What’s the most frustrating part about building a home?
For some homeowners, it’s not the investment, the time, or the selections — it’s being left in the dark about all those decisions.
“I’ve met with so many homeowners who are discouraged about the idea of building a home, when it should be an exciting time,” says Stacy Eakman, partner of Alair Kirkland. “We’re on a mission to change the way people feel about residential construction companies.”

Style
Dear Reader,
I hope this letter finds you inspired and full of creative energy.
Today, I want to take a moment to celebrate and explore the fascinating world of style. Style is not limited to the clothes we wear or the accessories in which we adorn ourselves; it encompasses every aspect of our lives. From the way we decorate our homes to the music we listen to, from the books we read to the way we carry ourselves in conversation, style permeates every facet of our existence. It is one of the threads that is woven together to make the tapestry that is "us."
Style is deeply personal. And it evolves as we celebrate our quirks, our passions, and our desires. Style is a form of self-expression that communicates who we are, how we perceive the world and what we value. In this way, style becomes a powerful tool for connection, as it enables us to find common ground with others who share our aesthetic sensibilities.
As individuals, we have the freedom to embrace established styles, blend them together, or forge entirely new paths, becoming trendsetters ourselves. We hope this issue inspires you to take your own style path. There is so much here in Kirkland to uplift our spirits, drive our inspiration and ignite the creativity within each of us.
What I’ve found is that the best style is an authentic expression of who you are at heart. And that’s something no one on earth can duplicate.

Fall into Bed
Our bedroom often falls down the list of decor priorities, but September is a great time to hit the reset button on your primary’s design and reinvent the most important sanctuary within our home.
During 2023, design has played with sensual curves and soft, layered textures: think rounded headboards, cushions or pendants and sumptuous rugs. Minimalism is always paramount when styling a bedroom: reduce the number of cables, trinkets and books. TVs should make a swift exit and device charging stations can double up as a statement decor piece - I love Courant’s linen charging tray.
Minimalism does not always mean clean lines and crisp linensin 2023 it’s about allowing fine opulence while reducing clutter. So go and buy that statement headboard or fun wallpaper. Layer your bed with beautiful textures (I love Parachute’s cloud linen range and layered throws), invest in pretty curtain hangings to soften the space and filter natural light. I am seeing a lot more meditation cushions sitting at the foot of the bed (Mala Collective has a beautiful range) as well as green plants that both ground and oxygenate indoor spaces; think Ficuses, Monsteras and Philodendrons. Finally, do spend time researching the best pillows, mattresses and toppers - when you finally fall into bed at the end of the day, you want it to be a luxurious, supportive experience. Sweet dreams!

Michelle Tsau, Eastside resident and Founder of Avant Gardist, is an intrepid leisure traveler. Born and raised in Hong Kong until the age of 14, when she moved to the US, her forays into Japan, Romania, Taiwan, and more have led her to encounter many unique independent designers across the globe. Her “curious quest to discover undiscovered treasure,” motivated her to start the company in 2019 as a fashion e-commerce platform - a hub for sourcing distinctive, unconventional fashions not found at the usual shopping meccas.

When abroad, Tsau scours fashion districts for independent designers, and engages when she finds them to determine if they’re on the same page with regard to values and vision. Her ethos around sustainable and ethical design and production is an important factor in choosing partners. She looks for opportunities to highlight little-known designers, like serving on the panel for the 2022 Futures Initiative from the Smithsonian Museum to celebrate its 175th anniversary. Avant Gardist invited three of its designers; Vincent Li, Phenotypsetter and Yasuyuki Ishii; to showcase their futuristic designs at the event.
For Tsau, the best part of the job is finding new talents and being the first to shine a spotlight on independent designers.
“Avant Gardist is about bringing the sense of discovery back into fashion, and democratizing fashion,” she says. An Avant Gardist pop-up shop is planned for Seattle in mid-September. You can find more information on avantgardist.com where you can sign up for the newsletter, and follow along on Instagram @avantgardistinc as well.

