LIFESTYLE LETTER

Letter from the Publisher Welcome to our Home issue. For over forty years I called Las Vegas home. Six months ago, I put new roots down in Kansas City. This is an exceptional place to live and to be your publisher. Not only have I adjusted to being a publisher in a new community, I am also adjusting to being an empty nester. I have two amazing young adult kids. Blake is twenty-six and Holly is twenty-two. Their age and independence afforded me the opportunity to accept this role which frankly, came as a pleasant surprise last summer. After accepting the role, I found a home here and in a matter of weeks for me and my dog Bentley. Over Thanksgiving, I was thrilled when my kids were able to take time from work and school to visit. We made great memories together including a Boulevard Brewing tour and the Plaza Christmas lighting ceremony. While I am a new resident discovering new people and places, your editor was born in Kansas City and comes from a large loving family. Angela has been the editor for nine years. She and her husband are raising their beautiful family here. Your editor utterly understands and loves our community and could not be more qualified to find and create our content every month. For a publisher, this is a huge blessing. Angela is a major factor for my relocation and I love working with her on behalf of our readers and our advertisers. This transition certainly makes me reflect on the definition of home. Naturally, home should be a haven and comfort zone. It is a place to live with family and pets and to enjoy with friends. Home is a place to build memories and can also help build future wealth. It is a place where we can truly be ourselves. I have learned that home may not be static. Like Angela, home may be the place we grew up, but like me, it can just as easily be where we feel settled and begin a new life full of possibilities. Last week my daughter called and asked if she can come stay with me after she graduates college. She is planning her final semester in Spain and needs to determine what is next from there. It made my heart happy that she may be spending time here. Kansas City is a beautiful place to call home! Whatever home means to you, may you see and feel all its blessings! Looking for a truly unique living space? GET TO KNOW BARNHOUSE CUSTOM HOMES IN THE NEW YEAR.

ARTICLE BY JUDY GOPPERT PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

Gardner Leaver, owner of Barnhouse Custom Homes, creates one-of-a-kind spaces. Barnhouse is a family-owned design + build company focused on new construction. They construct everything from traditional stick-built or modified timber frame homes to pre-engineered steel or pole barn structures.

12

O PE N H OU SE | HOM E + DE S I GN

Barnhouse harvests old barns from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and utilizes their timbers and barn board to provide an enriching contemporary-country feel in many of the homes they build. Modern amenities, luxury and charm are built into every board. “This feels like our most exciting year yet!” Gardner exclaims. “We are excited to have two upcoming projects partnering with local architects, Forward Design | Architecture and DRAW Architecture + Urban Design. One of those projects is a home on a private lake north of the city. It will have many modern Scandinavian features, with their goal being to bring the outside in as they sit lakeside.”

When asked more about the modern Scandinavian-style home, Gardner shared, “We are truly a custom home builder. We can build anything!” he smiles. “Yes, our niche is the modern farmhouse styles that showcase timber work, but we aren’t married to that. Those who search us out know that is our unique stamp. Our homes tell a story.” He sees maintenance free exterior materials trending, such as metal siding that doesn’t necessarily look like metal. Another continued trend is open floor plans. “This makes a home live larger than its footprint. Communal spaces, like the kitchen and living room, are where people gather and spend the majority of their time so they’re the centerpiece of the home. We try to accentuate those spaces.”

We pride ourselves on our honesty, communication and quality craftsmanship,” he reflects. “We pay extreme attention to detail.” He and his wife, Amy, and their three children (with a fourth on the way!) enjoy living in a spec home they built.

ARTICLE BY DANI LEON PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

Using art to elevate your home's style It’s no secret, maintaining a home adds value to the most-important investment people make, but many overlook how art can elevate and even express a unique standard of living. “When you include original art in your home you have a home unlike anyone else, so it really has the ability to make your home stand out and carry your personality,” said Megan Hoban with Prairiebrooke Art Gallery. The Overland Park based gallery is a leader in original art and knows first-hand how the right art piece can showcase a residential and commercial space. For more than 30 years, they’ve represented a wide variety of artists and have international, regional and local selections available at different price-points. “Once you buy your first piece of original art, you know the difference, and you truly learn to value the art that’s on your wall as part of the design and part of telling your story,” said Hoban.

