Caitlin Agnew | caitlin.agnew@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR

Taylor Robinson | taylor.robinson@citylifestyle.com

In our February’s Art issue last year, I shared my personal discovery of a new passion for painting, and because of that article and the community’s response, my art journey has continued to grow and surprise me. The photo above is some of my work created for a collaboration with Jaine Winery this past Spring, and come next Spring I’ll be featured in Carillon Point's NYB Gallery with a whole new series of work (details to come). My hope is that the artists featured in this year’s issue have a similar experience, and that our community continues to support the arts and the creatives who are willing and wanting to put themselves out there. This month’s issue is dedicated to sharing about local makers and artists in our area. As you read about a few local artisans in our community and their stories of passion and self-expression, we hope you are inspired to pursue what you love. It is easy to let our hobbies, talents and special interests fall by the wayside. We just have to be deliberate about allowing ourselves time to pour into interests that we love and that fill us up. What have you been creating lately? Share it with us at Kirkland@ citylifestyle.com. Can’t wait to see what you’ve been up to!

2022 Home Design Trends: “Perfectly Imperfect.” According to Living Spaces’ Jessica Harris, the design trend in 2022 is going to reflect the growing notion that it is OK to embrace “perfect imperfection”; whether it’s in how we perceive ourselves, or in our interior design choices - or both!

The Juxtaposition of Color and Texture Whether it’s in color, texture or a combination therein, juxtapositions that complement boldly, or ones that tastefully clash, are all in for this year. Pinks contrasting against bright greens and highlighted by gold accents have been on the rise and we are likely to see them explode in 2022. Mixing knits with satin, gold with black and a pop of turquoise, for example. It all hangs in the balance and creates a delicious burst of personality and statement to your home.

Nude Look If color is not your thing, never fear; the pull towards a minimalist, earthy, natural aesthetic remains ever popular.

Use of wood, linen, organic cotton, knits, jute and concrete define this aesthetic. Trending in 2022 is the ability to bring in sumptuous textures to monochrome, raw spaces, adding luxury and softness, especially in living rooms and bedrooms. Layering will be key across bedding and seating alike, creating a peaceful haven of comfort and tranquility.

A Biophilic Design This is a growing trend to bring the outdoors in, increase oxygenation within the home and live at one with nature. Succulents and cacti offer tactile structure and shades of green that complement any design palette. Experiment with aloe, ferns, philodendrons and snake plants, to name but a few. This will extend to more edible plant growing indoors, especially in condos with little or no outdoor space. Lavender and Rosemary make excellent additions within the home, too.

Vintage Appeal Mixing new and old is not a novel trend, but buying reclaimed furniture or repurposing older pieces is a growing vibe - and benefits the environment too. There is a strengthening appreciation for family heirlooms and the connections between past and present, as we ground ourselves within an ever-changing external world. Surrounding ourselves with objects that provide comfort and joy, as well as a feeling of safety and warmth, is a yearning that will very much translate into how we decorate our homes. The Art of Wood Carving AN INTERVIEW WITH ALEPH GEDDIS

With an appreciation of geometry, Northwest Coast Native art, world travels, and family mentors, local woodcarver Aleph Geddis has cultivated an artistic journey true to his inner calling. You may have seen his impressive one-of-a-kind 18.5 ft piece of art at the flagship Filson retail store in Seattle, but that’s just one of his many impressive creations. As an artist, he prides himself in staying true to his creative vision without compromise and finds value in taking time for each step of the process. “I think this day in age, with so many distractions, making something with your hands and being present with that process is so important. It always brings me to my center and makes everything ok,” says Geddis. Kirkland Lifestyle caught up with him to learn more about what inspires and draws him to his craft. CONTINUED >

“Growing up in the Pacific Northwest I have always been drawn to native art. I especially love all the mix of animal and human characters; they are so magical and evoke so much feeling.”

