LIFESTYLE LETTER

I'm thankful for you. "If you stand in the meat section at the grocery store long enough, you start to get mad at turkeys. There's turkey ham, turkey bologna, turkey pastrami. Someone needs to tell the turkey, 'Man, just be yourself.'" - Mitch Hedberg. I am most thankful this year for all the people who allow me to be myself and still answer the phone when I call. :) Every day, I am equally inspired and terrified when I think about how best to serve our community with this magazine. I am thankful for everyone who continues to support this publication, day after day, year after year. Thank you for sharing my vision and belief in storytelling's power to connect people and communities. If you know me and the history of Kirkwood City Lifestyle magazine, then you know it all started over a coffee conversation with Tom Murphy, the CEO of Sonus Benefits. He creates solutions for a happy life. That conversation inspired me to start this magazine, and I've never been happier... terrified but happy. So, Tom, this issue is dedicated to you. Thank you for giving me the courage and the guidance by saying, "Man, just be yourself." w ith Tr isha Renovating Olive Chapel AME Church for the next 100 years.

ARTICLE BY TRISHA MCCONKEY PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

I love sharing stories about the homework we are doing at 408 Gill, and I can't wait until it's completed to invite you inside. While our house is currently a work-in-progress, there is another historic house in our Kirkwood that I invite you to step inside. Beneath the steeple that holds a bell that still rings, and between the walls of stained-glass windows, a beautiful, sweet spirit resides inside the historic house of worship on the corner of Harrison and Monroe. When you step inside Olive Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, also known as Olive Chapel AME Church, you step into an essential part of our community's history. Pastor Debbie Thornton is a vibrant conversationalist who welcomes everyone into Olive Chapel, those seeking a faith-based relationship or those just wanting to chat.

Trisha McConkey

"We are not just a church in the community," said Pastor Debbie. "We are a community. We extend and reach out to bring people together. We want to continue to be that beacon of life." Olive Chapel is the oldest Protestant church in Kirkwood and has a history of uniting people of all races, creeds, and colors. "The churches in Kirkwood, both black and white churches, are in fellowship together. We've come this far by faith, and when I look at what we've been through, the challenges we've faced, what kept this church together 170 years ago is what keeps us together today," said Pastor Debbie. The congregation's spirit remains strong, but structurally, this 100-year-old house of worship needs work. "We are raising funds to position this building to be a part of the community for another 120 years," said congregation member Paul Ward. "From the street, people shut their minds because they are reacting to only what they see outside. But the inside is truly beautiful,” said congregation member Wallace Ward. Visit Olive Chapel on the Kirkwood Historical Society's "Building for the Next 100 Years" Home Tour on Saturday, December 2, 1 - 5 pm.

The transformation project at 408 Gill promises to merge the old and the new, and it will be exciting to see the final results. Follow on Facebook and Instagram at @HomeWorkWithTrisha and @408GillAve.

KIM HIBBS, PRESIDENT AND CEO, HIBBS HOMES hibbshomesusa.com

OUR JOB IS TO ENSURE THE HOMES WE BUILD FIT PERFECTLY INTO THE COMMUNITY. That's one of the things I really enjoy about building in Kirkwood, Webster Groves, Glendale, and Des Peres. We want to meet the needs of families but also stay true to the integrity of the beautiful older homes. Several years ago, we were awarded Infill of the Year for a house we built on North Harrison because the client drove the design to seamlessly fit in that historic district.

WE BUILD HIGH-PERFORMANCE HOMES FOR THE NEXT 100 YEARS. When people talk about building a custom home, they mostly talk about exterior and interior finishes. We love to talk about that, but we also want to talk about a durable, low-maintenance, high-efficiency home for the next century. We build homes with a softer footprint, meaning lower heating and cooling bills and more responsibility for stormwater runoff. We built the first Active House in North America. That one-of-a-kind home in Webster Groves supported the development of the green home building standard known as the Active House Alliance standards.

