LIFESTYLE LETTER

Welcome Fall!

October 2022 PUBLISHER

Michael Gerard | michael.gerard@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR

Barbara Kimler

With the changing seasons comes a change in what we are craving, and with fall that often means comfort food. October is our most delectable issue of the year, filled with some of our favorite dishes and beverages available in South County. We had the pleasure of attending the OC Festival of Chefs recently and what an event it was! Some of the finest chefs in Orange County showed up and shared their culinary creations in support of the tremendous cause, KidWorks. You can read all about it on page 26. There is an art to creating a flavorful dish that not only satisfies our taste buds but evokes memories. The aroma of certain spices and foods can bring us right back to our childhood kitchen table, which can be incredibly powerful and comforting. Food brings us all together, and whether we are sharing a meal with loved ones or enjoying a night out on the town, the time spent while enjoying food is invaluable. As always, thanks for reading, and we’ll see you around town!

La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs offers members unique and exclusive culinary experiences showcasing world-renowned cuisine and wine

14

C ULIN A RY C R E AT ION S | F OOD + BE VE RAGE

Orange County is home to three chapters of a little-known culinary society with a very rich history. Dedicated to the art and camaraderie of fine dining, La Chaîne des Rotisseurs is an international food and wine organization that dates back to 1248 under Saint Louis, King of France and the Guild of Rôtisseurs. Originally comprised of members connected to the noblest of families of France, its current seal is based on the coat of arms by a royal warrant it received in 1610. After a period of inactivity, it was revived in 1950 following World War II and La Confrèrie de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs was officially incorporated and restored by Act of the French Government. Chapters worldwide bring together both professionals and enthusiasts of food and wine to celebrate the pleasures of the table while enjoying the classic and evolving cuisines of the world. Laguna Niguel resident David Weinberg joined the Newport Beach chapter soon after moving to the area in 1990 from Cincinnati where his father led a chapter. Weinberg is the Bailli (president/chairman) of the Newport Beach Bailliage which includes chef member Tony Esnault (Knife Pleat). The other two Orange County chapters are South Coast and Laguna Beach. Local members are immersed in a fine dining experience four to five times a year. The Bailliage fosters the interaction of chefs, sommeliers and members in providing presentations of food and wine. In Weinberg's words, “You can’t replicate the experience.” The affairs are in private settings and generally begin with champagne while members greet one another and connect with the culinary staff. Board members take great

pride in organizing elegant and sophisticated, yet accessible events for members and guests. Historically, the chapter has emphasized classic and innovative French cuisine while recognizing the other great cuisines of the world. Previous dining venues include Marche Moderne, Antonello’s, Big Canyon Country Club, El Niguel Country Club, Bello Sandro, the Pacific Club, Vaca, Knife Pleat and The Hobbit. And while the enjoyment of fine food and wine is the common denominator, a key objective is promoting lasting friendships. Seating arrangements are predetermined so there is always an interesting mix of guests and conversation. Their goal whenever possible is to foster the relationship between friendship, cuisine, wine, music and art. The member organization has initiation fees and annual dues and emphasizes long-term commitment among its members, other chapters, and the international Chaîne. Weinberg also cites incredible opportunities to travel and dine throughout the world through the organization. The Newport Beach Bailliage welcomes enthusiasts of the culinary arts but limits its roster to no more than fifty members and spouses to best take advantage of small venues and intimate events. All chapters provide support to the Chaîne Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides scholarships to deserving culinary, hospitality and oenological students while promoting competitions among young chefs and sommeliers on both the local, national and international levels. For more history and national information, visit chaineus.org or for details about the Newport Beach chapter visit newportbeach.chaineus.org

Estate Planning Attorney Discusses Work and Family Life in Laguna Niguel ARTICLE BY MIKE GERARD | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KAREN REUTER

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | FINANCE + LE GAL S E RVI CE S

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN LAGUNA NIGUEL AND WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT IT? My husband and I moved to Laguna Niguel in 2009. Laguna Niguel instantly felt like “home” and that this is where we belong. Even with over 66,000 residents, Laguna Niguel has that small-town vibe where people look out for each other.

W H AT D O YO U D O TO M A I N TA I N A W O R K / LI F E B A L A N C E ? I enjoy spending time with my family and volunteering to make our community better. Things don’t always balance perfectly, but whatever I’m doing, I devote 100% of my attention to it. The key is to make sure that my priorities rotate, and everything has a turn.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS, WINSTEAD LAW GROUP, APC. WHAT DOES IT DO? We practice exclusively in estate planning law, meaning that we primarily prepare Wills, Trusts, Powers of Attorney, Advance Health Care Directives, etc. as needed to address a person’s healthcare decisions upon their incapacity and smoothly transition assets upon their death. We also advise families following their loved one’s death.

YOU ARE CHAIR OF THE LAGUNA NIGUEL PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION. WHAT’S THAT LIKE? This is my third year serving on the Parks & Recreation Commission and I’m honored to serve as the Chair. I believe that access to parks and community activities makes life better. I enjoy working with city staff to add new activities for residents, including the Halloween House decorating contest.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF ABOUT THE WORK YOU DO? We do more than merely prepare legal documents. Every estate plan is unique and tailored to each client. I take pride in getting to know each of my clients, understanding their concerns, and providing legal advice ensuring that their documents accurately reflect their desires and accomplish their goals. IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE A DIFFERENT JOB, WHAT WOULD IT BE? I would be an Investigator for the Sheriff’s Department. I rarely take things at face value. Rather, I enjoy digging deeper and asking “Why” because it helps me make more fully informed decisions.

