LIFESTYLE LETTER

October 2026 PUBLISHER

Nolan Williams | nolan.williams@citylifestyle.com

Welcome to our beloved Food + Drink issue! This edition is always special for many reasons, but primarily because of how food connects us and evokes profound memories within us. Naturally, we associate certain dishes with traditions, holidays, or monumental life experiences. Gathering around a table to share a meal with those we love invites conversation and allows us to slow down and reflect on all that is right in front of us - what a gift. Growing up, the change in seasons each year meant I’d get to start baking endless varieties of cookies with my grandmother. She had specific recipes for each holiday, and they all hold a sense of nostalgia for me to this day. She never worried about how messy the kitchen got, whether our clothes were covered in flour, or even if we ate the raw batter. What mattered most to her was spending time with us. My grandmother never expected perfection from a single cookie; instead, she always praised our efforts and thanked us for slowing down long enough to enjoy quality time with her. This love of baking that she instilled in me has truly stayed with me, and I still treasure the time I get to slow down in the kitchen and create something delicious. Isn’t it remarkable to consider all that food gives us? Time, memories, laughter, experiences, the ability to learn and create, and so much more. I’d imagine that many of you also hold memories like these centered around food, a family member’s kitchen, or a favorite holiday. Living in Johnson County offers unique and incredible dining options everywhere you turn: barbecue, pizza, craft cocktails, locally roasted coffee, and so much more. As I reflect on everything featured in this issue and the memories that gathering around a table holds for me, I am encouraged to slow down and cherish the seemingly mundane practice of community and sharing food with one another. What a blessing it is to have food on our tables and to share a meal with those who deeply care about us. As you flip through these pages, my hope is that you are filled with that same gratitude. Practice slowing down, share a meal with the people who mean the most to you and maybe even take time to bake a few cookies with Grandma. 1 Corinthians 10:31: “So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”

Dispatch Pizza

From Tuscany to Kansas City ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

H OT SP OT | FO O D + BEVERAGE

Dispatch Pizza is hard to miss. Its art deco-style pizza truck brings a wood-fired oven to weddings, private parties, corporate events and gatherings across Kansas City, serving Neapolitan-style pizzas fresh from the fire. However, the business is about more than bringing pizza to an event. For owner Jeremy Long, Dispatch Pizza combines years spent working in the restaurant industry with experiences gathered while living in some of the world's great food cities, including Chicago, Los Angeles, Vancouver, Lake Tahoe and Tuscany. Long spent years exploring food and restaurant culture before eventually returning to Kansas City, the place he always expected to call home. “When I left KC in my early 20s, I did so with the intention of exploring and experiencing all the world had to offer, but in the back of my mind, always knowing I would come home to put down roots,” Long said. His time living in Barga, a small mountaintop town in Tuscany, had a particularly strong influence on how he thinks about food and the experience of sharing a meal. “Living in a tiny mountain town in Tuscany teaches you a few things,” Long said. “Mostly to slow down, to stop and smell the roses. To live and eat simply. To celebrate meals with friends or family as the event of the day.”

27

That philosophy carries over to Dispatch Pizza, both in the food and in the experience surrounding it. The pizzas are built around a simple approach to ingredients. Long points to the tomato sauce as one example. Made with San Marzano tomatoes from Naples and sea salt, it is intentionally uncomplicated. “If something tastes delicious, you have to let it sing,” he said. The dough receives just as much attention. Dispatch uses “00” flour from Naples and allows its dough to ferment for 72 hours. The longer process helps create a crust that is both crunchy and chewy without developing the sour flavor associated with sourdough. Long said the extra time is worth it. “We get that amazing texture without the sour flavor,” he said.

“If something tastes delicious, you have to let it sing.”

While the foundation of the menu is rooted in Italian tradition, Dispatch also makes room for Kansas City ingredients and flavors. Long works with local producers, including Messner Bee Farm and Burnt Finger BBQ , both of which are represented on the menu. The Bella Vita pizza includes whipped browned butter and ricotta, burrata, prosciutto and truffle, finished with local hot honey. Another pizza takes a distinctly Kansas City approach, combining tomato sauce, mozzarella, smoked chicken, marinated red onion, dill pickles and local barbecue sauce. “Both of these products are made right here in KC by KC families,” Long said. “I’m very proud to include them on our menu.”

