LIFESTYLE LETTER

Letter from the Publisher With the new year comes new beginnings. I’ve never been big on resolutions, but I like to think I live my life open to trying new things and seizing opportunities. After a career in medical device sales, hungry for a change and a deeper connection to the people who make this city home, I’m humbled to be the new publisher of City Lifestyle Johnson County. I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself to our readers and I hope in the years ahead to get to know many more of the businesses, families, and people that make Overland Park the thriving community it is today. My wife and I moved to Kansas City with a newborn baby five years ago, back to her childhood hometown. Now, years later, I couldn’t imagine raising our family anywhere else. I will admit, moving from across the state, I was more than a little biased, but at every turn, this city continues to exceed my expectations. From the genuine warmth and hospitality of the people, to the incredible food, family-friendly activities, and world-champion sports teams, I have embraced the spirit that makes Kansas City so special. So as we head into the new year, full of new beginnings and opportunities, I would encourage you to join me in an effort to explore new places, shops, and restaurants in Johnson County. Here’s to making 2024 a wonderful year!

5 Essential Tips for Staying Healthy During Cold & Flu Season As we approach the cold and flu season, it becomes increasingly important to prioritize our health and take preventive measures to stay well. One approach that has gained popularity in recent years is IV hydration. IV hydration, also known as intravenous hydration, offers a range of benefits that can help us recover faster from cold and flu symptoms while strengthening our immune system. Here are five key facts you should know about IV hydration.

IV Hydration for Improved Absorption IV hydration is also useful for individuals who have difficulty taking oral medications or have compromised digestive systems. Some people with cold and flu symptoms may struggle to swallow pills or keep down food and water due to throat pain, nausea, or a weak stomach. IV therapy helps ensure that necessary medications and fluids are delivered directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system. Rapid Relief from Symptoms One of the main reasons why IV hydration is effective for cold and flu is its ability to provide immediate relief and replenishment. When we are sick, our bodies often become dehydrated due to fever, sweating, and increased mucus production. Drinking fluids orally can take time to be absorbed and may not provide sufficient hydration. IV hydration, on the other hand, bypasses the digestive system and delivers fluids directly into the bloodstream. This allows for rapid absorption and re-hydration, providing fast relief from symptoms such as dry mouth, fatigue, and dizziness.

Boosting Immunity with Essential Nutrients In addition to hydration, IV therapy can also deliver essential vitamins and minerals that support our immune system’s fight against cold and flu viruses. Illness can deplete our nutrient stores as our bodies work hard to combat the infection. IV hydration can be tailored to include a blend of vital nutrients such as vitamin C, B-complex vitamins, zinc, and magnesium. These nutrients are known to strengthen immune function and aid in faster recovery from illness. Convenience and Safety It is crucial to emphasize that IV hydration should always be administered by qualified healthcare professionals. These professionals have the necessary expertise to assess your condition, customize the IV fluids and nutrients to your specific needs, and closely monitor your response to the therapy. The convenience of IV hydration is that qualified mobile nurses, nurse practitioners, and physicians can administer it in the safety of your own home. This minimizes your risk of exposure to crowded locations when you are in a weakened state, prioritizing your safety.

A Personalized Approach to Your Care Each individual’s health needs are unique, and IV hydration allows for customization to address specific requirements. Whether you have difficulty taking oral medications, struggle with dehydration, or need a boost to your immune system, IV therapy can be tailored accordingly. Seasoned healthcare professionals administering therapy should assess your condition, consider your medical history, and create a personalized plan to ensure optimal results.

Get to know Refresh Callie, Aesthetician

913.681.6200

Hayley, Aesthetic Device Specialist, Nurse Injector

I love offering Hydrafacial because it’s an incredible facial suitable for almost all skin types! First time clients love a Hydrafacial because of how drastically different their skin looks and feels immediately afterwards. Regular Hydrafacial clients love it because of how it maintains their skin health and pairs so well with the other targeted corrective treatments we do at Refresh such as IPL and Moxie! I love that this industry is booming right now both with client interest and ever changing scientific discoveries. We strive to offer the most up to date modalities, ideas, and techniques at Refresh and take pride in that!

