. By stepping into an unfamiliar place for her next chapter, she did so with courage and determination. After leaving behind her previous life and starting over with her daughter in a new state, she entered the program needing not only stability but also time and support to truly rebuild the sense that this wasn’t temporary.

Through Family Promise, Cara found a structured environment rooted in dignity, accountability, and community. She was met with compassion at every turn and was given the tools to move forward. She and her daughter were surrounded by people who believed in their ability to succeed. Over time, she rebuilt their life, eventually working towards graduation from the program and becoming a homeowner.
Caren’s journey shares that same resilience and determination as Cara’s. Caren is a mother of four, and when she entered the program, she had never lived independently. Having spent the majority of her years as a stay-at-home mother, she was suddenly faced with the daunting task of rebuilding her life from the ground up on her own. It felt to her like a crash course in many of life’s milestones she should already have been equipped to handle. From understanding how to apply for housing to managing finances to securing employment, she was new to so much. Family Promise gave her the space to learn while still caring for her children. They were with her every step of the way, helping her to lean into the required growth, offering her courage, and helping her stay persistent.
At each milestone, the program supported both women’s success and their ability to replicate it. Family Promise did not simply provide temporary relief; instead, it gave them no time limits on their journey toward long-term stability and success.
Today, she serves as an influential member of the chamber of commerce communities in the Greater Houston Area. She served our area as Director of Membership Development at Partnership Lake Houston and has moved on to serve in her new role as Director of Membership Growth & Development with The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce, all while also giving back as as an Executive Board Member for Family Promise. In all roles, she uses her voice and experience to advocate for individuals in need and strengthen others in the very community that once helped her to rebuild.
Caren learned not only how to provide for her family, but also how to build a future. She set goals, followed through on them, and discovered a level of strength she did not know she possessed. Today, she serves her community as an officer of the Houston Police Department (HPD). A role she never imagined for
herself but now serves as a symbol of her resilience. Her role in HPD shows future possibilities for her children, who look up to their mother for how she serves our community, and her focus on being the first line of aid for other women who may find themselves on a path similar to her past life.
Cara and Caren represent the power of women who choose to rise even when the path forward is uncertain. Their journeys reflect the importance of programs like Family Promise and the impact they have on the communities they are a part of. It is undeniable the strength these two women possess, and their stories are defined not by the hardships but by the courage it took to set their children up to flourish. Now they lead and serve their communities with grace.
That collective support exists if you or someone you know finds themselves in a similar situation, there is a place to turn. For immediate support, individuals can contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233.
Family Promise is entirely donation-funded and functions through the generosity of community members who believe in its mission. If you would like to help families in need rebuild, reach out to Family Promise of Lake Houston at 281-441-3754.

DOCTOR DAWN HARRELL BUILDS A COMMUNITY-FIRST PRACTICE ROOTED IN EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, AND THE BELIEF THAT CARE SHOULD MEET PEOPLE WHERE THEY ARE
Dr. Dawn Harrell did not follow a straight path into medicine. Her journey began on the sidelines of high school athletics, working as an athletic trainer and building a career grounded in movement, injury assessment, and recovery. She earned advanced degrees, moved through different professional settings, and continued to feel a persistent sense that something was missing.

That realization became clearer during a season of life that demanded she change. While raising a family, Dr. Harrell began to reassess what she wanted; was she building the life she wanted? In 2019, she decided to return to school to pursue a doctorate in chiropractic care. It was not just a career pivot, but a second act.
After completing her degree and stepping into an associate role at a local clinic, she received an opportunity. Within months of passing her board exams, she moved from employee to owner. Today, as the owner of Bear Paw Medical in Lake Houston, Dr. Harrell has created a practice that reflects her background of more than two decades of working with the human body.
Bear Paw Medical is committed to individualized care. Dr. Harrell is intentional about avoiding a one-size-fitsall model. Each patient is evaluated thoroughly, with attention to their personal history, daily movement, and any current conditions. From there, care is built around the individual rather than a standard protocol. Patients are not simply treated and sent on their way. They are educated, guided, and included in the process.
Instead of relying heavily on clinical terminology, which can feel impersonal, Dr. Harrell focuses on clear explanations that connect with her patients’ day-today lives. In the Lake Houston area, patients often have access to either chiropractic care or more traditional medical services, but rarely both in a coordinated, accessible setting. Bear Paw Medical is designed to bridge that divide by combining rehabilitation, chiropractic care, and medical services in one location.
That means fewer appointments for many patients, and they no longer need them throughout their care. They can stay within their local community and receive care that is locally connected. That vision is why Dr. Harrell chose to build her practice in Lake Houston, where her life was already rooted. Her children attend school in the area, and she is actively involved in local organizations such as Kingwood Business Women. She does not see herself as separate from her patients, but as part of the same daily scenes of the community.
Understanding the demands of your neighbors’ everyday lives and helping those who become patients feel better as they manage their lives is central to her approach. It is also what led her to expand beyond traditional chiropractic care. By bringing in a nurse practitioner and continuing to expand the clinic’s medical side, Dr. Harrell is working toward a model that allows patients to receive more comprehensive care without leaving the community.
“Dr. Harrell is working toward a model that allows patients to receive more comprehensive care without leaving the community.”
Building something like this has not come without challenges. She remains deeply grateful for her team, including nurse practitioner Lindsay Mabe, who plays a critical role in supporting the clinic’s expanded care model. Transitioning into ownership required her to quickly learn. She sought out mentorship, invested in herself, and leaned into the areas where she needed support. That willingness to continue learning reflects the same mindset that led her to her second act in the first place.
For Dr. Harrell, as the curtain rises again on her next stage of life, it is not about perfection or having every step mapped out. It is about choosing to move forward, even without complete certainty on where you’re standing in the next scene. As Bear Paw Medical continues to grow, she knows her team is building something that better reflects our community’s needs, and her focus remains on that. Patients deserve to feel understood, to have nearby treatment locations, and to receive care tailored to their unique needs.

