Luxurious Landscaping Before listing a home it is crucial to spruce up curb appeal. Simple things like creating serene garden spaces, adding fresh bark, watering grass, pressure washing, cleaning up an old shed and adding fresh paint can really set a nice mood for outdoor entertaining and relaxing. The Women’s Issue
AD DESIGNER
Our May issue is dedicated to celebrating the women who have made their mark in our community in one way or another. Regardless of age and background, these leaders embody boldness, creativity, generosity – all while being compassionate and kind. Working with all of them on this issue was inspiring to our whole team! In a world that thrives on competition, let’s take time to encourage each other, appreciate the beauty in everyone and lift each other up, perhaps even a stranger. I also encourage you to take time to reflect on the inspirational women in your own life and reach out to them to thank them for their impact on your life. This month is also Mother’s Day, and a special one for me as it’s my first Mother’s Day after giving birth to my baby girl. But having celebrated Mother’s Day in years prior, I know the day is not just about being a biological mother –there are mothers who have adopted children, grandmothers, stepmothers, aunties, dog moms, and more. We hope this month you take time celebrate the women in your life!

Spring Planting Guide:
Refreshing your Planters I had the pleasure of interviewing long-time friend and local horticulturist, Dana Nunnelly, on best practices to consider when refreshing your containers.
Do you recommend updating your planters seasonally?
Photography courtesy of Dana Nunnelly
Yes, definitely – that’s the fun of containers! At a minimum, I like to create spring and fall refreshes for my clients, but in an ideal world, you would aim to make three seasonal changes. These would include a more autumnal color scheme, (think orange and gold), before switching to red tones after Hallow’een and Thanksgiving that would carry your seasonal design through Valentine’s Day into spring.
What’s your creative approach when designing planters? There is a time-tested trick when designing containers. Think: “Thriller - Filler – Spiller.” The Thriller is the plant placed in the center

from small conifers or maples, to Camellias for fall and winter; and
Camellia Sasanquas are one of my favorite go-tos as they bloom in the winter adding a burst of color.
One of my main conundrums is how to ensure proper drainage in my planters. Do you have any top tips for that? Check your soil first, as it can get compacted and should be refreshed. I always use an organic potting soil. Plants need soil that is approximately 50% minerals and organic matter, 25% water and 25% air - it’s the air that really helps with proper drainage. Potting soil usually has enough perlite in it to create enough air flow. If you’re using fresh organic potting soil and you’re still experiencing drainage issues, you can buy extra perlite and mix that into the soil, for optimal drainage.

What inspired you to start a flower shop? When I asked my mom if she knew I’d ever open a flower shop she said, “when you were little, anywhere we would go, you’d come back and bring me a bouquet of flowers or weeds.” So I’m guessing it was always there. As soon as I started working with flowers, I realized how beautiful each one is, how unique and special, which taught me to see so much beauty and uniqueness in people, situations and places. As far as what inspired me, I’ve always been an entrepreneur and dreamed of opening a few businesses. I officially opened an online, out-of-garage business as a florist about five years ago, and the time came to open a storefront as a flower shop. I didn’t want Fleur studio to only be mine though, which is why I added studio. I wanted it to be a place for creativity to flow out of, not just from flowers, but from photographers, events, coordinators, other florists, artists, painters, and so on.
to baskets. Individuals will learn how to create a color scheme and correctly fill a vase with flowers, the process and steps to make an arrangement, and different tips and tricks for how to open the flowers up to look fuller and to help them live longer.
Tell me about your workshops, what can you teach someone who doesn’t know anything about floral arrangements? I am so excited to start hosting seasonal workshop and workshops curated for Mothers and Father’s Days. In these classes I chose to do different styles of arrangements: from hand held, to wrapped, to vases, to boxes,
Any new plans for the studio in the near future? So many plans, but I am taking this a day at a time. For now, the nearest plan would be to have summer markets with a Pike Place feel, and live music sessions – I want to host Saturday evening live music and welcome Seattle artists to perform at the studio.
NOW OP E N | SHOPPIN G
How would you describe the style of the floral arrangements you create? I would describe my style as European inspired. I was born in Belarus and a lot of my fashion, interior design and floral design is inspired by the city of Moscow, and Russian and European culture. I also love architecture and am always inspired by buildings and structures, so I try to apply architecture to my floral arrangements. Making one flower taller than the others, or making them look like they would if they were growing out of the ground. Nature, flowers and plants have their own flow to them, and I try to capture that flow in my arrangements.

“Slow down a little. Take time to reflect and plan. Take risks that may lead to mistakes, and then learn from those
Dear Younger Self: First of all, this is a thank you letter: thank you for being you, the person who has become me! Along the way I’ve learned many things that I wish I knew when I was your age — too many to count. So the first thing I want to tell you is: slow down a little. Take time to reflect and plan. Take risks that may lead to mistakes, and then learn from those mistakes. One mistake I always used to make was comparing myself with people: beautiful women in magazines, people who seemed successful and perfect… It took me a long time to learn that those people are more than the image that they show you. They struggle, too. You don’t need to be like the person you think they are — you need to be you. And when you’re you, the truest you, then you are able to tell your story. There’s an authentic story in your heart, and even though only you can tell it, it will resonate with other hearts, and help them grow. That’s what people want: underneath all of the beauty and money and social status, people want their hearts to resonate with others, and to grow. That’s why your story is the key to your success. Love, Lee