“For instant gratification, fillers can provide beautiful results, but I really love the results that Morpheus 8 gives. People looking to address skin laxity should definitely consider adding it to their treatment regimen. My favorite thing about this industry is the constantly evolving technology and products that are brought to the market that give us the opportunity to address not only the face, but the full body. The education opportunities that are available to us as providers are wonderful tools to help us develop and grow as providers and share that with our clients.”

Emma, Nurse Injector

Mack, Nurse Injector

“My favorite service is all injectables, but if I had to choose just one, I would say fillers. I love that filler can make a beautiful impact for all of my clients no matter their age or aesthetic goals. Fillers can help restore the way clients may have looked 10 years ago and are also a beautiful way to help maintain the way my younger clients look today and simply slows the signs of aging as they start to occur. My favorite thing about the industry today is that as aesthetics have become more mainstream, it has become less taboo to invest in aesthetic services that allow you to feel and look your best! We all deserve to feel beautiful and I love that it is becoming “normal” for women to voice that and invest in themselves!”

“What I enjoy offering most are neuromodulators (aka Botox and Dysport). This treatment is not as black and white as everyone may think and can be administered throughout the face and body! “Tox” treatments are unique to each individual when taking personal goals, outcomes, and muscle strength into consideration. I love that you can balance asymmetries and keep a natural appearance on top of the glow it gives to the skin! You can see me for all things injectables, then see our amazing aestheticians for all things skincare and maintenance. Injectables can lead amazing outcomes, but taking a full approach leads to the whole package of a healthy, youthful appearance.”

Rachel, Aesthetician “What I find most fulfilling about my work is getting my clients’ results with little to no downtime. One of my favorite services to perform at the moment are chemical peels. They offer clients who are new to aesthetics, a way to dip their toes in the water and work their way up to more advanced treatments. Plus, I love that refresh has several options and can customize peels for each client! Taking care of your skin is a privilege and is one of the reasons I love being a part of the aesthetics industry. I get to be a part of your self care moment and I definitely don’t take that lightly.”

Ravyn, Manager, Marketing Coordinator “Having been with Refresh since 2016, I have had the chance to see the medspa space develop over the years and see Refresh grow along with it. My favorite part of this role is getting to watch my staff as they continually learn and grow in their talent, as people in their personal lives, and having the opportunity to support them every step of the way. Being the voice of Refresh through content creation on social media and with direct marketing has also allowed me to connect with our clients from that initial touch point to when they walk through our doors. Using social media as a tool to educate your clients and build trust has been key in maintaining relationships in and out of the office!”

Paige, Owner “My dream in creating Refresh was to curate a friendly, welcoming environment in which clients could come and feel comfortable expressing their aesthetic goals. We aim to help both women and men feel the best version of themselves by listening to their personal goals and using our expertise and advanced training to accomplish just that. You know if you’ve been to Refresh, that you are part of the family. We can’t wait to meet you!”

Sonni Elliott MD, owner and board-certified adult psychiatrist for Sunrise Psychiatry Inc., grew up in the Kansas City area and has always been interested in people, science and medicine. “I grew up around amazing physicians and saw their impact on others' physical and emotional lives. I attended Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans for undergraduate studies, graduating with honors in biology and a minor in chemistry,” she explained. “While attending medical school at Saint Louis University I fell in love with neurology, psychiatry and its interface with medicine. There I learned the intricacies of the mind, body and spirit and how behavior and emotion are oftentimes seen in various medical diagnoses.” She specialized in psychiatry and attended a fouryear residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago Hospital, where she honed her skills as a psychiatrist and discovered transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) at the time of FDA approval in 2008 as a safe treatment for Major Depressive Disorder. In 2010 she returned to Kansas City to work as an attending psychiatrist in various hospital systems and provided mental health treatment in several capacities in inpatient and outpatient settings. “I've used various modalities of treatment, including psychotherapy and psychiatric medications which have limitations in different situations. I have also been lucky enough to engage with patients who received TMS since 2010 and kept that treatment option in my mind to be able to offer to people in the future,” she continued. After a brief time away, she returned right before COVID hit and opened her own telemedicine practice. She developed her plan for a TMS clinic as COVID rates declined and the idea of a physical, psychiatric practice became appropriate.

