Lessons I Didn't Expect

As summer begins to wind down, I always find myself reflecting on how much can change in just a few short months.

Before school starts, Mike and I try to carve out a little uninterrupted family time with Caleb (13) and Ella (10). This summer we escaped to Destin for a week, and somewhere between long walks on the beach and watching the sun set over the water, life seemed to slow down. It was a good reminder that some of our favorite memories aren't the big milestones. They're the simple moments we almost overlook.

Now we're home, easing back into soccer practices, theater rehearsals, horse lessons, and tumbling. Watching our kids discover who they're becoming is one of my greatest joys. It's also taught me that sometimes they end up teaching us, too.

One story in this issue is especially personal for me.

When I was a child, I was involved in a traumatic horse and carriage accident. For most of my life, horses represented fear. Then Ella fell in love with them.

Like most parents, I wanted to support what she loved, so I started spending time at the barn with her. At first, I stayed on the sidelines. Eventually, I found myself grooming horses, walking beside them, and becoming comfortable simply being in their presence. I'm still not ready to climb on one, but each visit has helped me heal a little more.

That's why Coyote Creek Sporthorses resonated with me. Tracy Thomas has created something truly special for individuals and families affected by cancer, and reading her story reminded me that healing doesn't always happen the way we expect. Sometimes it begins with showing up.

You'll also meet a Marine veteran whose passion for dogs grew into Semper Amici Canine Training, discover how Master David Ahn is helping children build confidence and character at K Taekwondo, learn why the science behind Full Scope Pest Control is changing the way families protect their homes, and find inspiration in Superb Janitorial's thoughtful approach to creating peaceful spaces. I also think you'll enjoy getting to know Trey and Katie Kennedy beyond their platforms.

These stories deserve to be shared. If one resonates with you, I'd love to hear about it. Tag @lakehoustoncitylifestyle or join the conversation when we share the editorials on social media. Those conversations are one of my favorite parts of what we do.

Warmly,

WHERE HORSES HELP HEARTS HEAL

A SURVIVOR TURNS HER JOURNEY INTO HOPE THROUGH HORSES

On 60 acres in Porter, Coyote Creek Sporthorses feels worlds away from the pace of northeast Houston. A creek borders the property, coyotes call at night, and deer wander through the fields. What began nearly 20 years ago as Crown Breeze Sporthorses has evolved into Coyote Creek, a family-owned equestrian facility offering boarding, training, lessons, and breeding.

Yet, the true heart of the property is found in the quiet moments between a horse and a person carrying something heavy.

For Tracy Thomas, that mission is deeply personal. A breast cancer survivor, Tracy remembers going through treatment surrounded by support but feeling isolated in ways only another survivor could understand. After her

own cancer journey, she wanted to create a place where people affected by cancer could come without cost, judgment, or expectations.

Through Coyote Creek’s nonprofit therapy program, cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, children, and loved ones affected by cancer can experience equine-assisted emotional healing. The program focuses on emotional wellness. Sessions take place on the ground, making the work less about riding and more about connection.

Many participants have never been around horses. Then they place a hand on a thousand-pound animal and something changes. Tracy has watched people break down in tears while brushing a horse, only to have the horse gently lower its head and lean closer.

“I always say I didn’t do anything,” Tracy says. “The horse did.”

Tracy often designs activities around each participant’s story. In one session, a woman grieving her sister wrote memories on blocks and placed them in a bucket while working with a horse named Bella. During the exercise, Bella reached into the bucket and tossed out a single block. The woman immediately recognized it as the memory she’d been unable to release.

For Tracy, moments like that are why the program exists.

What moved Marketing Director Tatiana Sweeney most was learning why Thomas created the nonprofit.

“Once I learned what Tracy was doing and why she was doing it, my first thought was, ‘What can I do to help?’” Tatiana says.

Tatiana has helped expand community awareness through marketing, signage, and website improvements. She believes one of the most important messages is that horses can impact anyone.

“You don’t have to get on a horse to appreciate it,” Tracy shares.

That philosophy extends throughout Coyote Creek. Head trainer Emma Baki grew up riding at the barn and eventually returned after college. She has helped grow the lesson program to nearly 80 students.

