There is something so unifying and significant about being a woman. We resonate with one another because of the unique experiences that shape our lives. Women have a way of offering grace, providing a sense of comfort, leading well, managing a wide variety of roles, all while remaining strong in the midst of trials and life changes. I’ve been blessed to be raised by strong women and feel lucky to have incredible women in my life as both friends and family.

While this issue presents the opportunity to appreciate all women, the month of May offers a natural perspective to specifically appreciate the mothers in our lives. These women could be biological mothers, adoptive mothers, women that took on the role of nurturer and caregiver, a mentor, or even a coach. Consider the women in your life who have made a lasting impact on you. As I do the same, the common thread I see among these women is their authenticity and unconditional love. They’ve shown up for me with gentleness, grace, forgiveness, advice, comfort, hope and love.

I’ve heard the saying, “To have a village, we need to learn to be good villagers.”

I love this idea because it encourages me to pause and consider how I can show up for my village - for the women in my life who surround me and add immense joy to my days.

As we celebrate women this month, I hope it reminds us all to thank the women in our lives and to appreciate the contribution they’re making to this world.

Whatever role they’ve chosen to step into, may it be celebrated, honored and cherished. Proverbs 31:30 “Charm is deceptive, beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”

I began working at Refresh as a nurse in 2014 and purchased the business in late 2019 when the previous owner chose a different path. While I did not have a formal business background, I knew I had the passion and work ethic to grow something meaningful. The most rewarding part has been building a space where both clients and employees feel supported and valued.

What advice would you give to other women?

Passion does not mean loving every part of what you do. It means believing in something enough to push through the hardest days.

What does success look like today?

Success is seeing happy clients and employees and creating a positive, family-like environment. I am especially motivated by being able to provide opportunities for women to support themselves and their families.

What sets your business apart?

We have created a welcoming, non-judgmental space where everyone feels comfortable, safe, and like part of the family.

After nearly 15 years as a wedding photographer, I developed a deep love for creating meaningful, beautiful spaces. I noticed a gap in venues that felt both elevated and intimate, which inspired Hygge House. My husband has been an incredible partner throughout this journey, supporting every vision along the way. The most rewarding part has been watching people bring their celebrations to life in the space. It is an honor to be part of those moments.

What advice would you give to other women?

Start the business. There will never be a perfect time, and you do not need everything figured out. Trust the pull, start small, and evolve as you go.

What does success look like today?

Success means having freedom over my time, creativity, and presence with my family.

It is about building a life that feels intentional and fulfilling.

What sets your business apart?

I wanted to create something deeply personal where Indian flavors could be reimagined through a modern Midwestern lens without losing their essence. That space did not exist in Kansas City yet. The most rewarding part has been watching guests experience it for the first time and building something meaningful that sets an example for my son.

What advice would you give to other women?

Be honest about how hard it is. Passion alone will not carry you. Discipline will. Also, protect your energy. Not everyone needs access to what you are building.

What does success look like today?

Success is balance. It means running a respected and profitable business while being present at home. Taking care of my team, continuing to grow creatively, and making time for family all matter.

What sets your business apart?

We do not fit into a single category. It is Indianinspired, but also small plates, service-driven, and intentional in every detail.

What would you tell your younger self?

Stop rushing. Some things get better with time, and you are allowed to evolve.

I did not originally plan to own a business.

I fell in love with Pilates and its ability to help people feel stronger and more confident. When the opportunity came to take over the studio, it felt like a chance to build something meaningful.

The most rewarding part has been seeing clients transform physically and mentally, gaining confidence that carries into their everyday lives.

What advice would you give to other women?

Start before you feel ready. Confidence comes from doing. Also, surround yourself with people who support and challenge you. It makes all the difference.

What does success look like today?

Success is creating a welcoming and supportive space where clients and instructors grow together. It is about impact and sustainability, not just growth.

What sets your business apart?

