September is known as the fashion and style issue in the magazine world, and we are thrilled to participate in the trend. Styles are ever changing, and designers continuously bring us a fresh new take on something from generations past or share an entirely new concept for us to enjoy. Fashion is often a reinterpretation of a trend that once was. Each decade has its own unique thumbprint on style, and although some cycle back decades later, the originality of each look that is reflected oftentimes is connected to the culture and music of the day. I grew up during the eighties and nineties, and I can’t help but love seeing some of the fashion from those decades resurrect and cycle back. If you are a girl who grew up in those decades, chances are you owned at least one pair of overalls, Birkenstocks, Doc Martins, biker shorts, sweater vests, blazers, puffed sleeve tops, and monochromatic outfits. Walking through a clothing boutique is like talking a stroll back in time, and I am all in. With the changing of seasons comes the time for a closet refresh, and we have you covered with where to find the newest fall styles around town. Fashion choices can reveal a little bit of our personality, so it is a great way to express yourself. So bring on fall in your own best style, and we will see you around town.

The Glossary Salon
Instead of salon owner, founder Leah Leeds prefers the title “Creator of Exceptional Experiences.”

The Glossary Salon is a modern, on-trend salon specializing in creating customized lived-in color, texture modifications, and thicker, fuller hair through professional hair extensions. The stylists at The Glossary are passionate about turning hair dreams into reality.
ARTICLE BY ALLISON SWAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES A MODERN
“I wanted to create a space where women could come and truly feel seen and heard,” says Leeds. “We first started with making the salon a women’s only space, which included making our makeovers directed to women only. I also minimized the marketing on single haircuts without color, which has completely taken away the hustle and bustle of a typical loud salon. Our stylists work mainly on cli ents looking for the new trends in hair fashions with a consciously conservative twist.”
EXCEPTIONALSPECIALIZINGSALONIN\EXPERIENCES
Services at The Glossary include lived-in color, Balayage sun-kissed highlights, Brazilian smooth ing for humidity control, blow outs, QiQi smoothing to change hair texture from pin straight, bouncy fullness or to refine curls, and luxury hand-tied hair extensions that fill in the front and look great in ponytails.
“The experience is almost dreamy when you walk in. The salon is busy yet peaceful and organized. The environment is the perfect balance of being in a public place with just the right amount of people watching, but not too many people around to change the clients peaceful experience.
Clients were wanting hairstyles seen on Pinterest and Instagram, but the terms were not fitting with what they were requesting. The Glossary created their own transformational terms known as their sig nature makeovers to better understand their dream hair. Take their 60 second quiz to find your signature makeover, which ranges from a touch up to a drastic transformation. Touch Up is for those regularly vis iting the salon wanting to touch up roots and with or without a haircut, Shine Up adds a natural high lighted shine for natural color to shine through, Glow Up adds a medium amount of blonde for a noticeable shift, and Transform Me is for those wanting a drastic shift in color with big inspiration ideas.
“Our color makeovers have been going so well that we have currently added texture refinement services to our makeover offerings. We find that we can give the most perfectly accurate color for our clients, but the texture of the hair when taken home affects the way the client’s hair is viewed. This is where we are introducing our Salon Day Packages, which include color AND texture—the ultimate Pinterest hair experience. These packages are avail able to women that would like to invest in a day with us to cut their beauty regimen routine time in half. For a busy woman to reclaim 30 minutes a day from her time spent in her bathroom is priceless. For a woman that feels empowered and more comfortable when her hair is in control, these day packages have massive benefits that will leak into beautiful areas of her life, such as family and work. When we feel good, everything just flows, pops and clicks easily. We offer a range of easy to manage color and texture services—all the client needs to do is have a kernel of a vision and our stylists can take it from there.”
The Glossary is located at 8611 College Boulevard in Overland Park and will open their second loca tion next year in 2023. For more information, visit theglossarysalon.com

TREND SETTER STYLE + BEAUTY
“We teach our stylists to focus on the quality of clients, not quantity. In a typical salon, a stylist could work on ten clients a day, but at The Glossary, our stylists average three to four clients. The value we place on deliberately understanding their needs before they get to our salon, such as the virtual text consultations our new clients love doing, is immensely important to us. We do not allow anyone into the salon without first understanding their current hair and their inspiration picture. Once we completely understand their makeover needs, we will book a makeover for them based on the number of hours needed to spend to achieve their desired results. We do nothing quickly, only intentionally.”