“Riding is about 10% of what you do with horses,” Emma says. “The rest is horsemanship.”

Emma wants riders to see horses as partners, not equipment.

Looking ahead, Coyote Creek plans to expand with an event venue for weddings, celebrations, and community gatherings. Yet, the mission that came first remains unchanged.

For those facing cancer, supporting a loved one through treatment, or learning how to move forward afterward, Coyote Creek offers something rare: a place to arrive exactly as they are.

It’s a mission that Greg Hord, one of the founding owners, also takes to heart.

“Greg is the heart of Coyote Creek,” says Tracy. “Without him, none of this would be possible.”

Sometimes healing begins with a brush in one hand and a horse leaning close enough to say, without words, you are not alone.

THE SEMPER DIFFERENCE

PERSONALIZED TRAINING, EXPERIENCED GUIDANCE, AND A COMMUNITY-CENTERED APPROACH TO CANINE SUCCESS

At Semper Amici Canine Training, dog training is about far more than teaching a dog to sit, stay, or come when called. It is about building trust, strengthening relationships, and helping owners better understand the dogs they love. Every lesson is designed to create confidence on both ends of the leash, while giving families the tools they need for long-term success.

Founded by Jose and Patty Sierra, Semper Amici was created from a lifelong passion for working with dogs and a desire to help families experience the joy that comes along with a welltrained canine companion. What began as a mobile training business in 2018 has grown into a thriving training facility serving dogs and owners throughout the region. While the business has expanded over the years, its mission has remained remarkably simple: help dogs and their families communicate more effectively and build stronger bonds.

Jose’s path to professional dog training began during his service in the United States Marine Corps. Selected as a Military Working Dog Handler, he completed two deployments to Iraq

alongside his Explosives Detection Dog, Gris. The partnership between handler and dog left a lasting impression and helped shape the philosophy that today drives Semper Amici. In fact, Gris remains such an important part of Jose’s journey that his likeness is featured on the company’s logo.

Following his military service, Jose continued working with dogs through Department of Homeland Security assignments, private security contracts, and advanced training programs. Along the way, he earned certifications and gained valuable experience handling dogs in high-pressure environments where trust, communication, and consistency were critical. Those experiences reinforced a belief that every dog can succeed when training is built around understanding, patience, and clear expectations.

That belief continues to guide the business today. Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach, every training program is customized to each dog, the owner’s goals, and the family’s lifestyle. Whether a client has a new puppy, a rescue dog, or a

“THE DOGS ARE OFTEN THE EASY PART. WHEN THE ENTIRE FAMILY IS ON THE SAME PAGE, IT UNLOCKS A WHOLE NEW LEVEL OF FREEDOM AND SUCCESS FOR THE DOG.”

companion needing more advanced obedience, the team develops a plan designed to create lasting results.

“We focus heavily on the owner,” Patty says. “The dogs are often the easy part. When the entire family is on the same page, it unlocks a whole new level of freedom and success for the dog.”

Services include puppy foundations, obedience training, behavior modification, and Canine Good Citizen testing. For alumni who

have already completed a puppy or obedience program through them, Semper Amici also offers boarding, daytime enrichment (their version of structured daycare), scent work, and advanced classes.

Semper Amici’s commitment to its clients extends well beyond the completion of formal training. Graduates become part of the Semper Amici alumni community, where ongoing education continues through group classes, public outings, and specialized activities. Classes are held in parks, coffee shops, and retail stores, helping dogs and owners practice their skills in real-world environments.

Behind every successful training session is a dedicated team of professionals who share the couple’s passion for canine education. Trainers Justin and Jessie bring extensive experience and a commitment to helping dogs reach their full potential. Senior Caretaker Andrea and Canine Care Team member Karla help ensure every dog receives attentive care, structure, and encouragement throughout their stay.

Together, the team has built more than a training facility. They have created a community where dogs and owners learn together, celebrate successes together, and continue growing long after training is complete. For the Sierras, success is not measured simply by obedience. It is measured by the stronger relationships, greater confidence, and deeper understanding that develop between dogs and the people who love them.

