THE NUTCRACKER CAPTURES THE COMMUNITY SPIRIT.
HEALTH + WELLNESS
ELITE HOSPITAL KINGWOOD REMINDS US TO CARE FOR OURSELVES AND OTHERS.

Dear Neighbors,

As the holidays draw near, I always find myself pulled toward the kitchen and my writing. Two spaces that have become my favorite kinds of therapy. There’s something about stirring a pot of soup on the stove or putting thoughts into a story. I love the comfort of a familiar broth, the scent of roasted vegetables filling the air, and the way writing helps me capture the essence of someone or a character I've imagined, often unfolding in my mind around a table. For me, the holidays aren’t about the rushing; they’re about genuine self-reflection. Cooking connects me to people, and writing reminds me of what it means to be human. Vulnerable and grateful for the moments of magic. It’s the simplest moments that bring the greatest joy: a warm meal, a kind word, and a story shared from the heart.
As you read through this issue, you’ll find stories that highlight the people and places that make our community special. You will read about neighbors making a difference, local causes that inspire hope, and businesses that embody the heart of Lake Houston. The holiday magic begins with The Nutcracker, where the Kingwood Ballet brings a beloved tradition to life. Addi's Faith Foundation reminds us of the importance of compassion and how kindness no matter how small can make all the difference. Elite Hospital Kingwood shares how their team gives back through community-centered care. We get a peek at shopping options in the area with our Holiday Shopping Guide, featuring local boutiques. Then , Blue Angel Santa Claus spreads cheer to the children across Lake Houston.
I hope that every page in this issue sparks moments of genuine self-reflection. No one person can build a community; just as no one ingredient can make soup. It takes pieces of all of us, mixed with care and purpose. Let us be mindful that the choices we make today often shape the future, just as in a story, what happens at the beginning can alter the trajectory of the ending. The questions I leave you with this season are: What ingredient will you choose to be? What kind of story in our community do you want to help create? Will it be a place you want to share with others tomorrow?
Thank you for being part of what makes Lake Houston not just a place to live, but a place to belong. A place we proudly call home.
With warmth,

BRINGING 40 YEARS OF HOLIDAY SPIRIT OF THE NUTCRACKER TO THE LOCAL COMMUNITY

Familiar notes of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker mark the beginning of the holiday season. For the Lake Houston area, that sound resonates at the Kingwood Ballet, a nonprofit pre-professional company dedicated to making the arts accessible and affordable for local community members.
Founded in 1984 by Cheryl Rowland, Kingwood Ballet, originally known as Kingwood Dance Theatre, was established to provide high-quality performances and meaningful opportunities for local dancers. Under the artistic direction of Kelly Agnew, the company has grown to include 60 dancers who train several days a week to bring world-class productions to the stage.
Beyond the stage, Kingwood Ballet dancers are active in the community they perform at events like Kingwood Country Club’s Children’s Night, Trunk or Treat at the Park, and participate with story time sessions at local libraries. These outreach efforts allow young dancers to share their passion for the arts while inspiring others to see dance as something that belongs to everyone.
Each November, the company hosts its whimsical Sugar Plum Tea fundraiser at the Nathaniel Center. The event features a children’s salon, boutique, and mini performance known as The Nutcracker in a Nutshell, with proceeds supporting costumes, sets, and guest artists. In the spring, Kingwood Ballet returns to the stage with its Fairy Tale Ballet Series, rotating beloved stories like Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, and Snow White.
Each year, the Kingwood Ballet partners with Atascocita High School’s theater department to present its full-length production of The Nutcracker. Tickets start at just $25, making it possible for families and organizations across the area to enjoy a professional-level performance without leaving the local area, avoiding Houston traffic and Downtown parking.