We focus on quality and consistency in every class while maintaining a warm and personal environment for all experience levels.

Tarahumara in Kansas City, Kansas, a family-owned Mexican restaurant we love.

What would you tell your younger self?

Do not overthink. Just start. Trust the process and learn from every challenge.

What inspired you to start your business?

I’ve always been fascinated by human behavior and drawn to people’s stories. The most rewarding part is my clients. Even in hard seasons, they show how resilient and dynamic people can be. It’s a privilege to hold that space.

Go for it. Start before you feel ready because you may never feel fully ready. It’s never too late either. This is my second career. I started my practice in my mid 40s after raising my son and going back to school. You can always change your path.

A business that supports my life, not one that takes it over. It means working with clients I respect, having time with my son, and feeling proud of how I show up.

What sets your practice apart?

I work with men and high achievers who want deeper emotional connection. Many are successful professionally but want stronger relationships. I help bridge that gap. I’m trained in trauma-informed care and EMDR, and I bring a direct but compassionate approach. There’s also humor in the room. Growth does not have to feel heavy all the time.

Favorite Kansas City spots?

Rainy Day Books has always been special to me, and now I take my son there. And Rudy’s Tenampa Taqueria in Westport is a must. The atmosphere is vibrant and the food is incredible.

What would you tell your younger self?

You don’t have to have it all figured out. Trust your intuition, try things, and adjust along the way.

When Life Changes in an Instant Brie Bauer’s Story of Resilience

In the quiet and routine moments of life, we often find ourselves caught up in the small things, from the laundry to carpools, to daily schedules. For Brie Bauer, a nurse and mother of two, life was exactly that. However, as she has now learned, life can change in a second.

"I was going through life like everyone else, you know, just the same old things we complain about that aren’t a big deal in the grand scheme of things," Brie reflects. "Then all of a sudden it just changes in a second. That happens to everyone."

At 27 weeks pregnant with her third son, Brie felt a familiar spell of pregnancy fatigue.

Assuming it was a routine bug caught from her toddlers, she almost dismissed it. However, a persistent stiffness and her own medical intuition led her to visit urgent care just to be sure. Within hours, Brie was in the fight of her life. A silent Strep A infection had triggered sepsis, sending her body into shock.

To save her life and the life of her son, Beau, doctors performed an emergency C-section.

Beau arrived at just 2.6 pounds. He was a tiny fighter who, as Brie notes, likely saved her life by signaling his own distress.

While Beau stabilized, Brie’s journey took a harrowing turn. Her body tried to protect itself, but the cost of survival was high: the loss of all four limbs. Yet, as she woke from a ten-day coma, her first thoughts were not of what she had lost, but of those she loved. There was relief in knowing her mind was still sharp and her family was waiting for her. "I’m blessed with a new life, a new way of life, and a new view of life," she says. "And not a lot of people get that."

Brie’s time in the hospital was a grueling marathon that stretched from the initial crisis in February through her eventual release from inpatient rehab in June. Even after she emerged from her coma, her recovery remained a delicate, touch and go process marked by unexpected setbacks and nearly thirty surgeries. Yet, through the

months spent at both AdventHealth and the University of Kansas Health System, Brie was sustained by what she describes as incredible care.

She speaks with deep gratitude of the providers, nurses and therapists who became her lifelines, from the ICU nurse manager who moved mountains to get her the care she needed to the therapist whose simple, daily greeting of "Hey girl" became a vital sensory anchor. This compassionate support, combined with her own relentless spirit, turned a monthslong hospital stay into a foundation for the new life she is building today.

Brie’s survival was not just a matter of clinical intervention, but of her own willingness to speak up when her internal warning signals did not align with the charts. Her story highlights that while medical professionals bring years of essential training to the table, the patient is the only lifelong expert on their own body. "As a patient and as a provider, you’ve got to be aggressive and you’ve got to be annoying to get things done," Brie says, reflecting on the moments she had to push for her own care. "If you don’t feel right, if you just simply say that, that should spark providers to do something else."

