Letter from the Editor I LOVE A GOOD HOME PROJECT. There is something invigorating about freshening up a room with new paint, bringing in a splash of color with throw pillows, or updating a room with a total transformation. I am a DIY'er by nature and always have something I am working on, but my latest project has hands-down been one of my favorites to date.

My sister and I had the privilege of turning an office space into to a baby’s room for someone who is very close to us. What made this project so special is that this couple has been waiting to adopt a baby for quite some time, and they were unexpectedly selected as parents just a few short weeks prior to the birth. With so much to do in such a short amount of time, they didn’t have time to decorate a nursery, so we stepped in and surprised them with one upon their return from their hospital stay.

So much love was poured into every detail of this room. Not only did we want the room to be functional and reflect this couple’s style and taste, we wanted it to be a space that they could enjoy rocking their new baby girl to sleep in and could be a retreat to soak in sweet moments with her. There were so many emotions as we prepared this room for their homecoming. We felt so much joy for this couple as we knew that this was

RAW BEGINNINGS CREATIVITY IS INGRAINED

WHEN ZECH JOHNSON WAS A CHILD LIVING IN SHAWNEE, KS, HE FELT HAPPIEST WHEN HE WAS CLIMBING TREES. He embraced them limb and trunk, looking skyward as he let his mind roam free. Then he grew up, became practical, went to college and chose a respectable profession.

But the trees wouldn’t let him go. Today, Zech has come full circle to that inner child. As owner of RAW Beginnings, Zech is a full-time woodworking artist who celebrates every knot and grain of every species, crafting it into original artwork, home goods, and furniture for sale at his shop in the West Bottoms.

“Some people just see a piece of wood,” Zech says, “but I look at each board, knot and grain pattern and how those details will add character. Having a vision for a piece and seeing it come alive is my favorite part of what I do.”

Together with his wife, Aubrey, Zech creates one-of-a-kind artwork and consigned pieces, currently ranging from an $8 wood accent to a $1,500 dining table. About 25 percent of his business is custom pieces, with his favorite designs being wood wall art.

“I have a piece I call Yin and Yang designed after my relationship with my wife,” Zech says. “We’re two different people who work well together and complement each other. It’s simple but complex.”

Zech credits Aubrey with much of his inspiration. After meeting in their junior year of high school at a bonfire (“sparks were flying,” says Zech), they knew they’d met their match. In fact, Aubrey helped Zech realize the artist within him.

“She helped me understand what an artist is--a visionary creator,” Zech says.

Although Aubrey works full-time as a professional photographer at a studio, she devotes her afterhours to their business--organizing the books, their social media, and creative collaboration.

Zech says that Aubrey was instrumental in making RAW Beginnings a reality.

“I originally went to college to be a teacher, but I felt like something was missing,” Zech says. I kept telling Aubrey (then my fiancée) about wanting to work with my hands more. Right before I started my practicums we came to an emotional crossroads. We both knew I wasn’t happy, so I decided to take a break. Soon after, I got a call about a remodeling job. I loved it but still desired more creativity.”

At the time, Aubrey’s boss had a booth in the West Bottoms and offered to let Zech include his refinished furniture.

The West Bottoms was booming,” Zech says. “Within a year, I left my remodeling job to run our business full time which I’ve been doing for the past three years.”

Zech admits that running one’s own business is challenging but worth it.

“It’s unbelievable how much time and money are required, especially in the first few years,” Zech says.

“We were young (and still are), but we knew we couldn’t settle for less. I’m fortunate to have made the decision to follow the dream of RAW Beginnings.”

Aubrey adds that Zech is definitely the artist behind the brand.

“I love the days when I come home from work to a new product,” she says. “I wish I could say our home is full of his pieces, but I usually get to sample them for a short time before they head to the store!”

Zech’s woodshop is filled with the expected tools—table saw, miter saw, planer, joiner, sanders, and pneumatic air tools—but his newest baby is the CNC plasma cutting machine. He especially likes working with reclaimed wood and appreciates that every piece has a story.

For inspiration, they scour magazines and Pinterest, paying close attention to design trends. Their future plans include trade shows and expanding into more locations.

Zech says he would love to one day have his work displayed in the Made in KC store.

One highlight for Zech this past summer was when Royals player Whit Merrifield bought one of Zech’s products, a Kansas City branded bottle opener: “That was pretty exciting,” he says.

