Lifestyle Letter

Letter from the Editor

OCTOBER 2017

M

y oldest child started his freshman year of high school this fall and is running cross-country. I have always enjoyed cheering him on and watching him run, but I have such a deeper appreciation and love for this sport after experiencing what it means to be part of a high school crosscountry team. The sportsmanship, camaraderie, encouragement from upperclassmen and the peer support for each other throughout every step of a race has left me so inspired and proud to be part of something so positive and dynamic.

The thing that impresses me the most is the attitude and culture across the board with every school at every meet. These kids are a tight group and want the utmost success for their own school, but there is a sense of respect and appreciation for all runners regardless of where they are finishing and what school they are from. To see competing schools cheering in unison to encourage a struggling runner who isn’t from their own school or congratulating the success of a competitor at the medal ceremony is something I see on a regular basis, and it is such a lesson that can be applied in so many areas of life. The lesson to strive for greatness and reach your personal best, but to appreciate the good others are doing is so worthwhile. This month we are revealing our winners from our Readers' Choice competition, and I couldn’t help but think about my takeaway from high school cross-country when working on this issue. The winning businesses should be very proud of this accomplishment, and we commend each one of them for a job well done, but to even be nominated for this is a huge honor and shows the support and love of your business by the community. In every category, all businesses nominated were in good company, and regardless if you are the winning business or a runner-up, we can all celebrate each other from the “sidelines” for a job well done. Congratulations to our winners! We celebrate each one of you in this issue.

ational barbecue champion Rob Magee serves his award-winning wood-fire grilled fare at Q39. Named

after its first location off of 39th Street in Midtown that opened in 2014, they recently expanded with their second location in southern Overland Park in August. It's noteworthy how quickly Q39 became a force in one of the world's most competitive barbecue markets. Within just a couple of years, the urban rustic restaurant with its expansive dining room, full-service bar, high ceilings and innovative open kitchen expertly and efficiently serving food made from scratch has vaulted to the top, proving itself to be a major player in the Kansas City barbecue scene. Rob was hooked on cooking at an early age, earning a degree from the prestigious Culinary Institute of America and working in the finest kitchens across the country, honoring the tastes of each region he was in. Barbecue became his main focus after making the move to Kansas City in 2001. What started as just a hobby on weekends, Rob, his wife, Kelly, and team known as the Munchin' Hogs would compete in dozens of barbecue competitions across the country, taking home numerous awards. With his years of experience and drive for success, he turned his dream of owning a full-service restaurant into reality in April 2014. CONTINUED >

Q Food & Wine

(CON TI N U ED)

One bite is all it takes to understand why

guests keep coming back for more. There's not a microwave in sight to reheat anything,

ever. Skilled cooks grill steaks, chops, burgers and seafood to order with proven com-

petition barbecue recipes that have won the highest awards in the nation.

If you've never had the pleasure of

tasting Q39 barbecue, Rob describes it as "layers of flavor, sweet, fruit and spice, which complement the flavors of the rub and smoked meat."

The secret? Nothing is left to chance.

Sauces and rubs are mixed from fresh dried herbs and spices, perfected and written

to the gram. Meat is smoked for six hours, wrapped and finished in smokers for an additional two hours for maximum moisture

retention. The meat is then sliced, plated and served immediately. It's like clockwork.

Deciding what to order is a daunting task,

so take advice from the chef himself. He

says their pork belly and sausage corn dogs

39

served with classic barbecue sauce and

maple syrup, bacon-wrapped shrimp served with jalapeno-cilantro slaw and chipotle

mayo, and their burnt end burger made with oak-wood grilled ground brisket and certified

black angus beef on a toasted bun topped

with sliced burnt ends, spicy pickle slaw and classic sauce top the list of most popular items guests need to try.

Rob says Q39 is diligent in keeping qual-

ity, consistent standards.

"We utilize continuous process improve-

ment with our state-of-the-art temperature-controlled butcher room and large capacity smokers," he says. "We never stop the quest for improvement and enjoy constantly researching to try new things and keep up with trends to offer our customers new, fun and exciting food."

If you don't have time to come in and sit

down, place your order 24 hours in advance to take your Q2GO from a separate dedicated entrance, or have Q39 cater your next event. For more information, visit Q39KC.com.

How long do we wait for a court judgment in Family Law? Stange Law Firm, PC

Going through a divorce or family law matter can be a tough experience. In some cases, parties are not able to settle their case and the case goes to trial. Trials in a divorce or family law matter can sometimes be done in a day. In other cases, a divorce or family law matter can take multiple days based on the circumstances. The more complex the case, the more time it might take to have the case heard. After a trial finally ends, many wonder how long it will take for the judge to make their decision. Many have watched courtroom television shows and may think that the judge rules from the bench at the end of the trial. If that does not happen, many can become very disappointed. The reality is that every situation is different. What happens can vary greatly based on the jurisdiction, venue and the judge who has heard the case. Thus, it is vital that a party speak to an attorney who is licensed and competent to practice law in their jurisdiction.

