Hello friends,
When we moved to Atlanta from Michigan 15 years ago, our daughter was a senior in high school and she was not thrilled with the idea. Either was I, to be honest. I registered her for classes here and discovered graduation requirements between the states were drastically different and that she would be required to go to night school or study online (a new option back then). After much discussion, we decided she should finish high school in Michigan and stay with her bestie’s family. That lasted a few months and we’ll be forever grateful to the family. Jane then stayed with my besties, Scott and Melissa (pictured) and their three young kids, as a transition. Melissa is a fabulous cook and Jane enjoyed hanging out in the kitchen with her, helping with the kids now and then while considering her housing options. Scott was busy with his career and earning his Master’s at University of Michigan. Their plates were full. Still, they generously opened their home to Jane. One evening, Scott said he needed to have a conversation with her. Both Jane and Melissa remembered being apprehensive. Was it time for her to move along?
Scott asked Jane how she felt about living with them and if she’d like to stay for good. This was his idea and came out of left field. Of course, Jane said YES. She finished classes and graduated early. But, during those four months, Scott provided an unwavering solid foundation of acceptance and friendship for Jane. While she made herself at home in the guest room (the carpet was never the same), Scott welcomed her skater friends into their home and let Jane come and go as she wished. His quiet support helped her confidently navigate living away from her family. To this day, she introduces them as her “rental parents” and Scott continues to play an important role in her life as “Pepe” to her children. His grace, generosity and fierce sense of humor are an inspiration to us all.
Happy Father’s Day to Scott, Jane’s (real) dad Jim and all fathers who are relentless with their generosity, lead by example and laugh with their children and “rental” kids.
All my best,
June 2024

Halle’s Rally Cry
ARTICLE BY JENNIFER DUNAWAY
KIDS CORNER | HEALTH + WELLNESS 14
“
As she continues to be cancer-free, Halle loves drawing and being creative and hanging out with her brothers, Cole (13 ) and Nate (9).
When Johns Creek’s Halle Honess turned four, her family received some very unexpected news. Her routine checkup turned into a CT scan, followed by an MRI, which then revealed she had a massive liver tumor. In just a few hours, their lives were turned completely upside down, as they started down a path they never thought they’d walk. Halle is the daughter of Liz and Jon Honess.
Amazingly and thankfully, that walk had a very happy ending. Thanks to some brilliant and patient doctors, the tumor was successfully removed, and they’re proud to say that three years later, Halle is still cancer-free.
As soon as this happened, her parents knew right away that they wanted to give back. Over the years, they’ve donated and participated in a number of ways, eventually leading them to the Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research, which raises awareness and funds for childhood cancer research to help scientists find better treatments with fewer long-term side effects and, ultimately, cures.
At this year’s Rally on the Runway fundraiser at the Georgia Aquarium, Halle and Rally Kids from throughout Georgia who are fighting or surviving cancer, each took 47 steps down the runway as a reminder that every day 47 children are diagnosed with cancer.
The evening’s host was longtime Rally supporter and Atlanta Falcon’s defensive tackle Grady Jarrett. Jarrett, along with other NFL players, walked with each model down the runway. Halle was escorted by Atlanta Falcon’s wide receiver Chris Blair. The two struck a pose to excited cheers from the crowd.
Partnering with the Rally Foundation has been a rewarding experience and allowed the Honess family to give back in more ways than they ever
thought possible. They got all of their family members engaged in the challenge to raise $25,000 with their team “Raise a Hallelujah!”
Not only did they achieve that goal, but team “Raise a Hallelujah!” has now raised over $50,000 for Rally on the Runway!
As she continues to be cancer-free, Halle loves drawing and being creative and hanging out with her brothers, Cole (13 ) and Nate (9). You can also find her wearing her pink cleats and giving it all she’s got on the soccer field. When she gets older, she wants to continue to help others as a veterinarian.
ABOUT RALLY FOUNDATION:
Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, raises awareness and funds for childhood cancer research to help scientists find better treatments with fewer long-term side effects and, ultimately, cures. Since 2005, Rally Foundation has awarded $29.4 million in grants to more than 500 childhood cancer research projects across the country and internationally. In addition, Rally Foundation has successfully advocated for more than $144 Million from the U.S. Department of Defense’s Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) given directly to researchers specifically for cancers in children, adolescents, and young adults. Rally Foundation has a perfect 100 rating from Charity Navigator, GuideStar’s highest rating, and has received the Independent Charities Seal of Excellence. For every dollar raised, 93 cents supports Rally Foundation’s mission. In October 2023, Rally was named Foundation of the Year by ShareCare Inc. Father FIGURES
LOOKING BACK AT ALL THE DADS IN MY LIFE!
ARTICLE
AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY SEAN O'KEEFE
A chanced meeting of the minds. Leonard and my dad were friends and often would chat about me and what I was doing with my life.

