We look forward to seeing you, Kristy & JJ Ortega
Hello friends,
I first noted her unusual obsession when my daughter was in middle school. She would disappear into her bedroom for hours, emerging only to reload on snacks: banana chips, strawberries, grapes and Gushers. We could hear things bumping across her floor, long periods of silence followed by a thud. We tried to give her space and a wide berth. Middle school was a rollercoaster of emotions, friendships and academic challenges. She was finding herself. Defining her style.
The affliction?
Chronic furniture rearranging.
She would move her bed (and the treasures underneath), redecorate bookcases, relocate her desk (more treasures), organize her closet and embellish the window treatments. There were always scarves involved. It was therapeutic and provided immediate gratification. And, she was honing her personal style, a quirky combination of trends, cast offs and crafts. Last month, she and her partner moved from New York City to Atlanta, renting a bungalow in East Lake (facing the 18th hole of East Lake Golf Course). As I write this, she is unpacking, finding new walls for their art, repositioning furniture (again) and nesting. She would say this comes naturally, having moved house eight times before leaving for college. She is a master of reorganizing (she attacked my pantry when home from college for Christmas break), the queen of change. I’m very proud of her ability to bounce and in awe of her resilience and personal flair.
If you're still honing your personal style, unsure of where to turn, the team at Tribeca Furniture offers "turnkey interior design," where your tastes are translated into home design. Handy!
Enjoy this issue and flex your creative muscle!

Every day, a heartbreaking reality unfolds: 47 children are diagnosed with cancer, and seven lose their lives to this devastating disease.
The Couch family knows this pain firsthand. Their dear friend’s daughter, Ava, a vibrant 4-year-old, was diagnosed with Stage 4 Undifferentiated Sarcoma in 2010. Despite her courage and the family’s unwavering support, Ava tragically passed away just months later.
Too many families endure the unimaginable pain of a childhood cancer diagnosis. Every September, during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Regan and Cal Couch find ways to support families with children fighting childhood cancer.
“It could be my family or yours,” says Regan, “since Ava’s death, we have made it our mission to bring awareness to the fact that childhood cancer doesn’t discriminate. No one thinks about children getting cancer until it devastates a family close to you. There are so many great organizations and companies that have done their part to raise awareness, but we choose to partner with the Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research, because 93% of every dollar donated supports Rally’s mission to find a cure and help families during their fight.”
One local source of inspiration for everyone involved in the fight against childhood cancer is Rally Kid Elena Howard, a 4 year old from Milton. In January of 2022, when she was just 2 years old, Elena was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. After a tough two and a half year battle, she is now beating cancer and just rang the bell in June!
Since 2005, Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research (Rally) has made it their mission to raise funds for childhood cancer research and support affected families. Unlike adult cancers, childhood cancers require specialized research. Yet, less than 8% of the National Institutes of Health’s cancer research budget is dedicated to this critical area. Rally has awarded over $35 million in childhood cancer research grants and helped secure an additional $223 million in new federal funding for research.
“Our mission to fund the most promising research for childhood cancer would be impossible without the commitment of supporters like the Couch family,” says Rally founder and CEO, Dean Crowe. “It is truly inspiring to witness a community come together to help families facing the childhood cancer beast and we are forever grateful!”
Regan and Cal’s children share their parents’ passion for childhood cancer awareness. This year, they’re placing gold bows on donors’ mailboxes, to support Rally and the #GoldStrong for Childhood Cancer Awareness campaign.
“We rally for Ava’s memory and for every child fighting this dreadful disease, including local Rally Kids like Elena. We hope you will join us this September and beyond in the fight against childhood cancer!”
“We’ve placed a gold bow on our mailbox for years, but many people may not know the reason,” says Cal. “This year, we are committed to changing that. Huntley (14) and Kennedy (7) will knock on doors in the community to raise awareness and ask for donations. I think it’s an invaluable lesson to teach them. The least we can do is spread awareness and let these families know that they aren’t alone in the fight to find a cure.”

