Hey Dads & Dudes!

JUNE 2017 PUBLISHER

I

so want to say welcome to summer and yes, in a few weeks, it will be that according to the calendar…but I think, in spirit and energy, it has already arrived. That’s the beauty of living here. Many people say we don’t have true seasons but I think we do - we almost have two seasons…‘Almost Summer’ and ‘Summer’. There are possibly a few days of June gloom we may have ahead but there is plenty of sunshine, surf and beach fun in your future to look forward to.

This month, we wanted to salute some of the Men of Influence in our community. This is by no means every guy who is making a mark in the community but a few of the dudes that are shaping what is next for us. I hope you enjoy learning their story and sharing in their larger than life personalities as much as we did. Father’s Day is coming up, and while we featured some great spots to celebrate mom in town last month, see what the men in your life want to enjoy this month and take the day to make it happen. I still remember golf with my dad who started my passion for the game and just enjoying a good evening fire out with family. I thank my dad every day for a work hard, play hard attitude! This year, I’m looking forward to seeing the summer through the eyes of my son Sam. He is quite the little man already with his passion for aviation and sea life. Bringing his creative ideas to life will provide lifelong learning for him and a lifetime of opportunities for teaching, support and appreciation for me. Hope you find some great ideas in this issue for celebrating the men in your life, and will share your memories with us on our social media channels below.

Still, Dr. Bob chooses to find the beauty in moments he experiences with his patients. “There are joyful events in the midst of difficult circumstances that they cherish, and I do too.” Before working in palliative and end of life care, Dr. Bob was an emergency physician. he would do everything in his power to bring people back from the edge of death, regardless of the outcome. He now understands that this approach can be short-sighted and insensitive to what many people would want. The transition may seem unnatural – shifting from a career of saving lives at all costs to supporting those at the end of life. Through personal experiences, however, Dr. Bob discovered that dying could be a beautiful and dignifying process. He has provided in-home, end of life care for a close friend diagnosed with cancer, as well as for both of his parents. He believes he has found his calling. Dr. Bob maintains that his work as a palliative care physician is just as meaningful and fills a void that has long been ignored by the traditional healthcare system. As a mentor, guide, sounding board and friend, Dr. Bob’s patients rely on him for support in life’s most challenging moments. Sometimes, it is as simple as providing information about the illness or aging process to patients so that they can understand what is to come. Other times, it involves helping a family get their loved one out of a hospital or nursing home and providing the care they need right at home. “We are all going to die, we cannot change that, but we can help reduce the fear of what will happen before we die,” Dr. Bob says. “Once you can remove that fear, then people are open to experiencing the real power of a life ending. We remove barriers to being connected and sharing love.” The greatest downside to his model of care, Dr. Bob confesses, is that not everyone will be able to afford it, since his services are not paid for by insurance. To meet the needs of community members that may not be able to afford this model of care, Dr.

Bob is helping to create a foundation so that other families may be able to experience the same level of support and access to the healing therapies that his own patients receive. Providing compassionate care for patients nearing the end of life, freeing them from pain or suffering, and helping them be completely present in life’s final moments, is a gift. To give that gift, Dr. Bob says, is an honor. IntegratedMDCare.com

CHILL OUT FOR BETTER HEALTH CHILTONIC CRYOTHERAPY ARTICLE MAILE PROCTOR | PHOTOGRAPHY JAMIE DICKERSON, J.DIXX PHOTOGRAPHY

L

ooking for a cool new spot to chill in La Jolla? Chiltonic is just the place! While you may only be able to hang out there for about three minutes at a time, you can walk away with a number of benefits, including reduced pain and inflammation, weight loss, and wellness. Chiltonic is a cryotherapy center where you can stand in a cryotherapy chamber that releases liquid nitrogen in its gas form. What this does is cool your body down quickly and reduce systemic inflammation. The nitrogen sends signals to your brain to create vasoconstriction, which brings all the blood up to the core. While the blood is circulating, it becomes oxygenated and helps the immune system to reduce pro-inflammatory proteins and increase anti-inflammatory proteins. Chiltonic has one wholebody chamber and schedules appointments every 10 minutes, to be able to service up to 100 people a day. Although the number of treatments may vary by individual, cryotherapy sessions can help to reduce pain from chronic medical conditions or athletic or overuse injuries, reduce inflammation, improve

24

La Jolla Lifestyle | June 2017

circulation, speed up recovery, and enhance athletic performance. While Chiltonic clients range in age from 25-65, the minimum age is 15 and the process is great for student athletes. Chiltonic co-owner Matthew Bergman is a former BMX athlete who tried cryotherapy for the first time at a three-day spa event in Del Mar. He has been an advocate for cryotherapy since his first session and explains how cryotherapy helped him personally with soreness and injuries. “It was pretty straightforward,” Matthew says. “I was amazed that I could feel that good that quickly, I felt it right away.” But what really sold him on crytherapy was the fact that it helped his wife Gretchen, who is also the co-owner of Chiltonic, manage her chronic back pain that she experienced after back surgery. “If you’ve ever watched someone you care about deal with pain, you know you will do anything on God’s great pasture to help,” he says. “When cryotherapy came along, I thought maybe my wife could benefit. Sure enough, after about six months, she no longer had the flare ups or the chronic pain.”

