LIFESTYLE LETTER

Letter from the Editor I have always been a creative person. From a very young age, I discovered that I had an immense love for music. It started with piano, and as I got older, I moved to the guitar. I have always played by ear and picked it up really easily. It just clicked with me and always came so naturally. While everyone else in my family was geared more towards sports, I always gravitated toward creative outlets like music, dance, and writing. I have always had a vivid imagination and could easily get lost in storytelling, writing, and dreaming up all sorts of things. When I became an adult, I realized I could use that creative energy in my career. First, as a classroom teacher, I was able to bring creativity into my work by writing themed curriculum and creating integrative units that made learning interactive and engaging. I began freelance writing for a few publications and eventually found a way to channel my love of creating and writing into becoming the editor of this magazine, a role I have had the privilege of holding for the past decade. So much of what I do allows me to use that creativity that fills me up. Whether I am working with business owners to tell their stories to our readers or collaborating with my photographer on styled photoshoots for our national content, I get to create something unique. One of my favorite things about being part of this publication all these years has been the people I have had the pleasure of meeting and learning about. We have such a vibrant city, full of businesses and people who reflect that Midwestern charm while also showcasing creativity, innovation, and a genuine passion for what they do. We have had the privilege of bringing you stories of people in our community who are creating, dreaming, and inspiring us all. Whether it is a James Beard pastry chef like Megan Garrelts, who had the courage to open her own bakery, Cornflower Baked Goods; an architect like David Manica, who has designed unique bars in Kansas City after being inspired by international travel and the opportunity to experience some of the best restaurants and bars in the world; or a father and visionary like James Arkell and Lamar Hunt Jr., who are bringing an entire ultra-accessible amusement park and entertainment center to our city, each story reminds me just how much creativity and vision exists right here in our community. Those are just a few of the many talented individuals I have had the privilege of sharing with you over the years. When I think back on all of the people that we have been able to interview and learn more about, I am reminded just how much creativity and passion exists right here in our city. In our Style issue, we are honored to share the stories of designers, stylists, creatives, and business owners who use their ingenuity, talent, and vision to bring their ideas to life. Each of them has found a way to turn what they love into something meaningful that they can share with our city. That is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do. I love being able to share the stories behind the people and businesses that make Kansas City what it is, and to give our readers a glimpse into the creativity and hard work that goes into bringing their ideas to life. Skin That You Want to Show Off Let’s talk about a customized approach to tackling post-summer hyperpigmentation

S

ummer was iconic, but your skin is filing a formal complaint.

Spending time in the sun may have given you the perfect glow, but as that tan fades, you’ll likely notice sun spots, melasma, dull, dehydrated skin, and new fine lines and wrinkles. Sun damage ages the skin quickly, and panic buying new “anti-aging” serums and creams won’t bring back collagen that’s already been lost.

At KC Health Solutions, we treat sun damage, aging, and other skin concerns at the source, not just on the surface. The real changes happen beneath the skin, where collagen and elastin begin to break down long before you see them in the mirror. By stimulating your body's natural collagen production with evidence-based treatments and pairing those treatments with a personalized home skincare routine, we help repair existing damage while slowing future aging. Healthy skin isn't created by one product or one treatment; it's built with the right plan. Tell us your goals, explore personalized treatment options, and connect with our team—all in one place. DESIGNING

KANSAS CITY Five Local Creatives to Know

I NSP IR E D BY | L I FE + C ULT U RE

Kristen Ridler, founder and principal designer of Kristen Ridler Design, creates modern interiors that blend timeless details with thoughtful design choices tailored to the way her clients live.

Q: When starting a new project, what is the first thing you want to learn about your client? A: I want to understand their goals for their home and how they truly live day to day. My most successful designs happen when a space not only looks beautiful but also supports the client’s everyday lifestyle. Q: What’s one design element every home should have, regardless of size or style? A: Layered lighting is one of the most important parts of the design process. I also believe every home benefits from original art and a few well-placed martini tables. You can never have too many! Q: What is your favorite way to make a space feel both beautiful and livable? A: I love incorporating real greenery, whether it’s a potted tree indoors or fresh vegetation in a vase. Living elements bring so much warmth, texture, and life to a space in a way accessories simply can’t.