VOLUNTEERS (AND DONORS) BRING RECOVERY TO THE WATER.

Sylvia Huron is Executive Director of Reeling in Serenity
Now in its third year as a nonprofit, Reeling in Serenity is introducing more people in active recovery from substance use disorder (SUD) to the healing properties of fly fishing. Reeling in Serenity 501(c)(3) hosts free, all-day retreats where guests are paired with fly fishing guides, then learn the basics and experience the thrill of catch-and-release fishing. Guides, instructors and meeting facilitators, as well as staff and board, are all volunteers, fueled by the tight community fly fishing fosters and a desire to support those recovering from SUD.
“The stories shared at the start of every retreat, the immediate community and fierce focus that fly fishing requires provides a unique opportunity for healing,” says Sylvia Huron, co-founder and executive director for Reeling in Serenity. “The benefits are profound, giving hope and healing for our retreat guests. And honestly for all of us who volunteer as well.”
Since its inception, Reeling in Serenity 501(c)(3) has hosted dozens of guests on rivers in Georgia, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania, and this year will add retreats in Colorado and Montana. All guides, program coordinators and staff volunteer their time to teach basic knots, casting and entomology after an hour of sharing and fellowship. Guests are then paired with a guide for a one-on-one fly fishing experience complete with waders, boots and gear.
Reeling in Serenity’s work is funded by donations. They host an annual fundraiser each September: an online auction with fresh and saltwater fly fishing trips,
guided trips in national parks and on rivers coast to coast, custom rods, high-tech gear, assortments of hand-tied flies and art inspired by fly fishing, books, and much more. Among this year’s highlights is an amazing seven-day, six-night, all-inclusive trip to Lago Frío in Chilean Patagonia for one angler hosted by Chile Trout Patagonia, a unique opportunity to join the Flylords team for a day on an upcoming episode of their Fly Shop Tour, and a beautiful acrylic on canvas entitled “Manistee River Steelhead” by renowned artist Sarah Landström. And there’s so much more.
“Our annual auction fuels all we do,” says Sylvia. “Your bids help us continue to host retreats that are open to those who have chosen the path of recovery. We also serve as a safe space and resource for the sober fly angler doing the work one day at a time.”
Reeling in Serenity was founded by friends who met fly fishing and discovered they shared something in common. They were all in recovery from SUD and agreed that the friendships and focus of fly fishing were key contributors to their healing and growth. Founder Rebecca Sue Klein of Smyrna and founding board members, Jennifer Gilbert of Canton, Sylvia Huron of Athens and Ian Huron of Atlanta continue their commitment to the nonprofit’s mission, sharing their unique gifts to grow the organization and serve more people.