“I wanted to create a timeless design aesthetic that I would still like in 10 years, and a large open floor plan with a warm and cozy feel,” she says. “Although the house is new, I tied in as much ‘old’ as possible, with wood beams, mantles, countertops, shelv ing and backsplashes throughout the home harvested from torn down barns in the area. You can see divots and holes from the imperfections, and I love it!”
The birth of their fabulous home happened three years ago, when this couple set out to build a living space open to light and color, with a modern farmhouse vibe for their family. Style goals were to include many distressed and rustic elements with pops of her handmade artistic personality coming through.

Rustic brick flooring stretches through out the mudroom and laundry room, and white oak hardwood floors are full of wood grains and character. Their kitchen is the focal point of the home, boasting a giant island made from hickory, housing many cabinets and drawers. They chose a large white quartz countertop, which encourages gathering and rich family conversation. The living room, which is right off the kitchen, includes a wood-burning fireplace which is flanked on each side with a tall book shelf filled with vintage, classic books on one side, and shelves full of barn wood on the other.
“I had the unique opportunity to cre ate my own ‘accent wall’ in our powder room bathroom off the kitchen. I wanted a painted tile look, with muted colors and imperfections and a roughed-up look,” she says. “I designed the pattern and painted each tile, which took about five months of painting! The tile install ers did an amazing job putting them in. That wall, paired with a thick piece of old wood as our bathroom countertop, makes my powder room feel very unique andTheyspecial.”credit their builder, Troy Moore with Madi Mali Homes, with helping create the amazing elements in the home, including tall interior trim work, a wide staircase set in the middle of the home, and the tall interior gabled arches adorned with wood beams and shiplap. They enjoy the builders’ suggestions and incorporated design elements that make their home so unique, which is truly priceless to them.

Kansas City
love ARTICLE BY KATIE CURRID The owners of Solar Shield could have moved their business anywhere, and they chose Kansas City 38
Tim started working for his wife’s family’s win dow covering business in high school, and after learning the installation side of the business, he started his own window covering business, Solar Shield, in 2006. Solar Shield works with anything that goes on a window or needs a solution from the sun — curtains, blinds, shades, shutters, you name it. He built his Peoria company to the point where he had curated such a great group of employees that he knew he could hand the reins over to them and expand the business to a differ ent market and started searching for the perfect place to move his family.
“We get Google reviews almost on a daily basis at this point,” says Tim. “So that’s been a really big testament to how good of a market Kansas City is and our experience setting up shop here — people’s willingness to help us through our business.” Solar Shield will have called Kansas City home for four years, and they have the friendliness and helpfulness of Kansas Citians
While folks who live in Kansas City know how amazing Kansas City is, people who have never been here don’t always get it. So when Kansas Citians find out someone uprooted their entire family and specifically picked Kansas City over other places to live, the initial question is often, “Why?” But that’s just what Tim Sanders, owner of Solar Shield Blinds Shades Solutions, and his family did. He’s a transplant from Peoria, Illinois, and he handpicked the Kansas City area to move his business and his family because he fell in love with the city, and he might just be one of Kansas City’s biggest cheerleaders now.
In April of 2018, they decided to take a trip to Kansas City, landing at KCI while there was still snow on the ground. The weather warmed during their visit and as the weather warmed, the Sanders family did, too. “Everybody was super friendly,” says Tim. “People would stop and talk to us and seemed to be a little more upbeat and a little happier than where we were in Illinois. It still felt very Midwestern so we weren’t going to lose our winters or anything like that. A lot of people started trying to help us with our business. It was amazing.” By the end of the week, the Sanders were sold on Kansas City. They made the decision on the patio of Jack Stack, on one of those perfect days you get at the end of winter when spring finally starts to show — Kansas City would be their new home.

The Sanders have been in Kansas City since 2018 and love their decision to make it their home. He said people have been incredibly wel coming to both their family and their business. Early on in moving here, Tim made it a goal to make Solar Shield one of the highest-rated companies on Google for the metro area. It took him less than three years to reach that goal, and they now have over 300 5-star reviews.
“Everybody that our customers deal with, from our office staff, to who ever comes out to their house to the installer is excited to help them. It’s kind of that old school, good, old-fashioned customer service with new-age business processes.”
