E

ven though I don’t love frigid temperatures, December is by far my favorite month of the year. The excitement and magic of watching my kids experience all of our family holiday traditions is so much fun, and the anticipation of Christmas morning makes me still feel like a kid. I absolutely love every part of it, and I think I have just as hard of a time falling asleep on Christmas Eve as my kids do, because I can’t wait to see their faces light up the next morning.

My oldest child is most like how I was on Christmas Eve. I hear him get up several times throughout the night to check out the stockings and to shake presents (I pretend I don't hear him), and then he sneaks back to bed, only to get back up an hour later to do the same thing. The anticipation is just too much for him.

One of the things I marvel at regarding my childhood Christmas tree is my mom’s ability to leave the tree just as we decorated it. (I have 9 siblings, so the tree was a hot mess after we were done adorning it with decor.) Our favorite thing about decorating that tree was stringing tons of popcorn strands. I still can remember the numbing pain of sticking my fingers a million times, but it was worth it. By the time Christmas morning finally came around, the majority of the popcorn that once decorated the tree was eaten off the strand. (Yes, my mom fed us….we apparently liked the taste of stale popcorn). That tree was quite the sight, and makes me smile every time I think of it.

I love to get caught up in all of the fun that comes with the holidays like visits with Santa, making gingerbread houses, looking at holiday light displays, ice-skating, ugly christmas sweater parties, shopping for gifts and so on. However, I always hope that I instill in my family the true meaning of Christmas and the spirit of giving during the holiday season, especially to those in need.

Whatever your December holidays and traditions are, I hope you enjoy the beauty of the season around KC. The lights and festivities around the city are plentiful and there is so much to do for whatever walk of life you are in.

Angi Hockett PVC HOLIDAY WREATH 14

Supplies needed: -PVC Pipe in assorted sizes.

In this wreath I used varying sizes from 1/2 inch to 4 inches in diameter.

-Clear PVC cement -Spray paint of your color 1.

Cut

all

your PVC into 4 inch sections. This can be done with a chop saw or hack saw. Any hardware store can also cut these pipes. The most important part when cutting is to make sure all the cuts are straight and level.

2. Arrange the pieces around a circular object such as a saucer, tape roll, or small paint can. The pieces should be placed in a random but circular pattern.

3. In a well ventilated area fasten all pipes together using the PVC cement. Make sure to squeeze each section for a few seconds to ensure a good bond. Let the wreath dry completely before trying to move it.

4. Spray paint all sides and angles then let dry. Add ornaments of your choice to a few random pipes.

You can display your new wreath several different ways. Leaning it on the fireplace mantel amongst a bit of greenery would be festive. It can be hung on a wall by using a long screw preferably into a stud, then simply hooking a pipe section on the screw. If you are wanting to hang your wreath on the front door hanger you will need to drill a small hole in a pipe on each side, then loop a 14 inch strip of twine or rope through the drilled hold and tie a knot.

However you choose to display this wreath it is sure to be a conversation piece and you can be proud it was created all by YOU! Merry Christmas!

Matt Staub’s work trip grows from documenting to sponsorship ARTICLE PETE DULIN | PHOTOGRAPHY MATT STAUB

M

att Staub, founder of marketing agency Proxima, snapped hundreds of photographs and recorded video once he and members of Children International set foot in Ecuador.

Staub and the Children International (CI) team made their way to the nonprofit’s community center in Guayquil, Quito, as part of a nineday trip. Located high in the foothills of the Andean mountains, the center is a safe haven to kids from dangerous environments. The threat of gang recruitment, violence, and drugs exists just beyond the doorstep in communities enveloped by poverty.

“The community center is a safe place for kids.

It is truly an oasis,” says Staub. “It’s not safe on the streets. We have a posse that travels with us. The streets are in disrepair. There are dirt roads and trash in impoverished neighborhoods. Homes are plywood shacks and brick.”

Headquartered in south Kansas City, Children International serves nearly 300,000 impoverished children and youth in 10 countries around the world. Their community centers provide services such as medical and dental

clinics, pharmacies, libraries, computer labs, activity spaces and multipurpose rooms.

On this trip, Staub’s role involved teaming with CI to show the impact of its centers and sponsorship by donors on the lives of children and the community. He began working with the nonprofit in January 2016, helping them refine a social media strategy and develop content.

Staub and the CI team visited the center in Guayquil and other towns. He conducted video interviews with people from the community as well as capturing imagery that shows their daily lives.

Shortly after arrival, Staub, CI staff members, and teenagers broke into a game of soccer in the courtyard of the community center.

Preconceptions of Guayquil and its people formed and observed from the internet, a plane window, or tour bus change once interaction begins face-to-face.