Kingwood Ballet is also an Honor Company in Regional Dance America’s Southwest Region, giving students opportunities to earn national scholarships and perform at regional and national festivals.
“Dance opens doors for students. Regional Dance America holds that door open for those who might not have access to larger auditions,” Kelly says.
This year’s performances of The Nutcracker will take place on December 6th and 7th at the Atascocita High School Performing Arts Theatre, featuring guest artist Jose Sebastian from the American Ballet Theatre. With the upgraded digital sets, animated snowfall, and stunning costumes, audiences can expect an enchanting, immersive, and professional-level experience for the whole family.

ARTICLE BY RORI ORTIZ | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADDI’S FAITH FOUNDATION | LOCAL CONTRIBUTORS
Addi’s Faith Foundation shines light, love, and community support for families facing childhood cancer.

Addi’s Faith Foundation was founded within a family’s story, a story of love, courage, and faith that transformed heartbreak into a mission of healing. What began with one family’s determination to bring light from loss has grown into a movement that now touches the lives of many families. For nearly two decades, Addi’s Faith Foundation has stood as a symbol of strength, offering comfort and hope to parents and children facing a tough battle against childhood cancer.
Amber and Tony Bender created the organization in honor of their daughter, Addison, whose brave spirit continues to inspire the foundation’s purpose. Their work focuses on helping families manage the everyday challenges that continue even during treatment. The foundation steps in to cover essential living expenses and ease emotional strain so families can focus on what matters most, their child. Whether it is a utility bill, a car payment, or groceries, these simple acts of support create meaningful relief.
Over the years, Addi’s Faith Foundation has grown from a local effort into a nationally recognized source of aid. Since its inception, the foundation has provided assistance to over 1,200 families and contributed more than $1 million in direct support. It also funds important research aimed at advancing treatments and finding cures for childhood cancer, ensuring that families not only receive help today, but are given hope for a brighter tomorrow. The organization continues to expand thanks to the generosity of the Lake Houston community.

Partners such as Elite Hospital Kingwood, MD Anderson, Shamrock Marine, Third Coast Bank, Kids ‘R’ Kids, the Pickle Ball Zone, G&S Tire, Elevations, TER Awaken, and many others play a vital role in sustaining the foundation’s efforts through sponsorships, donations, and volunteer engagements.
Each holiday season, that sense of unity comes to life through the foundation’s beloved Holiday Home Tour, returning December 5th & 6th. The event invites guests into decorated homes while enjoying festive tidings of the season.
Addi’s Faith Foundation continues to evolve with new goals of expansion. With Houston poised to become a national leader in pediatric cancer treatment within the next five years, the foundation has set its sights on reaching new milestones. The immediate goal is to surpass $1 million raised in 2025, paving the way toward a larger vision of generating $10 million annually within the next decade. This growth reflects the organization’s ongoing commitment to meet the increasing need for family assistance and research support.

For Amber and Tony, the heart of every success remains rooted in Addison’s story. Her life, though brief, continues to spark hope that ripples far beyond what they could have ever imagined. Her name represents resilience and the belief that love can see someone through the most challenging moments in life and turn them into something beautiful. Addison’s legacy shines and will be a guiding light, reminding the world that hope endures until a cure is found.
“The home tours have turned into a true community tradition,” Amber imparts. “People come together from all walks of life, connect, and leave with hearts full of hope.”
“We wanted to uplift the families even in just a small way,” Amber shares. “Sometimes paying a bill or receiving a kind message of encouragement reminds families they’re not alone in this fight.”
“Addie’s life reminds us that hope is powerful,” Amber says. “And that’s what we’re here to share, Hope.”