Simeon Reid, war hero and mentor.

Kevin O'Keefe, a man of very few words, but one who was indeed filled with emotion.
“Poppy Driscoll took the time to teach me all the tricks that I needed to survive in his world. Very few are still relevant in the world of today.”
With Father’s Day fast approaching I decided to take a few minutes to reflect on the many father figures who have given me their wisdom and invested in the potentiality of my life. I have had the distinct privilege of being a son to many incredible men who have taken pride in helping shape the person that I have become. These men all shared a desire to empower me with their life’s lessons, preparing me for all that life has to offer.
Simeon Reid, my maternal great-grandfather, whose memories of World War I instilled in me the value of fighting for what is right and the importance of keeping peace at the forefront of my mind and soul.
Hector Driscoll, my maternal grandfather, showed me how to grow food,
maintain the richness of the land, and love unconditionally. His motto: use it up, wear it out, make it work or, do without. He fostered the belief that I was very special and that I would do good in the world.
James O’Keefe, my paternal grandfather, taught me the value of laughter and to cherish family.
Two of the most instrumental men in my life were Leonard Grainger and Kevin O’Keefe, my dad.
Leonard took me under his wing and was the greatest mentor a young man could have, changing my life entirely.
Kevin would end up being the man who would teach me the most about myself and how to truly be me in this world. He was a military man who challenged me, while celebrating the milestones of my life in his pragmatic way. He empowered me to stay real. His eternal lesson was simply to under promise and over deliver and ultimately to be true to myself.
Each father figure took their time to impart in me the most important of life’s lessons. Whether using the wind to clean blueberries or to fish from the well, these lessons helped to shape me into the man that I have become.
I am flooded with memories of their teachings and they all continue to speak to me daily offering counsel, guidance, love, and encouragement. I hear their voices as if they were my own and I am a much better man having had all of them in my life.
I am forever grateful to all of the incredible father figures in my life who loved me as son, grandson, great-grandson, uncle, mentor, and coach. They all loved in their unique way. They wanted to help shape my life.
Each of these incredible men reside in my heart, mind, and soul. My legacy is that of remembrance and strength. Their stories are mine and their memories will be a blessing to all whom I have the pleasure of calling a friend.
Happy Father’s Day!
Hector Driscoll, a gentle comical man whose love for me was unending

JIM ZELLERS
Jim plays the flute, and has been the JCSO Principal Flutist since the orchestra was founded in 2006/2007.
He carries with him the advice from his first flute teacher, Mark Thomas. “Luck is when preparedness meets opportunity, so treat every session with the flute as if you are about to go on stage to play a concerto.”
Right now he is preparing for summer chamber music concerts in Highlands, NC that will feature Franz Schubert’s Introduction and Variations on “Trockne Blumen“ for flute and piano, as well as Hector Villa-Lobos’s Assobio a Jato “The Jet Whistle” for flute and cello. He is also a pianist/organist, filling in at St. Benedict’s Episcopal in Smyrna.
Jim encourages young musicians to “work hard with humility and patience, and you will reach your goals. To be able to perform and move audiences with your music is a privilege and the best job in the world!”

