HAVE SPENT MOST OF MY TIME IN THE CAR CHAUFFEURING THE KIDS TO AND FROM ACTIVITIES. Baseball fields, swimming pools, summer training programs and camps have consumed our days, and as constant and busy as it is, I know that I am going to greatly miss this someday. It has been a whirlwind of activity, and summer is always the time when working from home becomes a bit more difficult to balance. As I write from my home office, I realize that I’m feeling guilty that my kids are home and off-the-clock, probably playing video games. I tend to feel that internal struggle to set up an activity for them because too much idle time bothers me, and in reality it shouldn’t. I know in my heart (and studies are backing me up on this): Kids need downtime. It’s incredibly healthy and necessary for kids to have time to recuperate from the busy schedules they keep. As a child, I had countless hours of downtime, and it helped me to become more creative in how I spent my time and allowed me to appreciate the fun stuff when it did occur.

A Financial Roadmap for Life By Michael J. Searcy, ChFC®, CFP®, AIFA®

President & CEO at Searcy Financial Services, a Fee-Only, NAPFA Registered Advisory Firm

There’s a big difference between making a good living and making a good life. Making a good life, for me, means I get to help people pull together all the pieces of their current situation, and show them how each piece impacts the others, creating an organization to the chaos to help guide them through the life they desire. I’ve met countless people who make a great living, but make no time to really live. Having a financial plan is crucial to getting the most out of life, and beyond. Following that financial plan could be the difference between “I’m so glad I planned and prioritized,” and “I shoulda, coulda, wish I woulda.” A financial plan is often thought of like a roadmap, but it’s more like an overarching plan for your entire trip, not just meant to focus on your current and final destination. A financial plan does guide you between destinations, but it’s not static and can account for things that come up along the way. If you decide or are forced to take a detour, it can be your guide to getting back on track. In road trip terms, your plan could include: your overall budget, where and how you’ll spend money along the way, goals you want to accomplish on your route, a plan for emergencies and detours, making sure your insurance is up-to-date in case of trouble, an “emergency cash” buffer for things that pop up, and much more. From Folded Atlas to GPS How many people do you know that still use a folded atlas to reach their destination? Sometimes there’s just a comfort or nostalgia in holding the printed copy of a map that’s going to lead you where you want to be. But what if you left your map at home or had it locked up somewhere and nobody else knew how to get to it? The great thing about technology these days is, if you need a backup map, you can pull up your destination on a mobile device and be on your way. It’s the same with your financial plan. Having cloud-based access to your plan keeps it safe from misplacement and natural hazards, and you can grant access to others for when you’re not around. When You’re No Longer the Driver When you’re no longer living or are incapacitated (think dementia), what type of situation do you want to leave for your family? Do you want their grieving process to include frantic searches for your end-of-life wishes, insurance accounts, and financial statements? Do you want them facing this situation alone with no idea where to get started? Probably not. Working with an advisory team allows you to have people that know the fine details of your plan and can help your passengers navigate when you’re no longer the driver. They can also help set someone else up to drive, which means if you leave a spouse behind, someone is there to take care of them and get them back on the road to success. If you don’t have a plan, get one immediately. Don’t let yourself travel from Florida to California and look back wishing you’d stopped at the Grand Canyon. Remember, a financial plan can get you from point to point, but its true value is that it guides you to live and enjoy life along the way!

met many musicians, and one evening he invited guitarists James Lake and Andy Launder to join him. They played four songs together and formed an instant connection. KC Guitar Trio was birthed—a group Bingham describes as an acoustic rock experience. They use a lot of effects: distortion pedals, wah pedals, octave pedals, harmonicas, and mandolins, and they innovatively arrange everything by dividing up the parts of rhythm, bassline, and melody. This ensures they create a well-developed song with a lot depth to it. In true workaholic fashion Bingham continues to teach and has also started teaching online, writing his own curriculum, and uploading lessons to YouTube. What makes his online classes unique is that he uses karate style colored bracelets that students can earn through practicing, performing, and connecting with other people. His hope is that a tangible motivator will encourage students not to flame out because they will be able to see their progression. To date, Bingham has impacted more than 1,000 students by purely doing what he loves: playing guitar.

Think twice before killing the golden goose Divorce and family law matters can be an emotional time. In many of these cases, parties are worried about custody and support of their children. Custody cases in particular can cause a wide-range of emotions. While parties should never put their children in the middle, parties can sometimes get caught up in a contentious custody battle. This can cause some parties to become emotional and lose sight of what is important. Divorce cases involving spousal maintenance (formerly known as “alimony”) can also be acrimonious. There are certain scenarios where one party feels as if they will not be able to meet their needs without the financial help of their soon-to-be ex-spouse. In some of these cases, one of the parties might make more income than the other. In certain cases, one party might make substantially more. It might be that one party has education, skills and a work history that the other party does not have. However, in an effort at gaining an advantage in a custody or spousal support case, some parties are tempted to loft scandalous allegations. Sometimes, the allegations may have little or no merit. They may be exaggerated, embellished or untruthful altogether. But to gain an apparent advantage, or due to their anger or emotions, they are 38