But in a general sense, parties oftentimes need to temper their expectations in terms of the length of time it takes for a judge to issue a judgment. In many instances, it can take a judge weeks, if not months, to enter a decision after the conclusion of a divorce or family law trial. When parties hear this, many are confused and dismayed. Many ask, “Why does it take so long many ask?” or “Why can’t the judge just rule from the bench after the trial?” Truth be told, the judge might not have made up their mind after the trial. They might need some time to think it over. If there was a lot of evidence submitted, the judge may need the time to review it all. The judge may want to go back and review the trial transcript as it relates to certain evidence. Judges also may have to make specific legal findings and findings of fact in a written judgment pursuant to the laws in the state in which the case was heard. Thus, it might be inappropriate for the judge to rule from the bench without issuing a written judgment that explains what they found and what law was relied upon. Some judges might feel that they may be better able to explain what their findings are in a

written judgment versus trying to explain it from the bench. There is also a risk as well that parties might be better able to understand the judge’s decision by reading it some time later versus hearing it when emotions are still high right after a trial has ended. Judges also can hear many cases, have busy dockets and other important items on their agenda, etc. This can result in a waiting period as well. These are just a few reasons why the waiting time for a judgment may vary. Stange Law Firm, PC limits their practice to family law matters including divorce, child custody, child support, paternity, guardianship, adoption, juvenile matters, collaborative law and other domestic relation matters. Stange Law Firm, PC gives clients 24/7 access to their case through a secured online case tracker found on the website. They also give their clients their cell phone numbers. Stange Law Firm, PC understands the emotions that can come from a divorce or family law matter. No matter the family law issue you face, we are here to help you rebuild your life. his breathtaking Johnson County home is packed with charm and functional style. Built in February 2017, the owners, Scott and Molly Koenigsdorf, chose this 1-acre location because it sits on the same street as Molly's childhood home. Brimming with nostalgia, this home feels welcoming and ready to make a lifetime of memories in.

The arched cased openings throughout the first floor have a very traditional yet clean style, and they add to the great millwork in the home. The owners have two favorite rooms in the house. The office, which is warm and inviting, is a great place to escape to get some work done. “I love that it has a fireplace flanked by a French door on either side with transom windows above,” Molly says. The second favorite spot and a gathering place for all is the kitchen. “I’m not the best or most frequent cook, but we do love to entertain," Molly says. "I don’t think I would change a thing, as it has everything that I’ve ever wanted in a kitchen. The arch hood, walnut island, marble counters and glass uppers are all classic finishes that I hope to love for many years to come." This six-bedroom home took nine months to build, and the homeowner did all of the design and furnishings throughout the home herself. 44

The Best

Apple Crumb Muffins

THE BEST APPLE CRUMB MUFFINS CRUMB MIX INGREDIENTS:

⅓ cup brown sugar 1 tb granulated sugar 1 tsp cinnamon ¼ cup unsalted butter (melted) ⅔ cup all-purpose flour MUFFIN INGREDIENTS:

½ cup unsalted butter (softened) ½ cup dark brown sugar ¼ cup granulated sugar 2 eggs, room temperature ½ cup sour cream 2 tsp vanilla extract 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp baking powder ½ tsp salt ¼ cup milk 2 small apples, chopped INSTRUCTIONS:

Preheat oven to 425 degrees and grease muffin pan. In a small bowl, make the crumb topping. Combine both sugars, cinnamon and melted butter. Fold in the flour until it’s all coated. The mixture will be thick. Set aside. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and cinnamon in a medium bowl. Set aside. In the bowl of a stand mixer with the paddle attachment, or with handheld beaters, beat the butter on high until smooth. Add the sugars and beat on high until combined. Add the eggs one at a time, the sour cream and vanilla extract. Beat on medium speed for one minute until the texture is smooth. With hopes for easy removal from the muffin tin, this recipe was baked in a Trudeau silicone muffin pan. It made baking so simple by eliminating paper liners and ensuring easy muffin removal. Simply push up the muffins under the pan and – voila! No more muffins that crumble or stick to the pan! The pan also cools off super quickly.

Add the dry ingredients and beat on low speed, being careful not to over mix. Add the milk and combine on low speed. Gently fold in the apples. Spoon the muffin batter into the muffin pan’s cups, filling each cup to the top. Top with the crumb topping being sure to pat the topping down to ensure it stays on the muffin. Bake for 5 minutes and then turn the temperature down to 350 degrees and bake for another 20-25 minutes. The muffins should be golden on top, and a toothpick stuck in the middle should come out clean. Let cool off a bit and enjoy!