Q: How would you describe your design style in three words, and why do those words best represent your work? A: Modern, timeless, and intentional. I believe the most successful spaces are those that feel current while also standing the test of time. Every choice should have a purpose and support the way my clients want to experience their homes. Q: What is one design trend you’re loving right now, and one trend you think is on its way out? A: I’m loving that clients are embracing more color. After years of neutral spaces dominating interiors, people are ready to bring in personality, warmth, and colors that make their homes feel uniquely theirs.

Q: What’s one piece of decorating advice every homeowner should know? A: Pay attention to scale. Whether you’re selecting tile, a light fixture, or furniture, choosing the right proportions can make or break a room. The right scale is what helps a space feel balanced and intentional. CONTINUED >

Jenna Kaufman, founder and principal designer of Lovegood Interiors, creates thoughtfully designed homes and commercial spaces that balance everyday function with timeless style.

entertaining, and how they really live. For a commercial space, it’s about how customers experience the brand. Great design should always support real life first.

Q: How would you describe your design style in three words, and why do those words best represent your work? A: Intentional, livable, and elevated. Whether I’m designing a family home or a commercial space, my goal is always the same: creating environments that feel welcoming, function effortlessly for real life, and look beautiful without feeling like a museum where you’re afraid to sit down.

Q: What’s one design element every home should have, regardless of size or style? A: Layered lighting. I believe every home needs a mix of ambient, task, and accent lighting instead of relying only on overhead fixtures. It instantly creates a warmer, more inviting atmosphere.

Q: What is one design trend you’re loving right now, and one trend you think is on its way out? A: I’m loving rich earth tones and textured plaster or limewash finishes that add warmth and soul to a room. On the way out? The stark, all-white minimalist look. People are ready for homes with more color, warmth, and personality. Q: When starting a new project, what is the first thing you want to learn about your client? A: I always want to understand how the space needs to function day to day. For a home, that means learning about family routines,

Q: What is your favorite way to make a space feel both beautiful and livable? A: Mixing high and low elements. I love pairing durable performance fabrics with vintage finds or statement pieces so clients can host friends, enjoy a glass of red wine, and truly live in their spaces without worrying about every little thing. Q: What’s one piece of decorating advice every homeowner should know? A: Don’t feel like you have to fill every corner right away. Invest in foundational pieces you truly love, let your home evolve naturally, and give each room space to breathe. The best homes feel collected over time, not decorated in a single shopping trip. Abraham and Christopher Colone, the duo behind Atelier Colone LLC, believe the best interiors are both beautiful and deeply personal. Their approach blends classic materials, thoughtful details and a strong sense of how their clients actually live, resulting in spaces that feel elevated without losing their warmth. Q: How would you describe your design style in three words, and why? Abraham + Christopher: Classic, elevated and intentional. These three words represent us at our core because we focus on sustainable design and classic materials presented in a sophisticated way. Q: What design trend are you loving right now, and what do you think is on its way out? Abraham + Christopher: We are loving the darker wood stains that are making a comeback. They bring warmth and character to a space. We think very cold, white spaces with no personality are on their way out.

Photoshoot location: Cleo Club Cleo Club - Designed by the Rockhill Restaurant Group team in collaboration with creative design and styling by Molly Kavanagh with The Applied Eye.

Q: When starting a new project, what is the first thing you want to learn about your client? Abraham + Christopher: We often sit with our clients and their families in their current space to get a feel for their lives. We get to know them as individuals,

family members and business owners and learn what their day-to-day looks like. That allows us to create truly intentional design. Q: What is one design element every home should have, regardless of size or style? Abraham + Christopher: Three types of lighting: ambient, task and accent. Good lighting can make even the simplest space visually pleasing. Q: What is your favorite way to make a space feel both beautiful and livable? Abraham + Christopher: Great art, comfortable furniture, greenery and, again, lighting. Those elements bring warmth, personality and life to a space. Q: What is one piece of decorating advice every homeowner should know? Abraham + Christopher: Invest in great furniture, art and rugs because you will get the most life out of those pieces. And collect from your travels. Those personal pieces are what make a home feel uniquely yours.