“I felt like I knew a lot, but I knew nothing until I was there. We apply our paradigm. You can’t imagine being lower on the hierarchy of needs,” says Staub. “I didn’t know anything until I spoke with the kids at the community center. I have never CONTINUED > been to a country like this.”

CI helps to break the cycle of poverty by enlisting people to sponsor a child and donate funds that go toward programs and activities that help these children.

Community center team members work with volunteers and sponsors to help the children. From the outside, Staub understood the mission of CI and the importance of its efforts to change the quite real circumstances behind the statistics. Still, he wasn’t fully prepared for what to expect when he met the children for the first time.

“The kids don’t know their circumstances,” says Staub. “They are excited and want to have fun. It puts perspective on the basic needs of life.

Recognizing this distinction as a storyteller is important. Staub’s intent was not to cast sad-eyed children in a stereotypical role––the voiceless kids seen on late-night commercials while brooding, heart-tugging messages and music deliver a call to action.

“CI wants to tell their stories in an upbeat, hopeful way that is authentic,” says Staub.

The youth served at CI’s centers learn about the fundamentals of hygiene and healthy habits. Students receive assistance with school fees, uniforms, supplies, tutoring and scholarships so they may complete secondary education and advance further.

Youth at all ages learn empowering skills of leadership, teamwork, and confidence.

Kids eventually grow into teenagers that need assistance, so they can gain employment and become future leaders in their community. CI helps them prepare with mock interviews, résumé writing, connecting with jobs, earning scholarships for college, or vocational training.

Before arriving in Quito, Staub was not a sponsor of a child. That status changed when he met Jordin, a seven-year-old boy eager to try speaking English.

“Many kids are looking for a father figure,” says Staub. “A sponsor has a one-toone relationship with a child.”

After spending time with Jordin and seeing CI’s operations firsthand, Staub decided

he would become Jordin’s sponsor. “After one week, I was thoroughly impressed with the center, staff, and the kids,” he says.

Back in the United States, Staub is working with CI to create images, videos, and stories that explain the nonprofit’s purpose and role. He is also completing steps toward becoming Jordin’s sponsor. His belief in the impact of the organization, and his personal commitment remains firm.

“Given our luxuries, we can make an outsized difference through CI’s efficient programs for a small outlay,” says Staub. “The impact is pretty amazing. Everyone should travel to meet people at their community center and see what CI does.”

Even as he sifted through photographs and shared details of his first trip to Quito, Staub reiterated his decision to return to CI’s community center in Ecuador.

“I made lasting friendships,” he says. “You connect strongly with the community in a way a tourist can’t.”

The American Youth Ballet is the premiere classical ballet performing company based in Overland Park, Kansas that prides itself on a standard of excellence in performances throughout the region. Founded by Dennis and Kathy Landsman in 1979, the not for profit studio serves as an educational charity by creating a space for young dancers to learn and grow all while sharing music and dance with the community. The company is comprised of pre-professional Kansas City area dancers ranging from 10 to 19 years old, training in a special regiment of ballet, pointe, pas de deux, and modern to prepare dancers for careers in top companies across the country. Training at the American Dance Center school, the studio holds open auditions for dancers all over the metro, so everyone has a chance to participate in performances. The company has produced six new full length ballets and over 50 smaller mixed repertory pieces in the last eight seasons alone under the direction of Jennifer Tierney and Kristopher Estes-Brown. The company's audience and repertory continue to grow.

With a strong background in dance, Tierney started her training with the Deane Dance Center in Sacramento, and then went on to the Ballet West Conservatory in Salt Lake City.

She has been in numerous performances with leading roles and has taught in several training schools across the country. Now as a teacher and director at AYB, Tierney's teaching style revolves around the path that she sees for each individual young dancer. Her teaching inspiration comes in every single face she is so lucky to see each week. "I am a part of their lives for such a long time. I see them learn, grow, and am their teacher sometimes from age three all the way to their teenage years. It's an incredible experience. The reason why I so strongly believe that ballet is amazing for young people is because it requires so much hard work, discipline, and focus. Ballet presents obstacles that mirror real life situations. They get the chance to learn how to overcome them in a nurturing environment at a young age. Watching a young person's face light up as they understand a concept or accomplish a step for the first time is the reason why I teach. That's all the inspiCONTINUED > ration I need."

The Nutcracker cast has just over 200 roles, many of which are double, sometimes triple cast in order to give more students the opportunity to perform and try different character roles. Tierney wants every young artist involved to get the most enriching experience possible at AYB. Their traditional version of The Nutcracker is choreographed by Tierney's husband, Kristopher Estes-Brown. "The musicality and staging is so intricate and interesting you could easily attend several performances and find something different to enjoy each time" said Tierney. "Estes-Brown has an incredible talent to make the stage come to life in each and every scene."

