LIFESTYLE LETTER

It’s the little choices.

January 2024 PUBLISHER

Johnny Gillespie | Johnny.gillespie@citylifestyle.com Taylor Stutts | taylor.stutts@citylifestyle.com E D I TO R

John-Mark Dyer | johnmark.dyer@citylifestyle.com

Dear Friends, Happy New Year! As we step into January, I’m excited to bring our health and wellness edition into your homes along our beautiful coastline. Daily health and a sense of well-being are something we all hope for, especially at the start of a new year. I believe that personal health and wellness isn’t just about the latest diet trend or the fanciest gym equipment. It’s about the little choices I make every day that set the trajectory and tone of my life. Sometimes, this means doing something that’s just for me, that’s fun and refreshing. But usually, this means picking the tougher option. Maybe it’s waking up an hour earlier for that sunrise jog or choosing a salad over a burger. Sometimes it’s choosing to have that honest conversation that's hard but necessary to take a friendship forward. It’s not always easy, but I’ve found that these little choices can lead to big rewards. In these pages, you'll find stories inspiring you in this direction. We have an amazing story about long-distance swimming. We highlight treatments to support your immune system and help you look and feel great. We brought in a marriage and family therapist to speak about the importance of relationships. We also made sure to include some fun, highlighting a local hotspot for nightlife. There will be something for everyone to learn from and be inspired. We are particularly excited to highlight Malama Chiropractic with a focus piece. The story that led Dr. Jesse Broderson to become a fixture in the Kona Coast community is a good one that moved me, and I hope it moves you too. This year, I’m challenging myself to make those hard choices more often, and I invite you to join me. Let's do it together, whether it's trying a new workout, giving your best to a close relationship, or simply taking time to relax and unwind. Remember, health and wellness are journeys, not destinations. Take the next step. Figure out where you want to grow and commit to putting in the work. Let’s enjoy the process, and see where it might lead. Aloha,

the fundamentals.” Too many write it off when we are told to get good sleep, eat better, or exercise, but these very things are the pillars of our bodies' health. How can we expect it to heal itself effectively when we are not giving it what it needs? And then there are things we often don’t consider: toxins, like mold, in our environment, filtering our drinking water, or doing something fun to relieve our body's stress. Though now a mother with young children, Dr. Roberts cherishes her limited time at her gym, Ho’omana Strength and Conditioning, as part of her own health journey. So, if you are struggling like so many in the world today, think about how you can improve the quality of your food or what environmental pollutants may be affecting you at home. Unplug and go for an ocean swim or walk in the cloud forest. Maybe with a little less stress and a little more care, we can start making healthy the new normal. Regularly today, we consider chronic conditions “normal” as fatigue, allergies, and gut issues continue to rise. However, not everyone is ready to live with an undefined problem. That’s where Dr. Kristina Roberts steps in. Her practice, Kona Integrative Health, seeks to find and address the causes of disease, not suppress symptoms, and to promote the body’s biological ability to heal through personalized holistic care. For many, KIH, is their last desperate resort, coming in with blanket diagnoses, like fibromyalgia or autoimmune disorders, and long lists of medications. While fully supportive of pharmaceuticals, like with anything else there is a time and place. Too often people today are surviving on medication for unexplained symptoms, rather than finding the root of them. Now, not everyone has access to a Functional Medicine Doctor, yet Dr. Roberts encourages that many of us could improve our health simply by “not ignoring

MIZUBA: FROM HILO TO LAKE ERIE 16

M UST SE E | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS

Lake Erie, located between Canada and the United States, is the fourth largest in North America. Though many people tried to swim across it, this didn’t happen until 1975 when Pat Budney became the first person to accomplish it. At that time, open water swimming was

By the time he started college in Pennsylvania, he swam and lifeguarded at the Great Lakes. “Often times I would look from the American side and couldn’t see the Canadian side at all. This made me wonder if anyone could swim across that lake,” he says.

