Fall is the season of comfort food; when the crisp weather draws us all home for hearty, warm meals to share with friends and family. I personally love this time of year for that reason, but if you’re like me, and not the best cook, then luckily Kirkland has plenty of options to keep your comfort cravings satisfied.
October is our “Food and Drink” issue and narrowing down content is always the toughest part…. however experiencing the stories as we create them is by far the easiest and most fun. This month, we sat down with the owners of RockCreek, Vivino, and Feast – all amazing Kirkland restaurants! Taylor Robinson (Bellevue Lifestyle publisher) and I also had fun selecting our favorite wineries for this months “Publisher’s Picks” feature on page 34. We had the tough task of visiting the wineries mentioned in this feature – we hope you consider some of our recommendations before you plan your next day of wine tasting!
Also, don’t miss this month’s kitchen design feature on page 16. MN Custom Homes shares their expertise and top tips when designing your dream kitchen. My personal favorite is the comeback of the walk-in kitchen pantry. I know, it may not be the most glamorous thing, but ohh the storage and organization (do I sound like a mom!?).
Hope you all have a wonderful October, and Happy Halloween!

Ideas to transform your kitchen into a functional and stylish space.
ARTICLE BY CAITLIN AGNEW PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDREW WEBB
The kitchen is often considered the heart of the home, a space where family and friends gather, share meals, and create memories. More than just a place for cooking, it’s a hub of activity, connection, and warmth. From morning coffee rituals to holiday feasts, the kitchen hosts moments of togetherness and tradition. Its design reflects the home’s personality, with features that foster both functionality and comfort.
Deciding to renovate your kitchen is a large undertaking and requires intentional planning and attention to detail. Kirkland Lifestyle asked local homebuilder, MN Custom Homes, to share how they approach kitchen design and what trends to pay attention to this year. MN Custom Homes is known for developing extraordinary properties on the Eastside, and they are a leader in innovation, overall design, and functionality.
When designing the kitchen, we incorporate the timeless approach of both form and function, making sure to optimize the flow within the space to create a serene, streamlined environment that is both visually appealing and highly functional for everyday use. Our kitchens are often integrated with living and dining areas, promoting a seamless flow between spaces. This open concept design encourages interaction and makes the kitchen a central gathering point in the home. Our Interior Designers use consistent materials, colors, and design elements to ensure the kitchen complements adjacent spaces, creating a cohesive look.
Current kitchen design trends reflect a blend of modern technology, sustainability, and a return to warmth and natural materials. Some popular trends include embracing earthy tones such as terracotta, sage green, deep blues, and warm browns. These colors bring a sense of calm and connection to nature. Replacing upper cabinets with open shelving is gaining popularity. This trend allows homeowners to display beautiful dishware, plants, or decorative items, creating a more personalized and airy kitchen space. Energy-efficient appliances and water-saving fixtures are a must-have in modern kitchens, aligning with the growing emphasis on sustainability, along with smart appliances, such as touchless faucets, smart ovens, and refrigerators that can help with meal planning and grocery shopping. Another noteworthy trend is the revival of the pantry or larder, especially walk-in styles. These spaces are often designed with custom shelving and storage solutions to maximize functionality and organization.

Kirkland is more than just a place to live for Robb Dibble—it's home for his wife and son, and the community has been at the heart of his journey as both a resident and a professional. As the founder of Dibble Engineers, Inc. (DEI), Robb has devoted his career to enhancing the built environment in Kirkland and the PNW, but his connection to the area runs much deeper than the projects he oversees.
A proud alumni of the University of Washington, Robb graduated in 1994 with a degree that set the foundation for his successful career in structural engineering. During his time at UW, he was also an integral part of the Huskies football team, playing a defensive end and helping support the team to the Rose Bowl in both 1991 and 1992 — a highlight that remains one of his fondest memories!
At Dibble Engineers, Robb has built a reputation for providing personalized, high-quality engineering services. His firm of 20 talented staff are located in a 12.000sqft building located on Market Street with multiple tenants suites.
His company performs commercial, residential, industrial, retail, shoring, litigation support and seismic upgrades throughout the Eastside, Seattle Area and adjacent states. His deep commitment to the local area and dedication to excellence have made him a trusted partner for architects and developers alike.
“Once we started creating that vision of this collaborative environment where we could all learn, grow together, and support our client base, Dibble Engineers has taken off from there.”

