My favorite story this month features four amazing California destinations, almost all along the coast. I might be slightly biased though because I actually got to experience all four of them by road trip this spring. It’s honestly hard to suggest a favorite because they all have amazing and unique qualities. Santa Barbara’s ocean and mountain views, Carmel’s absolutely stunning scenery and European vibe, and of

course Napa’s food, wine, and overall beauty. And while it may sound intimidating, I highly recommend doing this trip by car. It is definitely a push to get out of the PNW, but once in California and on the Pacific Coast Highway, you will not regret it. The views are one of a kind, and considered a bucket list for many. Our cover story features two local and unique boating experiences you may not have known about. I love that the owners of these completely different vessels have a special story for their inspiration. Check out the details on page 22. We hope you enjoy this month’s issue and we hope to see you around!

CULTURE? DO YOU HAVE ANY PARTICULAR COMPANY BENEFITS, PERKS OR QUIRKS? Startups are fun and crazy. On your first day at Statsig, you will need to assemble your desk yourself which is an exercise that builds empathy for writing great documentation for our customers. We offer top-tier health insurance, unlimited PTO, free lunch/ dinner, drinks, snacks and every Friday we order in Happy Hour food and show demos of what we’ve all done over the week. Lately, to force people to take their PTO, we have been converting most three day weekends into four day weekends. Quirks? A ton. One person puts peanut butter and spinach in his smoothies and another goes to sleep at 6AM and typically starts at 1 or 2PM to work. ARE YOU WORKING IN PERSON OR VIRTUAL? WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THE EASTSIDE? Our office is in Kirkland, the birthplace of Costco. This early in the startup phase, we thought it’s important to be in person to be able to whiteboard ideas and designs. I really like the suburban feel. We were specifically looking for open space plans and newer interiors – and we are lucky to have found one in a central location.

Bellevue Arts and Crafts Fair 1950s
SUMMER COMMUNITY EVENTS HAVE SUFFERED BECAUSE OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. But the memories and histories of the fun events of the past are easy to locate for anyone with a penchant for local history. The Eastside Heritage Center and other local historical organizations maintain interesting collections of photographs, stories clipped from old newspapers and memorabilia documenting how we celebrated in the past. Indeed, many of these events actually helped the towns of the Eastside grow. In both Kirkland and Bellevue, Fourth of July celebrations also dominate the summer calendar. In Kirkland, the annual Fourth of July parade and family festival is also on hold. But Kirkland may have the record for the earliest Independence Day celebration on the Eastside. Pioneer Harry French held a picnic with friends on July 4th, 1881. The Kirkland Heritage collection includes papers and photographs from many early residents, including the French family. By 1919, Kirkland was the place to celebrate the Fourth – the town had the three big Ps – a parade, a picnic and pyrotechnics – fireworks.

In the late 1940s Kirkland event organizers added a fourth P - pigs. During one summer event, there were pig races. Not just any pig races – these pigs were sent down chutes- or slides – into the lake. Teenage girls were recruited to be in the water and herd the pigs ashore. In Bellevue thousands of people converge in Downtown Bellevue Park. A children’s area entertains families during the day and when evening begins, orchestra concerts provide entertainment until it is dark enough for fireworks. As of press time, the Downtown Bellevue Association website said the event was on hold for 2021. The Bellevue Strawberry Festival put what was once a sleepy village centered around today’s Old Main Street on the map. It began in 1925 after Jenny Bovee dreamed about a festival to promote the Bellevue farmers’ main crop – strawberries. Grown mostly by Japanese families, the strawberry fields then covered much of what is today’s downtown and Overlake areas. That first year, strawberry shortcake and other booths were enjoyed by 3,000. Back then, attendees from Seattle either had to take a ferry or drive around the lake – there CONTINUED >

camps and the fields lay fallow. The Heritage Center revived the Strawberry Festival early this century, although the event has been on hiatus recently. Prized among the many artifacts in the Eastside Heritage Center collection are photos from early festivals and even old berry baskets from the 1920s-30s. The Covid pandemic has put the long-standing Bellevue Arts Museum Art Fair – one of the centerpieces of the local summer scene – on hold. (There will be a virtual fair July 21-August 4 to showcase artists work.) Similar to the Strawberry Festival, the Bellevue art fair began as a marketing ploy but transformed into a wonderful annual event. As World War II ended, Bellevue Square rapidly took shape. One of the highlights of what was then an open air shopping center was the Crabapple Restaurant. Carl Pefley, the restaurateur, asked the architect to create wall space to display local artwork. Pefley and his wife, Pat, said an outdoor art fair would help bring people to the shopping center. The Pefleys invited local artists to not only display their work, but to demonstrate, too. There were 70 artists and 30 volunteers to help run the first event in 1947. At least 30,000 people attended. Lunch was available at the Crabapple and at a Bellevue Arts and Crafts Fair 1970

patio location staffed and served by members of the Overlake Service League. (The League continues to operate to this day but is now called Bellevue LifeSpring.) The large crowd surprised organizers who knew a good thing when they saw it. They moved quickly to form the Pacific Northwest Arts and Crafts Association, incorporating in October of 1947. By the 1950s, it became “the in-thing” for Bellevue residents to brag about volunteering at the Fair. The Square provided space for the Association to host a year-round display area – called the PANACA (Pacific Northwest Arts and Crafts Association) Gallery and the Association eventually established the Bellevue Art Museum, leading to the 2001 opening of the landmark red museum building in downtown Bellevue to serve Eastside art patrons. With the end of the pandemic in sight, fun, community-building festivals could be making a comeback. Both Kirkland Heritage Society and the Eastside Heritage Center, like most historical groups, depend upon volunteers and contributions to maintain their collections. To help preserve local