The Johnsons both love Kansas City, and many of Zech’s products promote the name.

“I’m a proud Kansas-Citian,” Zech says. “We have great restaurants and a diverse city. In 10 minutes, you can drive from the plaza, to Westport, to downtown and find a great brewery, coffee shop, boutique, market, or restaurant anywhere in between.”

Zech and Aubrey also make it a priority to volunteer at their church, Cross Points, in Shawnee, where they work with the youth.

“We’ve had many people invest into our lives,” they add, “and we want to do the same for the next generation.”

LIVING ROOM We recently updated the focal point of our lower living room by updating our fireplace, which used to have two very creepy wooden faces with eyes as the corbels as well as some dated tile. We removed the faces and the wall and base tile surround, which revealed some good quality brick that we decided to paint white. We also added some marble-look porcelain tile at the base, which really helps it pop. Over the years this space has also seen fresh paint and new flooring. I love the built-in cabinets and coffered ceilings that came with the home. We also have a corner wet bar that we plan to update soon.

LAUNDRY ROOM We updated our small laundry room off of a half bathroom by removing some bulky cabinets and adding tile, open shelving, lighting, and some colorful accessories. It was a very affordable update that helped brighten up this frequently used room.

KID’S BEDROOM Our five-year-old daughter Vivienne’s bedroom didn’t need many updates. We kept the original grey paint color and simply added carpeting and decor. I wanted to make the space colorful and fun for her. The closet has functional shelving on the front and actually has a small secret passage doorway to the adjoining bedroom inside.

PLAY ROOM Vivienne’s playroom is a fun space that only needed some fresh paint and carpeting.

The teepee I made for Vivienne’s first birthday serves as the focal point of the room.

There’s a cute window seat in between two built-in Murphy beds that we will probably use down the road, and my favorite feature is the “secret passageway” faux bookshelf door that opens to the attic and observatory.

ATTIC AND OBSERVATORY The attic is a fun finished space that we use as a secondary playroom, and the only change we made was adding fresh paint.

I love all of the built-in storage and unique character, especially the observatory. I can picture this room serving many different uses in the future—possibly a giant walk-in closet or a craft room. So many options!

I love the vaulted ceiling and sky light window and am proud to say I scored the midcentury-modern desk and cabinet for free from neighborhood trash piles. I use the office nook to store all of my craft supplies, which I use to make projects for my blog and monthly DIY TV segment on KCTV5’s Better Kansas City.Â

THE FIRE THAT DESTROYED THE HOME OF ANDY AND KRISTEN KASSELMAN WAS NO MATCH FOR THE RESILIENCE IN THEIR SOULS. This young family endured the loss of all of their possessions, except for their prized record collection which survived to set the rhythm for their new home. Their love of music brought resounding hope, and it provided the colorful design aesthetic and vibe that Nest Interiors could play with.

“Losing everything and having to start over was devastating to them,” says Katy Cassaw, co-owner of Nest Interiors. “But they found a beautiful new home, and they reached out to us to help them furnish it. It needed some cosmetic changes to make it feel fresh and fun, like them. We installed the items in each room, hung art, made their beds and helped them have that ‘move that bus’ moment.”

Cassaw says that she and her business partner, Kat Benson, were inspired by the colors of the Kasselmans’ record collection that was salvaged from the fire, playing off its mid-century tempo and casual feel.

“Our favorite part of this project was working with their love of color and texture and then seeing their reaction to coming home to a new space that felt like them,” Benson says. “It was possibly one of the best reactions from a client we’ve had thus far.

They were not only excited to see it all come together, but they were finally starting this new chapter in their lives and settling into their new family home. We were so honored to be a part of their story.”

Cassaw says that the biggest challenge of this Overland Park project was balancing its scope (which included a design of the girls’ bedrooms) while keeping within budget. The result was a high-low master mix.

“Mixing price points to get a unique, finished look was our goal,” Cassaw says.

“We got thrifty and really wanted pieces that were a high-quality look but wouldn’t break the budget bank because purchasing everything new is a big undertaking and can add up quickly. We put the majority of their budget toward quality furniture pieces that would last them for many years to come.”

The Kasselmans say they are so thrilled with the results of their new home that they have already recommended Nest Interiors to others.