WHAT OTHER COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED WITH? I started serving the City of Laguna Niguel in 2012 on the Investment, Banking and Audit Committee. For 6 years I served on the Traffic & Transportation Commission and served as Chair for 2 years. I also served on the Board of Directors for the Laguna Niguel Chamber of Commerce and chaired the Chamber in 2019. TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY... AND WHAT DO YOU ALL DO FOR FUN? My husband and I have been married for 21 years and we have a 9-year-old son. We believe in the Work Hard - Play Hard lifestyle. Whether it’s boating, biking, building, baking, or bocce, it doesn’t matter what we’re doing. As long as we’re together, it’s fun.

WINE TOUR EXPLORING THE NAPA VALLEY WINE COUNTRY ARTICLE BY MIKE GERARD

When you are ready for your next wine adventure, we have you covered. Here’s the inside scoop on some of our favorite places to eat, drink, and stay in one of the world’s premier wine regions. Salute!

18

T R E N D SE T T E R | FOOD + BE VE RAGE

NAPA VALLEY Deemed a wine lover’s paradise, Napa Valley, just 30 miles long and five miles wide, is made up of the perfect topography, climate and soil to harvest renowned Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon wines. With great wine also comes fine dining, deluxe lodging, popular events and modern culture. It’s no wonder tourists flock to Napa Valley, last year welcoming a total of 3.85 million visitors. Not bad for a wine community that has barely been on the radar for 40 years! How did the Valley’s popularity rise so quickly? Knowing a little slice of history before you go will spark intrigue and work wonders for conversation upon arrival. In the wine world, there is “before the Paris tasting” and “after the Paris tasting.” At the “Judgment of Paris” in the spring of 1976, nine top wine judges gathered in Paris to blindly taste 10 white and 10 red wines. Knowing that some wines were from France and some from California, the French judges were confident that the French wines would win. To their surprise, California’s wines triumphed. And 40 years later, that tasting still matters. Prior to the judgment, French wines ruled the world, and there were about 67 wineries in Napa Valley. Post-judgment, the tasting results shot Napa Valley into the limelight, where today there are nearly 500 wineries. Indeed, the “Judgment of Paris” was the turning point for not only California’s wine country but for the wine industry as a whole. Napa Valley truly deserves multiple trips to experience the variety it has to offer. If it’s your first time visiting, don’t be afraid of visiting hotspots that may be a bit more touristy; remember that there’s a reason for its popularity. Here are a few notable stops to help narrow down your search.

DRINK

TIP: It’s always a good idea to schedule winery appointments well in advance of your visit.

Del Dotto Vineyards: Three different locations offer more than 100 different cabs. Be sure to book a cave tour. Darioush: The gorgeous architecture and grounds of Darioush match the elite quality of their wine. Their artisan cheese and wine pairing experience is fantastic. Domaine Chandon: If bubbles are your thing, you can’t do much better than bubbles on the patio at Domaine Chandon. Robert Mondavi: It holds rich family history, award-winning wine and beautiful grounds. Don’t miss the Fumé Blanc, which remains signature and one of Robert Mondavi Winery’s most popular wines. Shafer Vineyards: It is located in the notable Stags Leap District with picturesque rolling hill views. This James Beard award-winning, family-owned winery is worth a visit. Far Niente: Take your time in this stunningly gorgeous estate. Far Niente is consistently recognized as a benchmark producer of Napa Valley Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. Scribe: Just outside of Napa, located in Sonoma, this charming winery is worth a visit on your way in or out of town. They produce vibrant, terroir-driven wine and serve it amidst a true California-vibe setting.

The Second Annual Festival of OC Chefs, benefiting KidWorks, was held Sunday, July 17 at Newport Beach Country Club. ARTICLE BY DONNA BUNCE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BOB HODSON AND REZA ALLAHBAKHSHI The popular food festival, which featured 34 chefs, drew 400 guests to mingle and sample the scrumptious fare. Renowned wineries, such as Duckhorn, Crown Point, Schramsberg, Three Sticks, and Chateau Montelena, were also a part of the mix. Guests were later seated on the lawn to sample desserts and be introduced to the chefs by emcee DawnMarie Kotsonis. KidWorks’ incoming Board Chair and event co-chair Cory Alder shared the KidWorks’ story. Involved with the charity for 16 years, he lauded the nonprofit’s academic support, character and leadership development programs that empower students in Orange County’s underserved neighborhoods from pre-K through their

college years. Despite the pandemic challenges, he said the nonprofit is addressing mental health challenges, making plans to expand into additional satellite campuses and adding programs to include Friday nights and Saturdays. “Despite all the challenges,” Alder said, “this is the eighth year in a row, we have 100% high school graduations and 100% college graduations.” Fun was had as guests joined the Heads or Tails Game, with one guest left standing to claim the $500 prize. Luis Lopez was the winner of the 50-bottle premium wine tree raffle, generously donated by Mona Lee Nesseth and valued at $2,500. He generously donated it back to KidWorks, and it was auctioned for $5,500 to benefit the charity. CONTINUED > OCTOB ER 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/L AG UN A N I G UE L