PHOTOGRAPHY LIFE N LIGHT
The inspiration behind Como Boat came from my travels in Italy, specifically in Lake Como and Venice. I remember my first time in Venice. I was 19 years old. My family had just gotten off the airplane. Outside in the lagoon were beautiful wood boats, meticulously maintained by their captains. They were THE expensive shuttle service to your hotel. My father always liked to splurge while on vacation. He hired the boat and that experience, upon arrival, riding in that vintage craft, ripe with mahogany and leather, prosecco in hand, through the grand canal, was the best thing we ever did in Venice. Or maybe ever did. Another wonderful experience I had was in Lake Como. There were boats for hire along the lake. We would rent the boats for as long as we could in the daytime, exploring the magnificent lake, surrounded by the French and Italian alps. Swimming, sunbathing, wine, cheese...we didn’t need anything else. Before Como Restaurant opened two summers ago, I commissioned the restoration of a similar boat. I was hoping if people could ride on a boat like this, they could experience a little bit of “la dolce vita” right here on Lake Washington. It was completed upon our opening date. The boat is for hire upon request. We meet customers on the dock in front of the restaurant and explore the lake for roughly an hour. When we return their table is ready for them at the restaurant for dinner. Custom pick-ups at private residence docks available upon request.

F remont Avenue Boat OWNER: MICHAEL LUIS, PRIOR MAYOR OF MEDINA, HISTORIAN, AND AUTHOR.
The Fremont Avenue is designed to look and feel like the old steamers of the “Mosquito Fleet” that provided transportation on Lake Washington and Puget Sound in the late 19th and early 20th century. Before the region had a well-developed road and bridge network, everyone got around by boat. Homes on the east side of Lake Washington were always oriented toward the water, with the front door facing the dock, because that is how people would arrive. Many of the original ferry docks on the Eastside still exist and are public parks, including Medina Beach, Clyde Beach, Meydenbauer Park, Kirkland Downtown Park, Enatai and Newport. The water is such an important part of our local lifestyle, and we want to give everyone the opportunity to see their hometown from the water. By offering both ticketed tours and private charters we provide everyone with that chance to take a local boat ride. Our tours are informal, family friendly and affordable, and the narration provides insights into local history. The Fremont Avenue is a bit funky, but also well-appointed. It provides ample seating spaces both inside and on deck and great views. We are equally comfortable hosting lively parties and formal weddings. We often provide service from private homes and docks on the Eastside and Mercer Island. We can provide boat rides for guests at parties and community events.

3. YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK Yellowstone’s 2.2 million acres include colorful hot springs, awe-inspiring waterfalls, fascinating mudpots, explosive geysers, diverse wildlife and more. It is home to more hot springs and geysers than anywhere else on Earth. The oldest and largest herd of bison in the country lives at Yellowstone, as well as elk, wolves and grizzly bears.
4.
BRYCE CANYON NATIONAL PARK Bryce Canyon National Park, located in southwestern Utah, is home to the world’s largest concentration of hoodoos on Earth. With its fascinating landscape composed of hoodoos, horseshoe-shaped amphitheaters and whimsical limestone rock formations, a visit to Bryce Canyon is often likened to a visit to another planet. This stunning landscape, formed by wind, water and snow, draws hikers, rock climbers, photographers, stargazers and cross-country skiers.
5.
GLACIER NATIONAL PARK Glacier National Park is located on the border of Canada and the United States and is often referred to as the “Crown of the Continent.” Visitors will find more than 700 glacial lakes and many hiking trails, ranging in difficulty from easy to strenuous. Going-to-the-Sun Road, known as one of the most spectacular scenic drives in the country, is a paved, two-lane highway that divides the park into east and west regions.

ZION NATIONAL PARK Zion National Park’s colorful sandstone cliffs, lush plateaus covered in pine and junipers, narrow canyons, the Virgin River, plus seeps, springs and waterfalls are just some of the scenic wonders here. One of Zion’s most popular hikes is known as the Narrows, the slimmest section of Zion Canyon. Other popular attractions include the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive, Angels Landing, Observation Point and Canyon Overlook Trail.
7. GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park spans 310,000 acres and towers above the Jackson Hole Valley. The Teton Mountains, the youngest in the Rockies, are reflected majestically on the surfaces of six pristine lakes and the Snake River. Experienced climbers can summit the 13,770foot Grand Teton, and long-distance hikers can take the Paintbrush Canyon-Cascade Canyon Loop for impressive views of the mountain.
8.
GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK This UNESCO World Heritage Site is 277 river miles long, up to 18 miles wide and 1 mile deep. The South Rim is home to Grand Canyon Village and Bright Angel Trail. The West Rim is home to the Grand Canyon Skywalk, a glass bridge that extends 70 feet over the edge of a cliff. The North Rim is the most remote access point, allowing visitors to experience the park firsthand through intense hiking and backpacking and thrilling river rafting.
Hopefully, this list has inspired you to start planning your next adventure. Whether the mountains are calling, your inner daredevil needs to be satiated or a scenic road trip is in order, America’s national parks are begging to be explored! 38