Turnkey Interior Design
Translating your taste into functional and fabulous.
TRIFECTA
IS ABLE TO OFFER HIGH-QUALITY FURNISHINGS FOR
2030% BELOW
HIGHER END RETAILERS AND BOUTIQUES.
ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS
Moving into a new home or contemplating an update or renovation can be intimidating when it comes to interior design. You know what you like, but how does that translate into a cohesive and attractive (and budget-conscious) design for your home’s interior?
Ideally, your taste will translate into functional and fabulous.
A turnkey home design service for homeowners who appreciate beautiful design and want a seamless, stress-free experience could be the answer.
Since 2013, Kristy and JJ Ortega, along with their design team, have fully furnished more than 500 homes throughout the Southeast. With a keen eye for detail and a passion for high-end aesthetics, this power couple quickly emerged as an industry leader in the staging and decorating of elite properties. Their expertise and dedication have made Trifecta Home Furniture synonymous with excellence in luxury home design.
Kristy explains how their turnkey design service works:
1. INITIAL CONSULTATION
This consultation helps us learn more about the property, how it will be used and the general direction of the aesthetic based on geographical location.
2. PROPOSAL
Based on our discussion, we provide an all inclusive proposal to complete the project. We have fully stocked showrooms across the country and a streamlined process, so most homes are completed within 24 hours.
3. FULL-SERVICE IMPLEMENTATION
Once the proposal is approved, our team handles everything from procurement to delivery and installation. The design service option is a decision-free, hands-free option for homeowners and investors alike.
WHAT’S NEW?
For fall, Kristy and JJ’s team is loving layered textures and earthy tones.
“Layering different textures is a classic and timeless trend. Combining materials like wool, mixed metals, leather, and fur in your furniture and decor adds depth and coziness to your space,” Kristy says.
And, neutrals are here to stay with rich, earthy tones throughout. “Black is the new grey. Warm colors such as coffee, terracotta, taupe, and rich browns are making a strong comeback,” she says. “These tones bring a sense of comfort and warmth to any space in any season.”
Trifecta has a unique business model. Open one weekday and one weekend day to accommodate most schedules, Trifecta is able to offer high-quality
furnishings for 20-30% below higher end retailers and boutiques. For this reason, their design services are typically a fraction of what other design firms charge. Every home is unique and each will have a specific proposal depending on the clients needs. There is a three-room minimum commitment for design services.
The team will celebrate the longawaited grand opening of their newest location in St. Augustine later this fall
A LUXURY MICRO-RESORT: FLAT MOUNTAIN FARM, NORTH CAROLINA
Architecture Born From History
ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS
From the canoe on the lake, I could see my husband up on the porch of the cabin. Really, it’s an estate house, a sprawling 4-bedroom, 4 1/2 bath cabin-inspired showcase of architecture, furniture and design. The Peregrine is the largest home on the property at Flat Mountain Farm, a newly renovated 28-acre micro-resort just outside Highland, NC. The brainchild of creative powerhouses Christopher and Margaret Shutze, the storybook property can host up to 27 guests in three charming cabins. They purchased the property from an eighth-generation Highlander who
carved out a magical compound over 40 years. The Shutzes completely renovated the antique log cabins and barns, polished the landscaping, cleared hiking trails and now host weddings, retreats, family reunions and long weekend getaways for folks like us who look to starry skies, porch swings and big comfy beds for a recharge. We felt right at home (not that our home is in the same league), spreading out across oversized custom sofas, curling up in adorable club chairs and sidling up to the marble counter in the most beautifully lit chef’s kitchen I’ve ever seen.

Formal living and dining rooms are spacious but inviting, with giant sliders that lead to a deck, deep and wide with more nooks for dining, telling stories and star gazing.
A spring-fed lake for fishing and canoeing is a looking glass in the morning and a short trail leads to a waterfall where Adirondacks await. Pack a picnic and a book and pretend this was all your idea.
Margaret’s experience working for international hospitality firms working on prestigious projects such as the Belmond Casa de Sierra Nevada, Boca Raton Resort and Club, A Waldorf Astoria Resort and Four Seasons Vail led her to this chapter. Chris has been creating specialty homes and custom furniture with award-winning architects for 20 years, and his design prowess is evident across the property.
The charming town of Highlands is about five minutes away, so book a massage at The Old Edwards Inn, eat out, shop for gifts and get back to Flat Mountain Farm in time for a fire in the jumbo Solo Stove where s’mores and stars are served.