“I TOLD MYSELF TO KEEP GOING ‘ONE STROKE AT A TIME.’” relatively a new thing. People swimming the English Channel and other places couldn’t get the nutrition and training down to meet that goal. They also could not acquire the right equipment or to be fueled along the way. But Budney’s triumph inspired other athletes. One of them being Dr. Eric Mizuba, a Hilo-born chiropractor who in 2012 got in the water with the same goal in mind. Since he was a child, Dr. Mizuba’s father taught him how to swim. “Before my siblings and I were allowed to go out and play, we were required to do laps at the pool. That way, when we were in open water, we were a lot safer,” he says.

As years went by, Dr. Mizuba was approached by several individuals seeking his training. He coached them, swimming alongside them in open water from point to point and mapped out several areas that were safe for exercise. He also provided physical therapy for them at his office. “In fresh water you aren’t as buoyant. It is very cold and there’s a lot more resistance that makes it slower to swim than in salt water,” Dr. Mizuba says. For this reason, he also coordinated a joint effort with kayaking crews to get in the lake together. After training the other swimmers, Dr. Mizuba’s own desire to cross Lake Erie became a personal goal. CONTINUED >

He prepared himself for a year by swimming in the pool between 5 and 10 thousand yards, three times a week. His body and mind needed to be ready and healthy. “These things take time to plan. They can’t be thought of a couple of months before. You also need the proper logistical support: the right people in the right places at the right time,” he shares. On July 29th, 2012, Dr. Mizuba left from Long Point, Ontario to Freeport Beach in Pennsylvania. Every hour or so he threaded water for 3 minutes to recover his energy and continued swimming. He could not touch the kayaks, so he was thrown water bottles and nutrition along the way. Yet, halfway through, a storm came up and all the kayaks traveling by his side capsized. “When I was about 14 miles into the swim and I was feeling a lot of physical pain, I told myself to keep going ‘one stroke at a time,’” he says.

18

M UST SE E | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS

“I WAS FEELING A LOT OF PHYSICAL PAIN.” Without his supporting crew and unable to see what was in front of him, he relied on his studies of the maps and satellite photos of the lake. He used the small islands as points of reference to keep his trajectory, and his goal in mind to stay focused. After 14.5 hours, he completed the 24.3 miles swim, becoming the fourteenth person in history to cross the lake. “It’s like in any goal we set out to accomplish; there’s always going to be adversity. But each step that we take gets us closer to our destination,” he says. Just like Dr. Mizuba, whatever you are doing, keep your eyes on your goal. Whether you must take it one stroke, day, or shift at the time, do not give up. Stay calm in the storm and you will get to the other side. Learn more about Dr. Eric’s work at DrMizuba.com.

IV Vitamin Therapy, Fad or Fab? APPROACHING HEALTH AND WELLNESS AT THE DRIPBAR IN KONA

We all want to be healthy, yet, one size does not fit all when it comes to health. As medical developments advance, we realize that sometimes health issues need to be approached from a different perspective in order to find the results we seek.

IV Vitamin Therapy In 1902, the standard IV use of saline solutions began and was further developed in the 1930s. Just two decades later, it became widely available to the public. Today, healthcare professionals are increasingly using IV treatments outside of hospitals for many purposes, one of them is IV Vitamin Therapy. This treatment delivers micronutrients and hydration directly into the bloodstream for immediate absorption. We require thirteen essential vitamins to survive. Yet, our bodies cannot produce those vitamins, they need to be acquired. When high-dose vitamins are infused through the vein, the cells become flooded with them. It is at the cellular level where these vitamins do their most important work, having a restorative effect that can last as long as the cells are alive. Although oral supplements are a great complement to IV Vitamin Therapy, they are not as effective because the vitamins in oral supplements must pass through the digestive system and liver before the remaining micronutrients can get to the targeted cells. Environmental factors like prescription drugs, antibiotics, and over-the-counter medicines such as Prilosec® can interfere with the digestive system, making it harder for the body to absorb micronutrients.