Have you visited Kirkland’s RockCreek Seafood & Spirits yet? Situated next to Marina Park, the restaurant opened in April and is helmed by award-winning Executive Chef Eric Donnelly, owner of CircleSpey Restaurant Group. RockCreek features a raw bar, well-curated wine list and cocktails,
fresh seasonal dinner options, and weekend brunch. The cuisine is prepared with a classic French technique and southern ingredients, with a Southeast Asian influence. With a menu of “greatest hits” from years of the RockCreek brand (the Fremont location opened in 2013), seafood lovers are sure to find a favorite, from Chilean Sea Bass to Grecian Branzino and Dungeness Crab.
While the food and drinks are delicious, what really makes the dining experience is hospitality. Donnelly tells Kirkland Lifestyle, “The new location has been great! We’re getting regulars and learning people’s names, as well as continuing to see a lot of new faces.”
As a business owner, Donnelly says, “It’s about growing and developing the people in our company. I have employees who have been with me for 10+ years. I started as a dishwasher when I was a kid, then I wanted to learn to cook,” and his career progressed from there. He strives to create a warm and inviting environment, and staff exemplify the company’s values around hospitality - aiming to become part of the fabric of the Kirkland community.

Inspired by Ernest Hemingway’s travels, and a nod to his novel, A Moveable Feast, Jessi and Chad Waldher created Feast: a French restaurant with a PNW twist. The Waldher’s first Kirkland restaurant, Bottle & Bull, was also inspired by Hemmingway and they loved the idea of continuing with the underlying theme of flavors featured from regions Hemingway often traveled. “We wanted to continue our tradition in Kirkland as a craft cocktail destination, but also feature a more extensive and varied wine list. Chad always had his eye on a certain location in downtown Kirkland. We were both ecstatic when it became available and were able to further expand our operations as we’ve always loved serving our guests here,” says Jessi.
The very definition of the word feast is to ‘eat and drink sumptuously’. In line with that, Jessi and Chad have created something special, something to be savored. “Our highly talented staff bring our menu to life each night along with exceptional hospitality. We’re able to do this because of the lovely people who patronize our businesses. We’re forever grateful to them and our team,” says Jessi.

Vovina is known as a Kirkland staple for handcrafted cocktails, good wine, and local shareable plates. Vovina prides itself in having a unique niche, which is part of its charm and has kept locals coming back again and again over the last 15 years. “We don’t want to be all things to all people. We just want to do what we do very well,” says owner Katy Ballard. Kirkland Lifestyle caught up with Katy to learn more about her journey with Vovina and what she’s looking forward to.
WHAT LED YOU TO OWNING VOVINA?
I was looking for a way to utilize many years of experience in the corporate world in a way that would provide security and independence. I naturally gravitated toward food & beverage because of my experiences learning about wine, focusing on great food, and loving a good cocktail. I took over Vovina when it was struggling to gain a foothold in a rapidly changing downtown in 2015. We’ve won awards and doubled the business since, but our work is never done. In 2018 we planned the next venture, a burger restaurant, which came to fruition when The Slip became available at the end of that year. I was able to create a good position for and rely on the expertise of my Executive Chef, Sara Thoma, who runs the kitchens for both restaurants. Her talents, dedication, and creativity help us with our unique niche in the community.
WHAT BUSINESS ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ASPIRING BUSINESS OWNERS?
Just do it. The only failure is not trying. Do your research, ask others who know more than you for advice, and in the end trust your gut and jump in headfirst. The restaurant business is never boring, and it’s never easy. But it can be very rewarding.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE MOTTO OR QUOTE?
One of my inspirations and mentors passed away unexpectedly recently. She was a great human and a great chef, Tamara Murphy. I’m not a “quote” type of person but she was 63. So I’d say “Life is short”. Hug your loved ones, be nice to your dog, and live your life as best you can because tomorrow isn’t guaranteed.
ANYTHING NEW THAT YOU’RE LOOKING FORWARD TO?
So many things to look forward to! We’re getting back to our essence with the addition of a hands-on General Manager, Milo Mincin, who brings great ideas and a novel approach to Vovina. Milo is improving the space, leaning into our shared plates and special cocktails identity - and creating a stable, positive culture and environment for staff and guests alike. We want to be the local watering hole (a clubhouse if you will) for anyone looking for a cozy, amazing, and intimate night out - whether that’s with a spouse or first date, a group of co-workers, or maybe just you and your dog.
“The only failure is not trying. Do your research, ask others who know more than you for advice, and in the end trust your gut and jump in headfirst.”

This hearty chicken noodle soup is the perfect comfort food that is packed with nutritious goodness. This pairs perfectly with homemade beer bread or a sourdough loaf.
INGREDIENTS:
• 8 cups chicken broth (add more if desired)
• Whole fryer chicken, cut in chunks or shredded
• 5 celery stalks, sliced
• 8 carrots, sliced
• ½ onion diced
• 4 tablespoons butter
• 1 teaspoon italian seasoning
• ¼ cup half and half (optional)
• 1 package egg noodles
• Salt and pepper to taste
DIRECTIONS:
In a large stock pot, add 8 cups of chicken broth. Dice carrots, celery and onion and add to the broth. Bring to a boil, and reduce to medium heat until the vegetables are soft. In the meantime, skin and cube 1 whole fryer chicken and add to the stock pot. Next, add egg noodles (frozen Reames homemade egg noodles are my favorite) and let boil until noodles are cooked. Add butter, half and half, salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning. Simmer on low until ready to serve.
