Talking About Finances Isn’t Taboo: How Staying Quiet Could Hurt You
By Jessica Searcy Kmetty, ChSNC®, AIFA®, CPFA, C(k)P® Principal at Searcy Financial Services, a Fee-Only, NAPFA Registered Advisory Firm
W
hether you’re talking about finances as a couple, as a family, or with a financial advisor, the situation can feel uncomfortable and vulnerable. Chances are, finances weren’t talked about in your house growing up. For many, discussing such things was considered taboo, so it’s hard to start a conversation now about something you just don’t have experience talking about. But, staying quiet about finances could hurt you. Have you ever felt the need to hide your debt from your future spouse? Ever had a hard time telling your partner you can’t pay off the credit card this month? Ever felt inadequate when asking an advisor to help you start investing? Here’s the thing about talking about finances: it’s scary to start the conversation, and it’s scary to NOT start the conversation. It may feel more comfortable to keep your feelings, struggles or fears tucked away, but the longer you avoid discussing them, the harder it will be to reach your goals or dig yourself out of a bad place. I have talked with many people who spent years thinking they were in a “good place”
financially, without really doing an analysis on what that means for their lifestyle and if they’re really in a good place or not. They let several years go by before finding out they were not prepared for a financially successful retirement. The element of time is so important when it comes to your future goals, and you don’t want to be stuck in a place where time is not on your side.

Letter from the Editor WE ARE CELEBRATING MEN IN OUR COMMUNITY FOR OUR JUNE ISSUE, AND AS I PREPARED THIS MONTH’S CONTENT, I FELT SO MUCH GRATITUDE FOR THE MANY AMAZING MEN THROUGHOUT MY LIFE THAT HAVE GREATLY IMPACTED ME. Among those include my 5 brothers who I dearly love. Growing up in a very large family had so many wonderful aspects, and one of those perks was being around so many different personalities all under one roof. All 5 of my brothers are all so drastically different from one another, each encompassing strong character attributes and various strengths that make them wonderful. Whether it was Dale’s kindness and wisdom, Steven’s quick-wit and generosity, Daniel’s tenacity and dependability, Kevin’s

creativity and humor or Brian’s loyalty and virtuous nature, they each add so much to our family dynamic that is irreplaceable. I loved having 5 brothers in the house when I was growing up. Their antics with each other brought so much life and humor to our home. In one moment they could be mischievous and competitive with each other, and the next moment defending each other at all costs. I learned so many life lessons from having these 5 men in my life. I watch each one of them and how they have made an impact on this world and beam with pride. They are each successful in their own way by the world’s standards, but that is not what impresses me about them. All 5 of them do the right thing when no one is watching. They

IT’S A BEAUTIFUL SUNNY AFTERNOON IN KANSAS CITY OUTSIDE THE STUDIO OF SIKE STYLE INDUSTRIES, WHICH IS TUCKED AWAY BEHIND A NON-DESCRIPT DOOR NEAR 16TH AND OAK STREET, ACROSS FROM THE FORMER KC STAR PRINTING PRESS AND ITS EXPANSIVE, BEAUTIFUL FACADE OF HORIZONTAL TEAL GREEN PANELS. The studio space is the former home of the SqueezeBox Theater, which, true to its name, is indeed cozy but just big enough to house muralist Phil “Sike Style” Shafer, along with his executive director, Holly Hayden, and fellow artist JT Daniels. Shafer, who graduated from the KC Art Institute and started Sike Style Industries roughly 20 years ago, spent his early childhood in Brooklyn, NY, where modern street art was made famous. “I always equate that experience to the foundation of my artistic style,” he explains. “In the ‘80s, New York was grimy and covered in graffiti. That sense of loud colors and crazy patterns and shapes is a part of what made me. I was a kid absorbing New York culture and then bringing it to the Midwest.” Shafer’s grandfather, who was stationed at the former RichardsGebaur Air Force Base, near Grandview, Mo. is the reason the CONTINUED >

After quarantining for two weeks in Iowa, Katharine made the trip to Mark’s home in Shawnee, Ks. The two were unsure if their connection would remain strong outside the emotional weight of Mark’s health crisis. What was planned as a sojourn turned into a lengthened, 11-day stay, as admiration quickly solidified into love. “He was such a smart, introspective man,” Katharine says. “During that initial visit, we went to Loose Park on a beautiful afternoon, laid ON FEBRUARY 10, 2020, MARK PASSARO CHECKED INTO

