LIFESTYLE LETTER

Health, Wellness and Community Please tell me you do this, too. I scroll through Instagram and click SAVE on every healthy recipe I want to try and every wall pilates workout I swear I will do. Let's do a quick scroll through my SAVED posts and see...chocolate chip energy bites, Butternut Squash Mac & Cheese, vegan brownies, BBQ Sweet Potato Chickpea Tacos, Better ME Tori Repa Wall Pilates, Yoga with Adriene. Am I all IN on these? Yes! Absolutely! I mean, not yet...but I will be... once I have time. But when one of my friends calls and says, "Let's go have coffee," I stop everything and have all the time in the world. Want to know why I can always find time to spend with friends, yet somehow never find time to cook or kettlebell? Spending time with friends makes me feel refreshed, alive, healthy, and well. I've never understood feeling connected to my breath, but I do feel connected to my friends and this community. I love this month's issue because it focuses on the connection between health, wellness, and community. My favorite quote from this issue is from Nicole Nester, "I have realized that the more I help women, the more I become a happier, healthier woman. Level up your health and wellness goals this year by creating the mindset to elevate the people around you and work toward building new relationships." My New Year's resolution? I'm going to focus on this. Please tell me you'll do this, too. We are excited about sharing the stories of the people, places, and things in Kirkwood, Webster Groves, Warson Woods, Glendale, and Des Peres. This is our community, and we look forward to building new relationships. Sugar Creek Gardens artist donates a stunning wreath for the Missouri Botanical Garden auction.

The Missouri Botanical Garden has invited Sugar Creek Gardens to once again participate as one of nine florists and garden shops to create and donate a wreath for the Missouri Botanical Garden Annual Holiday Wreath Display and Auction. This year, Sugar Creek Gardens owners Ann and Abby Lapides decided to tap the shoulder of Michael Parrett, artist, retail stylist, and plant ambassador at Sugar Creek Gardens, to design the wreath. For as long as he can remember, Michael has been a creator. He received his BFA from Webster University and his MSF from SIU Edwardsville. Michael is an adjunct art professor at Maryville University, and in addition to working at Sugar Creek Gardens, he runs a multimedia art and fine craft studio, GurkenHAUS. Michael attributes his love of materials, fondness of the natural world and passion for working with his hands to his family's traits passed down from many generations.

KIRKWOOD CITY LIFESTYLE ASKED MICHAEL, "WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION FOR THE WREATH?"

Michael Parrett: This year, the Missouri Botanical Garden's theme for the wreaths was nature and sustainability. I started thinking about how hexagons organically form in nature and tile nicely to form a circle. Creating a hexagon-based wreath seemed not only artistic but also natural. A tessellation is created when a shape is repeated over and over again covering a plane without any gaps or overlaps. Another word for a tessellation is tiling. We naturally associate the honeycomb hexagon shape with bees' cooperation and teamwork.

Community, creation, peace, and balance are just a few of the feelings this geometric wonder evokes, symbolizing peace and unity. Snowflakes, soap bubbles, turtle shells, six-petaled flowers, and dragonfly eyes are examples of coalesced hexagons represented in this wreath. Except for the dragonfly eyes, which I sourced from a taxidermist, everything on this wreath is made from recycled wood, metals, glass, acrylic, salvaged materials, and found objects. The James Webb telescope inspired the inner space of the wreath. 18 gold mirror tiles signify looking back at our history and toward our future. I laser etched a different image representing early religions and cultures on each tile. Hexagons are everywhere - from nature's structures to human-made designs, reflecting our world's widespread use and appreciation of geometric principles. The inherent efficiency, symmetry, and aesthetic appeal of hexagons make them a fascinating subject of study and application in science, art, technology, and religion. A great video on YouTube called "Hexagons are the Bestagons" explains why hexagons are the best shape. The hexagon's hidden significance reaches back to our very beginnings. The Missouri Botanical Garden's Annual Holiday Wreath Display and Auction will be on display in the Jack C. Taylor Visitor Center and online at the Missouri Botanical Garden through January 6, 2024. As of this writing, Michael's Transcendental Tessellations wreath has the highest bid.