Boosting cellular health is essential for overall wellness, and IV Micronutrient Therapy can help achieve that by saturating your cells with vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants. Cells have a lifespan that ranges from several days to several months or years. Thus, the intermittent infusion of high-dose water-soluble vitamins can have a lasting effect. Sometimes, especially when someone has issues absorbing vitamins, the intravenous route of administration is the only way to break a negative cycle of unhealthy cell reproduction. Once reestablished, cell reproduction is much easier to maintain. IV Vitamin Therapy can ensure the cells obtain nearly 100% of the nutrients that are provided versus only about 30% of nutrients that might be absorbed through oral supplementation. The Myers Cocktail, invented by Dr. John Myers, has been used since the 1960’s to provide greater levels of health and wellness. Celebrities like Madonna, John Legend, Jane Fonda, and Cindy Crawford have all used IV Vitamin Therapy. The conventional medical approach is to wait for something to happen and then react to the disease state. However, IV Vitamin Therapy gives people the opportunity to proactively address their health at a cellular level to preserve vitality and prevent harm. It is a step forward in the field of advanced health maintenance. So to obtain results you have never seen before, then try something you have never done before. Research IV Vitamin Therapy and consider it. It might be just what you need. For more information, visit TheDRIPBaR.com/Kona.

Whether it is a simple laser removal or a consultation for treatments, the services Many misconceptions come up when thinking about medical aesthetic treatments. offered at Beautiful You can provide a lasting transformation.”

Hidden in the Keauhou Shopping Center, Beautiful You is a full-service medspa owned and operated by Dr. Ileana Sanchez-Anderson and her husband Jerry. They offer a variety of aesthetic options such as microneedling, laser hair removal, and other commonly known procedures. However, what makes Beautiful You unique is its holistic approach to its patients. “Helping people by improving their self-esteem has always been something I enjoyed,” Dr. SanchezAnderson says in an interview. As a family practitioner working in urgent care centers for the past twenty years in Kona, Dr. Sanchez-Anderson always had a passion for helping her patients beyond standard care. Being an aesthetic fellow allowed her the opportunity to pursue helping others by providing care to improve their bodies and their minds. Since opening in June 2023, Beautiful You has helped and consulted with many patients to improve their self-esteem and quality of life through their litany of services and state-of-the-art machines. Acne treatments for mild to severe acne, heat wave treatments to remove fat cells and sculpt muscles, and other quick and effective technologies are available. With their hyperbaric oxygen treatment, patients with arthritis, inflammation, brain injuries, joint pain, migraines, and even Parkinson’s disease have reported less pain, easing of symptoms, and can even help enhance rehabilitation with repeated treatment. To see true change for their patients in all areas of those who come through their doors, Beautiful You and Dr. Sanchez-Anderson do not want to be another surface-level health spa. Dr. Sanchez asserts, “I’m trying to improve my patients’ quality of life and be more productive to help them age gracefully.” Whether it is a simple laser removal or a consultation for treatments, the services offered at Beautiful You can provide a lasting transformation that isn’t just skin deep. EXP E RT H E LP | WEL L NESS

A prevalent mistake I observe among couples is adopting the "expert" role in their partner's life, rather than becoming a supportive teammate or a curious student. While the expert claims to have all the answers, the student adopts a learning posture, seeking understanding through questions. Witnessing our partners in distress can evoke our own feelings of discomfort. We rush to provide solutions not because we deem them incapable but because it's agonizing to see them suffer. The urge to end a loved one's suffering is human. However, the problem arises when our solutions amplify their pain. This approach can inadvertently communicate that we believe our partners can't make sound decisions and they are the cause of their problems. Such interactions can be isolating, leading to feelings of loneliness within the relationship. The challenge? To join our partner's team rather than trying to fix their problems. The best way to empower our partners is by standing with them, connecting deeply, during their challenges. Here's an approach based in years of couples' research from the Gottman Institute. How you respond when your partner presents a problem provides an opportunity to draw you close and doesn't need to end in angry fighting or cold withdrawal. I have used it many times in my office, and I am continually amazed how it reveals the underlying needs. Seek understanding. Connect by asking probing questions like, "How does that make you feel?" or "What does that mean to you?" Pay keen attention to descriptive words they use about their feelings. Use these as a guide for your next question. Validate and empathize. Validation means acknowledging and understanding your partner's perspective.