Craftsman Style House from Hibbs Homes

WE NEVER BUILD THE SAME HOUSE TWICE. Our clients determine the project. The owners of this home wanted a craftsman home, so we partnered with John Odem as the architect to match the client's style and vision. We were able to complement the home's exterior to the established neighborhood while incorporating modern features like tall ceilings and an open expanse with big windows between the great room and the kitchen.

WE BUILD FOR TODAY'S MODERN FAMILY.

Jen Fagan's Herring Design and Development custom home

We deliver a home that comfortably allows families to live room to room and floor to floor. The interesting thing about this house is that the family wanted a formal dining room for entertaining. There is something very timeless about that space. The second floor features a secondary office in the corner tower. The finished basement includes an in-law suite and a large theater room. It's important to note that finishing the lower level is much more cost-effective with a new build. We can design that space so that the rest of the house doesn't have to be quite as large. That's one of the tips we help our clients consider when discussing their family's lifestyle. CONTINUED >

MONTE HERRING, OWNER / FOUNDER, OF HERRING DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT Herringdevelopment.com

WE DESIGNED A MODERN HOME TO LOOK HISTORIC. This home is in a historic district, so I aimed for a 1920s design that aligned with how homes looked 100 years ago. The homeowners considered renovating the existing house. However, after looking at the structure, we determined that it was cost-prohibitive to refurbish and achieve homeowners' goals of entertaining their children and grandchildren while aging in place. There is a misnomer that every old house is built well.

UNIQUE DETAILS FIT THIS FAMILY'S LIFESTYLE. Because the home's footprint is smaller, the primary suite is on the second floor. An elevator was installed to ensure the family could live in their home as long as possible. The front of the house faces a busy street, so we built a half-wall for privacy on the front patio. The detached garage is sloped to accommodate the owner's low-profile cars, and a lift in the garage allows all the cars to be housed. While the backyard has a pool, the ground is maintenance-free with turf instead of grass.

PRESERVING THE PAST WHILE BUILDING THE FAMILY'S NEW HOME. The stained glass on the back wall of the garage was preserved from the previous house. The old front door is now the door of the meditation room in the basement. There is also a diamond window that we salvaged and placed in the den at the front of the house.

DETAILS MATTER. I love the living room. We hid all the electronics behind the paneling, and there is an art TV frame to conceal the TV in the living room. The massive fireplace is reminiscent of 1920s design. Upstairs has a lounge area with a second fireplace that offers a quiet retreat at the end of the day. Modern details were thoughtfully incorporated inside and outside the home to align with the homeowner's health and wellness goals. And we can't forget the dog who enjoys thoughtfully appointed pet-friendly details.

JEN FAGAN, HOMEOWNER Moved to Kirkwood from Chicago in 2021

SOMETHING NEW IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD. I love tradition and history, so we wanted to build a home honoring Kirkwood. The house next door is a registered historic house, so we didn’t want to build a house that would look out of place in this neighborhood, but I also wanted our home to have its own character. Monte Herring was great to work with because I didn’t have a vision for this house beyond blending Chicago’s style (my husband is from Chicago) with Kirkwood’s charm. Monte has an eye for details, design, and utilizing space. Our galley kitchen is a feature of older homes, but he modernized it with details like a meal prep area behind the kitchen, finishing the walls with shiplap and brick, and adding gold footing on our island. Studio Lark’s mid-century modern home facing Kirkwood Park.

Jen Fagan's master bathroom designed by Monte Herring

I WANTED OUR HOME TO BE NICE BUT LIVABLE AND DURABLE. I love the cabinets and functionality of the drawers in the kitchen. Monte designed the pantry, refrigerator, and freezer to look hidden. He created three specific areas in the basement for family living with a painted concrete floor, and it’s the best thing ever.