29

Pizza has become an increasingly competitive part of Kansas City's food scene, Long said. While the city will always be known for barbecue, he believes local diners are looking for more variety and higher-quality options. “There’s a huge appetite for quality pizza here,” he said. “Kansas Citians are expecting more diversity when it comes to food options of all types, and pizza is no exception.” Dispatch has found its niche by combining the food with an event experience. The art deco-style truck arrives with a 1,000-degree wood-fired oven, turning pizza-making into part of the occasion. “Aesthetics matter in these moments,” Long said. “Our truck sets the stage.” Guests can watch as the pizzas bake, with the dough, sauce and cheese moving through the process before the finished pizza is topped, sliced and served. “We want every guest to have that magical fresh-out-of-the-oven pizza experience,” Long said. “We want them to be blown away by the flavors, textures and aromas of a world-class Neapolitan wood-fired pizza.”

30

H OT SP OT | FO O D + BEVERAGE

When Dispatch started four years ago, Long expected weddings to make up the majority of the business. While weddings remain an important part of what the company does, corporate events and private parties have grown significantly, along with repeat business. “I underestimated the amount of repeat business we would receive from these types of clients,” he said. That growth has been one of the biggest surprises for Long, who said he has been blown away by the response Dispatch has received from the Kansas City community. The business model has also allowed him to build a company while spending more time with his family than he believes would have been possible with a traditional restaurant. Long and his partner, Kelly, returned to Kansas City in 2020, raising their three children on the same streets where they grew up. “Time with the people

we love is the only asset that really matters,” Long said. For him, returning home has brought together both the personal and professional sides of his life. He found a way to combine his experience in the restaurant industry, his love of Italian food and his desire to build something in Kansas City. Looking ahead, Long hopes Dispatch continues to grow and perhaps eventually adds a retail option. But he also wants to protect the event experience that helped put the business on the map. “I hope people say that we have helped to elevate the pizza game in KC,” he said. “That we are the kind of pizza worth getting excited about.” After four years in business, Long remains grateful for every customer who has tried Dispatch Pizza, booked an event or simply noticed the truck out on the road. “We will see you out there,” he said. “Follow the flame.” For more information on Dispatch Pizza visit dispatchpizza.com.

THE BACKYARD Not long ago, an outdoor pizza oven in someone’s backyard was rare, and the kind of purchase that hinted at a serious devotion to entertaining. What was once a niche indulgence has become a fixture on patios and terraces across the country, and the appeal is easy to understand once you’ve stood next to one. These ovens climb past 900 degrees, hot enough to turn out a proper Neapolitan crust in under two minutes, with the same char and blistered edge you’d find at a well-regarded pizzeria. What’s driven the shift is accessibility without any real compromise on quality. The newer generation of countertop ovens, running on gas or wood pellets, has made that level of heat achievable without a masonry install or a small fortune. The result is

a dinner party that essentially hosts itself: guests gather around the oven the way they once gathered around a fire pit, the dough gets stretched and topped in full view, and the meal becomes entertainment rather than a meal quietly assembled in a kitchen. Part of the appeal of a pizza oven is how quickly it rewards experimentation. With a cook time measured in minutes rather than hours, there’s little downside to trying an unexpected topping or a pairing you wouldn’t normally think to combine. Fig and prosciutto, hot honey and pepperoni, nothing is really off limits once the oven is hot. That said, it helps to start from a solid foundation. Below are tried and true recipes that are guaranteed to be crowd pleasers no matter who’s on the guest list.

CLASSIC MARGHERITA Serves 2 to 3 | Makes one 12-inch pizza INGREDIENTS • • 1 ball pizza dough, • room temperature • 3 tablespoons tomato sauce • • • 4 to 5 ounces fresh

1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved A handful of fresh basil leaves Olive oil Flaky salt

mozzarella, torn into pieces INSTRUCTIONS 1. Stretch the dough into a round. 2. Spread the tomato sauce over the top, leaving the edge bare. 3. Scatter the cherry tomatoes over the sauce, then add the mozzarella in a few big clusters. 4. Bake until the crust is puffed and golden with dark spots. In an outdoor oven this takes about 90 seconds. In a home oven, bake at 500 degrees on a hot pizza stone for 8 to 10 minutes. 5. Top with fresh basil, a drizzle of olive oil, and a pinch of flaky salt.