It doesn’t require agreement. Empathy, on the other hand, is about resonating with your partner's feelings, even if you don't share them. For instance, if your partner fears making new friends after a move, and you’re excited about it due to a new golf club membership, tap into a past memory when you were apprehensive about making friends. Reliving that emotion helps bridge the emotional gap between you two. Assure them of your presence. Communicate that they're not alone and that you're with them, supporting their journey and feelings. Such assurance provides the confidence they need in life's tumultuous times and can give a sense of togetherness. Ask permission to share your perspective. Before offering advice, ask if they'd like to hear your thoughts. Often, understanding and deeply connecting with a partner's feelings can shift our perspective, reinforcing that they are the real experts of their lives. Sometimes we do have really great advice that will benefit them but assuring them we understand their inner world of thoughts and feelings often ends up being the best solution. To simply let our spouse know they are not alone is a strong healing force. In the dance of relationships, it's easy to step on our partner's toes, especially when we're driven by a genuine desire to help. However, true empowerment and connection emerge when we shift from being problem solvers to empathetic listeners. Let's commit to deepening our bonds, seeking understanding, and standing as allies with our partners in every challenge. By doing so, not only do we enrich our healthy relationships, but we also create a haven of trust, mutual respect, and enduring love. This is the key to providing our spouse a safer and more loving existence in this world.

MALAMA CHIROPRACTIC CELEBRATES 40 YEARS OF CARING FOR THE COMMUNITY ARTICLE BY MARGARET KEARNS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY FLETCH PHOTOGRAPHY

“Had I ever considered studying chiropractic medicine instead?” A native of Kailua-Kona, Dr. Jesse Broderson, now in his forties, began his chiropractic journey at the early age of 8. “My brothers and I accompanied our mother to appointments with Dr. Rhody Edwards at his Malama Chiropractic Clinic in Kailua-Kona. When he had a bit of time following Mom’s treatment, he’d give us adjustments – I immediately loved everything about it, the cracking, the clicking and especially how good I felt afterwards,” he says. “Dr. Rhody was a bit of a legend here, everyone admired him. He was a buttoned-up professional in the office, and an avid surfer and tremendous role model for all of us groms (young, inexperienced surfers) at local surf breaks.” Today, Jesse has morphed from devoted patient to owner of the respected clinic founded by Dr. Rhody in 1983. Taking over the reins in 2020, together with his chiropractor wife Dr. Shannon Hogan, the duo

is excited to be carrying on the clinic’s legacy of health and wellness. “Stepping into the practice was a bit of an adjustment for some of Dr. Rhody’s longtime patients who had known me as a kid. Surprise, I’m your doctor now,” he says. But that wasn’t always his plan. He set out to college on the mainland, choosing classes on fitness and health that supported his desire to pursue a career as a personal trainer. “At home on summer break, a visit to Dr. Rhody’s office changed that when he asked me one question: Had I ever considered studying chiropractic medicine instead? It was just the nudge I needed to reverse direction,” Jesse says. Enrolling at Life Chiropractic College West in Hayward six months later, he found his true path as well as a spouse and future business partner, Shannon Hogan. CONTINUED >