Q: What is one design trend you’re loving right now, and one trend you think is on its way out? A: I’m loving the growing use of natural stone beyond countertops. It’s showing up on fireplaces, cased openings, and shower accents, adding warmth and character. As for what’s fading, I think the fully open floor plan has had its moment. People are embracing more intentional spaces like dining rooms and cozy lounges that feel inviting and offer a little privacy. Q: When starting a new project, what is the first thing you want to learn about your client? A: I like to learn about their favorite vacation spots, restaurants, and hobbies before we even talk about the house. Those details tell me so much about who they are and help me create a space that truly reflects their lifestyle. Q: What’s one design element every home should have, regardless of size or style? A: Art and meaningful objects that tell a personal story. I love seeing pieces throughout a home that spark memories or bring joy, even if no one else understands their significance. Photography by Josie Benefield

Celeste Antoine, owner and principal designer of Spirit Animal Interiors, creates bold, personality-filled spaces that celebrate individuality while blending beauty with everyday function.

Q: How would you describe your design style in three words, and why do those words best represent your work? A: Unbound, vivid, and intentional. Every project inspires me to create something authentic and meaningful. I don’t believe in following strict design rules. My goal is to design a home that feels completely true to my client while adding a little whimsy along the way, even if that means breaking a few traditional design “rules.”

Q: What is your favorite way to make a space feel both beautiful and livable? A: Layering texture. Combining luxurious fabrics, warm woods, leather accents, and touches of raw brass creates a space that feels rich, welcoming, and comfortable. Q: What’s one piece of decorating advice every homeowner should know? A: Never underestimate the power of paint and lighting. If you’re not ready for a full renovation, updating a paint color and swapping out light fixtures can completely transform a space with relatively little effort.

Erica Kay, founder and principal designer of Erica Kay Design, creates warm, timeless interiors that are thoughtfully tailored to the rhythms, routines, and stories of the families who live in them. Q: How would you describe your design style in three words, and why do those words best represent your work? A: Warm, timeless, and intentional. Beautiful homes catch your eye, but warm homes capture your heart. I want every home I design to feel like it gives you a hug the moment you walk through the door. Every decision has a purpose, whether it’s creating a kitchen where family memories are made or designing spaces that make everyday life run more smoothly. My goal is to create homes that feel just as good 20 years from now as they do on move-in day. Q: What is one design trend you’re loving right now, and one trend you think is on its way out? A: I love that rooms are being given permission to have personalities again. Instead of opening everything up, people are embracing libraries, breakfast nooks, sculleries, and spaces designed around how they actually live. I think the “everything must be open” floor plan is fading. Sometimes walls are your friends, and a little separation can make a home feel more functional and inviting. Q: When starting a new project, what is the first thing you want to learn about your client? A: I want to know how their home truly functions day to day. How do their mornings unfold? Where does the mail collect? What drives them crazy about their current space? Those details help create a home that feels designed specifically for their family.

Q: What’s one design element every home should have, regardless of size or style? A: Thoughtful storage. A beautiful home isn’t much fun if you can’t find your keys. I love creating hidden storage, hardworking cabinetry, and custom solutions that make everyday life easier while keeping the home feeling calm and organized. Q: What is your favorite way to make a space feel both beautiful and livable? A: I believe a great floor plan is the foundation of a great home. Once the function is right, we can layer in natural materials, beautiful lighting, texture, antiques, collected pieces, and plants to create a space that feels personal and full of life. Q: What’s one piece of decorating advice every homeowner should know? A: Don’t buy the room. Collect it. The most meaningful homes mix old and new, incorporating pieces with stories and memories. Your home shouldn’t look like it arrived on one delivery truck. It should tell the story of the people who live there. I don’t design homes to impress your guests. I design them to make you love coming home.