INGREDIENTS • 1 ball pizza dough, • room temperature • • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced • • 1 tablespoon butter • • 1 teaspoon sugar • 1/2 pound Italian sausage, casing removed

3 tablespoons tomato sauce 1 cup shredded mozzarella Fresh parsley, chopped Salt, pepper, and a pinch of dried oregano

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Cook the onion low and slow in butter with the sugar and a pinch of salt for 30 to 40 minutes, until soft and deep golden. Set aside. 2. Brown the sausage in a skillet, breaking it into small pieces, then drain. 3. Stretch the dough, spread the sauce, then top with mozzarella, sausage, and the caramelized onion. 4. Bake until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbling. 5. Finish with parsley and a light dusting of oregano.

CHICKEN PESTO WITH SUN-DRIED TOMATO Serves 2 to 3 | Makes one 12-inch pizza INGREDIENTS • 1 ball pizza dough, room temperature • 1/3 cup basil pesto, plus extra for serving • 1 cup shredded mozzarella • 1 cup cooked chicken breast, diced

• 1/3 cup sun-dried tomatoes, chopped • Fresh parsley, chopped • Salt and pepper

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Stretch the dough and spread the pesto over the top in place of tomato sauce. 2. Top with mozzarella, chicken, and sun-dried tomatoes. 3. Bake until the cheese is melted and the crust is charred in spots. This one cooks a little faster since there’s no wet sauce, so keep an eye on it. 4. Top with parsley and serve with extra pesto on the side for dipping.

INGREDIENTS • 1 ball pizza dough, room temperature • 3 tablespoons tomato sauce • 3/4 cup shredded mozzarella • 1/2 red bell pepper, sliced into rings • 1/2 cup mushrooms, sliced

• • • • • •

1/4 red onion, thinly sliced A handful of baby spinach 1/2 cup cherry tomatoes, halved 2 tablespoons chopped olives Shaved parmesan Olive oil, salt, and pepper

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Stretch the dough and spread the sauce, leaving the edge bare. 2. Add the mozzarella, then top with the mushrooms, onion, and bell pepper. 3. Toss the spinach with a little olive oil, then scatter it on with the tomatoes and olives. 4. Bake until the crust is golden and the vegetables have softened. 5. Finish with shaved parmesan

LOADED VEGGIE Serves 2 to 3 | Makes one 12-inch pizza Whichever you make first, go easy on the toppings. A hot pizza oven cooks a pie in under two minutes, and a heavy pie won’t cook through in time. Keep it light and let the oven do the work.

Kate Smith Soirée MORE THAN MACARONS

Kate Smith did not set out to create just another bakery. When she opened Kate Smith Soirée, she wanted to create a place where people could enjoy well-made pastries in a space that felt fun and welcoming. Coming from a family of restaurateurs, she grew up seeing how food could bring people together. “I watched my parents’ restaurant become that space for so many people, and I always knew that food would be my way of connecting with people,” Smith said. Her first experience with a French macaron helped shape the business that would eventually become Kate Smith Soirée. After trying one in Paris, Smith was hooked. She loved the combination of the crisp shell, chewy center and flavorful filling. She was also drawn to the challenge of making them. “They look so simple, but they are incredibly technical and quite stubborn to make,” she said. “If there’s anything that motivates me, it’s a challenge.” That challenge turned into an obsession, and macarons became the foundation of the business. Today, Smith and her team continue to experiment with flavors, colors and presentation while sticking to traditional techniques. “We get to endlessly play with flavor, color and presentation while still respecting very traditional French technique,” she said. In the beginning, Smith's focus was largely on the product itself. She wanted to make the best macarons and pastries she could. As the business grew and she moved into her own brick-and-mortar space, her focus expanded. “We’re still a bakery at the core, but I think we’ve become a place where