She confirmed that TMS is a safe, noninvasive process that uses low level magnetic energy to target areas of the brain affected by Major Depressive Disorder. The magnetic field causes the brain to release more naturally occurring signals that help stabilize areas in the brain affected by depression. Treatments are approximately 18 minutes per day, M-F for approximately six weeks followed by a few additional treatments to decrease down. Response and recovery rates are higher than medications and TMS is covered by most commercial, Federal and state insurance. There is no sedation involved and people are able to go about their day without any wait time following treatments. “I hope to have a positive impact on people's lives. Throughout my training I've been lucky enough to learn that along with providing top notch care my goal is to treat every single person as I would want my family to be treated,” she expressed. “I have a strong team composed of extremely knowledgeable staff who walk interested persons through understanding TMS. This includes navigating insurance for TMS coverage, engaging with psychotherapists, medical care providers and executing the daily TMS treatments. I provide oversight and medical visits during the treatment course as well.” As she stated, these safe, nurturing, personal experiences help lift people up and target their depression in a way that makes them feel less impacted by the disease and hopefully find remission. Their office is conveniently located at College and Metcalf, 2 blocks south of I-435 and Metcalf, at 6900 College Blvd Ste 740 Overland Park, Ks 66211. For more information call 913-333-0448 or visit www.sunrisepsychkc.com.

LAMAR HUNT JR. EXPANDS KC’S IMPRESSIVE SPORTS TEAM ROSTER WITH HIS INVESTMENT IN THE KANSAS CITY MAVERICKS

ARTICLE BY MINDY HARGESHEIMER PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

You know by now Kansas City is a Midwest sports mecca, but little did you know that one of our best-kept secrets takes place at an indoor ice hockey arena and offers a wealth of unique crowd experiences inclusive for the whole family! Meet the Mavericks and their incredibly talented team on and off the ice.

AT H LE T E LIF E | SP ORTS + RECREATION

Believe it or not, the Mavericks have been a nationally competing team for 15 years, but it wasn’t until 4 or so years ago that many of us began hearing more about this hidden gem of a professional sports experience. And there’s good reason for that: For Lamar Hunt Jr, sports is a family business, so when the opportunity arose for him to purchase and spearhead our city’s professional hockey team, the timing could not have aligned better with Kansas City’s exceptional sports mania developing. Kansas City is getting thrust into the spotlight thanks to the Chiefs’ Superbowl wins, Travis Kelce, the NFL Draft, the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and the first women’s professional soccer stadium set to open in the spring. We are graced with a lot of sports teams for our market size. Lamar and his team of professionals, including son-in-law and Chief Operating Officer James Arkell, insert their family into everything they do. They are solely focused on bringing the best experience you can have with your family for a very reasonable price. But here’s the best part about adding the Mavericks into your family sports sphere; you don’t actually have to be a hockey fan to enjoy what you’re doing at the arena, because more than anything, it’s about the fan interaction that is incomparable. Everything that comes with a game day experience adds up quickly: This includes free and adjacent parking at Cable Dahmer Arena in Independence, the ticket prices are extremely reasonable, the food and craft beer scene are on point, the team store is plentiful, Mac, the mascot, is a total crowd pleaser, and

They are solely focused on bringing the best experience you can have with your family for a very reasonable price. the environment is clean and appropriate for kids of all ages. Plus, there are multiple opportunities for you to be involved as part of a game day experience. From Chucka-Puck competitions to on-ice “pickle” races, people also get pulled from the crowd to participate in the fun amidst the energizing soundtrack of overhead songs. CONTINUED >

The players love autographed signings for their fans. Many don’t realize the impressive profiles of our hockey players with many coming from Ivy League backgrounds and are heavily involved in connecting with schools and charitable organizations. They are an intentionally accessible team, which is huge in the eyes of their much younger fans. What also makes the hockey game experience unique is its intimate environment of 6000 seats, which means there’s a good seat no matter where you are. The enclosed ice rink offers a kind of chill in the air that hits differently than a fierce outdoor winter fandom experience. Coming from one of the most famous sports families in the world, Lamar Hunt Jr.’s passions lie not only in professional sports entrepreneurship, but in the ability to create a place heavily focused on family entertainment and giving back to the community. In every Mavericks hockey game, you’ll find a charitable component. Once a month there is a featured charitable partner, examples including January as military appreciation month and February spotlighting first responders. With it comes a specialty hockey jersey created for purchase with the proceeds going back to that charity.