Tell us about your artist journey. I was lucky enough to have my mom marry a very talented woodcarver and wooden boat builder. I grew up in and around the carving shed, mostly making swords and other playful objects. I started sculpting with bees wax at an early age in Waldorf school. The impermanence of the substrate helped me focus on the process more so than the final piece due to that once complete, all the wax could be reused for the next project. I always loved to sculpt but never knew that carving was going to be my main area of focus. When I was 19, my dad taught my friends and I a carving class and it turned out that I had a knack for it. I was instantly inspired and dove in full force. At the time my dad needed an apprentice to help him with his bird carving, so I started working with him full time. For many years I worked alongside him helping him with his commissions, mostly carving realistic flora and fauna. At the same time, I also began my study of geometry, mostly the platonic solids and how to make them out of wood. Since then, I have been slowly going more and more into the abstract

using the structural building blocks of the geometry. I am on a never-ending search for the balance between structure and fluidity, the hard and the soft. Wood has always been my favorite medium to work in mostly because of the feeling of the chip coming off as a sharp blade cuts through the wood. It is such an intimate process with each wood having different qualities. You created an 18.5 ft piece of art for Filson’s retail store in Seattle. Tell us about your appreciation of Northwest Native art and how it influences you. Growing up in the Pacific Northwest I have always been drawn to native art. I especially love all the mix of animal and human characters; they are so magical and evoke so much feeling. Early in my artist path I studied northwest coast native art and was fully consumed by it. There is a sense of form and relationship between the compound curves that is very special. The steps I learned to carve early on my artist path are still the process I use to carve my abstract and geometric pieces currently.

What is your process when starting a new project? I start a project with lots of drawing, though drawing does not come naturally. I think more 3d and learned to draw in order to make my sculptures that I had in my head. In making a big project, after my preliminary drawings, I then carve a scale model. That way, I learn the steps to be taken on the full-sized piece. I have different areas of study and each new piece is informed by the previous works. It’s like I have different story lines that continue to grow and evolve but building from the previous characters. With my new works it feels like I am learning a new language and like I am just now learning to write. What and who inspires you? I am inspired by process and love to watch people making things by hand and the steps they go through to create. I look at a lot of sculpture from the mid-century and just before. I discovered Brancusi after I already started carving geometric totem poles. I love his raw yet refined style; he was way ahead of his time. I am really inspired by West African textiles and masks, like those of the Dogan tribe. My stepdad has been a huge influence on me and is a big part of who I am as an artist. His open-door policy with the carving shed and the way he shares everything he knows so freely is really inspiring. I am very grateful for the time I was lucky enough to spend with Duane Pasco. His process and focus are impeccable, he finishes one step completely before moving onto the next. It sounds simple but is not always easy. What challenges do you experience in your artistic journey? The most challenging part of the artist path for me is finding the balance of making an income and being true to my art without compromise. Doing a lot of commission work early on with my dad, and sometimes almost feeling like a surrogate artist, lead me to be very selective in making pieces for people. I only make pieces that I am inspired to make and what I would already want to make without the commission. I have been lucky enough to have a lot of support on my path by people who get what I am doing. Describe your style. I really don’t know how to describe my style. If you found one of my pieces buried in the dirt, I would want you to not know if it was from the future or the past. An ancient future of sorts. I want you to see that it was made by a human and feel that energy in it. My recent works I see as place holders. They are meant to ground and center, and then transport you from that space into new uncharted territories. You can find Aleph’s work at Glasswing in Seattle and The Window in LA. He is also starting to do “secret sales.” Find him online to be in the know at alephgeddis.com.

Unleashing The Power of Art COMMUNITY INSTITUTION THE KIRKLAND ARTS CENTER CONTINUES TO PROVIDE ENGAGING ART EXPERIENCES FOR ALL. ARTICLE BY BREE O'BRIEN PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF KIRKLAND ARTS CENTER

Kirkland Lifestyle connected with Lauren Lyddon, the Director of Marketing & Communications for the Kirkland Arts Center, to learn more about this local jewel. Occupying the historic Peter Kirk Building (built 1890-92), the KAC’s mission is to unleash the power of art to ignite individual growth and self-expression, build community spirit, and cultivate cultural vibrancy. KL: Can you tell me a little about the history of the KAC? Kirkland Arts Center has been serving the Kirkland area since 1962, previously as the Creative Arts League. Nearly sixty years ago, a group of artists interested in providing more opportunities in the arts locally purchased the Peter Kirk Building and transformed it into an exhibition gallery, community art studios, and classrooms! We’ve maintained that sense of community and connection while innovating in our offerings. Over the past two years, we’ve offered virtual classes for the first time, and January of 2022 saw the launch of our new teen program. KL: Who uses the KAC and for what? Artists and those who would like to become artists! We welcome people of all ages from throughout the Seattle area to take classes in subjects ranging from ceramics to art history. For those not ready to commit to a quarter length class – or those who can’t get enough! – we also offer life drawing sessions on a weekly basis, with live models. Visitors can also drop by the gallery, which is free to the public and features more than six contemporary art exhibitions each year. CONTINUED >