This level of self-advocacy is not about challenging the expertise of a medical team; it is about acting as a necessary partner in a high-stakes environment where details can move quickly. Brie recognized that even the best systems have limitations, noting that the doctors and nurses are doing their best, but they are in charge of hundreds of patients. By trusting her intuition and her survival instinct, she bridged the gap between being a passive recipient of care and an active participant in her recovery. "I knew something was wrong," she recalls of the moment she called her own rapid response. "I looked at the nurse and said, ‘I’m calling it. If you don’t call it in five minutes, I’m calling them right now.’" Her journey serves as a reminder that advocating for yourself is a collaborative, lifesaving act that ensures the person behind the symptoms is never lost in the process.

The transition from being a nurse, which is a career defined by doing, to a patient needing constant care was a profound identity shift. Brie reflects that you build your identity through being a parent, and while she lost the physical part of that role, she is finding a new way now. For a long time, the physical limitations were a source of grief. The inability to pick up a crying baby or drive her older sons, Brooks and Barrett, to school felt like a barrier to motherhood. But Brie discovered that the doing is only a fraction of the role.

"You don’t have to have a more physical approach to it," Brie explains. "The hugging, the picking up, the drawing the tears. You don’t have to do that in order to be a mother or to be a parent." She realized that being a mother is truly about being the emotional north star. "I tell myself I have to be present. If I’m in bed depressed, I’m not present there. If they don’t see me, then they won’t know me." Today, she and her toddler, Beau, are learning together. Recently, she achieved a milestone that felt like a mountain when she picked up Beau by herself for the first time. "I picked him up for the very first time by myself just the other day. That's all I want, is to be able to do that."

Brie is candid about the fact that hope is not always a constant. During her darkest days in the hospital, she relied on borrowed hope from her family. A fellow survivor once shared a mantra that sustained her: "I’ll hold on to hope for you until you are able to recognize it." By her side throughout has been her husband, Reid. Though they eloped years ago without traditional vows, he has lived out the promise of sickness and health to a heroic

degree. While he handles the morning routines and the heavy lifting, Brie provides the happy thoughts at bedtime and the educational guidance that keeps their household thriving.

Brie’s journey has given her a new calling. As the founder of Brie’s Hope (Brieshope.org), she is turning her trauma into a blueprint for others. Her mission is focused on educating pregnant women about the dangers of sepsis and providing grants to families navigating the life-altering costs of limb loss. Using a stylus wrapped to her arm, she manages her foundation and connects with a global community of survivors.

"Adapt is such a simple word, but that’s how I am still here," Brie says. "It’s just adapting and not letting that trauma win." She is no longer the nurse she used to be, but she is a healer in a different sense. By sharing her story, she is teaching her sons and all of us that while we cannot always control what life hands us, we can always choose how we hold it. From Survival to Calling A Journey Toward Whole-Person Healing For this year’s women’s issue, we are honoring leaders who are not only building businesses but reshaping the way their communities experience care. For Jessica Bohlke, the path into healthcare was not linear. It was deeply personal, shaped through adversity, resilience, and a redefinition of what true healing looks like.

At just 20 years old, she was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive ovarian cancer. What followed was not only a battle for her health but a complete shift in how she viewed the body. Reflecting on that time, she says, “I remember sitting in appointments feeling overwhelmed,

craving clarity, and honestly just wanting someone to see me as a whole person, not just a diagnosis. That experience stayed with me.”

As she began exploring more holistic and integrative approaches, something changed. “I experienced a dramatic shift in my health. It opened my eyes to how powerful the body is when it’s supported well, especially at the level of the nervous system,” she explains. What began as curiosity became conviction, and eventually a calling. “I didn’t just want to be in healthcare. I wanted to change how people experience it.”