Competence, confidence and a winding path building a book of business amidst personal reinvention
ARTICLE BY RORI ORTIZ
PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTA MCCOURT
For Shannon Livingstone, real estate wasn’t a part of her mapped plan. Her journey began through house flipping in the late 1990s alongside her then-husband. What started as a practical step to support a growing business became life-altering, shifting the course of her future.

Early in her career, Shannon found herself entering the real estate industry with excitement. She had a lot of learning to do on her own, and the early years were not without their challenges. Then, this career change and a move to Boise, Idaho, placed her squarely in the middle of the 2008 housing crisis, one of the most difficult times to build a budding real estate career. Looking back, she describes that season not as a failure, but as a foundation-setting time. It was during that time that she learned what not to do, as distractions were stripped away, which helped her focus on discipline and resilience early on.
When Shannon returned to the Houston area, she had made a pivotal connection that changed everything. Under the mentorship of a seasoned agent, she learned to approach real estate not as a side hustle but as a true business. Contracts were studied, systems were built, and confidence began to take shape alongside competence. It was in that season that the pieces finally started to connect.
Over time, that foundation grew into a reputation built not on transactions, but on relationships. Today, the majority of her business comes from referrals, reflecting the trust she has cultivated with clients over the years. Shannon approaches each transaction with intention, focusing on education, communication, and preparation so her clients feel informed and empowered every step of the way.
Her background continues to influence how she serves. From understanding how to present a home to studying negotiation and buyer psychology, she has developed a proactive approach that allows her to anticipate challenges before they arise. What appears seamless on the surface is, in reality, the result of years of discipline.

But beyond the contracts and closings, Shannon’s work is deeply tied to the place she calls home. After a childhood shaped by constant movement in a military family, Lake Houston became something different. It became the place where her children were raised, where friendships were formed, and where her life found stability.
That connection fuels the way she shows up, not only for her clients, but for the community itself. She intentionally supports local businesses, works with area vendors, and contributes to organizations that serve families in need. For her, real estate isn’t a oneway; it requires us to invest back into the place that we decide to call home.
Now, as she steps into a new chapter with Martha Turner Sotheby’s International Realty, Shannon is focused on refinement. Her goal is not simply to do more, but to do better. By moving into the luxury market and working at a higher level, she is creating space to offer an even more elevated, personalized experience while also protecting the quality of life she has worked hard to build.
Her journey is one of reinvention. From a young mother starting out with limited resources to a respected professional with a book of business shaped by her own path, Shannon Livingstone’s story is proof that success is not always linear. She gets to show clients how a home is much more than just the keys provided at closing.

The Highlands is a community designed for connection, nature, and everyday enjoyment. From the lazy river pool and scenic lake trails to the golf course, clubhouse, and vibrant social calendar, there’s truly something for everyone.

For Patricia Garcia Carrillo, owner and attorney at Garcia Family Law, clients are not rushed. They are not corrected, not judged. They are just heard, because that is where everything begins.
Patricia served as a paralegal working under her mentor, Corwin Reed. She witnessed what it meant to truly sit with someone in their most fragile moments. He led with presence. He listened more than he spoke, and he offered a steady sense of calm with his legal guidance. That lesson stayed with Patricia. Today, inside her own practice, she carries that same approach forward. Because in family law, the cases are never just cases. They are people navigating difficult life-altering decisions. They are parents trying to protect their children. Individuals are trying to find their footing after everything they once knew has shifted.
More often than not, they arrive overwhelmed. Most clients arrive at the precipice of something traumatic. The act of
listening and allowing someone to be heard builds trust. It allows people to exhale. Patricia understands that before anything else can happen, she has to create space to listen not just to the facts that will matter in court, but to understand the full weight of what someone is carrying. Clients who may have walked in guarded or unwilling to share often will feel safe enough to be honest with her by the end of their first conversation. And in Patricia’s world, honesty is essential to providing good representation. That trust becomes the foundation of her work. In many ways, Patricia steps into the role of emotions translator, shaping her client’s experiences into clear and compelling narratives. To do that effectively, there has to be alignment. She takes the time to understand not just what happened, but how and why, ensuring that when it is time to speak on their behalf, she is telling their story with accuracy, intention, and unity in mind.