THE ART OF FABRIC DESIGN
Recently I had the opportunity to tour Tommy Bahama’s design studios in Seattle with Bradley O’Brien - the EVP of Product Design and Development - to learn about how art becomes part of the brand’s iconic fabric designs. The light and airy design workspace feels lush - as well-tended houseplants punctuate every unused surface. “Nobody has an art department like this,” says O’Brien. Artists are tinkering with designs at various tables using paint, ink, or computer, and one can see the tropical designs come alive.
Each season sees the brand’s design and development team select a destination to embody that season’s product line. Ibiza, Capri, Uruguay, and the South of France are all past selections, and it’s easy to see the influence of these locales on past releases that adorn the walls. In-house fine and graphic artists draw inspiration from textiles collected abroad, flora, fauna, global art, and the jam-packed Tommy Bahama archives: garments, and fabric samples from seasons past.
ARTIST’S PALETTE | ARTS + CULTURE

Often the brand will work directly with outside artists, like Alexandra Penney, Beppe Spadacini (the “king of the tropicals,” O’Brien tells me), and Justin W. Cox who created the stylized marlin adorning several of this year’s pieces. Cox has worked with fashion brands before - his parents owned a retail store and he grew up in that world. He developed his artistic talent by trying different methods, “messing around with paint, looking for an outlet,” he says. He took to acrylic paint because he
can create pieces quickly, and the colors smear together in a desirable way.
After honing his skills, Cox posted some of his work on social media and people responded positively. He’d previously worked with Tommy Bahama’s SVP of Men’s Design, Dawn Brandl in the ‘90’s, and the two reconnected virtually which led to the brand partnership. “Tommy Bahama’s quality and attention to detail are incredible,” Cox says. “They took my work and helped it come to life.”

Creating Everyday Heirlooms
ARTICLE BY BREE O’BRIEN PHOTOGRAPHY BY BETHANY MARIE AND HANNAH ASPEN
T. Anthony Jewelers has been in Carillon Point since 2020. It was the peak of the pandemic when Tyler and Kellie Sholdt moved their business from Seattle to Kirkland, so they opened up quietly and have remained somewhat of a hidden gem. Since then, Kirkland locals, Woodmark Hotel guests, and longtime clients have enjoyed spending time in the artful and welcoming jewelry studio with a lake view.
With a focus on custom pieces - particularly bridal - Tyler serves as the Principal Designer while Kellie manages marketing and operations. Tyler’s family has been in the jewelry business since 1935, so he grew up learning the trade. When Tyler struck out on his own in 2008, T. Anthony Jewelers was an appointment-only custom shop on the 14th floor of a Seattle high-rise, so he and Kellie
have been enjoying the experience of a retail storefront where customers new and old can just walk in. A fun trend the pair has noticed among younger customers is that they’re “self purchasing” fine jewelry to mark their special occasions, or even just for fun. They don’t feel they have to wait for a partner or other family member to gift them high quality jewelry.
When a client wishes to commission a bespoke piece of jewelry, they generally come with some style inspirations, preferences for types of metal and stone, and a budget. “It’s a partnership,” Tyler says. He has 25 years of relationships with vendors, so he’s able to borrow a small selection of stones to present to a client for consideration in their design. Tyler creates the designs in a CAD (computer aided design) program, then clients

can review them from every angle. The ability to send images electronically means T. Anthony can work with anyone, anywhere. Kellie says, “Tyler really is an artist, so people love the look of his designs and want to collaborate with him.” After a client approves the design, U.S.-based bench jewelers bring it to life; casting the design in the chosen metal, setting the stones, and finishing each detail to perfection.
One recent challenging commission that Tyler worked on was that of a client who wanted to create a diamond tennis necklace to celebrate a 50th birthday, and specified the necklace should contain exactly 50 carats of stones, and be exactly 18” long. Figuring out the perfect design was a feat of architecture and engineering, and the client was thrilled with the result.
Quality is top of mind for Tyler, and he is stringent in ensuring that a ring, necklace, bracelet, or earrings are not just beautiful, but have the structural integrity to stand the test of time. Sometimes clients purchase diamond studs or a solitaire ring, and come back at significant milestones to upgrade the diamonds. T. Anthony Jewelers will take back the original stone at the price paid by the client, and apply that to a new, larger stone for the setting.
Tyler and Kellie love working directly with clients, who are typically commemorating happy moments and want their jewelry to feel special and personal. The couple uses the term “everyday heirlooms” to describe stunning fine jewelry that is eminently wearable. “This is one of the happiest businesses,” says Tyler, “People are marking special moments and we get to be a part of that. I can’t imagine doing anything else.”