BEYOND THE BELT

When Master David Ahn first stepped onto a Taekwondo mat at 7 years old, he was simply a child looking for something fun and exciting to do. Like many young students, he had no way of knowing that the sport would eventually become both his passion and his life’s work.

Inside Master David Ahn’s Mission to Help Students Reach Their Potential
“I want every student to feel accepted, encouraged, and supported from the moment they walk through our doors.”—Master David Ahn

Today, as the owner of K Taekwondo in Kingwood, he has spent years helping students develop not only physical skills but also the character traits that will guide them throughout their lives.

His journey began in South Korea and eventually led him to Yong In University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in taekwondo. The experience exposed him to far more than just techniques and competition.

“As I continued training and later attended Yong In University as a taekwondo major, I began to see taekwondo differently,” Master Ahn says.

“Through my professors, classmates, competitions, demonstrations, and countless hours of practice, I learned that taekwondo is much more than kicking and punching. It teaches discipline, perseverance, respect, and personal growth.”

His education included sparring, poomsae, demonstrations, sports science, physical conditioning, and teaching methods. More importantly, it shaped the way he works with students today.

“The experience taught me that every student learns differently,” he says. “Some students respond to technical instruction, while others need encouragement and confidence-building.”

One of the most influential figures in his development was a professor who taught him the value of mastering the basics. That lesson has stayed with him throughout his career.

“He helped me understand the importance of fundamentals and showed me that true mastery comes from continually improving the basics,” Master Ahn says.

Although he has participated in many tournaments and demonstrations, he says his proudest accomplishment is not measured by medals or trophies.

“The accomplishment I am most proud of is earning my taekwondo degree and dedicating my life to teaching,” he shares. “Seeing students grow in confidence and character is more rewarding than any medal I have ever received.”

That passion for teaching inspired him to open K Taekwondo after serving as a martial arts supervisor at Bally Total Fitness in the Humble area. When the martial arts program closed, he saw an opportunity to create something of his own.

“I chose Kingwood because it felt like a community where families genuinely care about their children’s growth and development,” he says. “Over the years, Kingwood has become more than just the location of my business. It has become my home.”

Creating a welcoming environment remains one of his highest priorities.

“Starting something new can be intimidating, especially for children,” Master Ahn says. “I want every student to feel accepted, encouraged, and supported from the moment they walk through our doors.”

While students learn kicks, forms, and self-defense skills, he believes the greatest lessons happen beyond the physical training.

“Students learn respect, perseverance, self-control, responsibility, and how to overcome challenges,” he says. “They learn how to work hard toward goals and how to keep going even when things become difficult.”

The traditional values of taekwondo remain central to every class. Respect, courtesy, self-discipline, and perseverance are woven into daily instruction, while positive energy keeps students engaged.

What sets K Taekwondo apart, Master Ahn says, is its focus on the individual.

“My goal is not to make students fit into my vision of success. Instead, I want to help them discover their own strengths and become the best version of themselves,” he explains.

Looking toward the future, his mission remains remarkably clear: “My vision has never been simply to build a successful martial arts school. My vision is to help build strong people.”

If his students grow into confident adults who respect others, persevere through challenges, and become positive leaders in their communities, Master Ahn believes that will be the greatest success K Taekwondo could ever achieve.

EXP ERT ADVICE ON PROTECTING PETS, FAMILIES, AND THE PLACES THEY PLAY

SCIENCE BACKYARD

Camille Landry is an insect maven. A fascination with the animal realm ultimately brought her to put ants under a microscope as an entomologist.

“I love being in a research lab,” says Camille. “There’s something so interesting for me about the biology behind the animal world—but insects in particular are just so very resilient because of their structure, life cycles, and all the cool things they do.”

That curiosity and passion for understanding how insects function shaped much of her professional life. Camille, who is married to a fellow entomologist, obtained a graduate degree from Texas Tech University. She’s since had a storied career in the entomology field, building expertise in insect behavior, biology, and pest management.

Eight years ago, Camille left the corporate world for an unexpected new endeavor after meeting Derek Salazar. Together, the pair founded a science-based pest control business called Full Scope Pest Control.