The Nutcracker is brought to life with the Overland Park Orchestra, which has performed live with the American Youth Ballet for several years now under the direction of Jim Funkhouser, the conductor for the 40+ group of musicians. "We are so fortunate to have the Overland Park Orchestra. They add so much to the experience that only live music can add" said Tierney. "Funkhouser is a huge supporter of AYB, and we are incredibly lucky and thankful for him and all the musicians' talent."

The American Youth Ballet is active in community outreach. Each year, over 10,000 people are affected by the studio's community programs that bring their performances directly to public schools at no cost.

The tours are often paired with classroom lessons to educate students and build cultural awareness and appreciation of the arts. fun holiday tradition amongst friends is a good ol' cookie exchange. It's a great excuse to get together and then return home with a plethora of sweet treats and festive goodies.

I often want a big selection of baked goods around the house in December for family and guests, but often run out of time to make a huge variety, so a cookie exchange is exactly what I need. When it comes to a cookie swap, the more really is the merrier, because it means more baked goods for everyone. To welcome the season, we hosted our own cookie exchange, and CONTINUED > are sharing the recipes with you.

Amanda’s Sugar Cookie - no chill dough (adapted from Wilton Sugar Cookie recipe) Ingredients: Yields 24-27 medium cookies 1/2 cup unsalted butter 1/2 cup crisco 1 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1 egg 1 tsp. vanilla 1/2 tsp almond 1/8 tsp butter 2 3/4 cup flour 2 tsp baking powder 1 tsp salt 1 TBS of milk as needed Instructions: Preheat Oven to 400 degrees. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy.

Next Beat in egg and extracts. Mix flour, baking powder and salt in a large measuring cup. Add mixture 1 cup at a time to mixing bowl. Do not chill dough, roll out to 1/8 to 1/4 in. thick on a powdered surface (1/2 flour, 1/2 powdered sugar), dip cookie cutter in flour/powdered sugar mixture before cutting out cookies. Bake 5 1/2 to 7 minutes or until lightly golden brown on edges.

Wilton Royal Sugar Cookie Icing (Stiff Consistency) Yield 3 cups Ingredients: 3 Level TBS Meringue Powder 4 cups (1 lb.) Sifted Powdered Sugar 5-6 TBS lukewarm water Place Powdered Sugar and Meringue Powder in a bowl. Stir or mix on low speed until blended.

Add water and mix 7-10 minutes. Icing will be stiff consistency. Slowly add small amounts of water until desired consistency has been reached. For thin royal icing add 1 tsp of water per cup of icing. * I add to the recipe my desired flavoring. 1- 1/2 tsp total. Vanilla, Almond and Butter taste great.

Peanut Butter Balls Ingredients: 2 Cups creamy peanut butter 1/2 Cup butter 1 teaspoon vanilla 4 Cups Powdered Sugar 3 Cups Rice Krispies cereal 2 Cups Semi sweet chocolate chips or melting chocolate optional: 1/2 tsp.almond extract Instructions: Melt peanut butter, butter and vanilla in a sauce pan over low heat. In a large bowl, mix Rice Krispies and powdered sugar well. Pour peanut butter mixture over cereal mixture and blend well. Form into 1 inch or smaller balls, put on a baking sheet and chill (overnight if possible). Melt chocolate in double boiler, being careful not to overlook. Use teaspoon to dip balls into melted chocolate and put back on cookie sheet. Keep chilled until firm.

Spritz Cookies Ingredients: 1 Cup butter, softened 1/2 Cup sugar 1 egg 2 1/2 Cups flour 1/4 Teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon almond extract You can also add food coloring if you like.

Instructions: Heat oven to 400*F. In a large bowl, beat butter, sugar and egg with mixer on medium. Stir in remaining ingredients.place dough in cookie press. On increased cookie sheet, press out desired forms. Bake 5-8 minutes or until set but not brown. Immediately remove from cookie sheet and cool completely. Makes about 5 dozen (small) cookies.

Grandma’s Caramel Cookie Bars 1 16oz. package caramels 2cups flour 1/3 cup milk 2 cups rolled oats 1 1/2 cups dark brown sugar 1tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. salt 1 egg 1 cup soft butter 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips 1 cup chopped nuts Instructions: Place caramels and milk in a double boiler, melt over low heat, stirring till the mixture is a smooth sauce. Set aside. Mix together the flour, oats, brown sugar, soda, salt,egg and soft butter until coarse crumbs are formed. Press half of mixture into greased 9x13 pan and bake 10 minutes at 350 degrees. Remove from oven and sprinkle chocolate chips and pecans over the top. Pour caramel sauce over the chips and nuts. Then drop remaining dry mixture over the top. Bake an additional 20 minutes.

