The Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora is a destination that transcends the typical travel itinerary. Through a blend of thoughtful amenities, intuitive service, and architectural grace, it has established itself as a premier retreat in the
South Pacific. There is a specific quietude in waking up in an overwater bungalow, watching the lagoon waters meet the jagged peaks of Mount Otemanu as the first light touches the Pacific.
The transition begins the moment a traveler lands at the airport. Guests are greeted with a traditional floral lei and escorted to a private boat shuttle for a quick fifteen minute transit. This arrival serves as a cinematic introduction to the island, defined by electric blue water and vibrant green landscapes. For those who know what they are looking for, a true weekend escape demands a rare alignment of conditions: minimal travel time, an immediate break from the rhythm of daily life, and an environment so fully realized it makes distance irrelevant. Margaritaville Hotel Kansas City, tucked into the western edge of the metro near The Legends, delivers on all three.
The guest rooms are well-considered and quietly immersive. Crisp linens, subtle tropical textures, and thoughtful coastal details create a space that feels pulled-together without being fussy. A private balcony overlooks the pool deck, and the bathrooms carry faint notes of coconut and sea salt, the kind of detail that earns quiet appreciation.
The resort-style property does not announce itself with the kind of coastal fanfare one might expect. The lobby leans into a breezy island aesthetic that feels thoughtfully curated. Soaring ceilings, sand-washed oak tones, and ocean-inspired art installations give the space an easy, seaside ambiance. Check-in is unhurried, handled by staff who are genuine and impressively accommodating.

In the evenings, LandShark Bar and Grill comes to life. The food matches the overall quality of the resort. Fish tacos are well-executed, and the margaritas are made with fresh lime and quality agave rather than a premix, a detail that matters. Later on, the 5 O'Clock Somewhere Bar draws a livelier crowd, with local live music and a warm, unhurried atmosphere that suits a late night without a schedule.
Mornings at Margaritaville mean Joe Merchant's Coffee and Provisions, where a well-pulled espresso on the patio makes a reasonable argument for prolonging checkout as long as possible. Joe Merchant’s Coffee and Provision also offers various breakfast options including bagels, muffins, protein shakes, and other fresh options.
Margaritaville Kansas City is a polished, well-run property that offers Johnson County residents a legitimate change of scenery without requiring a flight or a week of planning. Whether it becomes a regular escape or a one-time curiosity depends on the guest, but as a staycation option, it earns its place as a destination worth the trip.