Showing compassion through this holiday season and year-round

The holidays are a time for connection and reflection. One community member we want to reflect on for their spirit of giving back is Elite Hospital Kingwood. The organization and those who work at the hospital live out that mission year-round. As a locally owned emergency hospital, their mission extends far beyond their front doors. Every initiative, partnership, and patient interaction ties back to one purpose: serving the community with excellence and heart.
“Being local means our patients are our neighbors,” shares Lauren Cash, M.A. Director of Brand Strategy & Community Engagement. “Many of our staff live here, so we take pride in giving back to the same community that trusts us with their care.”
That commitment shows in every partnership and outreach effort. From sponsorships with Humble ISD and New Caney ISD to volunteer work with Addi’s Faith Foundation and The Village Learning Center. Elite Hospital Kingwood supports organizations already making a difference in our local community. Their philanthropic philosophy is simple: strengthen the hands that are already helping others in our area. Earlier this year, the hospital’s annual Pickleball Tournament raised funds for Addi’s Faith Foundation. Inside the hospital, staff extended that same giving

spirit. By sponsoring classrooms, supporting teachers, and participating in a school supply drive. This Holiday Season, the hospital will participate in the HAAM (Humble Area Assistance Ministries) Community Wide Toy Drive. An initiative in which HAAM invites community members to drop off new or unwrapped toys to bring holiday cheer to local families.
During holiday-specific goings-on, the hospital team participates in festive dress-up days, gingerbread house-building contests, and hot cocoa rounds to show staff appreciation. The team is full of holiday people, and they give care with a smile. The organization supports its team because when they feel supported and joyful, patients also feel it.
“We know this time of year can be stressful, and people often delay care,” Cash explains. “But we want our community to know that if you need us, you won’t wait long. Our average wait time is seven minutes, and we accept all major insurance providers, including Medicare.”
As a 24/7 facility, it offers a convenient way to ensure local families receive the support they need during the holidays, and it also provides us a reminder to prioritize our own health. We are approaching the new year, and Elite Hospital Kingwood looks forward to expanding its local partnerships with schools and nonprofits across the area. Their goal remains the same: to combine exceptional care with compassion to support and keep our local community healthy.

Health tips provided by Dr. Chris Hummel, Medical Director at Elite Hospital Kingwood
DO LISTEN TO YOUR BODY.
Fatigue, chest tightness, or shortness of breath can signal something more serious.
DON’T DISMISS NEW OR UNUSUAL PAIN.
If discomfort lingers or includes dizziness or nausea, seek care promptly.
DO STAY HYDRATED AND REST.
Water, sleep, and brief breaks help you stay energized.
DON’T ASSUME STRESS IS ONLY MENTAL.
Stress can manifest physically through headaches, digestive issues, and muscle tension. Exercise, deep breathing, or even a short walk can help release built-up tension.
DO YOU KNOW WHEN TO SEEK CARE?
Sharp pain, fainting, sudden weakness, confusion, or severe shortness of breath, don’t wait... Visit your local emergency facility. Elite Hospital’s team is available 24/7, so you can return home to what matters most.
The holidays should be a time to celebrate. The best gift you can give yourself and your loved ones is peace of mind that you are healthy and your wellbeing is a priority.
It’s common for people to dismiss symptoms during the holidays, but waiting can ruin your plans and turn a small problem into a much bigger one.

ARTICLE BY RORI ORTIZ | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BLUE ANGEL SANTA CLAUS
Stepping away from his Blue Angel’s uniform and into a red velvet one wasn’t the retirement plan Jerry Czubinski imagined, but life has a way of leading us to uncharted new courses. After 25 years serving in the U.S. Navy, Jerry’s sense of duty found a new home in spreading joy as the Blue Angel Santa Claus.
Together with his wife, Carolyn, lovingly known as his Mrs. Claus, the two have made it their mission to spread the magic of Christmas by keeping it alive throughout the year. What began as a few FaceTime calls with his niece and some community appearances soon turned into something much greater.
From charity events to hospital visits, and virtual holiday greetings for specific homes straight from “Santa’s Office,” every encounter is an opportunity to remind families that the spirit of Christmas never truly fades.
Still, it is a journey that has carried him from community events, school programs, television appearances, and major holiday celebrations, including the Mayor’s Christmas Festival held at the George R. Brown. Wherever Czubinski goes, Blue Angel Santa Claus brings more than festive cheer. He brings Christmas comfort and hope. The transformation from sailor to Santa marks a new mission, going from ships on the sea to sleighs in the sky.