Rosemary Pomegranate Mimosas

Ingredients: ½ cup pomegranate seeds 6-8 sprigs of rosemary pomegranate juice 1 bottle of champagne Instructions: Add 1 tablespoon of pomegranate seeds, a rosemary sprig, and 1½ oz of pomegranate juice to each glass. Top with champagne. Serve!

Turtle Fudge (from Live Well Bake Often) INGREDIENTS 3 cups semisweet chocolate chips 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk 2 tablespoons butter 1 cup chopped pecans 30 soft caramel candies, unwrapped 3 tablespoons heavy cream INSTRUCTIONS: Line an 8x8 baking pan with aluminum foil, making sure to leave some overhang for easy removal. Lightly grease the sides of the foil in the pan (to prevent the caramel from sticking to the foil) and set aside. Add the chocolate chips, sweetened condensed milk, and butter to a large saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring well until the mixture is completely smooth. Add in the chopped pecans and stir until fully combined. Set aside. Add the caramel candies and heavy cream to a microwave safe bowl. Microwave in 20-30 second increments, stirring well after each increment, until the mixture is melted and smooth. Add half of the fudge to the prepared baking pan and smooth it out. Add all of the caramel on top and evenly distribute it on top of the fudge. Add the remaining half of the fudge and spread it out evenly over the caramel.

Transfer fudge to the refrigerator for 3-4 hours (or overnight) or until the fudge is solid enough to cut into squares. Cut into small pieces and enjoy!

he goldsmith’s art and craft date back to the Middle Ages, when the prosperous looked for ways to refine their gold and create beautiful jewelry.

Scott’s Diamond Designs in Overland Park is owned by Scott Wagner, a goldsmith. Since 1982, Scott and his wife Monica have owned the jewelry store where they provide jewelry and gem solutions for Johnson County residents. Their daughter Tamara Wainscott joins them in the business.

“Our growth and success have come from word of mouth advertising,” said Tamara. “Customers know we sell top quality stones at fair prices.” The Wagner's choose to stock only GIA diamonds, assuring their customers the best stones on the market. The GIA, Gemological Institute of America, is an independent organization recognized worldwide which protects customers buying gems and jewelry through research, education and laboratory services.

Fully half of Scott’s Diamond Design is dedicated to bridal and engagement sets. The Wagner's see current trends of traditional diamond solitaires with crisscross bands. Many of today’s brides are selecting two-tone golds, combining rose and white or yellow/white creations. “When my fiancé Cole and I came into Scott’s Diamond Designs, we immediately felt at home,” said Sara Norris. “Scott treated us like family, and Cole really appreciated his expertise.”

The store also offers colored gemstones, pearls and sterling. They specialize in modern jewelry, diamond earrings and pendants in every price range. “We’re seeing bangles and bracelets becoming popular,” said Tamara. “For younger women, we are selling pendants with rectangular shapes, and layering short and long necklaces is really popular now.”

A good deal of Scott’s service involves jewelry repair, which requires a knowledge of design, casting techniques, and valuation for precious stones and metals, including silver and platinum. An independent jeweler, Scott performs all work in his store, and he prides himself on a quick turnaround, a personal touch, and attention to detail.

“We have found that quality sells---resulting in generations of customers,” said Scott.

“Our services include everything from re-sizing and repairs to commission pieces where we help a customer create a legacy piece.”

“My husband and I first met Scott 40 years ago when he was working as a jeweler in Mission,” said Sondra Gilmore. “He is the nicest, most respectable, honest person we have ever done business with.”

Women in the 40-60 age range make up Scott’s largest group of customers. “Many of our patrons are looking to re-design their wedding rings to an updated style,” said Tamara.

“My husband asked Scott to make a ring for me when we were newly married,” said Sondra. “Years later, he saw a cross that we bought in Europe and remade it using real gold.

Scott can take any piece of jewelry and remake it into something more beautiful.”

“Then there are the young moms. Push gifts are big!” said Tamara. “Often a new father will come in and choose a small ring for the mother with the baby’s birthstone.” Scott’s Diamond Designs also carries the designer POSH Mommy line, ideal for the new family.

From today’s fashion trends to heirloom settings, Scott’s Diamond Designs encompasses it all. Many of the tools Scott uses are like those from centuries ago. His artistic eye and the tools of the trade result in intricate, unique designs.