INCLUDING OUR GIRLS. I allowed each of our three girls to work directly with Monte to design their own bathrooms and something special for their rooms. Monte was fantastic about meeting with the girls to pick out their custom features and finishes. Each of their bathrooms is entirely different. Monte also suggested incorporating laundry on the first and second floors to accommodate our family’s lifestyle. My favorite thing he built for the girls is the custom outdoor seating at the kitchen window.

THOUGHTFUL DETAILS THROUGHOUT THE HOUSE. Monte found an old farm that salvages wood. So, he refinished two beams to make matching mantles for the fireplaces. And the lighting is all Monte. He said the lighting is part of our furniture and installed fixtures I never would have thought of. He pulled everything together and took the time to get the details right. He has a great vision, and I would recommend him to anyone.

MAKING A NEW HOME LOOK MIDCENTURY MODERN. Modern and contemporary design in our niche. This house is inspired by mid-century modern homes. Our design really shines in the opportunity for spatial overlap. We don't conceive a house as a collection of rooms. We look for opportunities for all the spaces to be connected.

BUILDING A NEW HOME ON TOP OF AN EXISTING FOUNDATION. Our process is always about aligning the practical goals of our clients with the principles of aesthetics and economy. We do a lot of renovations, so we are inclined to begin with what exists. With this project, we knew what existed was very dated and small. We kept the original foundation and reorganized and rebuilt the house to fit the family's lifestyle while celebrating the green space view of the park in the front and the large private yard in the back. Natural light connects the house's landscape, the open plan concept, and the family spaces.

BUILDING FOR A MULTIGENERATIONAL FAMILY. Our client wanted a five-bedroom house with an in-law suite. This house wasn't just designed for a modern family but for a multi-generational family with spaces for parents and kids to spend extended periods at home. The design allows the family to feel connected even in different areas of the house.

UNIQUE DETAILS ABOUT THIS HOUSE. Aaron is responsible for so many details on the outside of the house. The structural bracing is so elegantly detailed that it feels very architectural. The cable rail on the decking maintains views from the house's interior to the outside space. A pallet of natural exterior materials includes two-tone Shou Sugi Ban (charred natural wood) and thermally treated poplar wood. We celebrate wood over vinyl. Aaron studied the sun's angles and designed the deep overhang on the southern facade. The kids' bathroom is one of my favorite spaces in the whole house. We have a saying at Studio Lark that is borrowed from a past mentor; "Happiness is a yellow wall." In this kids' bathroom, happiness is a yellow shower. You'll just have to tour the house to see for yourself. CONTINUED > NOVEMB ER 2 0 2 3

NICK LIUZZA, OWNER OF NJL CUSTOM HOMES Njlcustomhomes.com

WE DESIGN HOMES TO FIT IN AND STAND OUT. We want the house to stand out but not overpower the other homes on the street. We want the neighborhood to be proud of the home. It's an interesting balancing act. Clients in Kirkwood want an updated version of the look and feel of the traditional historic homes. We worked with architect Tim Hollerbach for this house on Clay. I call the style 'transitional colonial,' meaning the home is mainly masonry with colonial features, but we've updated the exterior with decorative brick and herringbone details.

FAMILIES WANT A FUNCTIONAL AND INVITING HOME. Families want a large kitchen that flows into the rest of the house. People place a lot of emphasis on their children's lives, so we design rooms for arts and crafts, gaming, and recreation. It's a win-win how families live - the kids get their own spaces, and their "creative stuff" stays in those designated rooms. Mudrooms are customized to fit sports equipment, musical instruments, and hobbies. Today's families know everyone gathers in the kitchen, so the main floor is the house's focus. But we take that one step further and incorporate access to outside spaces for additional living areas. This house has two outdoor covered areas and a mechanical pergola that opens

and closes depending on the weather and the sun. The outdoor spaces can be accessed from the great room and the hearth room.

TECHNOLOGY INFRASTRUCTURE IS ESSENTIAL. Homes need to be appropriately fitted to broadcast wifi throughout the house because everyone in the family is always online. It's much easier to install technology in a new home than try to retrofit an older home. Older homes typically need more outlets to support the family's electronics and extra refrigeration to accommodate multiple drink stations throughout the house.

BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE. We build in Kirkwood, Webster Groves, Glendale, Des Peres, Town and Country, and Ladue. Clients often want to renovate an older home. But it's like fitting a square peg in a round hole. Families will end up spending the same amount of money or more and still not get the functionality they need. The family has to make concessions to make the renovation work. Or they can spend less money and get exactly what they want with a custom home. We are as invested in building for new families as we are in maintaining the high-quality standards of families living here for generations. Winter Opera St. Louis Opens The 17th Season of Winter Opera STL begins November 17th at Kirkwood Performing Arts Center. Winter Opera St. Louis takes center stage for its 17th season with three timeless operettas: “Don Giovanni”, “Manon Lescaut,” and “Naughty Marietta.” "We encompass every art form. Beautiful orchestra, amazing singers, stunning costumes, poetry, Italian culture, comedy, and tragedy," said Gina Galati, the General Director of Winter Opera St. Louis. "I don't like to modernize operas. They are beautiful in the way the composer intended. There is something for everyone." The masterpiece “Don Giovanni” composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is inspired by the legendary Don Juan. This comedic tale depicts the reckless journey of a charming and immoral young man who seals his fate. Performances are on November 17th and 19th at the Kirkwood Performing Arts Center.

Winter Opera St. Louis found its home at the Kirkwood Performing Arts Center in 2020. "We love being part of this community. Everyone at this theater appreciates and accepts us," said Gina. Gina recalled the struggles of finding acceptance when she started this nonprofit. "You would think people would want more opportunities for artists in St. Louis, but it was tough. Not every art and music organization welcomed our little opera company," said Gina. "But we stuck with it and were blessed to find people with the same vision and who believed we were making life better for people." She credits her parents as her biggest supporters. "My mom pushed me to do music," recalled Gina. "I performed in musicals growing up but went to SLU on a tennis scholarship as a business major.

In my first semester, I dislocated my shoulder and failed economics. Things were not going well for me at SLU," said Gina. "My mom said, 'Gina, you've always loved music. Go do something you enjoy.' So, I sang for the music department at Washington University and received a recommendation for their music school. That is when everything changed for me. There, I realized opera is where my voice sat well." After obtaining a master's degree in music from Kansas University, Gina started singing with opera groups worldwide. "I traveled for six months out of the year for about 15 years," said Gina. "It was fun initially, but then in 2006, my parents called me from the World Series game, and I knew I wanted to find a way to sing at home." After wrapping up production in Philadelphia of Giuseppe Verdi's

“Rigoletto,” Gina had the idea of replicating that production in a church. She created an opera non-profit, raised $35,000, and held her first fully staged production of “Rigoletto” at St. Ambrose in February 2008. "We were sold out three weeks in advance for two performances," said Gina. "Don't listen to people who say, ‘You can't.’ Don't let people frustrate you," advised Gina, who learned about fundraising while traveling with Washington University’s Chancellor and his fundraising team. “I sang and talked about my experience at the university; how they believed in me and helped develop my talent. I knew if I ever had my own opera company, I would stay true to my mission, treat people nicely, and create a great environment for the artists." While Winter Opera is world renowned, the operation is still quite small with Gina leading a staff of two. “I have big dreams to expand our community offerings with music classes and lessons for kids. Kirkwood is awesome, and we look forward to becoming more of a presence in this community." Winter Opera St. Louis is a musical journey and a testament to the power of passion and perseverance. Gina's dedication to excellence provides an incredible opera experience for enthusiasts and those wanting a wonderful evening of entertainment. Jim Lally (r) at Pedal The Cause

Doing Well By Doing Good Last year, Forbes ranked Enterprise Bank & Trust as the third-best bank in the country. For 35 years, Enterprise has been a pillar in the community, providing excellent advice to businesses and giving back to local organizations. Chairman & CEO Jim Lally talks about the importance of continually connecting with the community and doing well by doing good. “I’m one of 1,150 people, all of whom believe in what we do every day,” said Jim. Kirkwood City Lifestyle sat down with Jim at the Kirkwood Branch at 1052 S. Kirkwood Road to discover the story behind this benevolent bank located in our backyard.