But her journey did not end with cancer. She also faced surgical menopause, infertility, and the emotional uncertainty of building her family through adoption. Each chapter added depth to her perspective and reinforced the same truth. Patients often feel unseen, unheard, and unprepared to advocate for themselves.

“They say, ‘Be who you needed.’ That has shaped everything for me,” she shares.

That belief is now the foundation of her practice. At Journey Chiropractic, care is rooted in meeting people exactly where they are. “I knew I wanted to build the kind of care I needed. Someone

who would meet me where I was, not where they expected me to be,” she says. “Someone who would understand my story, respect my goals, and help me take the next step forward.”

The name itself reflects that philosophy. “‘Journey’ is deeply personal. It came from being who I needed on my own journey,” she explains. “I didn’t need someone telling me where I should be. I needed someone willing to meet me exactly where I was.”

That mindset continues to shape the patient experience today.

“Healing is not linear. It is built through trust, consistency, and relationship.”

Much of her work focuses on supporting women, many of whom carry an invisible load of responsibility. “It’s no secret that women carry a lot,” she says. “What I see every day is that their nervous systems are overwhelmed.” Her approach begins at the root. “Our approach is to always begin with regulation of the nervous system. From that foundation, we build resilience and adaptability.”

Rather than chasing symptoms, she looks deeper. “The nervous system is the master control system of the body, so instead of chasing symptoms, I’m asking what is driving them,” she explains. “Healing becomes less about quick fixes and more about restoring function, building capacity, and creating long-term change.”

“Your health is your greatest asset. You are allowed to invest in feeling better, thinking clearer, and living more fully.”

Her own experience as a patient continues to shape how she shows up for others. “I understand what it feels like to be on the other side of the table,” she says. “I don’t rush people through that. I meet them in it first, and I help extract the deeper story.”

She is also passionate about challenging misconceptions around chiropractic care. “The biggest one is that chiropractic is for pain or symptoms, and that once the pain or symptoms are gone, you’re done,” she says. “Pain is often the last signal to show up, not the first problem to exist.” Instead, she emphasizes proactive care. “We are not just trying to get people out of discomfort. We are building bodies that are more resilient, more adaptable, and better equipped for the demands of their life.”

Outside of the clinic, she applies the same philosophy to her own life.

“At Journey, our tagline is ‘live in alignment.’ And for me, that goes far beyond spinal alignment,” she says. Through her Healthy CEO approach, she prioritizes routines, nervous system support, and protecting her energy. “You cannot build a high-level life in a low-functioning body.”

Looking ahead, her vision remains focused and intentional. “I want Journey to be a place where individuals and families feel known, supported, and empowered to take ownership of their health,” she shares.

“This is bigger than a singular practice. It’s a movement toward living in alignment.”

Her message to women is both simple and powerful. “You don’t have to wait for something to be wrong to start taking care of yourself,” she says. “Your health is your greatest asset. You are allowed to invest in feeling better, thinking clearer, and living more fully. That’s not a luxury.

That’s leadership.”

BROOKSIDE’S COZ Y BISTRO Tucked into the heart of Brookside, Cru Bistro & Bottles feels less like a new addition and more like a place that has always belonged. For owners Hannah Koenig and Avery Koenig, that sense of familiarity was the goal from the very beginning.

“Brookside is really where it all began,” Hannah says. “We both live and work in the neighborhood, and value the connection here.” That connection shaped their vision for a cozy, intimate bistro that feels lived in yet transporting, like a quiet corner you might discover on a European street.

Step inside Cru and that vision comes to life. The space is warm and inviting, intentionally free of screens, encouraging guests to settle in and stay awhile. Hannah describes it as a true “third place,” somewhere that naturally becomes part of daily life. “The place you go to celebrate milestones, but just as easily where you stop in for a glass of wine after work,” she says.

That balance between elevated and approachable defines the Cru experience. The wine program highlights small producers and family run wineries, while the menu focuses on seasonal ingredients and comforting, thoughtful dishes. “Our goal is always to meet people where they are, and then give them just a little bit more,” Hannah explains.