HOSPITAL-LEVEL PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANNALISE HOUGHTON

Care,

ANYWHERE For many people, the most stressful part of a medical or dental procedure isn't the treatment itself. It's everything surrounding it. The unfamiliar hospital, the long wait for an operating room, or the anxiety of walking into a place that feels anything but comfortable. MAPS Healthcare Logistics is working to change that by bringing hospital-level anesthesia services directly into dental and medical offices throughout the Kansas City area. Rather than simply providing an anesthesia professional for a procedure, MAPS manages the entire anesthesia process. Their team completes pre-anesthesia evaluations, coordinates medical clearances, brings hospital-grade equipment and medications, stays with patients through recovery, and follows up the next day. "We're not sending a provider," says co-founder Daniel Roberson. "We're deploying a department." That difference is what inspired Roberson to build the company. Throughout his career in anesthesia, he watched practices refer patients to hospitals or surgery centers simply because anesthesia wasn't available in the office. The result was often unexpected facility fees, weeks or months of waiting, and in some cases, patients who never returned for the treatment they needed. "We saw the need for a mobile service that would widen access for patients while letting practices offer anesthesia to their own patients without building a surgery center," Roberson says. "Patients deserve more than having an anesthesia provider in the room. They deserve a team built around preparation, communication, and emergency readiness."

Unlike many mobile anesthesia services, MAPS handles virtually every aspect of anesthesia care. Before procedure day, the company's nurse practitioner team performs a comprehensive history and physical, reviews medications, orders testing when needed, and coordinates any additional medical optimization. MAPS also carries its own DEA license and controlled medications, eliminating extra work for the practice. For physicians and dentists, that means one trusted partner overseeing the entire anesthesia process instead of piecing together multiple services. For patients, it means familiarity which is equally valuable. "A great deal of what people call fear of anesthesia is really fear of the hospital," Roberson says. "Walking into a building you've been to before, greeted by staff you recognize, in a chair you've sat in, eases the whole day in a way an unfamiliar facility never can." As more procedures safely move into outpatient settings, office-based anesthesia continues to grow. Advances in monitoring technology, medications, and patient screening now make it possible for many healthy patients to receive the same level of anesthesia care they would expect in a hospital while avoiding lengthy scheduling delays and unnecessary facility costs. "The standard doesn't move when the setting does," Roberson says. "Anesthesia in your dentist's office should mean the same monitoring, the same preparation, and the same care you'd receive in a hospital." CONTINUED >

45

That standard is something Director or Operations and partner David Tafreshi has helped build from the ground up. Drawing from years in anesthesia and leadership, Tafreshi believes preparation begins long before a patient enters the procedure room. "You don't build systems around average days," he says. "You build them around the unexpected." Every operational decision, he explains, starts with a simple question. "Does this make the patient's experience safer? If the answer is no, we don't do it." That philosophy influences everything from comprehensive pre-anesthesia evaluations completed days before surgery to standardized equipment layouts that remain identical from one office to the next. "The point of all that preparation is to be able to say yes," Tafreshi says. "A well-screened patient is a patient we can safely care for in an office. Occasionally someone truly belongs in a hospital, and knowing the difference is part of doing this properly." One of the company's most unique influences comes from outside of healthcare altogether. Roberson, an avid pilot, credits aviation with shaping many of MAPS' safety systems. "Aviation doesn't rely on perfect pilots," he says. "It relies on systems that anticipate human error." He often repeats one lesson he learned during flight training. "Hope is not a plan." Just as pilots never rely solely on memory before takeoff, every MAPS procedure follows standardized checklists, equipment inspections, medication verification, and team briefings before anesthesia begins. "The checklist exists precisely because experience makes people confident," Roberson says. "Confidence is where steps get skipped." That commitment to preparation becomes even more important when caring for children. Unlike many mobile anesthesia providers, MAPS staffs every pediatric case with two Certified Registered