Purchasing original art depends on the homeowner’s taste and what they are drawn to.While some may have luck finding a piece on their own, others go to art consultants who can narrow down pieces catered specifically to clients. From landscapes, portraits to abstract pieces; the options are endless, but once found a piece can be a staple in a home. “We really want our clients to love what they’re buying and enjoy it for years to come,” said Hoban. “We want that art piece to be something that’s valued in a home, not just something you want to switch out in a couple of years.” A perk some galleries including Prariebrook offer is the flexibility to bring pieces to homes, which not only helps with selection but also gives clients a better idea of a painting’s size. As for framing, it’s best to select a frame that compliments the original piece. Often sticking to a traditional frame is a safe bet, according to Hoban. Next is hanging, which can be a frustrating step, but a good rule of thumb is to have the center of the frame at 57 inches from the ground. Keep in mind, depending on what medium was used to create the piece, some paintings need to be placed in a wellshaded area or dim hallway so they don’t get washed out by the sun’s rays. Overall, Hoban says,, if you’re serious about buying art for your home it’s a process that takes time. “It’s not like going and buying a refrigerator,” explained Hoban. ”It’s something you need to have a passion about.” It takes dedication and commitment but once the piece is yours and it’s proudly displayed inside your home, entertainment and appeal will come by easier. “When people come to your home, your art makes your home look different from everyone else because you’ve gone through the effort to find an original piece of art rather than just pick something up from a big box store,” said Hoban. This is what JoLynn Tarantino and her family have created in their newly remodeled dreamy basement space. ARTICLE BY JUDY GOPPERT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

Custom features liven this basement, which boasts a moody look and lounge feel. This active family desired a space they would be proud of and wish to entertain in. It is welcoming to their four children and adults as well. “I envisioned the layout and finishes myself,” JoLynn says. “I love designing and being creative, so this was a project I was excited to do! Since it was meant to be a fun entertaining space I wanted to play with different textures and features. For example, in the powder room we did a full, floor-to-ceiling accent wall in a warm black subway tile we installed in a pattern to showcase more detail. I wanted the vanity in there to be an elevated style as well, so we did a floating vanity with reeded doors to add texture and a modern flair. The entertainment spaces

are not large spaces, so we filled them with usable features. For example, the bar! We wanted a large bar where several people could sit comfortably so we kept it very clean and simple with a waterfall edge to really stay consistent with the modern feel and elongate the room. To give the visual appeal of height we continued the countertops as the backsplash and took the glass cabinets to the ceiling. We tied the glass doors in with the full-size glass front beverage fridge and our glass accent wall in the office.” Cabinet-front appliances make the bar appear larger and disguise the full kitchen. The custom-made built-in seating at the base of the curved staircase is a functional enclave. The custom-made iron/glass wall is a truly outstanding feature, which encloses

a bonus room. The upstairs main floor is open, so they wanted each basement space to have its own purpose, yet still mirror the open concept. The bonus room can be used as an office, exercise room or guest bedroom. The widened hallway allows a view of this feature. “A lot of thought went into this layout, and our 14-year-old daughter enjoys her incredible bedroom and bathroom which features floor-to-ceiling green tile with gold accents. She has a walk-in closet and her own washer and dryer!” she smiles. “We had some fun with color and used that amazing green on her built-ins that now double as a feature wall and functional space as a dresser for storing her clothes. Everyone says it’s like she has her own college dorm down there!”