Regulars already have their favorites. The espresso martini has developed a loyal following, thanks in part to a fresh pulled shot from Broadway Roasting Company. The steak frites, a USDA Prime flat iron topped with truffle butter, is another standout, along with the mushroom croquettes, a nostalgic recipe from Avery’s family. For dessert, the burnt Basque cheesecake with goat cheese and blueberry coulis offers a rich but balanced finish.

Beyond the menu, Cru has carved out a niche with its popular Tuesday “Grl Dinner.” The prix fixe offering includes a drink, fries, salad, and charcuterie, designed to recreate the joy of sharing small bites with friends. “We love sharing a handful of random menu items and spending the evening laughing and catching up,” Hannah says. “This is our way of making that experience easy for everyone.”

On those nights, the dining room hums with energy. Tables fill with groups of friends connecting over food and conversation, creating what Hannah describes as an electric atmosphere. It is

a reflection of what Cru does best, bringing people together in a way that feels effortless and genuine.

For the Koenigs, the most rewarding part of building Cru has been watching those connections take shape. Familiar faces return again and again, and over time, guests and staff alike become part of a larger community.

When diners leave, Hannah hopes they carry that feeling with them. “Of course, we want them to enjoy a great meal and a lovely bottle of wine,” she says. “But more than that, we hope they feel present, relaxed, and that they’ve shared a moment worth savoring.”

In the heart of Martin City, Sidelines Custom Floral is more than a flower shop. Owner Karyn Brooke has built a business that blends artistry, emotion, and community in every arrangement.

“I find inspiration everywhere, but it always comes back to what feels natural, how things grow, how colors layer, and that slightly imperfect, organic look,” Karyn says. She draws from seasonal blooms, customer preferences, and interior design to create arrangements that feel fresh, unexpected, and full of personality.

Designing for different occasions requires attention to both feeling and space. “I always start with the feeling the client is going for. Every occasion has a different energy. Then I think through color, scale, and what will work best in the space,” she explains. Whether it is an intimate gathering or a large event, Karyn’s goal is to create arrangements that feel thoughtful, personal, and perfectly suited to the moment.

Current floral trends excite her, especially those embracing individuality and artistic expression.

“There is a lot of experimentation with color, movement, and more organic, less structured styles. At the same time, it is important to have a strong foundation. Finding the principles of design is what allows you to break the rules in a way that still feels intentional and beautiful.”

Karyn’s signature style leans toward a vegetative, natural look, with flowers grouped as they might grow in the wild. “I love creating pieces that feel organic, with movement and a sense of place, almost like they could have been gathered rather than arranged. That said, I also enjoy adding a refined, intentional touch so the design still feels elevated.”

She also shares practical advice for keeping flowers fresh at home. “Keep flowers out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources, refresh the water daily, remove foliage below the water line, and trim

stems on an angle. A little maintenance goes a long way in keeping arrangements looking fresh.”

For those creating bouquets themselves, Karyn emphasizes emotion over rules. “Start with the feeling you want to convey. Color plays a big role.

Soft, neutral tones feel calm and romantic, while brighter colors feel energetic and celebratory.

Texture and shape matter too. At the end of the day, flowers are a form of expression, so choosing something that feels authentic to the moment is what makes it meaningful.”

Flowers hold a unique power to communicate emotions. “They mark so many of life’s celebrations and even times of loss in a way that feels personal and universal. Their natural beauty and impermanence make the gesture intentional. Flowers let people say something meaningful without having to find the perfect words,” Karyn reflects.

Sidelines Custom Floral thrives on community connection. “Working in a flower shop naturally connects you to the community because you are part of people’s most meaningful moments. Over time, you build real relationships. It becomes much more than just flowers.”