A collection of pottery produced at the KAC

KL: How did the KAC survive the pandemic? Truthfully, we survived the pandemic thanks to the resilience of this community, our volunteers, donors, and staff. The team immediately pivoted to online classes – a huge shift for an organization like ours which has always been grounded in being on-location in our building – and increased our pursuit of grants and donor funding. We’re really grateful for everyone who worked so hard to ensure we’re still here. We’re also elated to have been able to bring unconventional arts programming to the community in all phases of the pandemic. These offerings included an all-digital exhibition, a resource hub for folks to engage in arts experiences at home, and “Art for the Helpers,” a project where we made arts classes available to first responders and frontline workers at no charge. KL: What’s something that local residents may not know about the KAC? That there’s truly a place for you here. Whether you’re an experienced artist, or haven’t picked up a drawing instrument since you were a kid, there’s a spot for you. The teachers are incredible, the options are nearly endless, and you might be surprised at what a difference a regular art practice makes for you.

KL: What can we look forward to at the KAC? Just last month we launched our teen program (KirklandArtsCenter.org/Teen) and there’s still time for young people to get plugged in this winter! This program offers teens a broad range of ways to engage, ranging from Teen Open Studios (free to all, with supplies provided) to series of classes taught by experts to help high schoolers complete portfolios for further education or opportunities in the arts. People of all ages should check out Spring quarter classes (KirklandArtsCenter.org) and try something new, or build on their skills in ceramics, painting, drawing, printmaking, or art history. Drop by our gallery any time before February 12th to view our current exhibition, Great Mysterious Heart by Megan Prince. Visit our website for details on this and the next exhibition this Spring.

Three Must See Chinese Artists RYAN JAMES FINE ARTS CURATES AN EXHIBIT TO CELEBRATE CHINESE NEW YEAR

ARTICLE BY CAITLIN AGNEW

In honor of Chinese New Year, Ryan James Fine Arts will be exhibiting three Chinese artists through the month of February. The gallery owners, Ryan James and Jessica Kravitz, discovered the artists in 2016 when they produced a show with curator Paul Manfredi, Ekphrastic Assimilations, featuring mixed-media art by six Chinese artists and six WA artists. The exhibition crossed boundaries between image and text, cultural backgrounds, and language, forming assimilation of expression. Produced in partnership with The Seattle Art Museum Gardner Center and the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation. All three featured artists are working in the field of contemporary art, each in their own distinctive style. Zhong Biao has such a strong painterly quality to his works pulling strong emotion from the work. Lv De’an has a way of evoking his poetry into each work communicating through paint vs. words. Yan Li commands surrealism creating enchanting worlds. For more information visit ryanjamesfinearts.com or stop by the gallery located at Kirkland Urban.

Zhong Biao Born in Chongqing, China in 1968. He was educated at the Central Academy of Fine Art in Hangzhou and is currently a professor of painting at the Sichuan Academy of Art. He has held one-person shows in China, Singapore, Indonesia, South Korea, Japan, the United States, Germany, and the UK, and has his work been collected by individuals and prominent art institutions throughout the world. His painting, which in recent years is both abstract and hyper, almost photo-realistic in quality, creates spellbinding juxtapositions of method and content at once. Described by one critic as a form of “visual archaeology,” Zhong strives to bring about the viewer’s awareness of deeper often invisible forms of energy and order which give rise to the phenomenal world.

Yan Li Born in Beijing in 1954. Yan’s contribution to contemporary Chinese art reaches back to its inception in 1979 when the first unofficially sanctioned artists took to the streets of Beijing — Yan Li among them — to demand artistic freedom as a basic human right. This group was named the Stars, and Yan Li was a founding member. Also, in the late 1970s he was a founding member of the Misty Poetry group which again made an indelible mark on Chinese cultural history, transforming Chinese poetry from propagandistic boilerplate to a fully realized form of self-expression. In the decades following, Yan Li has continued creating visual art and publishing poetry in venues ranging from Beijing to New York, from Tehran to Sydney, and of course, Shanghai, where he maintains his primary residence. As an artist, poet, and arts organizer, Yan Li is a major feature of the Chinese contemporary art scene.