46

EXP E RT H E LP | P RO FES SION AL SE RVICE S

Nurse Anesthetists. "Children deserve every advantage we can reasonably provide," Tafreshi says. "Emergency readiness means a second set of trained hands is already there, not on the way." The company also eases the workload for the practices it serves. Office teams no longer have to chase medical clearances, manage controlled medications, or coordinate complicated anesthesia logistics. "We take care of all of it," Tafreshi says. "The patient arrives prepared, we arrive having already met them, and the day runs on time." For many patients, the greatest benefit is finally receiving care they may have postponed for years. "Dental anxiety and procedural fear are incredibly common," Tafreshi says. "Safe anesthesia allows patients who may have delayed treatment for years to finally receive the care they need comfortably." Many leave with a different perspective than they expected. "What we hear afterward is usually, 'That wasn't nearly as scary as I expected.'" As MAPS continues to grow, Roberson says the company remains intentionally focused on relationships rather than rapid expansion. "This work runs on trust that's built one case at a time," he says. "Being local means our partners see the same faces, know the same people, and have someone who's personally invested in their success." That commitment extends beyond the operating room. Recently, MAPS partnered with one of its local dental practices to donate anesthesia services for a patient receiving life-changing dental implants, something Roberson says reflects the kind of community partnerships the company hopes to continue building throughout Kansas City. The company is equally intentional about the people it hires. "Clinical excellence is expected," Roberson says. "That's the entry

requirement, not the decision." Instead, MAPS looks for clinicians who demonstrate humility, integrity, teamwork, and the confidence to speak up if something doesn't seem right. For Roberson, one of the most rewarding moments since launching MAPS has been watching experienced anesthesia professionals choose to join the company because they believe in its mission. If there's one message both Roberson and Tafreshi hope patients remember, it's to be informed and ask questions. "Ask who is delivering your anesthesia," Roberson says. "Ask how current and proficient that person is. Those two questions tell you almost everything." Because at the end of the day, Tafreshi says, every patient deserves the same level of preparation, expertise, and attention, regardless of where they're receiving care. "Every family who trusts us with their care deserves our very best," he says. "That's the standard we hold ourselves to every single day." Instagram: @mapshealthkc Website: mapshealthkc.com

How Cait Dolly Designs Conf idence Through St yle ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

50

Some people decorate homes. Others build wardrobes. Cait Dolly believes both are really about the same thing. "I like to say that I design confidence," Cait explains. "Sometimes it's hanging in your closet, and sometimes it's hanging on your walls."

“I like to think of timeless pieces as the foundation and trends as the accessories.” As the creative force behind Dolly Studios, Cait has built a business that blends interior styling, personal styling, and commissioned artwork into one philosophy: helping people create lives that feel as good as they look. For Cait, luxury has little to do with price tags. "It's waking up every day surrounded by pieces that support the life you're building and remind you who you are," she says. "The world spends a lot of time telling us who we should be. Design gives us the opportunity to take ownership of that narrative." That belief shapes every client relationship. Whether she's refreshing a closet or redesigning a home, the questions remain the same. "What inspires you? How do you spend your time? What do you want more of in your life?" Cait asks. "When we answer those questions honestly, beautiful design naturally follows."

Rather than focusing on what a client wants a room or wardrobe to look like, she begins somewhere deeper. "I ask people how they want to feel," she says. "Maybe they want to feel calm after a stressful workday, more confident, more creative, or more playful. That emotional answer becomes our roadmap." It is a refreshing perspective in a world that can be driven by trends and endless scrolling. "Style is one of the most personal forms of self-care," Cait says. "As we move through careers, parenthood, relationships, and life's many seasons, it's easy to lose ourselves in all the roles we play. Style quietly reminds us that underneath every title, we're still individuals who deserve to feel confident, beautiful, and at home in our own lives."