Johnson County Lifestyle | July 2019

tempted to fling mud. It might mean that they file a motion in the family court that contains scandalous allegations. It could be that they issue some subpoenas or take depositions based on these allegations. In other cases, parties might decide to call protective services (also known as DFS or family services) on the other parent when the children are not facing real risk from abuse or neglect. They might even call the police on the other parent when nothing has happened to warrant it. It could be that they begin contacting co-workers or involving the other party’s employer or business contacts unnecessarily. Obviously, if there are legitimate allegations, those need to be raised. At the same time, if a party is simply stirring the pot by raising scandalous allegations that have little or no merit, this is not helpful. The truth is that if they kill the golden goose, then what? Put simply, if the party who makes substantially more income has their reputation sullied in the community, or they lose their job, how does this help the situation? This can actually hurt the spousal maintenance case of the party bringing these scandalous allegations. For example, how can the other party pay spousal maintenance if they end up losing business (due to their reputation being harmed in the community) or, worse yet, they lose their job

altogether? Even if they were to get custody based on these scandalous allegations, if the other party loses business or their job, it can have the net effect of lowering the child support amount. More importantly, it can also impact the kids emotionally if they end up being interviewed by protective services or a guardian ad litem who is investigating the allegations. Psychologically, this can be damaging to the children and has the net effect of putting the kids in the middle of the dispute. Further, if the allegations are frivolous, it can impact the credibility of the party raising the allegations. Many family court judges are not impressed with parties who raise scandalous allegations that have little or no merit. This can result in a boomerang effect where the party who brought the frivolous allegations ends up being the one hurt. GIVING BACK

The Battle Within LOCAL U.S. ARMY VETERAN JUSTIN HOOVER ENJOYED PLAYING SOCCER AND RUNNING CROSS COUNTRY WHILE GROWING UP IN OLATHE, KANSAS. AFTER GRADUATING FROM OLATHE SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL IN 2002 HE BEGAN STUDYING MARKETING AT KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY. While attending K-State, on the eve of the Iraq War, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. Several factors led to this decision. He explains, “Many of my childhood heroes were family friends who had served, mostly in WWII. I felt I should contribute to my country.” He was assigned to the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team (SBCT) 25th Infantry Division out of Washington State. He trained as an infantryman and served as radio operator for a combat infantry platoon. While deployed to Iraq in 2004, Hoover was injured during a combat patrol mission. “We were chasing a suspicious vehicle through Mosul when my vehicle was struck by a suicide car bomb,” Hoover recounts. “An artillery shell in the trunk exploded. Shrapnel shredded seven of the eight tires of the vehicle, ripped through the receiver of the machine gun, rendering it useless and injuring my left hand. Thankfully no one else in the vehicle was injured.”

(CON TI N U ED)

Due to needing to be medically evacuated from the area, his deployment was cut short. He underwent two surgeries in Iraq, before being taken to Germany where a third surgery was performed by a specialist. Justin was awarded a Purple Heart for the injuries he sustained. Today, Justin is still contributing greatly to his community and country through his work as executive director of operations for The Battle Within, a non-profit organization founded in November 2018 by more than 100 veterans, first responders, community leaders and supporters. They are devoted to helping military personnel and first responders deal with the psychological challenges of their professions. “Adam Mager is the founder of this movement in Kansas City,” Hoover says. “He was an Army combat medic who returned home and suffered greatly. Unable to find the help he needed, he began looking at ancient warrior cultures to see how they coped with the aftermath of war. From that he developed the curriculum we currently use today.” The Battle Within offers a five-day program, free of charge for all who attend. “We serve warriors nationwide,” Hoover says. “These are veterans, first responders, dispatchers, federal agents, corrections officers, ER doctors and nurses.” Participants are taught tools, including meditation, mindfulness, journaling, fitness, nutrition, yoga, and family support that when practiced turn into true lifestyle changes. “It is our belief that every warrior deserves the same opportunity to heal from the traumas they have endured in their service to others,” Hoover says. “We have come together to provide a program built by warriors using holistic techniques steeped in ancient warrior culture and backed by modern evidence-based methods. We are working to make Kansas City the nation’s destination for Warrior Mental Health. Thanks to the support of our city, non-profit partners and donors, we are able to work for our veterans and first responders every day.”

K I D ’S WHAT YOU NEED: + 10 drops lemon essential oil + 10 drops lemongrass essential oil + 4 drops lavender essential oil + 1 ½ ounces distilled water (minus 1 teaspoon to make room for the essential oils in the bottle) + ½ ounce 95% proof grain alcohol* WHAT YOU DO: In a 2-ounce spray bottle, add the grain alcohol (or Solubol) and drop in essential oils. Swirl to combine. Place the cap back on the bottle. Allow the oils to disperse in the alcohol for about 1 hour, then add distilled water, swirling again to combine.

*The grain alcohol is used as a preservative as well as a carrier for the oils, but you can also use a product like this instead of grain alcohol at a 1:4 ratio (1 drop essential oil to 4 drops Solubol) if you’d rather and then just fill the rest with water to fill the 2-ounce spray bottle.

While there can be concern about citrus oils on the skin when exposed to sunlight, lemongrass isn’t a photosensitive oil, and if lemon essential oil is steam-distilled rather than cold-pressed (Oui Fresh essential oils are cold-pressed) it can be used on the skin. So just make sure to note which one your lemon oil is and only spray on clothes if you don’t have a skin-safe lemon oil (which is an application method a lot of people prefer anyway if they are more sensitive to oils).