Premium seating is a hidden gem for families to share. For the cost, there is nothing in town that competes with the all-in ticket price and amenities included in the Suite Packages and Ice Box Lounges. For example, when purchasing a suite, the birthday guy or gal gets to experience the ice firsthand during intermission. It’s part of the best-kept secret in the Mavericks game day offerings. One of the things that most people don’t realize is Kansas City is a wonderful hub not only for charitable giving, but for groups that are working to make the world more inclusive for individuals with special needs. James Arkell’s passion both stems from personal experience, as well as his understanding of the enormous opportunity this city has to give these children, like his son Michael, a seat at the table no matter where they are. With a brand new sensory room, families can find relief, relaxation, and excitement on game days. The room provides neurological tools and amenities that were designed intentionally alongside sponsor Children’s Mercy and by families with children with different levels of acuity. James and the team wanted to provide meaningful assistance, accessibility, and convenience for the simple needs parents want and need for their children. Another fun benefit? They also invested in adaptive sleds for the kids to also participate in skating on the ice! So join us in supporting and cheering on Kansas City’s professional hockey team and Proud ECHL affiliate of the Seattle Kraken and Coachella Valley Firebirds by reserving your family’s single or season tickets, and be sure to give someone in your life the Premium Seating experience! GROWING KANSAS CITY BUSINESS CONTINUES TO LEAD THE WAY IN HELPING ACHIEVE HEALTH AND WELLNESS GOALS

KC STRETCH ZONE 24

The New Year is filled with endless goals to become your healthiest self and a Kansas City woman-owned business continues to gain attention by pushing

in their day to day life with less pain and stiffness,” explained Harrick. As people age, their mobility is impacted and Harrick wanted to be

clients to reach new wellness heights. Stretch Zone in Overland Park was launched by Kelly Harrick in June of 2019 in Lenexa, Kansas. With her husband and business manager Scott by her side, the dynamic duo has expanded their business to six locations across the Kansas City metro. They say the program’s model is what makes it popular and appealing to the health community because it focuses on stretching and flexibility. Stretch Zones uses a team of experts to guide clients through a variety of stretches. Each thirty-minute session is designed to isolate, position, stabilize and work muscles properly and safely. "We do all the work, the clients get all the benefits of increased flexibility, decreased joint stiffness, improved mobility, and just a better functioning body that allows them to do the things

at the forefront of a program that had lasting gains. Harrick is a University Of Kansas graduate and has degrees in exercise science and a master's in physical therapy. With more than 30 years of experience under her belt, she understands the importance of hiring people with an academic background in the field. “A lot of our competitors will hire personal trainers or Yoga instructors, and there is nothing wrong with that, we just feel that a person who has gone to college to get a degree to focus on the human body has a better understanding and better knowledge on what your body is going through,” said Scott Harrick, business manager for Stretch Zone. Harricks says another reason why the team has to be selective is because practitioners are leading the client through the entire session.

"WE WORK WITH EACH INDIVIDUAL WHERE THEY ARE IN THEIR HEALTH AND WELLNESS JOURNEY."

With help from a patented strapping system, certified staff do the work for clients. With each visit, Harrick has seen her clients make improvements in mobility, stiffness and soreness. Some of the Harick’s favorite success stories, include helping a gentleman battling Multiple sclerosis walk his daughter down the aisle during her big day. Harrick says the Stretch Zone team worked with him for three months prior and when it was time for his daughter’s wedding, the gleaming father was able to stand proud and tall next to his daughter’s side. “Those are stories we hear every day, people who have been changing back pain for six months to two years start our program and with something our stretching program, that pain is relieved,” said Harrick, “our goal is not to diagnose anyone's problem, we work with each individual on what their goals are and where they are in their health and wellness journey." The Harrick’s recently took home Stretch Zone’s Franchisee of the Year Award and serve on the Franchise Advisory Council.