She believes that many people have simply accepted living with closets full of clothes they never wear or homes that no longer reflect who they are. "I don't think that's just a wardrobe problem," she says. "I think it's a confidence problem." Instead of encouraging clients to buy more, Cait often encourages them to buy less. "My goal isn't to help someone own more," she says. "It's to help them love what they already have and thoughtfully build from there." That philosophy extends beyond fashion and into every room she designs. She sees personality in everything from lighting and artwork to fabrics and furniture. "I think every design element has a personality," Cait says. "Confidence might look like a sculptural light fixture or an oversized piece of artwork. Comfort is warm lighting and furniture that makes you never want to leave. Calm is thoughtful simplicity and giving your eyes room to rest." Original artwork has become one of the most meaningful parts of her work. When creating commissioned paintings, she doesn't begin with matching colors to a sofa. "I ask, 'How do you want to feel every time you look at it?'" she says. "That answer guides everything." Cait's playful personality is woven throughout Dolly Studios. She affectionately refers to her interior projects as her "dollhouses" and her styling clients as her "dolls," a nickname that feels perfectly fitting for someone who spent childhood rearranging bedrooms and dressing Barbies for hours. "I take my work incredibly seriously," she says, "but I also believe creativity should be joyful." Her advice for anyone feeling overwhelmed by decorating or fashion choices is surprisingly simple. "Start by removing something," she says. "Declutter one surface. Donate five pieces of clothing you never reach for. Sometimes clarity doesn't come from adding more. It comes from editing well." While she enjoys incorporating trends, Cait believes timeless style always begins with a strong foundation. "I like to think of timeless pieces as the foundation and trends as the accessories," she says. "The finishing touches get to have a little more fun."

“As we move through careers, parenthood, relationships, and life’s many seasons, it’s easy to lose ourselves in all the roles we play. Style quietly reminds us that underneath every title, we’re still individuals who deserve to feel confident, beautiful, and at home in our own lives.” For Cait, the greatest reward isn't revealing a finished room or a perfectly curated closet. It's watching clients discover a new level of confidence. "I've watched clients stand a little taller, start hosting friends again because they finally love their home, apply for promotions, or simply smile when they open their closet in the morning," she says. "Those moments remind me this work has never really been about clothes or furniture. It's about creating ways to truly enjoy our lives." If there's one message she hopes people carry with them, it's that creating beauty isn't about perfection. It's about permission. "I hope people stop thinking beauty is

superficial," Cait says. "Whether it's wearing the bold blazer, buying the artwork, or finally hosting the dinner party, I hope people realize they're worthy of creating a life that feels beautiful. The most luxurious thing you'll ever own isn't just hanging in your closet or sitting in your living room. It's the confidence to create a life that genuinely feels incredible." Tailleur on Main BRINGS A TASTE OF PARIS TO THE HEART OF KANSAS CITY

There are restaurants where you go for a great meal, and then there are restaurants that make you want to linger just a little longer. Tailleur on Main is the kind of place that invites you to slow down, savor every bite, and enjoy the moment. From the instant you step through the antique double doors, guests no longer feel like they are in Kansas City. Candlelight flickers across marble tables, french music fills the dining room and rich colors, antique furnishings, and brass accents create the feeling of discovering a charming neighborhood bistro in Paris. Owner Heather White says every detail was chosen with intention. "I like to think we're in the people business first, and the food business second," White says. "People come to Tailleur to celebrate life's moments, whether it's an anniversary, a first date, or simply a Tuesday evening. While they may remember that first bite, I hope what stays with them is how they felt while they were dining."

That philosophy is woven into every corner of the restaurant. The well-loved leather menus, vintage glassware, fresh flowers, polished silverware, and attentive hospitality all work together to create an experience that feels both elegant and welcoming. White found much of her inspiration while traveling through Paris, where she became fascinated not only by the food but also by the effortless beauty of neighborhood cafés, boutique hotels, and bistros. "Paris has an incredible ability to make luxury feel effortless," she says. "Nothing feels over-designed, yet every detail has purpose." Rather than recreate a formal French restaurant, White wanted Tailleur to capture the warmth and authenticity of the places locals return to again and again. The result is a dining room that feels collected over time, layered with antiques and timeless touches that make guests feel instantly at home. The menu follows that same philosophy. French cooking techniques serve as the foundation, but every dish is approachable and designed to be enjoyed by everyone. "Whether someone orders Steak Frites or tries something new or more adventurous, each dish should feel comforting and approachable," White says. The thoughtfully curated wine and cocktail program completes the experience. White and her team have assembled a list featuring both familiar favorites and boutique wineries that encourage guests to discover something new. For those looking for a memorable pairing, she recommends the duck with Patricia Green Pinot Noir or the salmon with a Côtes du Rhône Blanc Vidal-Fleury.