Iowa, settling on a cozy wine bar they both loved, a proper date. In the meantime, Mark suggested they continue to text until he was released. Katharine agreed. Quickly, the texting turned into a daily FaceTime between the burgeoning couple. What had begun as a mutual interest began to evolve into something more meaningful. “As time went on, we began to have real and deep conversations,” Katharine recollects. “He had a way of understanding what I was feeling before I could articulate it. I remember thinking that this was a very special person and that I was going to live in the moment no matter what each day presented.” As the days turned into weeks, Mark’s conditioned worsened. Soon, he was transferred to the ICU and put on oxygen to assist his failing lungs. Around the same time, as hospitalizations exploded, the COVID-19 outbreak was declared a pandemic, adding a new dimension of risk to his recovery. “It was the sickest I’d ever been,” he recalls. “I definitely considered the possibility that I was never going to make it out of this.” Eventually, his doctors turned to plasmapheresis treatments, a process where existing blood plasma is removed and exchanged with new, healthy plasma. The procedure finally turned the tide for him, and he was released from the hospital in late March of 2020. CityLifestyle.com/JohnsonCounty

TAKING THE STAGE IF YOU’RE ANYTHING LIKE ME, YOU’VE BEEN BOTHERED BY AN ITCH FOR QUITE SOME TIME. An itch you haven’t been able to scratch for over a year now. No, this isn’t an article on flea and tick season (though, -PSA, - it is here) but rather the return of live music to most of our lives. There are some things that you just can’t re-create, and the booming sound of amps, drums, and guitar riffs while mingling with strangers that share a mutual appreciation is a uniquely joyful experience. Well, scratch no longer. As the warmth of spring settles in for good, Kansas City’s outdoor music venues are back in business, welcoming patrons once again. So, if you are looking to take in some tunes under the summer sky, you have plenty of options to choose from. Let’s break it down.
LARGER VENUES STARLIGHT THEATER Designed by local architect Edward Delk, Starlight Theater officially opened in 1951, hosting plays and musicals. Famously, former president Harry Truman, aptly playing the role of “President” in a production of Mr. President, had to be rushed from Starlight to the hospital at intermission due to a bout of appendicitis. With its sloped seating, towering brick façade, and lush surroundings, an evening spent at Starlight Theater is as delightful as they come. Listen closely, and you might just hear the roar of a hungry lion at the nearby Kansas City Zoo. UPCOMING SHOWS INCLUDE: + Barenaked Ladies (6/30) + Alicia Keys (8/25) + The Doobie Brothers (9/14) More info at: kcstarlight.com CONTINUED >