THESE LEADERS INSPIRE A SENSE OF SHARED RESPONSIBILITY TO MEET NEEDS WITHIN OUR COMMUNITY ARTICLE BY BREE O'BRIEN AND HEIJA NUNN | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF THE INTERVIEWEES
A Memphis native, Dr. Cushinberry has called the Pacific Northwest home since she was named CEO of HopeLink in the spring of 2021. She has 25 years of experience in the non-profit sector. How did you first become involved in non-profit management? While I was in college, an acquaintance working in my home church wanted to start a summer camp program for inner city youth and tapped me to manage it. What inspires you to do this kind of work? Growing up, my family and I benefitted from non-profit programs like HopeLink until my mother became the first in our family to graduate from college. I strive to be a competitive leader, leading from a place of passion. How does HopeLink serve its clients? We work with hundreds of organizations across the North End and the Eastside on issues like providing food and transportation options to those in need, stabilizing families and helping them exit poverty, energy and rental assistance, and education. Across all of our programming, what matters most is serving our clients with dignity and seeing their humanity. What changed for HopeLink over the course of the pandemic? Need increased, particularly with regard to food insecurity, and assistance with energy and rent. Pre-boxed food was put together at our facility in Kirkland and shipped out to other locations to meet the need. We saw government support increase as well as support from the community, which was heartening.

Samantha St. John
Samantha served on the board of Attain Housing for five years (until 2021), including a stint as Board President. Kirkland born and raised, Samantha has had a varied career including retail and restaurant management and a tech startup before joining the Greater Kirkland Chamber of Commerce in 2013, becoming CEO in 2017. What inspires you to give back in the way that you do? While I was on the board of Attain Housing, I saw the human impacts of the housing crisis up close. I was very passionate about the Stable Home eviction prevention program. While band-aid solutions are needed, I like to put my energy toward solving problems by addressing the root cause.
What challenges in the Kirkland area does the Chamber make a priority? Housing is a big one – particularly workforce housing affordability. The Chamber pursues market-based solutions to tackle the housing shortage. Transportation is another one, like how to improve the gridlock on 405. We also partner with the LWSD College and Career Readiness program where we can evaluate community needs and how to serve them so kids have what they need to achieve future success. What do you enjoy about working for the Chamber? As I’ve worked here for several years, it’s been really fun to see this Chamber grow and change and join the digital age. The Chamber is more than just a business organization, we really have a heart for the local community. CONTINUED > MAY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / KI R KL A N D

Founder, Camp Kindness Counts
Camp Kindness Counts provides children, youth, parents and caregivers with resources to help them thrive and service experiences that help better the health and happiness of both individuals and the community. What do you find most challenging and/or rewarding about the work you do? The most challenging part of my work is convincing people about the power of kindness. Kindness involves the curiosity to wonder what you can do to make a difference, the empathy to understand a different perspective or feeling, the compassion towards ourselves in challenging times, and so much more. Witnessing a child feel a sense of purpose and joy from a kind action they performed is the most rewarding feeling in the world. How do you connect the community to your mission? We have provided enrichment to camps for all community members, for more than 8 years. Our programs and resources include character development and service-learning components; Family Service Projects, free parenting workshops on character development and free virtual workshops sharing ways to support the community as a Kindness Ambassador. As a parenting partner of UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center, we have developed the Kind World Explorers character development curriculum. What are you most excited about right now? Honestly, right now, I am most excited about creating sustainable ways to nurture and spread kindness! We are involving and teaching interested role models and gifting community members with free guides and resources to help them get started.
“I am most excited about creating sustainable ways to nurture and spread kindness!”

Our greatest challenge is keeping up with the growing need, right now that’s rental assistance to keep families in their homes as the eviction moratoriums end. Witnessing the commitment and love our front line staff share with our guests, through this pandemic and at great personal sacrifice, is incredibly rewarding! How do you connect the community to your mission? Our caring and generous Eastside neighbors share our passion to ensure that no child sleeps outside. They have been stopping by to donate, volunteer, and welcome us! What are you most excited about right now? Continuing to grow and lean into our work of centering equity and guest voice to improve our services. CONTINUED > MAY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / KI R KL A N D

Arlene Hampton
Senior Site Director, Mary's Place Family Center
Supporting families in shelter to find the stability and resources they need to move back into permanent housing. What do you find most challenging and/or rewarding about the work you do? Our greatest challenge is knowing that our brand-new family center is already full, and that there are still families and children outside in cars and tents. When we see a family achieve their dream of home, we all celebrate and do a happy dance! It’s incredibly rewarding and why we do this work. How do you connect the community to your mission? We invite our neighbors in to meet our families! Come in and help serve a meal, clean & organize, support a family’s housing search, or just say hello – you can change a life with your gift of time! What are you most excited about right now? Collaborating with partner organizations on the Eastside to provide shelter and services for families here.

Chezik Tsunoda
Founder and Film Director, No More Under
No More Under (NMU), a non-profit organization focused on water safety and drowning prevention. The documentary film Chezik produced and directed, Drowning in Silence, is about her journey of grief, channeled into purpose, after her son drowned. She traveled the country interviewing thought leaders, doctors, and families who have faced a similar tragedy as well as sharing an intimate look into her journey of healing. What do you find most challenging and/or rewarding about the work you do? The most challenging part of my work is that it’s based in grief. I talk about swimming and drowning daily. Somehow, that is also the most rewarding part of this work as it’s based on my son Yori’s story and his legacy.
How do you connect the community to your mission? We were able to work with the City of Bellevue last year to organize temporary life jacket loaner stations at our beaches. This initiative was so successful that we are partnering with them again this year, as well as local architecture nonprofit, The Loft Project, to make loaner stations permanent. We also partner with pediatricians to disperse water safety information and have a teen ambassador program. What are you most excited about right now? I’m most excited about Drowning in Silence and NMU’s Learn to Swim program. The film is on the festival circuit right now and it’s been an incredible experience. No More Under is partnering with Waterbabies, the YMCA, and Bellwether Housing for our Learn to Swim program, which provides children with free swimming lessons and resources, such as swimsuits.