The false mindset of fixing it later Individuals facing a divorce or family law matter are often faced with difficult decisions. Their spouse (or the other party to the family law case) may have an attorney. They indicate that their attorney is simply going to draw up the paperwork to conclude the case quick.

When faced with this, many decide not to get a lawyer. Their mindset is that although the settlement paperwork is flawed in many respects, they can simply go back and fix it later.

In other words, the view of some is that they should simply agree to the settlement that is being proposed. That will make the divorce or family matter end.

After the case is done, many think they will just come back later and fix what was wrong with the original agreement. For example, if there are children, and a prior child custody or support order, they figure that they will just modify it later.

This strategy is based on an incremental view that you can simply bite off certain parts of the case (like getting divorced) and then later deal with the other issues in the future. Often, this approach is based on saving

attorney fees or keeping things civil with their soon-to-be ex-spouse (or the other party).

The problem is that modifying a prior court order is not simple or easy. It can be harder to fix something that was not right to begin with than to simply make sure it was fair and just from the start.

This is because to modify a prior court order as to custody or support, a party typically has to show a change of circumstances of a substantial and continuing basis. In other words, one cannot come back to court with the incremental argument that they agreed to what they originally agreed to just to get the case done, but that it was not really right from the start.

In most courts, this argument will not work. A party has to show that something is now different. They have to show that the difference is something significant and continuing. For many parties, this can be a tough standard to meet in court.

This means that many parties who simply agree to a bad deal to get it done may end up facing a few problematic situations: • One, it might be that they end up being stuck with it and are never able to fix the bad parts of the original judgment

or order.

Two, even if a party is successful in obtaining a modification, many spend a lot more money in the long run on attorney’s fees trying to obtain a modification than if they simply had it done right from the start.

• Three, in terms of property and debt division in a divorce, this is almost always non-modifiable (meaning the you cannot come back to court later to change the original settlement).

This is why parties who have a mindset that they are going to fix the bad parts of their divorce or family law settlement later are often missing the mark. It is almost always vital to make sure everything is correct from the start.

KEVIN AND MOLLY JARVIS ARE THE OWNERS OF BRASSTACKS, AN INTERIOR DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION BUSINESS LOCATED IN KANSAS CITY. Just like the namesake of their business, which means “details of immediate practical importance,” their beautiful home is also full of detail and clean, intentional design.

The couple met in art school and connected through their dreams of becoming entrepreneurs.

“Kevin was going for graphic design and I was going for fashion design,” Molly says. “We have always been dreamers, so even while we were both doing other ventures, we would think of different businesses we could own, and they all had creativity in common. Kevin started Brasstacks initially as a furniture design company, which evolved from furniture to being a general contractor. I had been previously working for Anthropologie doing visual merchandising and store design and came onboard to do the interior design.”

Molly describes her style as modern with personality.

“I love clean lines and being intentional with everything we do, but I also love lots of texture, warmth and natural elements. When we originally started this house, we were thinking French modern, leaving some of the traditional elements mixed with vintage and a warm palette. Over time, the project evolved in a good way, as most projects do, and we landed with lots of warm wood, whites and creams, and an autumnal palette of mustard, ochre and rust. We have a good amount of vintage, custom and handmade with affordable everyday pieces in the mix. It’s all about striking a good balance for me and not going too heavy in any one of those areas.”

Molly is inspired to create just by looking at different materials.

“I see a tile and can envision a bathroom based on that piece, or I see a piece of furniture and get inspired for cabinetry. We also just love working with people. Every person and space poses new challenges, and we love that in the end, we are bettering their quality of life and bringing happiness and functionality to their space.”

While it was difficult to pick just one place as her favorite area in her home, Molly narrowed it down to two rooms.

“I think I'd have to say my living and dining room, which all came together at the last minute. So many wonderful and creative people helped us out in these two rooms. Our table was put together by Urban Lumber Company from wood we had dried for three years at my dad’s farm. A local artist named Jordan Haley created the painting just for us and our palette. A-Frame Design collaborated with us on the custom coffee table. The dining hutch was a collaboration with our good friend, Phil, from Wheat and Waves. And the chairs were vintage and repurposed with new leather cushions. Nothing about these rooms was easy—the objects were very thought out and the product of a lot of creativity.”

As for her favorite feature of her home, it can be found in the kitchen.

