Are you limiting your investment success by letting emotions about market volatility control your decisions? We know that you’re more likely to find success, however you define it, if you have a plan in place. Your plan needs a defined purpose and vision, corresponding goals, and a timeline for measurement. But it’s not enough to just have a plan, you also have to trust your plan. When emotions take over, they can quickly steer you off course. That doesn't mean prudent changes can’t or won’t be made along the way to your goal, but without discipline, you may as well throw your plan out the window or not bother making one at all. This year has already taken us through some market ups and downs. After months of relative calm, extreme movement in the market can lead to confusion. Fluctuations can be unnerving and it’s very normal to have anxiety, especially when headlines are shouting doomsday predictions to get more attention. Understanding the potential causes of the volatility and having steps in place to get through the fluctuation can help ease your anxieties. What’s Behind the Fluctuation? One question I hope people ask themselves to keep perspective during market volatility is: Are companies really worth 2%, 3%, 5%, etc. less today than they were yesterday or last week? While sometimes there may be economic cause for companies to lose value, often the volatility is due to worry and speculation. When other investors exhibit emotional behavior, it can cause you to question whether you should follow that behavior. In those times, ask yourself… Have My Goals Changed? It’s important to keep a long-term perspective throughout your entire investment journey, not just when we experience market dips and your advisor tells you over and over to keep that long-term perspective. Why? Because in the short term, the market trades on fear, anxiety, greed and emotion. But over the long term, emotional investing levels out and economic fundamentals drive the market. Even in the short term volatility, the chances that you’re still on track to reach your end goal are high, but staying invested with that perspective usually gives you a better opportunity to make up for any short-term losses you might endure. Having a well-structured portfolio that contains a variety of investments, pursues individual objectives, and reflects personal risk tolerance is incredibly important. Where Are the Opportunities? Staying on course with your plan does not eliminate the opportunity to be flexible and look for opportunities during volatility. This is an action item we manage on behalf of our clients, but DIY investors should stay mindful that opportunity can come at all times. After the August 2011 correction, the S&P 500 had gained 25% just a year later. With the right tools and questions, you can help settle your emotions and stay on track for personal success. I love decorating and remodeling, and, as I have shared before, having a contractor as a father has definitely influenced my love of transforming spaces. He taught us all how to do it ourselves, and, to this day, my dad will come over in a heartbeat to help with a project that needs an extra hand or is out of our league. As much as I have learned about remodeling from him, one of the biggest lessons that my parents taught me in life was how to make a house a loving and inviting home. When it’s all said and done, what really matters most about my house is how people feel when inside. For my family, I want it to

The quaint Homestead Cabin with its hand-hewn log walls was built in 1874. The Cottage, a Prairie Victorian home, built in the 1920s, features a large wraparound porch for relaxed reading or conversation. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE “BARGAIN MANSIONS?” It’s a hybrid of shows in that I do a lot of the work myself and with my dad. Shows are either construction-based or design-based. Most aren’t with the host being both the contractor and the designer, but I’m doing both because it’s my passion. Marrying those two things is what makes our show unique. DO YOU SELL YOUR FURNISHINGS WITH THE HOMES? Yes. We have a big open house and showcase one of the homes in the season and have all the stock right there to sell. It’s a nod back to what I used to do in my own home. DO YOU HAVE ANY DESIGNERS THAT INSPIRE YOU? I’m inspired by Kelly Wersler, Studio McGee, Sara Noble, Emily Henderson, Barbara Cosgrove, Mark Sudderman and Kerri Frazier. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ROOM IN YOUR HOME? My living room. It’s true to me in that it’s laid-back but has several touches of luxe that make it very warm and cozy. It’s family-friendly with lots of texture and layers. With four kids, we can’t have anything too precious, but I manage to keep it all beautiful in spite of all the action this room gets. IS THERE ANYTHING YOU HAVEN’T SHARED BEFORE? I’ve never really talked in detail about what it’s like filming. I was insanely nervous the first time they brought cameras in and am still amazed anybody thought I could do this. I was so out of my comfort zone. It’s been a testament to Matt Antrim, my executive producer, and how he makes everyone on set comfortable. He’s hysterical and a joy to work with always. I’d love to give credit to the whole production crew. Nobody sees how hard they work and how they care so much about it being just right. It’s been eye-opening for me, being a stay-athome mom five years ago and walking into this working life slowly and steadily. Growing and having all these colleagues in an industry I’ve never been a part of has been amazing. It has widened my world for the better.

WE WERE ALWAYS DELIGHTED WHEN OUR GRANDMOTHER AND AUNTIES MADE POINT WITH PORK FOR SUNDAY DINNER. We have such great memories of sharing this and other delicious meals around the dinner table as we grew up in our Italian family. This is one of my all-time favorites as this dish brings back so many fond memories for me, my brothers and our childhood growing up.

DICED PORK SAUCE WITH POLENTA + 4 to 5 boneless pork loin chops (1 1/2 inches thick) + 1/2 teaspoon sage + 1 cup onions, diced + 1/2 teaspoon marjoram + 4 to 5 garlic cloves, minced + 1/2 teaspoon thyme + 4 tablespoon olive oil + 1/4 teaspoon cayenne + 1 tablespoon sesame oil + 4 to 5 bay leaves + 1 cup diced tomatoes + 1/4 cup dry white wine + 1/2 cup mushrooms, sliced and sautéed + 48 ounces quality chicken stock + 3/4 cup browned flour* + 3/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped 1. Cut pork into 3/4-inch cubes. Sauté onion in hot butter and oil about 10 minutes. Remove onion and set aside. Leave oil in pan. Add the diced meat and brown lightly, about 20 minutes. Pan bottom will begin to pick up a little color. Add garlic and the cooked onions. Add chicken stock, bay leaves, sage,

Add handful of chopped parsley. BROWNED FLOUR: You can make this ahead. Keep in refrigerator. Place 1 cup flour in an 8-inch skillet at very low temperature. Keep mixing and heating until flour is dark beige. May take about 2 hours on low heat. Burns quickly and needs constant attention should you decide to use high heat. I've found that microwaving the flour in a shallow dish in 1-or 2- minute intervals, stirring between each interval, produces browned flour, as well. POLENTA: Polenta is available in most grocery stores, however, this is my favorite way to prepare polenta. In a small bowl, whisk together 1 cup yellow cornmeal and 1 cup water. In a medium saucepan, bring 3 1/4 cups water, 2 teaspoons salt and 1/8 teaspoon ground pepper to a rapid boil. Gradually stir in cornmeal mixture. Reduce heat to simmer, stirring frequently until mixture is thick, 5 to 8 minutes. Remove

marriage is roughly about the same as the cost to get into the marriage. Why that is probably has more to do with the emotional willingness of parties to pay for something that is joyous (like a wedding) versus something not as joyous (like a divorce).