people can come to celebrate life in all of its forms,” she said. That includes everything from a regular customer stopping in for coffee to tea parties, weddings and custom dessert displays. The bakery's pink interior and playful details are a big part of the experience, but Smith said she never wanted the space to feel exclusive or like customers needed a special reason to visit. “You can dress up and have a tea party, or you can walk in wearing leggings, grab a coffee and a pastry and you’ll be just as welcomed,” she said. For Smith, the work that goes into the pastries matters just as much as how they look. Making macarons requires plenty of recipe testing and attention to detail. Small changes in humidity, oven temperature or even the equipment being used can affect the final product. “Appearance matters, and we love the designing portion of the process because we want them to be beautiful, but I’ll choose flavor and texture over a ‘perfect’ looking macaron every time,” Smith said. “At the end of the day, people remember how something tasted.” The bakery also changes its offerings with the seasons. Fall is one of Smith's favorite times of year to create new menu items, with fresh fruit and warmer flavors providing plenty of inspiration. “This fall, we’ll lean quite a bit on comforting flavors that feature a fruit paired with warm spices,” she said. “You’ll see a lot of browned butter at the bakery, smell toasted nuts, and I’ll be clinging onto all of the seasonal fresh fruit I can get my hands on.” Tea parties have also become an important part of Kate Smith Soirée. Smith enjoys seeing customers slow down and spend time together over tea and pastries. “My favorite part is knowing that people are making memories in my bakery,” she said. That connection to people's lives has been one of the most meaningful parts of owning the business. Smith and her team have provided desserts for weddings, birthdays, graduations and other major celebrations, along with smaller moments that are personal in their own way. “Food has this incredible ability to attach itself to a memory,” she said.

“We’re still a bakery at the core, but I think we’ve become a place where people can come to celebrate life in all of its forms.”

Seven years into the business, Smith said one of the biggest surprises has been watching Kate Smith Soirée become something larger than her original vision. “Then one day you look around and you realize there is an entire team bringing that vision to life,” she said. The business has also found a home in Downtown Overland Park, where Smith said the sense of community has been stronger than she expected. The updated farmers market has brought new visitors to the area and introduced the bakery to more customers. “When Downtown OP is growing, all of the businesses here benefit from it,” Smith said. “We’re all collectively part of creating a destination people want to spend time in.” Behind the pink decor and pastries, Smith said there is a hardworking team that genuinely cares about what they do. And while the business continues to grow, the goal remains simple. “I genuinely hope that they leave a little happier than when they walked in,” she said. “If someone leaves feeling like their day just got a little better, we’ve done our job.” For more information visit katesmithsoiree.com.

The Amber Hour BOURBON, THREE WAYS Bourbon carries a certain mystique: dim lighting, hushed tones, a vocabulary all its own. Cut through it and here's what you'll actually find: a spirit that does more with three ingredients than most bottles manage with ten. Shaken with lemon and honey, it goes bright. Stirred with bitters over one good cube, it turns deep and unhurried. Add vermouth and a proper cherry, and you've got the drink that's been quietly holding up hotel bars for a century. One good bottle, a few minutes, a comfortable chair. Everything else is just details.

48

H AP PY H OU R | FO O D + BE VE RAGE

ONE BOTTLE, THREE DRINKS The Thyme-Honey Smash The easiest pour if you're new to bourbon INGREDIENTS: • 2 oz bourbon • ¾ oz freshly squeezed lemon juice • ½ oz honey syrup (equal parts honey and warm water) • 3–4 fresh thyme sprigs, plus one to garnish • Large ice sphere or cube To make: Press the thyme gently in the bottom of a shaker (enough to wake up the oils, not enough to shred it). Add bourbon, lemon, honey syrup, and ice. Shake hard, strain over a large ice sphere, and finish with a thyme sprig and a strip of lemon peel. Honey syrup keeps for two weeks in the fridge and improves nearly every whiskey drink it touches.

The Old Fashioned Four ingredients. That's the drink. INGREDIENTS: • 2 oz bourbon • ¼ oz demerara or simple syrup • 2–3 dashes aromatic bitters • Large ice cube • Orange peel, to garnish To make: Stir bourbon, syrup, and bitters with ice for a full 30 seconds (longer than feels reasonable — the dilution is part of the recipe). Strain over one large cube. Pinch the orange peel skin-side down over the drink so the oils mist across the surface, run it around the rim, and drop it in. Demerara syrup, two parts raw sugar to one part water, brings a toffee depth that plain sugar can't reach. Classic: orange peel only. Dressed up: add a brandied cherry alongside the peel for a little sweetness and color.