GRINDERS KC Nestled between Locust and Oak Street in Kansas City’s Crossroads District, sits Grinders KC, a spacious open-air venue serving up a variety of musical acts to go along with delicious pizza, tots, and other snackable bites served from the back window of its namesake, Grinders Pizza. As unique a venue as you’ll find, at Grinders KC, you can take in views of the city skyline while you sip on some suds and groove under a canopy of stars. UPCOMING SHOWS INCLUDE: + Jamie Johnson (6/18) + Sheryl Crow (6/28) + The Decemberists (8/7) More info at: grinderspizza.com/kansascity/concerts/ PROVIDENCE MEDICAL AMPHITHEATER Providence Medical Amphitheater has been a mainstay KC music destination since 1984. So much so that taking in a show here is a Kansas City rite of passage. With a capacity of 18,000, this sprawling complex, located in Bonner Springs, Kansas, features both bleachers and grass seating, not to mention some prime standing (or moshing) room down near the stage. Providence makes its hay by hosting bigger, popular acts from across the sonic spectrum. UPCOMING SHOWS INCLUDE: + For King & Country (7/17) + Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit (8/3) + The Avett Brothers (10/1) More info at: providenceamp.com KNUCKLEHEADS You’ll know you’re close to arriving at Knuckleheads right around the time you think you’re lost. This neon lit bar, its parking lot often filled with motorcycles, is tucked away in KC’s East Bottoms district, looking like it was plucked straight from the set of Roadhouse. No worries, though - patrons will find nothing but good vibes upon entry. While it features four stages, the jewel of Knuckleheads is its large outdoor courtyard, which includes a converted caboose for VIPs, and a raised deck for patrons to look down upon the action on stage while getting a good view of the passing trains close by. beers, and specialty mixed drinks complement the food. Around every turn, there’s more fun to be had - don’t miss the balloon and caricature artists and stay for the fireworks. We’ve had sunny skies, starry nights, rain, and rainbows. And it has always been a lovely party. The hand-painted Stems wine glasses, a signature of the event, are back but with exciting new designs. In recognition that social gatherings in 2021 will continue to require precautions for the health and safety of attendees, be assured that the Arts & Recreation Foundation will follow the protocols and procedures prescribed by city and county health officials that will ensure both a safe and enjoyable outdoor experience with minimal risk. Proceeds from Stems: A Garden Soirée ensure that The Arts & Recreation Foundation of Overland Park can continue to support and develop Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead, the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, and city art installations. Your investment of time and money allows us to sustain the Foundation and our initiatives. These grants fund necessary programs and capital improvements in our cultural and recreational community gems. This event will take place on Saturday, June 26 from 7:00 - 11:00 p.m. at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. HEALTHY LIFESTYLE THE PRO GOLFER’S FITNESS JOURNEY
SCOTT
STALLINGS’
WORKOUT ARTICLE CITY LIFESTYLE
SCOTT STALLINGS DISCOVERED HIS INTEREST IN GOLF AT THE YOUNG AGE OF 3. But it was the “aha moment” for his love of the game that came in 1997 when Tiger Woods won the Masters and would forever change the entire landscape of the industry, as well as what Stallings would aspire to achieve in his future professional endeavors. Little did he know at the time, however, not just how successful he would become, but also how an unforeseen health compromise would also rock his world, and his cross training, for the better. He was a seven-time tournament winner and was an All-American while attending Tennessee Tech, and he has won on the PGA Tour three times as a professional golfer. Flash forward to the year 2016: It became a life-changing year he never would have anticipated; one filled with strife as he learned he had been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea and acute adrenal fatigue. It was a result of some unhealthy nutritional habits, both of which affected his ability to continue effectively as a professional athlete. With the guidance of doctors, surgeons, and his good friend Rich Froning, a four-time Crossfit champion, Scott developed a workout to trim 60 pounds, boasting 10% body fat, revising his daily eating habits, and sleeping healthily through the night. Had Scott not gone to the doctor because of that innate fear, he never would have known the diagnosis of sleep apnea that needed to be addressed. Luckily for Scott, he didn’t have an overwhelming, crazy life overhaul. Instead, he was able to find one small thing, delivering simple systematic changes in his workout that led to his improvement in fitness and quality of life. “You only get one body,” he says. “Golf is a grind, but don’t let physicality get in the way of your game,” Scott says.

SCOTT’S TOP EXERCISES
KETTLEBELL POWER SNATCH: Uses ground force to leverage the kettlebell upward, then the shoulder, arm and back support the weight as it gets pushed overhead. Also a great cardio exercise and trains the body for a good golf swing.
KETTLEBELL HALO: Start by holding the kettlebell upside down at chest height, then lift the weight to head height and rotate it around the head like a halo in both directions. This exercise focuses on shoulder mobility—which is important for a good golf swing—and warms up the muscles and soft tissue around the shoulder girdle.
CLEAN TO LUNGE: First, the kettlebell is lifted from the ground to shoulder height. Then, the foward lunge loads weight into the legs one at a time, which happens from the backswing to the downswing. The exercise increases strength in calves and forearms, which is essential for a powerful swing.
LANDMINES: LANDMINE RAINBOW: Tracing the shape of a rainbow, take the barbell down alongside each hip in a rotational movement and then back to an overhead position. Strengthens legs, shoulders and arms; improves coordination for ground-up downswing. LANDMINE ROTATIONAL CLEAN AND PRESS: Facing the landmine, hold the bar in your right hand, then pivot your toes 90 degrees to the left, dropping into a deep lunge while still holding the bar with your straight arm. Press into your front foot and stand up as you press and lift the barbell to chest height, all in one quick motion. From the waist down, this move mimics the look of a golfer finishing a swing. LANDMINE THRUSTER: Thrust the barbell upward from a squat position. Builds lower-body muscles, which are key for the start of the ground swing and to get longer off the tee. 48

L E AT H E R + W O O D
THIS PAST YEAR HAS BROUGHT SO MUCH CHANGE TO OUR WORK ENVIRONMENT AND MORE PEOPLE ARE WORKING FROM HOME THAN EVER BEFORE. In order to create a great home office there are a few things that are essential to making it great. If the room doesn’t have great natural lighting then plan to add some decorative but functional overhead lights or lamps. One of the most important details is providing storage. No matter what you do, design your space with great seating and a surface large enough to accommodate your work needs. Bring natural elements in with leather, wood and plants to create a sophisticated and casual space. Sourced by Ivy & Sparrow and Very Violet Boutique