Everything You Need to Know for a Healthy Pregnancy Journey
The journey to motherhood is a profound and transformative experience, filled with moments of joy, anticipation, and sometimes, challenges. Emory Women’s Center in Johns Creek understands the importance of comprehensive care
“Emory’s care teams are always available to personalize recommendations based on individual needs, ensuring optimal health for both mother and baby.”
that begins well before conception and continues through the postpartum period. Jana Keating, MD, OBGYN at Emory Healthcare, gives her patients the top takeaways that will help them experience a healthy and fulfilling pregnancy journey.
1. PREPARATION FOR PREGNANCY: BUILDING A STRONG FOUNDATION
Pre-pregnancy care is a cornerstone of a healthy pregnancy. “We recommend several key steps for women to take when planning a pregnancy to optimize their health before conception,” Dr. Keating notes. These steps include a thorough visit with an OBGYN to assess medical history, address underlying conditions, and provide essential vaccinations. She recommends daily folic acid intake to reduce the risk of birth defects in the brain and spinal cord. Maintaining a healthy weight through a balanced diet
and avoiding harmful substances, like smoking and alcohol, are also key to a healthy pregnancy.
2. COMPREHENSIVE PRENATAL CARE: EMPOWERING WOMEN EVERY STEP OF THE WAY
Emory Women’s Center takes pride in offering comprehensive prenatal care that empowers women throughout their pregnancy journey. Dr. Keating explains, “We monitor mom and baby with regular checkups, providing education on diet, exercise, prenatal testing, and addressing individual health concerns.” These checkups include physical exams, weight monitoring, blood pressure checks, and discussions on birthing preferences and pain management options. The center also offers information sessions preparing women for childbirth, postpartum care, breastfeeding, and neonatal education, ensuring they feel informed and supported.

3. NUTRITION, EXERCISE, AND LIFESTYLE: SUPPORTING MATERNAL AND FETAL HEALTH
Women should prioritize a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients, stay hydrated, and engage in regular, moderate-intensity exercise. “Getting enough sleep and managing stress are also crucial aspects of a healthy pregnancy,” Dr. Keating states, adding, “Emory’s care teams are always available to personalize recommendations based on individual needs, ensuring optimal health for both mother and baby.”
4. NAVIGATING THE POSTPARTUM PERIOD: HOLISTIC SUPPORT FOR NEW MOTHERS
The journey doesn’t end with delivery. Emory Women’s Center continues to provide support during the postpartum period. Dr. Keating highlights, “We offer routine check-ups to monitor healing, breastfeeding concerns, and screen for postpartum depression.” This comprehensive approach addresses physical and emotional challenges, providing resources and referrals for mental health support as needed. Parents can receive guidance on newborn care, recovery, and transitioning back to daily activities, fostering confidence and well-being.

Harmony for Hope: Defeating ALS
ARTICLE BY SEAN O'KEEFE
PHOTOGRAPHY
BY JOLIE LOREN AND PROVIDED
John Driskell Hopkins (HOP), founding and active member of the Zac Brown Band, was diagnosed with ALS, in December of 2021. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease impacting nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Progression of the disease can vary from person to person, affecting movement, speech, and breathing. ALS is 100% fatal.
In response to his life-altering diagnosis, HOP and his wife Jen were called to activism, and in May of 2022, this unstoppable duo launched the Hop On A Cure Foundation. Their personal mission is to bring a new voice to the fight, empowering others to join the cause. They are doing everything in their power to secure critical funding for research to ultimately find a cure for ALS. “Help us envision a future free of ALS,” has become their mantra, truly inspiring others.
Their personal mission of Hop On A Cure, “to secure critical funding for research to ultimately find a cure for ALS” is only achievable with your help. This is

a tangible goal. ALS isn’t incurable. It’s underfunded. Through community-empowered, grassroots fundraising initiatives, there have been more than 150 events held across the country. Hop On A Cure has granted in excess of $1.6 million, all directed toward finding a cure and defeating ALS.
Harmony for Hope: Defeating ALS is Hop On A Cure’s newest fundraiser and it promises to be an incredible evening. Exquisite cuisine and exceptional wines set the tone for spirited bidding as guests vie for incredible, once-in-a-lifetime live auction prizes.
The finale of the evening is an intimate songwriter-in-the-round showcasing performances by Zac Brown, Clay Cook, Coy Bowles, Daniel de los Reyes, Bobby Yang, Lilith (Lily Costner) and other special guests. Each artist will deliver personal, memorable performances honoring their friend HOP and his fight against ALS.
Can’t join the gala? You can host your own fundraising event to benefit Hop On A Cure's mission. We can’t do this alone. We need your help to end ALS.