KCL: WHY DOES THE PHRASE “DOING WELL BY DOING GOOD” RESONATE WITH YOU? JL: That phrase delves into our philanthropy and into our pledge to make you better. Our associates are committed to doing the right thing, being fair to our clients and ourselves, and being generous with our time and expertise without expecting anything in return. It comes back in spades. It’s a good creed to live by. We will spend our money here in the community to improve the lives of the residents - whether they are clients or not - because we know that better, smarter people strengthen our community.

EVERY YEAR, ENTERPRISE BANK AND TRUST PUBLISHES A COMMUNITY IMPACT REPORT. WHAT AREAS WILL THE REPORT HIGHLIGHT THIS YEAR? We are consistently committed to three things: housing stability, education, and youth. These are our North Stars. We can’t fix everything, but if we can support those three things well, we can improve people’s lives. We have a business that invests heavily in affordable housing, and we provide access for businesses to open in areas that otherwise wouldn’t be developed. We support organizations that help with job placement and training for people who have gone on the wrong path or need a little direction. We also contribute to youth organizations that provide educational opportunities that set kids up for a lifetime of success. Our Community Impact Report also focuses on our commitment to our internal associate community. We want to ensure that we are improving and creating a diverse organization where everyone has a voice. Our associates have created four business resource groups: The Black Heritage Connection Group, The Asian and Pacific Islander American Group, The Young + Young at Heart, and The Women’s Connection Group. These groups provide associates with a feeling of familiarity and a comfortable place to talk, learn, and ask questions. For example, we can’t fix the childcare problem in this country, but we can provide an avenue for new moms to talk about their struggles and learn from other women. About five years ago, one of our associates started the reverse mentorship program, which created a safe place for people to connect and share their stories. I was the mentee for two African-American women. We talked about what it’s like to be an African-American woman working in our company. They said, “Jim, it’s not perfect, but we see a path to make it better.” Providing a space for everyone to have a voice is something we’ve executed well, and it happens formally and informally.

In 2022, we started the “reCONNECT Series” to create strong and meaningful friendships within a hybrid work environment. We also encourage people to let their co-workers know they are loved and appreciated. We want people to know we care about them, and we want them to succeed. We hold ourselves and our associates accountable, and we want them to understand that they are valued. The impact that this has had on our company culture is that regrettable turnover is very low. Not only are people not leaving the company, but we are growing.

AS ENTERPRISE CONTINUES TO GROW AND INNOVATE, TALK ABOUT THE LEGACY THAT THE BANK IS CREATING IN THE COMMUNITY. Our goal is to make you better. We get out of the office and meet people where they are. It’s purposeful and authentic. We want our clients to know we show up for them. We ask how they are doing and give them tools to achieve their dreams. Issues that are monumental to our clients are things we solve every day. That’s the fun part of our business. The litmus test is whether we are one of the first three calls our clients make on their worst day or their best day. It takes a long time to reach that level. We take pride in building long-term relationships with great trust and loyalty on both sides of the table. We are also celebrating the 20th Anniversary of our signature business training program, Enterprise University. We offer over 30 live virtual courses - at no cost - for anyone, whether they bank with us or not. The classes range from introductory to executive courses for business professionals and leaders at all levels. By the end of this semester, 40,000 people will have attended Enterprise University. What’s remarkable is that not only are C-Suite individuals taking classes taught by real professionals and experts in their field, but we are now seeing companies using Enterprise University classes for the development of their associates. I’m proud that we can provide this level of value to the business community.

“We want

people to know we care about them, and we want them

to succeed.”

Enterprise Bank has connected with the community as an employer and as a community supporter, and we’ve done it well and promise to continue doing that.