Karyn’s advice to women launching creative businesses focuses on relationships. “Focus on your craft and create processes. This is a people-driven business. Real connection happens face-toface, through conversations and trust. As your business grows, building and managing a team becomes just as important.

Leadership takes patience, communication, and adaptability.”

Success, for Karyn, is defined by connection and fulfillment. “I define success as loving what I do and staying connected to my work, my team, and the people we serve. Creating designs that

are meaningful and building a life that feels balanced is what matters.” She takes pride in her team and the loyalty of long-time customers. “Our very first two customers are still with us, and the first employee I ever hired is still part of the team.”

Q: HOW HAS INFLUENCER MARKETING CHANGED SINCE YOU STARTED? A: When I started, brands didn’t know whether to take it seriously. Now it’s a legitimate line item in their marketing budgets — sometimes bigger than TV. Because what we’ve built is trust.

People trust a real recommendation from someone they follow far more than a commercial. There’s no question about it now.

Q: YOU’RE A MOM OF THREE RUNNING A FULL BRAND. WHAT DOES YOUR DAY ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE? A: I try to get up at five and not hit snooze — that first hour before the house wakes up is the most productive, most peaceful hour of my day. Then it’s all hands on deck with the kids and school drop-off.

After that I work — planning content, connecting with my team, editing. After pickup, the day shifts completely and it’s all about them.

I’ve learned to protect both halves fiercely, because both matter.

How to Set a Spring Table That Feels Effortless and Elevated

Gather in Style For a spring gathering, the table becomes more than a place to dine. It sets the tone for the entire experience. This season, a thoughtfully layered tablescape brings together color, texture, and personality in a way that feels both effortless and elevated.

At the center of this approach is Rebecca Wood, whose eye for detail and love of layering transforms everyday pieces into something memorable. Her process begins with a single point of inspiration. “I typically pick either a tablecloth or centerpiece item to build my table setting,” she says. “In this case, I used the flowers and berries from the tablecloth to build my menu and other table décor.”

Her design process is both creative and intentional. For this table, a bird-patterned tablecloth set the stage, but its central design required a lighter touch. Instead of a large centerpiece, she chose candlesticks with slender vases to preserve the pattern. Layered place settings combined vintage china with floral plates, while small footed dishes added height and interest.

Fresh strawberries appeared not only in the décor but also in the menu and garnishes, tying everything together.

Small details make a lasting impression.

“Personalization is always a nice touch,” Rebecca says. A simple place card or a single flower tucked into a napkin ring creates a moment that feels special for each guest.

Entertaining beautifully does not have to be expensive. Rebecca encourages hosts to use what they have, incorporate seasonal foods, and shop local markets for fresh flowers. “A little creativity goes a long way,” she notes.

By echoing those patterns with fresh berries and blooms, the table feels cohesive without being overly styled.

Balancing trends with timeless design is key to creating a look that lasts beyond one season. Rebecca leans on vintage and antique pieces as her foundation, then refreshes them with seasonal elements. “I love vintage and antique items, so those pieces are the base. Then I bring in touches of spring to make it feel new,” she explains. A simple change in linens or the addition of a vase filled with spring flowers can completely transform the same core pieces from winter to spring.

Natural elements play a starring role. “If I am hosting a meal or event, I always like to add fresh flowers,” she says. Whether it is a few stems in bud vases or a full arrangement of hydrangeas, the effect is immediate.

Bulb flowers and peonies, in particular, offer an easy way to capture the essence of spring.

Texture is another essential layer. At Diebolt's of Kansas City, where Rebecca works alongside owner Mary Carol Garrity, the philosophy centers on mixing rather than matching. “Linens are so key,” Rebecca says.

“We don’t like to be too matchy, but layering different fabrics and adding a ribbon or napkin ring brings in more texture and color.”

Above all, a well-designed table should feel as good as it looks. Planning for space, comfort, and functionality ensures guests can relax and enjoy the moment. “Know how many people you can host comfortably,” Rebecca advises. “It makes all the difference.”