As we enter a new year, we are presented with a unique opportunity to prioritize our wellness and personal growth. While we often focus on the traditional resolutions of improving our diets, exercising more, or reducing our screen time, another option can be just as transformative: travel. The power of travel is unparalleled in its ability to break us out of our daily routine, immerse us in new experiences, and provide us with a mental, spiritual, and social reset. Traveling to new places can broaden our horizons and give us a fresh perspective on life. Imagine yourself hiking through the majestic beauty of Banff National Park, taking in the awe-inspiring views of Lake Louise, or feeling the soft pink sand between your toes on the beaches of Barbados. Each of these experiences offers a unique opportunity to connect with the world around us and to connect with ourselves in the process. Whether you choose to travel to a far-off destination or take a simple car trip across a state line, you have the possibility of discovering not just your destination but also yourself. My next adventure is a wine and wellness voyage through Southern Tuscany. I'll be guiding an intimate group trip of no more than 10 people, and we will spend seven days exploring the food hands-on, meeting winemakers, and hearing the stories of the artisans in the area. @adventuresbylydia

"Your body needs time to rest and revive."

Carol Anderson, Owner of Nouveau

This is the time of year when people are talking about health and wellness. As a certified yoga instructor and a former boot camp leader, I recognize the benefits of cardio, weight training, and yoga. But I also know that the relationships we intentionally create are equally important in renewing our energy, strengthening the core of who we are, and stretching to become the best versions of ourselves. My New Year's resolution is to show how transformational building relationships and making connections in the community can be to your mind, body, and spirit.

MIND

I was eleven years old when I lost my mom to cancer. She was thirty-six. During a recent church retreat, I realized I've been searching for my mother my whole life. Along the way, I've met women who have

become touchstones for me. Through that mindful discovery, I've become very intentional about connecting people I meet to these incredible women who inspire me. I feel renewed each time I help make connections for them. I have realized that the more I help women, the more I become a happier, healthier woman. Level up your health and wellness goals this year by creating the mindset to elevate the people around you and work toward building new relationships.

BODY

Between being married to my husband Dan for 33 years and raising our three boys, I understand that women can easily put aside their own health and wellness goals to care for everyone else around them. Your body needs time to rest and revive. One person who can genuinely help with CONTINUED >

that is Carol Anderson, owner of Nouveau Med Spa in Downtown Kirkwood. Carol is one of the women who continue to inspire me with her trustworthiness and authenticity. Her approach to skincare extends beyond the superficial, emphasizing education as she guides her clients through skincare solutions focusing on wholebody health benefits. The fear surrounding med spa services, particularly injectables and fillers, dissipates in her capable hands. The fact that Nouveau doesn't sell memberships or packages at discounted prices speaks to Carol's commitment to transparent pricing and developing relationships based on personalized journeys toward self-care and transformative experiences. You deserve to feel better about yourself, and it's not only possible but essential for health and wellness.

SPIRIT

I am wide open to spirituality within the warm embrace of my church and our community. I strive to live my life in gratitude and gratefulness. I write down what I'm grateful for every day. It doesn't have to be ten things. It can just be one thing. I call it my Blessing List. The one thing we all have in common is our ability to choose to be grateful. I don't know any other way to

live a complete life filled with health and wellness that flows from the inside out.

COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS

The relationships we create in our community have a multi-faceted impact on our health and wellness. A wonderful place to start to build relationships is within your church or community organization. Another perfect place to start a conversation is with a local small business owner. Walking into a store and connecting with the owner, the staff, and the customers releases a level of energy that transcends a traditional workout. I work at Paisley Boutique in Webster Groves, and I can see and feel the positive energy created between our team and our customers. When small business owners like Carol Anderson at Nouveau ask, "How are you today,” they genuinely care about you. I advocate shopping locally because once you build a relationship with a small business owner, I can't imagine going online to buy anything. I am not an Amazon shopper. I can find absolutely everything I need in Webster or Kirkwood. Far from being transactional, local business owners like Carol at Nouveau can transform your health and wellness goals in 2024. Connecting mind, body, and spirit through community relationships is the key.

WHAT Ebenezer Scrooge CAN TEACH US ABOUT Financial Wellness

ARTICLE BY MARK FINKE, MBA, CFP, AIF | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CAREY CAMPBELL

Ah, my dear friends, gather 'round and lend an ear, for I, Ebenezer Scrooge, am here to speak of matters most grave, matters that concern your purses and pockets in the aftermath of the festive season. With the post-holiday bills descending upon you like the relentless visits of three ghostly spirits, your past, present, and future financial state may be less than robust. But fear not, for in the frigid winds of economic discontent, there lies an opportunity for transformation." - Ebenezer Scrooge. As we head into 2024, there is no better time to examine our "Financial Wellness" and see what we can learn from Mr. Scrooge.