“I wanted a destination for our guests to build an evening around,” she says. “Maybe they start with a cocktail at Cheval, have dinner at Tailleur and finish the night with dessert and one last glass of wine on our garden patio.”

Tailleur's location on Main Street has also become part of its charm. White saw the historic neighborhood as the perfect setting for a restaurant designed to be more than just a dinner reservation. "I wanted a destination for our guests to build an evening around," she says. "Maybe they start with a cocktail at Cheval, have dinner at Tailleur and finish the night with dessert and one last glass of wine on our garden patio." For first-time visitors, White already has the perfect evening planned. Begin with a glass of Champagne, share the Herb Broth Mussels and Pomme Frites, enjoy the Coq au Vin with a glass of French Cabernet Franc, then finish with one of the house-made desserts and the Café au Lait cocktail. Her final piece of advice? "Stay for another glass of wine. That's when the best evenings happen." In a city filled with outstanding restaurants, Tailleur has carved out a place that feels truly unique. It's not simply about exceptional French-inspired cuisine or beautifully crafted cocktails. It's about creating memories around the table. "I hope they remember how they felt," White says. "People rarely remember every ingredient in a dish, but they always remember how a place made them feel." At Tailleur, that feeling is one you'll want to experience again and again.

A BLEND OF FASHION AND FUNCTION 64

FASH ION F OR WA R D | S HOPPIN G

A purse does more than hold your phone, keys, and wallet. It quietly pulls an outfit together while also handling the practical side of everyday life. That balance between fashion and function is what makes a great purse feel less like an accessory and more like part of a personal style. Some bags are designed to stand out. A bold color, metallic detail, or structured shape can instantly become the statement piece of an outfit. Even with simple jeans and a white T-shirt, the right purse adds personality and intention. Other times, a purse works best when it blends in. Neutral tones, soft leather, or minimalist designs create a polished look without stealing attention from the rest of the outfit. These subtle bags are often the ones people reach for every day because they work with almost everything.

FASHION TRENDS MAY CHANGE EVERY SEASON, BUT THE ROLE OF A PURSE STAYS THE SAME.

Of course, style only goes so far if a purse is impractical. The best bags are the ones that fit real life. A roomy tote helps someone move from work meetings to errands without missing a beat. Even a small clutch has a purpose for evenings out when only the essentials matter. Fashion trends may change every season, but the role of a purse stays the same. It adapts while still serving a purpose. That’s why people often invest in bags they truly love. A good purse is dependable, but it also can make a fashion statement. In many ways, a purse is one of the few accessories that people use every single day. It carries necessities, reflects personal style, and can completely change the tone of an outfit. Whether bold and eye-catching or simple and understated, a purse proves that fashion and function can exist beautifully together. S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . For many people, needlepoint may bring to mind a traditional craft passed down through generations. But at KC Needlepoint, this timeless hobby has found a fresh new energy. Located in Kansas City’s Waldo neighborhood, the shop has become a welcoming destination where beginners, longtime stitchers, and anyone curious about picking up a needle and thread can find inspiration, creativity, and community. Owned by Polly Kramer and Carol Crowe, KC Needlepoint is a full-service needlepoint shop offering thousands of canvases, threads, accessories, finishing services, classes, and events. But the experience goes far beyond the supplies on the shelves. “KC Needlepoint is dedicated to making needlepoint approachable, inspiring, and enjoyable for everyone,” Polly and Carol say. “Whether someone is picking up a needle for the very first time or has been stitching for decades, we strive to create a space where every stitcher feels welcome.” That welcoming spirit is what makes the shop such a unique part of Kansas City’s creative community. For Polly and Carol, needlepoint is not simply about completing a project. It is about taking time to slow down, reconnect with yourself, and enjoy the process of creating something by hand.