“We were literally in every class together during the three-year accelerated program we both had chosen,” Shannon says. “Everything about it just resonated with us – we both embrace a positive, healthy lifestyle focused on maintaining wellness and preventing illness rather than treating disease.” With undergraduate degrees and doctorate hands, the couple headed to Southern California to look for the right opportunity to set up a clinic together. “That was our plan, but we discovered there were no open doors, and nothing was falling into place for us there,” she says. It was time to explore all options, according to Jesse, including the possibility of giving up on Southern California and moving back home to Kona. And, as fortune would have it, the timing was perfect. “I guess that possibility was always in the back of my mind and when I got a call from Dr. Rhody it felt like a blessing – with God’s timing and guidance, he was leading me back to where I needed to be,” Jesse says. Dr. Rhody was retiring, and he knew Jesse would be a great fit to take over the practice here, Shannon says. “What better fit than a talented Kona boy stepping into the role?” Fate or blessing, they sealed the deal. Twenty years later, Jesse says, he is honored to share chiropractic health care and all aspects of living a healthy lifestyle with his hometown community together with the team of wellness professionals he and Shannon have assembled. “We all have the same goal, which is providing safe, effective healthcare that results in lasting relief for our patients. Our clinic offers holistic treatments tailored to each individual’s specific needs, including traditional manual adjustments, low force instrument adjustments, traction and therapeutic modalities such as massage and acupuncture,” Jesse says.

These are all techniques, Shannon says, that heal the body and restore it to its natural fully functioning state. Most recently, the team has added Class II Low Level Laser therapy to their arsenal of healing tools following research on various treatments that offer an alternative to surgery and other invasive therapies. “The FDA recently has cleared laser therapy for the treatment of chronic and acute muscular pain. There is also exciting new research being done on how laser therapy may be effective in treating autistic and Alzheimer patients, as well as those suffering from depression and anxiety,” Jesse says. Using light energy stimulates the body which makes sense since nothing survives without sunlight, according to Jesse. “It’s very cool to offer something like this in addition to more traditional therapies.” A former vice president of the Hawai’i State Chiropractic Association, Jesse continues to work with the group to support and promote the profession he cares so much about. In his free time, he continues to surf, something he plans to do “well into my later years” by taking care of both body and mind. “These bodies of ours take a lot of work, there’s no getting around that and the older we get the more work it takes. Stretching, staying hydrated, taking supplements, eating and living as clean as possible are all important – as well as choosing chiropractic health care, of course,” he says. While he grew up surfing all the wellknown and not so well-known Kona surf breaks, he hesitates to call out any favorites. “Wherever the waves are good, that’s where you’ll find me on any given day.” Malama Chiropractic Clinic, MalamaChiropractic.com, (808) 3297797, 74-5620 Palani Road, suite 102, Kailua-Kona. BIG ISLA ND M I XOL O G Y A dream of reinventing cocktail culture

During Covid we all dove into new hobbies, interests, or jobs to combat the pandemic and improve our mental health. One such person was Gabrielle Maser who took the opportunity to launch her website and online craft cocktail school, KonaCocktailAcademy.com. She can trace her interest back to university when she paid her way through school bartending. Gabrielle studied interior design and started her career specializing in bar design. But she began to realize her true passion was craft cocktails. So rather than continue in an unfulfilling job, she began a journey of discovery from the agave farms of Mexico, researching tequila, to the bourbon distilleries of Kentucky. Her new

passion continued to grow as she learned to tell a story through mixology, crafting each drink with a distinct beginning, middle, and end. Gabrielle thrived on finding the perfect balance of sweet and tart, bitter and sour, and creating exactly the right drink for the customer sitting in front of her. However, as she continued this journey, she realized the knowledge she was gaining was extremely hard to come by. There was no centralized information online or one single book that encapsulated this knowledge. So when 2020 came she decided to fill this gap herself. Kona Cocktail Academy was launched with the purpose of starting with the very basics CONTINUED >