PRACTICING THE FUNDAMENTAL ASPECTS OF PERSONAL FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT.

Scrooge was undoubtedly good at counting his schillings, an excellent starting point for financial wellness. Budgeting, debt management, savings, investing, sound financial decision-making, and maintaining a personal balance sheet are all the core activities leading to financial wellness. Don't lose sleep if you don't have Ebenezer's knack for managing money. Advisors can help you sleep soundly with a solid financial foundation. Unfortunately, Ebenezer needed a few middleof-the-night visits to jolt him past the basics.

HAVING A PROPER RELATIONSHIP WITH MONEY. MARK FINKE AND HIS TEAM OF ADVISORS TA L K A B O U T T H E M O N E Y L E S S O N S W E CAN LEARN FROM SCROOGE.

20

M ON E Y M AT T E R S | FI NAN CE + LE GAL SE RVICE S

This is the heart of financial wellness and why many of us would benefit from a Scrooge-like transformation. Our relationship with money is typically formed at a very young age. These "money scripts" (The Financial Wisdom of Ebenezer Scrooge; Klontz, et al., 2006) often come

Jay Peters, Mark Finke, Kraig Rehkemper

from our parents' or grandparents' attitudes towards money. If our parents taught us money created problems, that we should fear running out of money, or that someone is always ready to take our money, then we tend to carry those faulty beliefs into adulthood. If left unaddressed, our internal money scripts often create stress, arguments, or unwanted outcomes. They can become like the heavy chains and lock box that Marley dragged around.

BEING A GOOD STEWARD OF YOUR MONEY.

Scrooge's Christmas morning awakening and change of heart was a welcomed transformation. Scrooge learned that money is the means

to achieve the most important goals we set for ourselves and our loved ones. Scrooge could embrace the spirit of Christmas and alter his present and future by balancing his financial mindset, the relationships in his life, and the joy of sharing his outlook and riches to see good in his world. Do you know why it took three different ghosts to transform Ebenezer Scrooge? Because talking about money is hard. It can be scary. But it can also be transformative. And it can start here. Text "Scrooge" to 314-597-1477 to receive a 2024 Financial Checklist and a short video (no ghosts were used in the making of this video). For more information visit msmf.com

About a year ago, age and weight had caught up with me. I thought, "I cannot feel this uncomfortable this young." Working out was the last thing on my to-do list between the kids, work, and community commitments. But what I discovered, through working with a personal trainer, is that there IS time to focus on health. I started very slowly and had to psych myself up to say, "You are going to do this. You can't keep canceling on this trainer." It's been a journey, but I feel totally different a year later. I talked with Katie Mackenzie, Kirkwood resident and owner of GymGuyz, about creating a designated home workout space. GymGuyz personal trainers bring the workout to your home, whether it's a small space or an elaborate home gym. Here are the blueprints, the tools, and the expert advice from Katie (KM) to get you started on your healthy-at-home work.

YOU DON'T NEED A LOT OF SPACE. BUT IF YOU DO HAVE A DESIGNATED HOME GYM - USE IT.

KM: People just beginning to work out at home don't need much space. Room for a yoga mat and free weights is enough to see results. I have seen many clients with elaborate home gyms outfitted with equipment they never use or don't know how to use. Starting out simple and adding what you need is a great way to build your home gym.

HAVING AN ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER IS ESSENTIAL.

KM: People don't lack places to access home fitness routines. They are lacking motivation. Whether it's an in-home personal trainer, a family member, or a friend, accountability partners are essential for most people's fitness success. However, not all accountability partners are equal because not all motivations are alike. An 80-yearold senior requires a different level of accountability and motivation than a young athlete training for a specific sport. Make sure your personal trainer truly offers personalized accountability for your specific goals.

WORKOUTS DON'T HAVE TO TAKE 60 MINUTES, AND YOU DON'T HAVE TO WAKE UP AT DAWN.

KM: You will benefit from working out 15 to 20 minutes in the morning and maybe another 15 or 20 minutes later in the day. Our personal trainers offer free assessments and optimize a workout plan that allows you to see results that fit within your (ever-changing) schedule. Follow along as I continue on my personal health and wellness transformation - in the middle of transforming 408 Gill @HomeWorkWithTrisha and @408GillAve. Katie and GymGuyz can bring the workout to your home.