The Manhattan The drink that built a century of hotel bars. INGREDIENTS: • 2 oz bourbon • 1 oz sweet vermouth • 2 dashes aromatic bitters • Cocktail cherry, to garnish To make: Stir everything with plenty of ice until the mixing glass frosts over, then strain into a chilled coupe. Garnish with a real cocktail cherry (dark, rich, worth every penny of the jar). Park the coupe in the freezer while you stir. A warm glass undoes thirty seconds of careful work in about a minute.

BOURBON GOES INTO THE BARREL CLEAR AS WATER. EVERY BIT OF THAT AMBER COMES FROM THE WOOD. CONTINUED > OCTOB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/J OH N S O N C O UN T Y

Speak Bourbon Like You Mean It THE WHISKEY AISLE READS LIKE A SECRET HANDSHAKE. HERE'S THE QUICK TRANSLATION. • Wheated: softer, sweeter, leans toward baked goods. • High-Rye: more pepper, more spice, more backbone. • Single Barrel: one barrel, one personality, quirks included. • Bottled-in-Bond: one distillery, four years minimum, 100 proof. • Finished: aged a second time in port, sherry, or rum casks.

UNION HORSE DISTILLING CO.

THE SPIR IT OF UNION HORSE

“ W E WA N T PEOPLE TO FEEL A CONNECTION TO UNION HORSE, O U R FA M I LY A N D THE K A NSAS CITY C O M M U N I T Y.”

What started as a family conversation about opening a brewery eventually led to something different: a craft whiskey distillery. The idea for Union Horse Distilling Co. began taking shape after the family visited a craft distillery while traveling. Seeing the process firsthand sparked an interest that would eventually bring the family together to build a distillery in Lenexa. “At the time, craft distilling was still relatively young in the Midwest, and we saw an opportunity to do something distinctive right here at home,” the family said. Union Horse was founded in 2010 with a commitment to making its spirits from start to finish. As a grain-to-glass distillery, the process happens in-house, from milling and mashing to fermentation, distillation, barreling and bottling. “Being grain-to-glass gives us an incredible amount of control over the character and quality of our whiskey,” the family said. “We’re able to make decisions throughout the process based on what we’re tasting and experiencing rather than simply following a formula.” The Midwest also plays a role in what ends up in the bottle. Union Horse uses Midwestsourced grains, while Kansas City’s hot summers, cold winters and changing temperatures influence the aging process inside the barrels. The family has spent more than a decade building Union Horse while remaining independently owned and rooted in Kansas City. “One of the biggest challenges has simply been having the patience and persistence that building a whiskey distillery requires,” they said. “There aren’t many shortcuts in this business.” Today, visitors can experience the distillery through tours, tastings, cocktails and monthly Distillery Socials featuring whiskey flights, local food and time with the Union Horse team. “We want people to experience Union Horse beyond what’s in the bottle,” they said. “More than anything, we want people to feel a connection to Union Horse, our family and the Kansas City community we’re proud to call home.” OCTOB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . BEHIND THE LABEL

Before someone takes their first sip of a beer, they usually see the label first. At Martin City Brewing Company, the artwork on the can is part of the larger process of bringing a new beer to life. But according to owner Matt Moore, the art does not typically come first.

“The labels also offer an opportunity to connect the beer to the identity of Martin City Brewing Company and the community it calls home.” “The beer usually drives the label or the process,” Moore said. “We don’t have a name and a label until we are putting the taste profile of the beer together and spitballing names and artwork.” That means the creative process often develops alongside the beer itself. As the team works through flavors and the personality of a new product, ideas for names and visuals begin to take shape. The labels also offer an opportunity to connect the beer to the identity of Martin City Brewing Company and the community it calls home.

“We try to bring the identity of our restaurants into beers always,” Moore said. One example is Fountain City Hefe, a beer with a label that makes its Kansas City connection clear. “Our Fountain City Hefe has the fountains incorporated into the label, and it’s fully KC,” Moore said. The artwork behind a beer label may be small enough to fit in someone's hand, but Moore sees it as an important part of the overall product. Before a customer knows anything about the flavor or ingredients, the can is already making an impression. CONTINUED >