“I started my career by working on my own home during 2008 when times were tough and I had Growing up on a farm in the Midwestern plains of Salina, Kansas, taught Tamara Day, a creative homegrown do-it-yourself kind of girl, ways of finding old, dilapidated homes in her area to turn into beautiful spaces. Her father, Ward Schraeder, was her original teacher and still works with her today. Tamara and her crew transform big, old houses she finds at bargain prices. While respecting the integrity and history of each home, she integrates modern design, function and style to the space, which is ideal for today’s families. “I started my career by working on my own home during 2008 when times were tough and I had to scrape by but still wanted a great design,” she smiles. “I was able to save here and there, and there we had it, our first Bargain Mansion! I love working on old homes because I think the challenges in an old home are what makes each space have character. It’s really hard to put character and charm into a brand-new build. It’s the work around that give you character.” Her interior design, furniture, décor and lifestyle business, Tamara Day Design, was born out of this initial inspiring experience. Day shared they have a lot of design projects going on currently for private clients, both residential and commercial, that she is excited about. In addition, she has worked with RTA Outdoor Living to create a signature outdoor kitchen. Her Cottage X Collection adds a timeless, classic and charming touch to any home. She also recently teamed with RoomMates Décor to create a collection of peel and stick wallpaper. Her collection features a range of designs, from bright bold patterns to calming neutrals, giving any space that designer’s touch. Add to that her four new rug collections, Kaleen Rugs. The first collection, Juniper, is now available for purchase. She also has a partnership with Quorum and Cyan Design to create a collection hard-wired lighting, ceiling fans and decorative accessories this year.

to scrape by but still wanted a great design.”

When asked for tips she would give people desiring to design their homes, she comments, “I think the best trend I see happening is people designing what they like, not what’s on trend. I believe the best design always comes from the personality of the home and homeowner. Quirky is good, and color is fantastic!” She truly has her dream job, but it’s a lot more work than it looks on the show. Her own house was her first ‘Bargain Mansion,’ and that is when the executive producer of the show approached her, and as they say, the rest is history. “We have 10 episodes coming to the Magnolia Network this spring, and I’ve got to say, some of these homes are my favorite we’ve ever done!” she relates. “So much inspiration you’re going to love it. You are also able to shop everything you see on the show on tamaraday.com.” Part of Tamara’s fulfillment comes from her husband, Bill Day, who she married in 2000. Their four children, Henry, Bobby, Thomas and Nora, keep her on her toes and have plenty of ideas for their busy mom! She reiterates that no idea is a bad idea, and her daily challenges are what inspire her to find more old homes in the metro area to bring back to life and restore. Everything she features is available for purchase on tamaraday.com.

3 Hot Trends

ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY BY J.A. STENGER PHOTOGRAPHY

in Kitchen Design

A peek at what’s ahead: bold cabinet colors, statement hardware and swaths of stone. When designing your dream kitchen, it’s important to balance timeless features with elements that reflect your personality and design aesthetic. You may not plan to remodel your kitchen each year (does anyone do that?), but that doesn’t mean there aren’t creative ways to keep your space feeling modern and fresh. We spoke with interior designer Brooke Cover about the trends in kitchen design she’s seeing this year, touching on everything from cabinet colors and lighting to tile and countertop combos she’s loving.

TAKING THE COUNTER MATERIAL UP THE BACKSPLASH Although the iconic subway tile backsplash is timeless in its own right, Brooke says she is seeing a big shift toward marble slab backsplashes — which add drama and depth to the kitchen. Not only is it easier to clean than tile, but a marble backsplash and countertop also sets the tone for the entire space and makes a big statement.

WARMING UP THE WHITE We doubt the classic white kitchen will ever completely go out of style, but trends show people are going away from the white kitchen and gray cabinets. They’re opting for white mixed with warmer wood tones, dark greens and blues. Some homeowners are mixing vintage in with the new and modern through butcher block islands or other unique cabinetry choices. Black is making a bold comeback in some kitchens, while others usher in warmth through painted islands or other darker contrast tiles in the bar area. You don’t have to leave behind the timelessness when you warm up your space if you opt for equally timeless black and wood-stained accents. If you want a quick refresh, consider adding pops of wood through cutting boards or other decor accents on countertops or open shelves.

CONTRAST, CONTRAST, CONTRAST! From painted and stained islands to dark lower cabinetry with bright white uppers and mixed lighting fixtures, contrast is the name of the game this year. You’ll see this juxtaposition between clean white and darker colors or even this year’s favorite - greens and blues - all over newly designed kitchens. You’re not breaking any rules by coordinating sculptural pendants over the kitchen island with more vintage-inspired gooseneck sconces over the standalone bar or a chandelier over the eat-in kitchen.

Brooke’s Pro Tip: I suggest viewing countertop slabs in person vs. a small sample piece because each slab has unique movement and colors. They are all so beautiful and works of art. Taking a trip to the warehouse will really help a client to understand the different types available and see the difference in the look of the material.