In the heart of Hill Country lies the city of Fredericksburg. German culture and influence run deep in this history-rich place filled with exciting restaurants, charming shops, miles of vineyards and orchards, and a uniqueness only Hill Country can offer. It’s a popular destination for North Texans for a reason; if you’re looking to plan a weekend getaway with the girls, this is the spot.
If you’ve been to Fredericksburg before, you probably know how hard it is to choose where to dine, shop, and sample local wines. Each time I visit, I make an effort to try at least one new restaurant, browse different stores, and stop by wineries I haven’t visited, and yet, I still have a list full of places I want to experience. I’m hoping to provide you with a few new ideas, confirm spots you know to be amazing, and help you plan the ultimate weekend with friends.
How you end up spending your time in Fredericksburg depends on what you love to do. If you and your friends are outdoor enthusiasts, a hike around Enchanted Rock, the second-largest granite dome in the country, a visit to Wildseed Farms to wander the half-mile walking trail surrounding the display gardens, or driving out to Old Tunnel State Park in time to watch the Mexican free-tail bats take flight for the night should be at the top of your list.
If you prefer to enjoy the numerous wineries that line Highway 290, it’ll be hard to decide where to start. I recommend beginning your day at Grape Creek Vineyards, as it’s one of the most popular wineries in the region—not
to mention the gorgeous Tuscan-inspired estate! Afterwards, head next door to its sister winery, Heath Sparkling Wines, where you can partake in an incredible sparkling wine sampler paired with a variety of chef-prepared small bites. Take note that walk-ins are welcome, but reservations are recommended.
Another winery you don’t want to miss is Becker Vineyards, where you can stroll through lavender fields that bloom until the end of May, and taste award-winning wines like Vignoier, Chardonnay, and Sangiovese.
After a day appreciating the natural beauty of the region or sampling what the Wine Road 290 has to offer, make your way back into town for dinner.
If you want to go all out, make a reservation at Cabernet Grill, where an on-staff sommelier will pair your meal with Texas wines, many of them grown and made locally. Otto’s German Bistro is where you can get an authentic farm-to-table dining experience, and the newer Granite House Lounge serves up New Orleans-inspired fare and fantastic cocktails.
If your group desires something a little more laid-back, there’s West End Pizza, with outdoor seating and games, Burger Burger, and Das Peach Haus, the original location of Fischer & Wieser. Browse the store for marinades, sauces, and preserves, and then wander to the back, where, on weekends, you can buy a bottle of wine (from their vineyard) and a charcuterie board before you settle down in an Adirondack chair that overlooks a pond. Watch the sun go down and enjoy a slice of classic Fredericksburg with friends.
For night owls and music lovers, may I suggest an after-dinner stop at the Rockbox Theater? Located right around the corner from Main Street, it has a unique design that makes for incredible acoustics, and performances range from The Beatles and Elvis Presley tribute bands to ‘90s country covers and swing music.
Before you head home after a successful weekend, stop in one of the numerous shops along Main Street, like Hill Country Outfitters, Haberdashery, and Zertz. From there, head over to the Warehouse District, where you’ll find Carol Hicks Bolton Antiques, and my personal favorite, Blackchalk Home and Laundry.
Since it’s also peach season, be sure to stop at Wahl’s Peaches, Gold Orchards, Vogel Orchard, or Fischer & Weiser’s Tha Stand to stock up on freshly picked peaches before you make your way back to North Texas. A weekend getaway isn’t nearly enough time to get your fill of Fredericksburg, but with the right group of friends and the right plan, it surely is a great start.

One of three boats to traverse Canal du Midi, Enchanté is an “ultra-deluxe” converted barge with four cabins for up to eight passengers. Each suite on Enchanté features an ensuite bathroom. All suites are on the lower level, while the salon,

dining room, open kitchen and sun deck are above. The rooms are comfortable and quiet, the staff accommodating and the pace of the barge allows you to slow down and unwind. In fact, the barge moves slowly along the canal, giving passengers a chance to stroll along or ride one of the onboard bicycles.
THE BARGING EXPERIENCE
The barging experience is not anything like other cruises. With only eight passengers (although some boats have the capacity for 10 to 20 passengers), it provides a quiet escape.
Each day, you cruise slowly along the canal, going a total distance of about 50 miles over one week. The day’s leisurely routine begins with a sit-down breakfast and specially prepared dishes from the chef. You either cruise in the morning and take a short excursion in the afternoon, or vice versa.
Lunch is a gourmet 3-course meal paired with local wines. Dinner is a beautiful production with appetizers, main course, cheese course and dessert. Again, everything is paired with both a white and red wine.
EXCURSIONS ALONG THE WAY
Throughout the cruise, there are small stops along the way. This area of France is filled with gourmet delights and history, and you have a chance to explore both during your cruise.
You’ll visit l’Oulibo, a high-end olive oil producer growing Lucques olives. Enjoy a tasting of the oils and the olives, and pick up a few to take home. Another day, you’ll taste local balsamic vinegar. This is a real treat and a unique experience sampling a variety of flavors.
During the barge cruise, you’ll have a chance to visit three of what may be the most beautiful towns in France: Minerve, Lagrasse and Carcassonne. Lagrasse is an artisan town surrounding an 8th-century Benedictine Abbey. Minerve is home to a 12th-century Cathar fort with spectacular views. Carcassonne is a medieval fortified city with 52 watchtowers and portcullis.
There is also an excursion to Narbonne, once a Roman capital. There, you’ll have a chance to wander through Les Halles de Narbonne—the indoor food market—with the chef, picking out items for him to prepare once back onboard Enchanté.