“We both found ourselves looking for something different,” Camille says. “And that’s when we decided to start Full Scope Pest Control.”

The move allowed both founders to combine their unique backgrounds into a company with a distinctive approach to pest management. Derek had spent virtually his entire career in the pest control industry. He began working for a large pest control company when he was young, working his way up through the ranks into management and leadership roles.

“Most companies don’t have an entomologist on staff,” Camille explains. “And they certainly don’t have one who helped build the business from the ground up. My co-founder, Derek, brings decades of field and management experience, and I bring the science. It’s an ideal combination.”

That blend of scientific knowledge and practical field experience has become the foundation of Full Scope Pest Control’s philosophy. Camille and Derek offer tailored pest management for area residents. Rather than applying similar treatments to every home, Full Scope focuses on diagnosing why pests are present while identifying environmental factors that attract these unwelcome tenants.

“We’re not just trying to temporarily stop the problem,” Camille explains. “We try to solve it for you.”

Their approach often begins with understanding the conditions that allow pests to thrive in the first place. By focusing on prevention and long-term solutions, they help homeowners address issues before they become more serious.

Camille Landry

During this late summer season, they recommend sealing up entry points in your home. As temperatures and moisture levels fluctuate, insects, looking for shelter, often move indoors.

“Maintaining good exclusions on your doors and windows is the best way to keep things out,” Camille says.

Overgrown landscaping can also prove to be hazardous. The excess foliage can become a bridge for insects and may hide early signs of termite activity. Camille advises homeowners not to build mulch, soil, or plants up against siding and foundation walls. Keeping weep holes and foundation areas visible helps prevent pest problems and makes inspections easier.

Full Scope also recommends checking your irrigation system. Sprinklers hitting the house, standing water, and constantly damp soil can create ideal conditions for termites, carpenter ants, and other pests.

One surprising trend Camille has seen is a new onslaught of fleas. Even if pets are on flea medication, she notes that fleas can still be transported into yards and around homes. Preventive yard treatments can help reduce populations before they become a bigger issue, she says.

Overall, the best defense against late-summer pests is a combination of prevention, regular inspections, and addressing small issues before they become costly problems.

“When it comes to pest issues, it’s always much less expensive to prevent than to cure them,” Camille says.

Full Scope was founded on the concept of providing evidence-based pest management rather than relying on blanket treatments. Drawing on a profound understanding of insect biology, the company focuses on identifying the elemental cause of pest problems while reducing unnecessary chemical use.

“We’re very big on trying to reduce our chemical footprint,” Camille shares. “Our services are very targeted and purposeful. We use a lot of green products and baits that are very specific for insects. We’ve taken chemical use down to almost a minimum, and it works 10 times better.”

It’s a beautiful breath of fresh air for families as they secure their homes and yards during this fading summer season.

CREATE A WELCOMING HOME BEFORE THE SCHOOL BELLS RING

THE BACK-TO-SCHOOL RESET

ARTICLE BY JESSICA LAWRENCE

“WHEN YOUR HOME IS CLEAN AND ORGANIZED, IT CHANGES THE WHOLE ENVIRONMENT, FEEL, AND ENERGY.” —HEIDI DAMMAN

As hectic school beginnings loom on the horizon for families in the greater Lake Houston area, late summer marks the perfect occasion for a refresh. Embarking on a new semester with a spotless house and organized spaces may be top of mind for local homeowners.

“When your home is clean and organized, it changes the whole environment, feel, and energy,” remarks local cleaning expert Heidi Damman.

Heidi, the owner of Superb Janitorial, offers luxurious cleaning experiences. As the daughter of two well-established cleaning professionals, the art of a pristine space is her forte.

“I like to provide a luxury experience for our clients,” Heidi says. “We focus on attention to detail and creating a customized experience that fits each family’s specific needs. It’s truly about building a relationship of trust with them.”

She believes that a deep clean is the perfect way to beautifully maintain your home and to usher in the fall season. Focusing on areas that may often be overlooked can feel like a fresh start.