“The kitchen cabinets were meant to feel less like cabinets and more like furniture with a lot of the detailing. I love the feet and the setback frames.”

Several furniture pieces were purchased from Golden and Pine.

“We love Golden and Pine. Not only does their store align stylistically with us, but we also love that their products are made by a

person and not mass produced at the lowest possible price in a factory.”

If you’re looking to go down the same path of remodeling, Molly has some tips.

“Be honest, work hard and see every mistake as a learning opportunity. This is our fifth personal home in our eight years of marriage. We have never intentionally tried to flip a house, but naturally we finish, sell and start a new project. We really just enjoy creating and utilize our personal homes as a testing ground for new contractors, new ideas or ways of doing things.”

Diners from across the region have made Marina Grog & Galley a popular destination since owner Jack Schwindler first turned an old boathouse into an upscale restaurant.

"We offer fine dining in a nautical atmosphere," Executive Chef Lance McFarland said. "It takes you back to the days when you were dating or just relaxing at the lake. Our customers come from across the metropolitan area. More than half of our business drive past 100 restaurants from Johnson County to come see us. We also are popular with people who live farther east and don't want to worry about traffic and parking in downtown Kansas City."

Alan and Gayle Switzer are regular customers. "Marina Grog & Galley is one of the best fine-dining seafood and steak restaurants in Kansas City, not to mention the spectacular view when dining on the water," Gayle said.

"It's a great lake experience."

Schwindler is synonymous with the lake in the minds of many residents and guests. In fact, he was the first baby born at Lake Lotawana and has been around the lake longer than the city itself. Milton Thompson developed the lake as a tourist destination, and the city was incorporated in 1958.

The restaurant building also predates the city. The Kaw Point Boat Co. built it in 1934, and at various times it has housed a gasoline supply company and a full-service marina. Schwindler opened Marina Grog & Galley in 1993.

McFarland has been there for 13 years and has been executive chef for the past five. He emphasizes that dining at the restaurant, which is open only for dinner, is an event.

"Our average turnaround times are about two hours," he said. "This is the time it takes to sit down, have a drink, enjoy dinner, dessert, and an after-dinner drink."

The restaurant is known for seafood and steak. One signature entree is luau lobster, which combines a broiled lobster tail, shrimp and scallops. It's one thing to eat on the waterfront in the heartland -- it's another to convince diners that seafood can be just as fresh in Kansas City as it is near the ocean.

"It's a misconception that you can't get good seafood here," McFarland said. "We order from Honolulu Fish Co. by 11 a.m., and the seafood arrives the next day."

Along with fresh fish flown in from Hawaii twice a week, he sources lobster tail from Canada, king crab legs from Alaska and salmon from New Zealand. Meat entrees include filet mignon, bone-in ribeye and pork medallions.

Nothing complements a good meal like the right bottle of wine, and McFarland takes pride not only in the restaurant's quality and selection but in the reasonable prices.

Marina Grog & Galley sells more wine from Caymus Vineyards in California's Napa Valley than any restaurant in Missouri.

"Our high-end wines have the best prices around," he said. "We make them affordable so guests will have more money to spend on their dinner. Diners can enjoy a good bottle or wine for much less than a comparable bottle would cost in the city."

Guests can expect to pay from $30 to $50 per person, excluding tips, and $100 is a good ballpark figure for an enjoyable evening for two. Several seating options are available, including tables with lake views and an outdoor patio when weather permits. The nautical theme includes a 500-gallon saltwater aquarium and two 500-gallon freshwater aquariums. The seating capacity is 300 when all of the areas are open. The banquet room, which has a private bar and kitchen, can seat as many as 60 guests for rehearsal dinners, holiday parties and other special events.

Marina Grog & Galley is open Tuesday through Sunday. The attire is business casual, and reservations are recommended but not required. On Tuesday through Thursday, he restaurant opens at 5:30 p.m. each evening, with the last seating at 8 p.m. Reservations can be made from 5:p.m to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday.

In the quarter-century since Schwindler had the idea to turn a boathouse into a restaurant, Marina Grog & Galley has built a large and loyal following of locals who dine there regularly and others who make it their go-to choice for special occasions.

"This is a special place that you will always remember," McFarland said. "The ambience is unlike any other restaurant in the area. It feels as if you are on vacation."'