Dining in Style
Arleana’s has outstanding food, and decor to write home about.
ARTICLE BY BEN TODA AND ALEXANDRA FORIN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KAT YOUNG DESIGNS
Owner Theo Martin named the restaurant in honor of his mother Arleana, and wanted the space to convey her warmth and love of good food, community, and family. The design that we developed from these feelings is a restaurant that is modern and inviting, playful, and soulful. Theo’s personality and flair for life also come through in the design. Rich colors, geometric textures, tactile materials, and lush plants flow throughout the restaurant. The material palette and lighting are simple and clean, with attention to detail, color and composition.
A curved wood ceiling, accent lighting, tile mosaic and plush barstools dramatize the bar. An open kitchen connects guests to the food and invites them to be a part of the family. Two murals by local artists enliven the dining room and kitchen. The restaurant has a calm warmth that immerses guests in a rich and relaxing atmosphere.
Ben Toda and Alexandra Forin of Freehand Studio are both the Architects and Interior Designers of Arleana’s Restaurant.

Fashion that Gives Back
Purpose
TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT PURPOSE IN KIRKLAND
Purpose was founded in 2013 in our owner Christie’s living room. She had a dream of combining her love for style with a desire to do good - so she started bringing friends into her home and styling them. Ten years later, we still follow this model of building genuine relationships with every person who walks into our stores and personalizing the styling experience for each. Christie quickly moved into a storefront in Bremerton, then within a year expanded to Downtown Kirkland. Since then, we’ve opened three more women’s stores including The Village at Totem Lake. Our clothing ranges from young contemporary and approachable plays on the latest trends, to high quality basics and staple pieces.
SHARE ABOUT HOW PURPOSE AND THE BRANDS IT SELLS “GIVES BACK”
The name Purpose is twofold; We give a portion of every sale to Atlas Free, an anti-trafficking organization based in Kirkland (over $300,000 to date.) Atlas Free is doing incredible work locally and globally through local partners in each country where they’re operating, providing safehouses and aftercare that people desperately need coming out of trafficking. We also carry several brands that are handcrafted by survivors of trafficking or extreme poverty, or give back another way. However, the impact we make in the dressing room every day is just as important to us. Our number one core value as a business is “Everyone and Everything Matters.”
WHY IS GIVING BACK SO IMPORTANT TO PURPOSE?
Our regular monthly giving to AtlasFree is the cherry on top! Generosity is one of Christie’s personal core values, so it’s just something we do. So many people feel strongly about trafficking and social injustice, it’s an honor to provide a channel of giving for our communities through something we’re all doing anyway, shopping for clothes.

TELL US ABOUT PENDLETON IN KIRKLAND
The Pendleton store at The Village at Totem Lake opened in the fall of 2021. Products offered range from iconic menswear, womenswear, and accessories to the famed woven-in-the-Northwest wool blankets. Pendleton is a heritage lifestyle brand founded in 1863 and located in Portland, Oregon. With six generations of family ownership, Pendleton is focused on creating quality lifestyle products with timeless styling.
SHARE ABOUT HOW PENDLETON “GIVES BACK”
Since 2006, Pendleton and our partners have contributed more than $1.5 million to support the National Parks Foundation, the official charitable partner of the National Park Service, to help preserve, protect and promote America’s most treasured places. The Pendleton National Park collection is a curated selection of lifestyle products including blankets, apparel, accessories and pet products. Each of the park stripes were designed with the parks in mind, using colors inspired by the flora and fauna of the unique locations.
Pendleton’s contributions to the National Park Foundation have supported two landmark projects, including the restoration of the double helix staircase at the Many Glacier Hotel in Glacier National Park and preservation of the historic Grand Canyon Train Depot in Grand Canyon National Park. The next project to benefit from the Collection’s contributions will be Desert View located in Grand Canyon National Park.
WHY IS GIVING BACK IN THIS WAY SO IMPORTANT TO PENDLETON?
Pendleton recognizes the importance of being a part of a larger community and giving back in ways that are meaningful to that community. All of our philanthropic efforts are rooted in growing the community through education, preservation, and wellness. A few other key philanthropies: American Indian College Fund, Fisher House Foundation, Wildland Firefighter Foundation, Native American Rehabilitation Association (NARA).

