LIFESTYLE LETTER

The Explore Issue

Summer is nonstop activity in our household.  I think we are making up for all the rainy days cooped up inside and it’s a scramble to squeeze it all in during these few short months. There’s almost an anxiety about it all – or is that just me? I guess that goes to show we have a lot of options here in the PNW to explore during these summer months.

July is our ‘Explore’ issue, and it was fun to put together because I got to actively participate in about 75% of it. Check out page 16 for a few road trip ideas – all of which I had the fun of experiencing. I’ve lived here nearly my entire life and I have never seen anything like Earthlight Villas. The views are truly breath taking and from my understanding these villas book quickly, so act now if you want to visit soon. I also enjoyed driving to these locations testing out the vehicles on page 24. If you’re someone that likes long roads and scenic drives, there are so many fun options to consider these days, including a ton of EV’s if that’s more your thing.

Staying healthy and fit all summer long is also a goal many of us share.  Pure Barre has been a long time favorite of mine (I used to teach years ago!), and I loved catching up with the owner, Katie Wallis, on page 22. She now owns four locations, and she explains the four different class options – there is something for everyone!

Have a wonderful summer, Kirkland! I hope you’re reading along while sitting outside enjoying the sun. CAITLIN AGNEW,

July 2024

The beautiful 50.5-mile long lake provides plenty of opportunity to enjoy water-skiing, jet-skiing, parasailing, kayaking, canoeing, rowing, tubing and cruising.  It’s no wonder Lake Chelan is deemed “boater’s paradise”.  In addition, discover numerous smaller lakes and waterways nearby. Just four miles east lies the Columbia River; a popular spot for windsurfers and sailboats, especially up lake in the Lucerne Basin and near Stehekin, where the winds are the most consistent.

Lake Chelan Valley offers a variety of lodging options, including resorts and condos, family hotels, quaint B&Bs, luxurious homes, and secluded cabins.  There are multiple camping options; whether you prefer the comfort of an RV, the adventure of boating directly into a site or backcountry camping along the upper basin. If you prefer something more upscale, check out the The Lookout; a recent development with classically designed homes and sweeping lake views.

Chelan has distinctive soil and amazing summertime weather which has drawn world-class winemakers who are crafting award-winning vintages. The first production vineyards were planted in 1998 and in 2000, the Kludt Family licensed and bonded the first winery in Chelan County. As of today, you can enjoy 40+ wineries, and choose your ambience - from intimate tasting rooms to estate wineries with restaurants; hip downtown spots or tasting rooms nestled in the hills.

SOUTH KOREA HOLDS SPECIAL MEANING FOR THIS KIRKLAND FAMILY.

Alex Kang and his wife, novelist Jackie Kang ( Flamingo Café comes out October 16), recently made a special trip with their three children and Alex’s mother to South Korea, where Alex spent the first thirteen years of his life.

Grandma wanted to experience Korea with the grandkids for her 80th birthday, and Austin (13), Olivia (11), and Emma (9)  wanted to learn more about where their dad came from. The kids were already fans of K-pop and Korean food.

The family visited Seoul, Daegu, and Busan, in addition to Alex’s former home. While his village is quite rural and not accessible by car, the cities are bustling metropolises. “One thing that surprised Jackie and our kids is that Seoul has ten million people, and there isn’t as much ‘personal space’ as we’re used to. People walk and drive with purpose!” says Alex.

Jackie adds, “Where Alex grew up is a two-hour drive from Daegu, but it feels like a completely different atmosphere.”

“I have seven pictures from my youth that I can look at and see how simple life was. I was surprised how little had changed in that village, though the country of South Korea has changed and developed a lot,” Alex says.

Alex has a large extended family in Korea, and many of them met his and Jackie’s children for the first time during this trip. While the Kang kids speak just a few words of Korean, they still played hide and seek, tag, and rock paper scissors with cousins who spoke little English. The childhood language of play is universal.

Other highlights of the trip include Namsan Seoul Tower, Gyeongbokgung Palace where the family donned traditional Korean hanbok, amusement parks Lotte World (Seoul) and E-World (Daegu), and the fish market in Busson which included blocks of delectable seafood.

DIY Your Way To a Bug-Free Summer

Adult- and Kid-Friendly Natural Bug Repellents from A Beautiful Mess

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY A BEAUTIFUL MESS

Adult Blend Kids Blend

(age 15 and over)

MATERIALS:

• 10 drops lemon essential oil

• 10 drops lemongrass essential oil

• 8 drops lavender essential oil

• 8 drops eucalyptus essential oil

• 1.5 ounces distilled water (minus 1 teaspoon to make room for the essential oils in the bottle)

• .5 ounce 95% proof grain alcohol*

INSTRUCTIONS:

In a 2-ounce spray bottle, add the grain alcohol (or Solubol) and drop in essential oils. Swirl to combine. Place the cap back on the bottle. Allow the oils to disperse in the alcohol for about 1 hour, then add distilled water, swirling again to combine.

MATERIALS:

• 10 drops lemon essential oil

• 10 drops lemongrass essential oil

• 4 drops lavender essential oil

• 1.5 ounces distilled water (minus 1 teaspoon to make room for the essential oils in the bottle)

• .5 ounce 95% proof grain alcohol*

INSTRUCTIONS:

In a 2-ounce spray bottle, add the grain alcohol (or Solubol) and drop in essential oils. Swirl to combine. Place the cap back on the bottle. Allow the oils to disperse in the alcohol for about 1 hour, then add distilled water, swirling again to combine.

*The grain alcohol is used as a preservative as well as a carrier for the oils, but you can also use a product like this instead of grain alcohol at a 1:4 ratio (1 drop essential oil to 4 drops Solubol) if you’d rather and then just fill the rest with water to fill the 2-ounce spray bottle.

While there can be concern about citrus oils on the skin when exposed to sunlight, lemongrass isn’t a photosensitive oil, and if lemon essential oil is steam-distilled rather than cold-pressed (Oui Fresh essential oils are cold-pressed) it can be used on the skin. So just make sure to note which one your lemon oil is and only spray on clothes if you don’t have a skin-safe lemon oil (which is an application method a lot of people prefer anyway if they are more sensitive to oils).