What does he want people to notice when they pick one up? “Quality, quality, quality and care,” Moore said. Some labels carry a particularly personal connection to the company's history. Abbey, the brewery's first beer label, was designed by Moore's brother-in-law, Ryan Lamfers. “It was our first beer label,” Moore said. “It is as interesting and neat a label as you’ll find.” Lamfers, who is now the head of the art department at West Georgia University, is also a local connection. He graduated from Lee's Summit High School and was there during the early days of the business. “He spent time in the trenches with us as we were getting our feet underneath us,” Moore said. That history gives the Abbey label a significance beyond its artwork. It represents a time when Martin City Brewing Company was still finding its footing and building the business into what it is today. As the beer industry continues to change, Moore believes the role of art and design could become even more important. He said fewer beers are now being developed simply based on what the market wants, which could allow more time and energy to go into the creative side of the process. “I do believe the labels will have more time and energy put into them once again,” he said. For a brewery, the label has to do more than look good. It becomes part of how people recognize the product and connect it to the company behind it. For Martin City Brewing Company, that connection comes back to the same values that guide its food and beverage offerings. “We are a hometown company that’s been bootstrapped and always trying to do the best by our family, our fans,” Moore said. That hometown approach is reflected in the people who have helped build the company, the Kansas City references that find their way into the products and the attention given to what goes into each beer. For Moore, the goal is not simply to create something that looks good on a shelf. The label is another part of the experience and another opportunity to show the care behind the product.

“We care as much or more than the next guy and will continue to push the boundaries of quality and creativity in all things food and beverage,” he said. From the first idea behind a new beer to the finished can in someone's hand, the process is a combination of flavor, creativity and identity. And while the beer may come first, the artwork gives it another way to tell its story. For more information and locations visit https://www.martincitybrewingcompany.com/.

RAISE A Glass IN THE Gardens A fall afternoon of local brews, seasonal bites and garden views at the Overland Park Arboretum. ARTICLE BY LAUREN POWERS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Fall colors, locally crafted drinks and an afternoon spent exploring the gardens come together at this year’s Botanical Brewfest, returning to the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens on Saturday, October 17. Presented by Friends of the Arboretum, the event invites guests to sample beverages from approximately 20 breweries and vendors while enjoying one of the area’s most scenic fall settings. This year, organizers are placing an even greater emphasis on the region’s local microbreweries. Among the anticipated participants is Big Grove Brewery, a recent addition to the Kansas City area. KC Bier Co. will also join the festivities as it prepares to open its new Lenexa location. Vine Street Brewing, Kansas City’s first Black-owned brewery, is another highlight of this year’s lineup. The late-afternoon event gives guests the opportunity to wander the Arboretum’s gardens, take in the changing leaves and enjoy unlimited beverage samples along the way. Each $65 admission includes a souvenir sampling glass, a wearable koozie necklace, WildSide pretzels, Jack’s Kettle Korn, Donutology donuts and event entertainment. Guests looking for something more substantial can purchase food from Don Rudy’s Quesabirrias KC and K&C Concessions. With quesabirrias, kettle corn and craft beer all in one place, showing up hungry may be the most strategic move of the day. Beyond offering a memorable fall outing, Botanical Brewfest raises funds for the gardens and grounds. Proceeds allow Friends of the Arboretum, a nonprofit fundraising arm of The Arts & Recreation Foundation of Overland Park, to support educational opportunities, conservation efforts, capital improvements and other enhancements throughout the Arboretum.

Tickets are limited and can be purchased at artsandrec-op.org. Friends of the Arboretum members receive $5 off admission. Botanical Brewfest is open only to guests ages 21 and older, and IDs will be checked at the entrance. The event will be held rain or shine as long as conditions remain safe. Parking at the Arboretum is free, and ridesharing is strongly encouraged. Guests who need to leave their vehicles overnight after enjoying the samples can do so without worrying about being towed. With local pours, seasonal snacks and the Arboretum’s fall landscape as its backdrop, Botanical Brewfest offers a distinctly Kansas City way to toast the season. Introducing Josh Wingerd Bringing a Baseball Mindset to Business Before Josh Wingerd was helping clients understand insurance coverage, he was chasing a very different goal. Growing up, baseball was everything to him. It was more than a sport. It was how he saw himself, and by high school, he knew he wanted to play professionally. He first proved himself at Pima Community College in Tucson, Arizona, then continued at the University of Kansas before signing with the St. Louis Cardinals organization. Playing professional baseball was, as Wingerd describes, surreal. “I was living out the dreams I had as a kid and getting to compete against the most talented baseball players in the world,” he said. His time in the game also taught him lessons he still applies every day as the owner of Farmers Insurance, Wingerd Agency L.L.C. Work ethic, adaptability and mental toughness all carried over from the baseball field into business. “If you are not 15 minutes early, you are late,” Wingerd said. “Do the hard things that no one else will do. What you do when no one is watching is what separates people.” Baseball also taught him how to handle situations that do not go as planned. As a pitcher, Wingerd learned to focus on what was directly in front of him rather than dwelling on the last play. “You have to live life one pitch at a time,” he said. “I use the motto W.I.N., What’s Important Now? Just handle the situation in front of me.”