EVEREVE
TELL US ABOUT EVEREVE IN KIRKLAND
Our Kirkland store in The Village at Totem Lake opened in August of 2020, our fourth store in the Seattle area. EVEREVE was founded on the belief that inspiring women to move forward in fashion can play an important role in helping them grow and flourish in life. We carry contemporary women’s clothing that we curate thoughtfully each season. The stylists that work in our stores are experts and make it easy to find the right pieces.
SHARE ABOUT HOW EVEREVE GIVES BACK
We host both private 15% off parties in our stores as well as private “fashion fundraisers” that give back 15% of the party proceeds to nonprofits. We raise thousands of dollars each year for schools and other organizations in our community. Our store employees are experienced
at helping the hostess of each fashion fundraiser feel supported - she invites her network to attend the fundraiser, we do the rest! These events are held for one entire business day and culminate with a party at the end when the hostess’s network shows up to enjoy light bites, some wine and help finding the perfect outfits.

FINDING A TOUCH OF GLAM IN EVERYDAY DESIGN
ARTICLE BY ALLISON GIBESON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
DECOR TRENDS | HOME + DESIGN 44
Tamara Day, star of HGTV’s Bargain Mansions, describes her style as “laid-back luxe.”
“I am a mom of four, and I like pretty, shiny things,” Tamara says. “The two don’t always mix well. I design with lifestyle and family in mind but with that touch of glam.”
This mixture of practicality and flare can be accomplished throughout the home on a budget, Tamara says.
When it comes to the kitchen, she says replacing the backsplash is one of the most cost-effective ways to refresh the room. Additionally, she says paint is the most inexpensive option to update cabinets, and there is a de-glosser on the market that will reduce the labor involved by helping paint adhere to cabinets.
“You can get a whole new kitchen with some fresh paint,” Tamara says.
In the bathroom, Tamara suggests putting up new light fixtures and wallpaper for a fresh look. She suggests using wallpaper on just one wall to create contrast.
“Wallpaper transforms everything and puts in a hominess factor,” Tamara says.
To give a new feel to the living room, Tamara suggests using decorative pillows as well as displaying design books and layering with a candle or other interesting object to create a sentimental focal point. She also suggests investing in good, quality sofas

and rugs because less expensive options will not typically withstand the amount of wear and tear they receive from a family.
Overall, Tamara says there is a balance between mixing expensive and inexpensive items and materials around the home, all without having it looking cluttered. She says every space needs something that is thrifted.
Tamara finds many people enjoy elements of different types of styles and have a hard time defining their personal style. To help narrow down to a preferred look, she suggests taking a hundred room images and sorting them into piles of likes and dislikes. She says when someone completes this exercise, they typically find a theme to their preferences.
MAKING COLOR, TEXTURE AND PATTERN STAND OUT
Tamara has a natural eye for using great colors and textures in design. What is her approach to making a room look great?
HERE ARE TAMARA’S TOP TIPS: Find a base color with pops of other colors.
“Every room needs a touch of black and a pop of color,” Tamara says. “The black will anchor it, but the color will give it life.”
If the home is urban, she suggests more bold pops. If it is a traditional home, use a mixture of colors. Additionally, she suggests using one basic color throughout a home with pops of other colors as opposed to having a different color in each room.
Consider wallpaper.
“Wallpaper can be scary for a lot of people, but there are so may wallpapers out there that are removable,” Tamara says.
Tamara says wallpaper adds texture and warmth, and she includes it in most of the homes she designs.
Layer with baskets, blankets and greenery. All three make a room feel cozy and add color and interest to a space.
