Community Matters

SEPTEMBER 2017 PUBLISHER

O

ne thing I've learned this summer is that La Jolla has a deep-rooted sense of community. A lot of towns and cities say they do but La Jolla walks the walk! With summer winding down, the tourists will slowly fade into the sunset. Our town will once again be ours. We are blessed with our jewel and share it with millions of those that pass through for a sunset shot, to see the cove, to meet the sea lions, to stroll our sidewalks…La Jolla is an international destination yet a collection of neighborhoods that we get to call home.

Each month, La Jolla Lifestyle celebrates community. This month, we spotlight Brett Murphy, who, along with his wife Kera, owns the La Jolla Sports Club. This popular center of our community is not just a place to work out but where locals gather - to talk about what matters, where life is going and to make their footprints on La Jolla for the day. Check out Brett's favorite things when we join him during the week as he goes about connecting with the community. Another important part of the fabric of La Jolla is our furry friends. La Jolla's dogs are featured on page 8 for the La Jolla Veterinary Hospital’s 4th annual Paws for Pints event. We're proud to also bring back a feature we are making a regular with our La Jolla Unleashed column on page 24. We're here to tell your story La Jolla, so if you have an event to promote or cover, let us know. If you have a feature story we should hear about - we're all ears...send us an email or connect with us on social media. What's happening in town, schools, local charities and local business is our focus! Community starts with you - thanks for reading, thanks for engaging, thanks for sharing and thanks for caring about what matters!

Proven Healthy... Made Fresh Daily in Del Mar

Photography by Dogma Pet Portraits

In a world where pet food can include any number of ingredients that would not only turn your stomach... but might well turn your dog’s, we bring you the only brand of pet food with wide open kitchens, USDA certified ingredients, veterinary trained Consultants, and a level of transparency never before seen in the pet food business. We started JustFoodForDogs seven years ago and in the process invented the fastest growing segment of the pet food industry - fresh whole food diets. These diets are made with ingredients certified by the USDA for human consumption but are nutritionally balanced for pets. Our 8 staff veterinarians have been specifically trained in canine and feline nutrition and they work to ensure the recipes are the very best they can be. In September, we will open our 10th location just up the I-5 in the Del Mar Highlands Town Center. We invite you to come by and tour something you have likely never seen before - chopping, grinding, cooking and packaging of restaurant grade ingredients... all for your pets! We are pleased to state that our diets have been proven healthy through a year long, university conducted study. Such research is extremely rare and we are very proud of the way our products performed. Perhaps this is why hundreds of veterinarians in the greater LA area routinely

recommend our food for their patients. We offer seven daily diets, a line of prescription food for sick dogs, and a custom formulation service for pets with Special needs. Have questions? Our veterinarian trained Consultants are quite simply the best. They can help you and or your vet decide which products are right for you. To learn more about us please visit justfoodfordog.com or call us 7 days a week at: 858.284.0747. Del Mar Kitchen 3485 Del Mar Heights Rd., A-2 San Diego, CA 92130 (next to Starbucks)

Desi

Desi "Arnaz" is a handsome Havanese therapy dog who prances on well-manicured paws

through the hallways and streets of La Jolla. He's also known for "dancing" when he's excited to see somebody; or perhaps wants some serious affection. He's often stopped by adoring fans who can't resist the urge to offer the 7-year-old black and white dog a few  pets and satisfying belly rubs. As it turns out, Desi even has a little Havanese female protégé named Lucy, a therapy dog in training. A doggie romance destiny? Perhaps. But for Desi, work comes first. A licensed therapy and service dog, the friendly pooch visits folks in his home of the White Sands every week to offer companionship, warmth and, of course, unconditional love. His owner, La Jollan Dee Swartz, says Desi "feels people's emotions." So, if someone needs him in their lap for some joy, he's happy to oblige.  Often, Desi has little Lucy shadowing him while learning the ropes of service. The Desi-Lucy duo make for an attractive team. The fact that they're both Havanese which originate from Havana, Cuba and share the first names of the beloved Desi and Lucy from the "I Love Lucy" show must mean they were struck by a doggie cupid. Ahhh, love.

The firm was fully involved in the design of this 12,000 sq. ft. Rancho Santa Fe home from the time it broke ground. Silvina Petrate, founder and owner of Nativa, traveled the world to source unique pieces for every room.  The relationship started when the owner of the house visited Petrate's showroom looking for a unique kitchen table to be used by his large family of four kids and their friends. She custom built a 15 ft. long table out of Green Ironwood, a precious wood from her native Argentina.

The master bedroom furniture was built using walnut and cherry wood, the fabrics are Italian silk.

SAPPHIRE the stone of peace ROCKING WITH MADE IN EARTH

M

ore commonly known as the blue variety of corundum, sapphire can in fact be almost any color of the rainbow (including a rare

color-change sapphire), a little known fact that is always received with widened eyes of surprise. Having said that, the red variety of corundum is known as ruby, the other much loved and adored gem and this is yet another nugget of information most are unaware of. Today, this gem is known as the stone for joy and peace. However, tradition-

ally, sapphire has always been a stone that symbolizes nobility, truth, faithfulness and sincerity. Its association with royalty and romance was reinforced when Britain’s Princess Diana received her 12-carat oval Ceylon sapphire, the new benchmark for exquisite blue sapphire. Interestingly, in its purest state, corundum is colorless and owes its varying hues to traces of metallic oxides. Fine velvety blue is the most sought after, with golden yellow and pink becoming increasingly popular. Other colors are, but not limited to, pale blue, blackish or greenish blues, purple-violet, green, brown, black and the rare pink/orange ‘padparadscha’ sapphires from Sri Lanka. Parti-colored stones (a mix of two or three colors) can present a unique and interesting gem and are quite common in Australia, Madagascar and Tanzania. Synthetics, treatments and imitations are extremely common for sapphires and so finding a completely natural, unadulterated, high grade sapphire over 5 carats in size is extremely rare. Extremely. Fine needles of rutile (referred to as silk) are a very common inclusion and when paired with straight or angular color bands can be diagnostic of a natural stone. Not all inclusions are ‘bad’, they’re the battle scars and something we should learn to love and appreciate, particularly since sources are not as abundant as they once were. Bunny Bedi, owner and designer at Made In Earth, has discovered beauty in some of these lower quality sapphires. “We aim to keep our prices within a certain range, this range doesn’t accommodate for fine gem quality sapphires. It does, however, have room for some stunning Sri Lankan stones. Some are parti-colored gems with blends of green-orange, blue-red and brown-yellow and can have quite beautiful silk running through the stone showing chatoyancy when light is reflected from beneath the surface.” Madeinearthus.com 30