That mindset influences the way he runs his agency. While Wingerd has to plan for the future, he encourages his staff to focus on what needs to be accomplished today. “I want us to be the best, and we talk about how to win the day every day,” he said. “The best ability is availability. You have to show up and be on time every day.” Wingerd did not move directly from professional baseball into insurance. After retiring from the game in 2000, he sold cars before moving into real estate and mortgages. He opened his insurance agency in 2024. “I never really saw myself selling insurance,” he said. “I do have a passion for helping people, so that is probably why I went from auto sales to homes, mortgages and insurance.” Owning a business was also important to him. Wingerd enjoys building something of his own, but he also sees the opportunity to create jobs and help others reach their goals as one of the most rewarding parts of agency ownership. At the center of his approach is education. Insurance can be complicated, and Wingerd believes an agent's job goes beyond simply finding a policy at a certain price. “My role as an agent is to explain coverages, what they do and why you need them,” he said. “Nobody likes to pay for insurance, but when they need it, they are glad they have it.” That is particularly important when it comes to comparing policies. is not necessarily the best one if it leaves gaps in coverage. “We have turned down business if someone wants a cheap policy with limited coverage,” he said. “We take the time to understand their situation and counsel them on the coverage needed and why.” He encourages customers to ask more than just how much a policy costs. Instead, he believes they should start by asking what coverage is appropriate for their specific situation. “No two

situations are the same, and the coverage should be different between them,” he said. Wingerd also wants clients to understand their policies before they have a claim. He recommends calling an agent before making decisions following an accident or damage to a home. “We have had clients start working on things prior to filing the claim, and now we can't prove what damage occurred that would have been covered versus man-made damage,” he said. Customer service is another major focus at Wingerd Agency. The office has staff members whose responsibility includes reaching out to clients when policies renew. Auto policies, for example, renew every six months, giving the agency an opportunity to regularly check in with customers. “We want them to feel like they are talking to people that truly care about them and their families,” Wingerd said. “Nobody is just a number to us.” That personal attention can also make a difference when something on a client's record does not look right. Wingerd said the agency has helped clients track down police reports when accidents were incorrectly listed as at-fault incidents. Outside of work, Wingerd's focus shifts to his family. “My family is everything,” he said. “I want to enjoy time with them doing what

they love to do. That is rewarding.” He is also proud of the team he has built at Wingerd Agency. “I can't do this on my own, and we have a tremendous team,” he said. “Our office culture is great.” There may not be a championship season in business, Wingerd said, but he still approaches each day with the same competitive mindset he brought to baseball. “It’s life, so you have to win every day,” he said. “It doesn't always happen, but that is the goal. There is no offseason.” For Wingerd, the lessons from baseball still apply. Be prepared. Adapt when things change. Focus on what is in front of you. And keep showing up. In baseball and in business, he said, the goal is the same: be ready for whatever comes next.

ummer was iconic, but your skin is filing a formal complaint.

Spending time in the sun may have given you the perfect glow, but as that tan fades, you’ll likely notice sun spots, melasma, dull, dehydrated skin, and new fine lines and wrinkles. Sun damage ages the skin quickly, and panic buying new “anti-aging” serums and creams won’t bring back collagen that’s already been lost.

At KC Health Solutions, we treat sun damage, aging, and other skin concerns at the source, not just on the surface. The real changes happen beneath the skin, where collagen and elastin begin to break down long before you see them in the mirror. By stimulating your body's natural collagen production with evidence-based treatments and pairing those treatments with a personalized home skincare routine, we help repair existing damage while slowing future aging. Healthy skin isn't created by one product or one treatment; it's built with the right plan. Tell us your goals, explore personalized treatment options, and connect with our team—all in one place.