Giving a little more attention to baseboards, ceiling fans, air vents, window ledges, and interior windowpanes can invoke a positive mood.

“WHEN PEOPLE WALK INTO A CLEAN HOME OR BUILDING, IT HELPS THEM FEEL GOOD. THAT'S WHAT WE STRIVE TO PROVIDE EVERY DAY.”—HEIDI DAMMAN

These hidden dust collectors may also impact both appearance and air quality.

“I think a deep clean is a really good way to step into a new season of the year,” Heidi says. “It helps change the whole environment. Having a clean home can also help with allergies. Overall, it’s a great option to help with your health.”

Early autumn is an excellent time to get one step ahead of the busy holiday season. Heidi notes that many clients use this time to prepare their homes for family gatherings, holiday entertaining, overnight guests, and school activities.

The transition into fall presents an opportunity to tackle projects that are easy to postpone during the summer months. Cleaning guest rooms, refreshing linens, organizing pantries, and decluttering storage spaces can help homeowners feel prepared for the steady stream of visitors and celebrations that often accompany the holiday season.

Heidi reminds us that a clean home isn’t just about appearances. Homeowners can also consider organizing homework stations, decluttering entryways, refreshing children’s bedrooms, and creating dedicated backpack and shoe drop zones in order to be one step ahead of the busy school season.

Beyond creating inviting interiors, Heidi explains that regular cleanings can help families reclaim time and reduce stress during the most hectic chapters of life. Whether serving homeowners or local businesses, her goal is to create spaces that feel nothing short of welcoming.

“Having a positive impact on residents and business owners is really important to me,” she says. “When people walk into a clean home or building, it helps them feel good. That’s what we strive to provide every day.”

As families settle into new routines this fall, a clean, organized home may provide a sense of calm amid the seasonal rush.

TREY & KATIE KENNEDY

ON MARRIAGE, KIDS, AND THE COMEDY OF REAL LIFE

Trey Kennedy makes a living finding comedy in regular life. Marriage. Toddlers. Yoga pants. The Thursday-night scramble between school dropoffs, soccer practice, and whatever has to be done by morning. Twelve years in, it shows: millions of followers across every platform, three stand-up specials, a sold-out Relatable Tour, and a style of humor fans send each other captioned, “Are you watching me?” He delivers the kind of comedy that travels because everyone’s living some version of it.

Katie, his wife of six years, is a former biomedical engineer who also built a modeling career. She’s now raising their kids and co-hosting Correct Opinions alongside Trey — the show where the two of them swap takes on marriage, parenting, and whatever came up that week.

Trey has been at this longer than people realize. An Edmond, Oklahoma kid who grew up playing basketball described himself as a “shy kid who never thought he’d be an entertainer.” He started making videos while attending Oklahoma State University. After building millions of followers on Vine before the platform shut down, he gave himself six months on Instagram and Facebook to see whether he could rebuild from zero. He did. Stand-up soon followed. His first special, Are You For Real?, streams on YouTube; the second, Grow Up, on Amazon Prime; the third, built around the Relatable Tour, wrapped earlier this year. “I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now,” he says. A slow climb, made one bit at a time.

“I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now.”

Most of what Trey writes lately starts in his own kitchen. Thomas is three and a half, and he is, in his father’s words, “a movie.” He narrates his own life from the moment his eyes open and mispronounces words in ways his parents now repeat to each other because no one else would believe them. His younger sister, Eva, is what Katie calls “the calm one.” With a third now in the mix, the Kennedys are officially outnumbered.

After six years of marriage, Trey and Katie have learned that the partnership runs best when it gets its own time on the calendar. So once a week, they leave the kids with a sitter and go out for coffee. “You need a system,” Katie says. “It’s about taking time to look each other in the eye. Not the kids. Not the cameras. Just each other.”

The same instinct shapes the work. Most of Trey’s trial and error happens onstage or on Instagram, but the first read is always Katie’s. “There’s only been one time ever I’ve had to be like, ‘you’re not doing that,’” she says. The rest of the time, she just laughs first.

Trey and Katie talk about marriage, parenting, and the moments that don’t make the Instagram feed.