Lv De’an Born in Fujian Province in 1960. He enrolled as an art major in the Fujian School of Arts and Crafts in 1978, and shortly thereafter also began writing poetry. Though not naturally given to social interaction, and for decades has been famously laconic and even reticent to engage in artistic movements, he was nonetheless a founding member of both the “Friday Group” of poets and artists in the city of Fuzhou in 1983, and the “They Group” of poets in Nanjing in 1985, two seminal arts groups which helped to propel an entirely new sensibility in Chinese artistic and literary culture in the late twentieth century. Though not a prolific poet, Lv has produced numerous poetry collections, most recently Stones 顽石 (2000). His visual art has evolved considerably over the years, beginning with more realistic works, and gradually shifting, particularly after a three-year sojourn to New York City in the early 1990s, to entirely abstract oil painting. He currently resides in a small, self-constructed house in the mountains on the outskirts of Fuzhou, as well as New York.

G IV IN G BAC K | A RTS + CULTURE

As one of the largest employers in Kirkland, Google aims to be a helpful neighbor by being active in the community and giving back to the neighborhoods it inhabits. This year, Google and Google.Org, Google’s philanthropy, provided grants to local non-profit community organizations including ATTAIN Housing, The Kirkland Parks & Community Foundation, Lake Washington School Foundation, Kirkland Kids Theatre-Studio East and the Kirkland Rotary and Chamber. Since 2004, their employees—with matching

And their employees have also served over 52,000 hours of volunteer and pro bono work with area nonprofits and schools. “We’re always looking for new ways to be stronger community members. We often team up with local nonprofits to better understand local opportunities so we can co-create designs that inspire innovation, big ideas, and community,” a Google spokesperson said. And oftentimes, that means working with local artists to incorporate murals, photography, locally-sourced materials or even historical elements into their office spaces. In particular, their current partnership with ArtLifting has enabled them to support local artist communities and give back. ArtLifting is a program that champions artists who are impacted by housing insecurity and disabilities by giving a platform to these artists that have traditionally been underrepresented in the contemporary art market. Each artist has a unique perspective, style, and story based on the diversity of their lived experiences, artistic talents, and innovative processes. The powerful combination of their artwork and stories inspire communities and drive social change. “Working with ArtLifting presented an opportunity to add a unique flavor to the Google Kirkland office that made it feel Googley and reflected the local culture while also showcasing the work of exceptional artists. Their beautiful art helps us foster a workplace of belonging and inclusivity,” says a Google spokesperson, “supporting the local community is core to Google’s workplace philosophy because if our local communities thrive, we thrive too.” Currently there are eight ArtLifting pieces on Google’s Kirkland 6th campus.

T r avel R ecom mend at ion s for Food ies “Slovenia borders Italy and Croatia, which is to say there are a lot of shared values in and around food; they have really great cheese, dairy, beef, pasta, but very few tourists, hardly any. So if you love Italy, that kind of specific travel and food experience, particularly Northern Italy, because you can see the Alps from where they are. It’s picture perfect, a beautiful place, and also where orange wine is from.” Dennis also highly recommends Costa Rica, Hawaii and Finland. “Most people love the idea of travel, but we tend to pick the same places when we travel, and there is nothing wrong with that, they are amazing for a reason, but when you get off the beaten path a little bit, you learn the difference between vacation and travel.” In addition to travels, Dennis is a huge advocate for supporting local businesses and the connection grilling in your own backyard can make. “Grilling is inherently communal. You talk to your neighbors, they smell it, they ask you what you’re cooking; the whole act of it is a community. One of the most common fears Dennis hears from people cooking and/or grilling at home is, ‘where do I start?’ Dennis recommends cooking the things that bring you joy — things that are on a restaurant menu you can’t NOT order because you’re so pumped that those dishes are on there. “Find the things that you love. Take the stress out of food. Feed people because all they really care about is spending time with you. Bring joy back into the kitchen.” FEB R UARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E .