Gretchen shares, “I suffered from chronic back pain, and I tried everything - acupuncture, massage, chiropractor…but when I tried cryotherapy, I noticed an immediate difference. I thought, “This is amazing, why doesn’t this exist in San Diego with so many fitness and health-oriented people?”” The first Chiltonic location opened in Encinitas in 2015, and there are now three locations including Hillcrest and La Jolla. The Bergmans have plans to open more locations in San Diego County and expand up the coast in the near future. They have partnered with a private health management company and will soon be able to offer more anti-inflammatory modalities, services and products. One of the most amazing things about cryotherapy is its versatility - it works for chronic pain but it can also help athletes recover after training, it can help to speed up healing after surgery but it can also rev up your metabolism and improve sleep, mood, and reduce stress, anxiety and depression. “Some of our clients are amateur athletes and triathletes,” Gretchen says. “All of a sudden, after a few sessions, they’re hitting personal records in their events or their performance is improving rapidly, or they feel more fresh the next day after training.” While Chiltonic has fantastic benefits for athletes, it can help casual fitness enthusiasts as well or anyone looking for a refreshing, invigorating experience. Chiltonic offers a $20 first-time visit special and hosts unique spa events monthly. If you are on the fence about trying cryotherapy, consider this - unlike an ice bath, you remain dry inside the cryotherapy chamber. You also won’t experience any shocking cold temperatures. In fact, five minutes after you get out of the chamber, you’ll be warm again and feel instantly better. As Matthew says, “Seeing people arrive here in pain and leave feeling better, that is one of the best parts of what we do.” Chiltonic.com

osmetic Laser Dermatology (CLDerm) is a world-renowned dermatology center, off Genesee Avenue in La Jolla, specializing in cosmetic procedures. The practice is comprised of five highly distinguished professionals in the skin care field: Dr. Mitchel P. Goldman, Dr. Kimberly J. Butterwick, Dr. William F. Groff, Dr. Sabrina G. Fabi, and Dr. Douglas C. Wu. At CLDerm, patients receive a variety of the most advanced treatments, including injectables, laser treatments, body contouring and vein treatments. Regular patients at CLDerm continually highlight the exceptional compassion and attention each board-certified dermatologist demonstrates. 26

La Jolla Lifestyle | June 2017

A veteran CLD patient of 20 years shares, “I have had all kinds of fillers done and also had moles removed, without any scarring and minimal bruising, so why would I go anywhere else! The staff is friendly and I have never had to wait more than 10 minutes.” Other patients credit their loyalty to “the warm and welcoming staff and clear expertise and knowledge” of the practicing professionals. Beyond the direct impact of bettering the lives of patients in San Diego, the doctors all maintain an involved presence in the community through various events and foundations. A staff favorite is their engagement with the Challenged Athletes Foundation where they support physically impaired athletes and offer care to the San Diego cycling community when they have cycling accidents. Dr. Mitchel P. Goldman, founder of CLD and nationally recognized dermatologist and surgeon, has recently decided to expand the current practice to incorporate more medically focused concerns by teaming up with West Dermatology. Although the two practices will operate as separate neighboring clinics, they will work cohesively

to provide patients with the best combination of medical and cosmetic care. Current clients of CLD and new clients at West Dermatology will have access to the same aesthetic procedures and treatments, with the additional opportunity of referral for medical conditions and skin defects. On the intentions of the merge, Dr. Goldman says, “The synergy of care, especially for skin cancer and promotion of research, will help us to continue providing the San Diego community with the most advanced dermatology care possible.” West Dermatology primarily caters treatments to the individual using the latest technologically advanced equipment and techniques. Medical conditions often examined and subsequently treated include skin cancer, acne, eczema,

psoriasis, rosacea, allergies, age spots, hair loss, warts and many more. For each specific condition and client, the highly acclaimed team designs a unique treatment plan, including excisions, laser, topical therapies and numerous others. With West Dermatology right next door, patients experiencing medical issues will not only receive the top care available in the field but also the benefit of specialized dermatologists referring clients in order to provide the most optimal care possible. Further, the joint practices will now be able to accept medical insurance and the ongoing research will be greatly expanded. CLDerm currently supports ongoing clinical trials pertaining to acne, rosacea, dermatitis, wrinkles, psoriasis and wound healing. After the merge, the research will explore new

innovative technology and treatments for medical and cosmetic skin concerns. Beyond the many new benefits granted to patients, Dr. Goldman also mentions, “We support and promote free skin cancer screenings and provide free care to cancer victims undergoing radiation therapy (treating and preventing radiation dermatitis) as well as free tattoo removal of radiation tattoo markers. Finally, on a case-bycase basis, we offer free or discounted care to children with birthmarks and others with traumatic injuries.” West Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center and West Dermatology Research Center are currently under construction, with plans to open by July1st.
