The IssueStyle
September is known as the fashion and style issue in the magazine world, and we are thrilled to participate in the trend. While the Pacific Northwest might be more known for Patagonia, REI, and Crocs, the local designers we feature this month rival that stereotype with their couture, high fashion designs. The pieces these designers have created are truly works of art, and I admire the passion behind their work, and their drive to share their work with the world. Styles are ever changing, and the fashion world continuously brings us a fresh new take on something from generations past or shares an entirely new concept for us to enjoy. I believe that everyone has style, some are just more skilled at expressing it than others. Fashion is a way to connect and even communicate our creativity. And not necessarily just through clothes, but by the music we listen to, interiors we decorate with, how we wear our hair, etc. As you flip through these pages, we hope to inspire you into new ways of sharing your own style.

What are you working on for 2023?
It’s such a wonderful process. I make sure I take my time to really make my designs unique and functional as well as cohesive. What inspires you? I am, and always have been, inspired by women around me. Every year my discovery of women power is evolving. I find them more complex, with so many layers. Best design advice you’ve received? Don’t compromise your creative designs but do learn how to make them easy for production. What advice can you give to aspiring designers? You are born to be a designer - nobody can’t make you one. And if it’s a passion, don’t give up. There will be time when you will need to pause for reflection or for change; take it. But come back to it with passion. It’s your voice, your story, share it!
I am creating a new bag design as well as introducing my project of lifestyle coaching where fashion meets fitness and beyond. I want people to experience fitness, health, and fash ion like never before with my lifestyle services customized especially through my brands: Mensahna, K2tStyle and Kate S. Mensah. Describe the design style of your previous collection. My previous collections were about lux ury apparel and accessories that give strong women the ability to express their bold personal style in their everyday life, without sacrificing functionality and practicality. I incorporated a lot of asymmetrical shapes with unique textures.
What’s been your biggest challenge as a designer? My biggest challenge has been to correctly price my designs. I wasn’t including all the costs that should be included in my designs. What part of the design process do you enjoy most? The creative part! I enjoy the develop ment process -from sketching to prototype.
“There will be time when you will need to pause for reflection or for change; take it. But come back to it with passion. It’s your voice, your story, share it!”

A s we approach retirement and our next life chapter, we wanted to improve our health so we can continue doing the things we love—being active, spending quality time with family (especially grandchildren!) and traveling. During the pandemic, our weight slowly crept up. We both decided we needed to be serious about losing weight and getting healthy or we’d have some serious health consequences before too long. Our experience with 20/20 LifeStyles has been incredible! We loved working one-on-one with all the experts. Working so closely with our personal trainers and our dietitian was probably the most valuable part for us. It helped us adapt our nutrition and greatly improve our fitness. We enjoyed learning healthy, new recipes and are also experimenting with smoking lean meats and using new spices. It’s become a fun, new hobby! We got access to a lot of incredible tools as part of 20/20. The overview videos from (20/20 founder) Dr. Dedomenico were great. They helped explain the basic science around weight management. We also really appreciated the nutrition videos for each stage. As empty-nesters, we had the benefit of doing the program together (which we HIGHLY recommend). The biggest benefit of 20/20 LifeStyles has been in how we feel and the improvements in our bodies. We’ve each lost over 50 pounds and are down several clothing sizes. it’s made a huge difference in simple things like going on a hike and climbing stairs without being out of breath. Also, the improvement in our lab results has been wonderful. Neither of us is pre-diabetic anymore; we’ve lowered our cholesterol, and we both have great blood pressure. We’ve also loved watching our body fat percentage going down with periodic DEXA scans. We’re so glad we made the decision to be part of 20/20. In just a few months, it’s helped us become healthier and fitter than we’ve ever been. We’re excited about entering this stage of our lives at our fittest and healthiest. to a private consulation. PAST INDEPENDENT DESIGNER RUNWAY SHOW PARTICIPANTS SHARE WHAT THEY’VE BEEN UP TO.
Photography By Lauren Segal
Fashion Week at The Bellevue Collection attracts the region’s fashion-forward and luxury shoppers. The annual event includes exclusive runway shows, fall trend reports, beauty demonstrations, and stylish parties. In years past, a favorite attraction for many included the Independent Designer Runway Show, where local designers were given the opportunity to present in a professionally produced runway show. Participating designers applied and were selected based on outstanding fashion sense and dynamic collections. It’s been a couple years since The Bellevue Collection curated an Independent Designer Runway Show, so Kirkland Lifestyle caught up with a few past participants to find out: Where are they now?

Bringing a heightened point of view and elevated per spective, Rickie De Sole is Nordstrom’s latest power hire for their newly created role: Women’s Designer Fashion & Editorial Director. Nordstrom has always appealed to the modern luxury customer, but they’ve been upping the ante by adding covetable new names in luxury to its offering, supporting CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalists, and continuing its Nordstrom Space concept which serves as a satellite retail partner to Dover Street Market Paris. With previous experience from fashion power houses such as Vogue Magazine, W Magazine, and Prada – De Sole has a unique perspec tive on modern fashion and knows what speaks to the luxury customer.
2. VALENTINO – No one does color like Pierpaolo Piccoli at Valentino. This fall, it’s all about pink.
1. BOTTEGA VENETA – The New, New Bottega! I am very excited for the arrival of Matthew Blazy as creative director at Bottega Veneta. His debut collection hits stores this fall and it’s a brilliant take on twisted minimalism; classic wardrobe staples reinvented for the modern era.
3. COURREGES – Playing with experimen tal shapes and shiny vinyl fabrics, designer Nicolas de Felice has brought the space age to the modern age at Courreges. It’s the go to brand for the in the know Paris crowd and we are loving it.
4. PIFERI – This fall, we are thrilled to be launching sustainable footwear brand Piferi at Nordstrom. A former Jimmy Choo alum, the brand founder Alfredo Piferi, designs beautiful sculptural heels that are made from 100% vegan leathers.