That approach does more than prepare a case. It steadies the person behind it. Clients begin to shift from reacting emotionally to thinking more clearly, knowing someone is guiding them through the process. Patricia is direct when needed, but her delivery is grounded in care. She does not tell people only what they want to hear. She helps them understand what is real and what matters, and ultimately move them toward the next steps. In situations where emotions run high, that clarity becomes critical. It allows her clients to stay focused, especially when the stakes involve children, family dynamics, and long-term outcomes. Because family law is not just about outcomes, it is about people in transition. It is also about helping clients recognize what truly matters in the long run when everything feels urgent. In custody cases, especially, Patricia often guides clients back to the same grounding principle: the well-being of their children must come before ego, conflict, or the desire to “win.” That perspective can shift the entire trajectory of a case and, more importantly, the future of a family.
Patricia understands that deeply, not just as an attorney, but as someone who once needed someone to believe in her. “Growing up with limited resources, I once felt the idea of becoming a lawyer was completely out of reach.” Patricia reminisces. It was her mentor’s belief in her and investment in her that shifted the narrative, giving her the confidence to step into a future she had not yet imagined for herself. That investment in her potential shaped not only her career, but the way she now shows up for others. She understands firsthand how powerful it is when someone stands in your corner and sees what you may not yet see in yourself. Outside of the office, success and support have been found in her personal life. Patricia credits her husband, Carlos Carrillo, as a steady source of accountability, often reminding her to step away from the emotional weight of her cases and recharge. Together, they also run Charlie’s Watch Bar, a space that offers a different pace and perspective from the courtroom. Whether it is time spent there or simply being present at home, those moments allow her to reset, ensuring she can continue to show up fully for the clients who rely on her.

Patricia understands that before anything can happen, slowing down and truly understanding where her clients are coming from can build a better foundation for the cases she handles and create the trust needed to move forward together. Her foundation traces back to the person who first showed up for her. Patricia often reflects on the influence of her mentor, Mr. Reed, not just for teaching her but also for offering guidance and encouragement, and for being the example of what it meant to serve others with both skill and compassion. It is a legacy she carries with intention daily and into each case; even the way she speaks to clients in difficult moments echoes the standard he set: “I’m in your corner.”

The power of taste, trust, and the courage to “just start.”
She didn’t have a business plan, a media budget, or even a name anyone could pronounce. What Becky Hillyard had was taste, a young family, and the instinct to just start. Today, her lifestyle brand Cella Jane commands an audience the size of Vogue’s, she’s nine collections strong with Splendid, and she’s built it all while raising three kids — refusing to sacrifice one for the other. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Becky shares what it really takes to build a brand, a career, and a life you love. Read the highlights below, then scan the QR code for the full conversation.

Q: WHEN DID YOU KNOW CELLA JANE WAS MORE THAN A HOBBY?
A: Two moments. Women started emailing me saying they bought something I recommended and felt amazing — asking me to help them find a dress for a wedding. That felt incredible. Then I looked at my affiliate numbers for one month and realized I could cover our mortgage. I thought, I can actually do this. I never set out to build a business. I started it because I genuinely loved it.

Q: WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST RISK YOU EVER TOOK WITH THE BRAND?
A: Designing my own collection. It’s easy to point at items on a website and say I love these. But to create something from scratch, put your name on it, and wait to see if people connect with it — that’s terrifying. I had an incredible partner in Splendid, and women loved the pieces. It was the biggest risk and the biggest accomplishment.
Q: HOW HAS INFLUENCER MARKETING CHANGED SINCE YOU STARTED?
A: When I started, brands didn’t know whether to take it seriously. Now it’s a legitimate line item in their marketing budgets — sometimes bigger than TV. Because what we’ve built is trust. People trust a real recommendation from someone they follow far more than a commercial. There’s no question about it now.
Q: YOU’RE A MOM OF THREE RUNNING A FULL BRAND. WHAT DOES YOUR DAY ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE?
A: I try to get up at five and not hit snooze — that first hour before the house wakes up is the most productive, most peaceful hour of my day. Then it’s all hands on deck with the kids and school drop-off. After that I work — planning content, connecting with my team, editing. After pickup, the day shifts completely and it’s all about them. I’ve learned to protect both halves fiercely, because both matter.

Q: WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO BUILD SOMETHING OF THEIR OWN BUT KEEPS WAITING?
A: Don’t wait. Don’t wait for the perfect camera, the right strategy, or enough followers. We find every excuse to stay comfortable. Just start, be consistent, and be authentically yourself. The right people will find you — and they’ll stay.
This conversation is just the beginning. Becky goes deeper on the risks that almost stopped her, the design process behind her latest Splendid collection, and what she’d tell her 2012 self today. Scan the QR code for the full, exclusive City Lifestyle interview on the Share the Lifestyle Podcast.
“Trust is the only metric that actually compounds.”