and taking the student through the subtle science of cocktail creation including all the little tips, tricks, and trade secrets she had to travel the world to discover. Then, with restrictions lifting, the world returning to normal, and her academy taking off, something unexpected happened. Cocktail culture was just heating up in Kona, in part thanks to Gabrielle, and she was recruited by local surfer CJ Kanuha to open up a bar concept he had been working on: Aloha Vibes. Though still in its first year, the bar, located in the historic Kona Inn Shopping Center, has already been serving Kona residents faithfully. They pride themselves on their unique twists of old classics, celebrating the flavors of the islands. Just take a look at two of their most popular cocktails, the Pineapple Kona Club, and the Mac Nut Old Fashion. The Pineapple Kona Club is a fun twist on a popular classic from Prohibition, the Clover Club. It’s normally a refreshing combo of gin, simple syrup, raspberry, mint, & lemon; tart but balanced, with a lovely egg white foam. Aloha Vibes’ version is undeniably inspired by our home, using cold-pressed pineapple for the foamy texture and tropical tartness and hibiscus grenadine instead of raspberries for a splash of sweetness and color. Then came switching out the simple syrup for agave and deciding what to do about the gin. As someone who creates cocktail menus on an island in the middle of the ocean, Gabrielle feels she has a responsibility to be as sustainable as possible and also to support local companies in every way she and Aloha Vibes can. So the Kona Club is made with delicious Kupu Gin, produced by Maui Brewing Co., a leader in sustainability solutions. The end result is frothy, tart, and refreshing as well as lovely to look at, and has become Aloha Vibes’ most popular cocktail. Once they had a light citrus cocktail taken care of, it was time to give some attention to the whiskey lovers. Gabrielle wanted to create a cocktail that showed off our unique Big Island flavors with a whiskey base. The Old Fashion, a classic whiskey cocktail, seemed like the most natural place to start so she began developing the Mac Nut Old Fashion. She started by using a fat wash. For those of us not in the know, a fat wash is a technique where you blend fluid (in this case, liquor) with a fatty substance, like CONTINUED >

A bout CJ K anu ha CJ Kanuha is a native Hawaiian professional surfer, born and raised in Kona on the Big Island. Local and international businessman, he is the owner of Ali’i Poke and Aloha Vibes Bar and Grill, and a crafter of artisan wood surfboards. His ideology is to bring everything back to the roots of traditional Hawaiian culture, whether that’s the recipes in his restaurants or the wooden, finless papa he’enalu (traditional surfboard) he sometimes rides. In all areas of his life he endeavors to honor the cultural protocols of the Hawaiian people and show respect in a true demonstration of Aloha.

butter, bacon, or even nuts, and then put it in the freezer to let it separate. Once you scrape the solidified fats off the top of the liquid, you are left with a flavor-infused liquor. Since mac nuts grow here in Hawai’i and are shipped around the world, it was a simple leap for Gabrielle to try it as a fat wash. It worked like a dream. So they blend Four Roses Bourbon at high speed with macadamia nuts and into the freezer it goes. The next day it’s pulled out, scraped off, strained, and then put into a bottle for service. For sustainability purposes, Aloha Vibes then uses the whiskey-infused mac nut pulp for the orgeat syrup in their house Mai Tai. The fat wash gives their Old Fashion a smooth mouthfeel with a hint of mac nut and standard bitters, which is then sweetened with

clove-infused Big Island Honey from OK Farm in Hilo. The final combination is smooth, spicy, and delicious as well as completely unique, showcasing the flavors of the Island in each sip. The Aloha Vibes team continues to develop exciting and innovative cocktails that support small businesses and honor our islands, yet these delicious drinks wouldn’t be available today if Gabrielle Maser hadn’t followed her passion and valued doing something that brings her happiness. Because sometimes being healthy is more than physical well-being but also about finding joy in our lives. Swing by and treat yourself to a cocktail at Aloha Vibes or learn to make your own at KonaCocktailAcademy.com. It could be a great way to gather friends and offer some elevated hospitality!