“People are craving hobbies and experiences that encourage them to slow down, stay present, and reconnect with themselves and others,” they explain. “In a world where so much of our time is spent on screens and moving at a fast pace, needlepoint offers something refreshingly different.” Over the past several years, needlepoint has experienced a major resurgence, especially among younger generations. While the techniques remain rooted in tradition, today’s designs feel modern, colorful, and personal. Stitchers can create everything from personalized ornaments and heirloom stockings to pillows, clutches, and keepsakes that reflect their individual style. Social media has also played a major role in introducing needlepoint to a new audience. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok have helped showcase the creativity behind the craft and connected stitchers around the world. “Social media has completely transformed the way people discover and experience needlepoint,” Polly and Carol say. “It has created a space where stitchers can share their projects, inspire one another, celebrate milestones, and encourage each other.” One of the most exciting parts of the craft today is seeing how differently each person approaches the same design. “Twenty people could purchase the exact same canvas, and each person could bring something completely different to it through their thread choices, stitches, finishing decisions, and personal style,” they share. For those who have always been curious about needlepoint but are hesitant to begin, KC Needlepoint offers an approachable place to start. Many new stitchers walk through the door believing they are not creative enough or do not have the skills needed to create something beautiful. The team is quick to change that perspective. “You don’t have to consider yourself a creative person to enjoy needlepoint,” Polly and Carol say. “You just have to be curious and willing to try something new.” Beginner kits and classes help take away the uncertainty by providing everything needed to get started, while the shop’s team is always available to answer questions, help choose a first project, and guide customers through thread selection and techniques. “Needlepoint isn’t about being perfect, it’s about slowing down and enjoying the process,” they say. That process is part of what keeps so many people coming back. Beyond creating something beautiful, needlepoint offers a sense of calm and accomplishment. It creates space for quiet moments while also bringing people together through classes, stitch nights, and shared projects. Today’s most popular designs often reflect the personalities and experiences of the people creating them. Christmas ornaments and stockings remain favorites, becoming treasured family pieces that are passed down through generations. Other popular designs celebrate travel, pets, sports, books, food, and meaningful sayings. “It has been exciting to watch needlepoint evolve into such a personal form of creative expression,” Polly and

“PEOPLE ARE CRAVING hobbies and experiences THAT ENCOURAGE THEM TO SLOW DOWN, STAY PRESENT, AND reconnect with themselves AND OTHERS.” Carol say. “People are stitching projects that celebrate the people, places, and moments that matter most to them.” KC Needlepoint recently celebrated its 10-year anniversary, marking a decade of helping Kansas City discover the joy of stitching. As the craft continues to grow and evolve, the shop remains committed to honoring its history while embracing its future. “The most rewarding part has been sharing our passion for needlepoint and watching our community grow,” Polly and Carol say. “There is nothing more fulfilling than welcoming someone into the hobby for the very first time, seeing their confidence grow with each project, and watching them become part of this incredible community.” For anyone thinking about trying needlepoint for the first time, their advice is simple: start with curiosity and enjoy the journey.

“So many people come into our shop and tell us they aren’t creative, they aren’t crafty, or they’re worried they won’t do it right,” they say. “But needlepoint is a hobby that welcomes everyone. Every experienced stitcher started out as a beginner.” At KC Needlepoint, the finished piece is only part of the story. The true beauty is found in the moments created while stitching, the friendships formed along the way, and the memories woven into every project. “Needlepoint is about more than the canvas and threads in your hands,” Polly and Carol say. “It’s about the moments you create while stitching, the people you meet along the way, and the memories that become part of every finished piece.” Visit KC Needlepoint at 8050 Wornall Road in Kansas City, call 816-599-7331, email kcneedlepoint@gmail.com, or learn more at KC Needlepoint. INGREDIENTS: • • • • • •

1 bottle, standard size, of pinot grigio 2 1/2 cups fresh apple cider 1 cup club soda 1/2 cup ginger brandy 3 Honeycrisp apples, chopped 3 pears, chopped

DIRECTIONS: Combine all ingredients together and stir. Refrigerate for an hour or so (or longer) before serving. The drink can be enjoyed immediately, if desired, but the longer you let the ingredients sit and mix, the deeper the flavors will be. Giving it time to develop will make the drink more captivating and interesting.

NOTE: Regular brandy can be used, but ginger brandy gives it an extra kick of flavor.