Jim Zellers
“TO BE ABLE TO PERFORM AND MOVE AUDIENCES WITH YOUR MUSIC IS A PRIVILEGE AND THE BEST JOB IN THE WORLD!”
What does a professional musician listen to?
“I have a very eclectic playlist that has Motown (The Supremes “Where Did Our Love Go,” “Let Me Go The Right Way”) to Judy Collin’s “My Father’s Eyes” and “Golden Apples of the Sun.” What I am currently listening to has much to do with current pieces I am performing, such as Wagner’s Die Walkure (2nd installment of the Ring Cycle) and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No 5.“
On Father’s Day this month, he will hit the grill and BBQ with family.
CALEB HERRON
Caleb is a percussionist and has played with the JCSO for 15 seasons. His favorite music in his practice folder right now is a vibraphone solo that was written for him by Christopher Adler called Cypher. He will perform it at the Fairbanks Summer Music Academy this month.
Advice he received from a music teacher inspires him to keep striving for greatness in his playing: “You’re only as good as your next performance.”
To all the younger musicians out there, Caleb says, “Keep going. Keep striving. The more you put into music, the more you’ll get out of it.”
This year on Father’s Day, he will be traveling, but hopes to share a laugh with his dad over the phone. Lately, Caleb has been listening to music from his childhood - hits from the 80s and 90s like Tears for Fears, Starship, and The Pretenders.

Anderson Carman's "Cyber League Baseball: The Naturals" is now available to read online
On any given day, Anderson Carman can probably be found drawing or coloring in his home studio in Johns Creek, show tunes playing through his headphones. Though the artist’s works range from a children’s book about a green flamingo to a comic book about

monsters, his style is unmistakable.
His latest piece, a webcomic entitled Cyber League Baseball: The Naturals, imagines a futuristic time when professional baseball is dominated by players with robotic augmentations, “like a spring-loaded arm that shoots out fast, and crazy things like that,” he says. And reading it may just be the best way to get to know Carman’s journey as an artist.
“This project is very autobiographical,” he says. “There’s a lot of stuff from my own career and story I’m putting into this.”
His protagonist, Asher, dreams of playing professionally--without augmentations--as a rare “natural.” As Asher chases success, he discovers how much the definition of “making it” can change with each new goal met, not unlike the author’s own experience.
“I think a question that a lot of people in the arts and entertainment industry have very often is, ‘When have I ‘made
characters who set out to “prove that true athleticism can’t be replaced by machines.”
While he was not an avid comics reader as a child, Carman wanted to pursue art from an early age.
“In high school, I started playing around with animation. I did a lot of stop-motion with Legos and stuff like that.”
He spent 18 months in an animation school, culminating in a portfolio review by a Pixar artist.
“This is good, but I would encourage you to go to an art school and really study drawing,’” the artist told him. “My drawing actually wasn’t very good, but my animation was fine. So I went back to school, initially thinking I would go into animation,” says Carman.
His plans shifted when he and his brother created a comic book for fun, and he discovered he preferred

Now he works from home alongside his wife, two toddlers and baby. When not working or spending time with his family, Carman enjoys running at East Jones Bridge Park and visiting Home Depot to pick up supplies for his latest house project.
“Right now, I’m trying to figure out how to make a slingshot/catapult so my son can throw the softball to me and help me practice. He’s only three, so his arm isn’t that big. We’ll see if that works.”

YOUR MENU OF PREPARED FOOD IS IMPRESSIVE. WHAT ITEMS WOULD YOU RECOMMEND FOR THE PERFECT FATHER’S DAY DINNER, IF DAD DOESN’T WANT TO GET BEHIND THE GRILL?
You can grab Dad some of our braised short ribs, Moroccan lamb stew, or maybe our fig and red wine glazed meatloaf. Then, for sides, maybe wagyu tallow roasted potatoes (a top seller) or potato and cheddar gratin. Try our mac and cheese (or even better our lobster mac and cheese). For vegetables, our citrus and herb cauliflower, Brussels sprouts with chili crisp, or asparagus with lemon, parmesan, and thyme are all winners.
AND, IF DAD IS MARRIED TO HIS BIG GREEN EGG OR GRILL, WHAT WOULD BE THE ULTIMATE CUT AND HOW WOULD YOU PREPARE IT?
Again, I could talk about a reverse seared ribeye on the Egg, which is always fantastic, but I’m going
to go with the less obvious tri-tip. It’s a cut that’s not focused on in the South as much, but it’s known as the CA BBQ cut. It comes from the bottom sirloin, and has a great deep beef flavor. I like to start mine by rubbing with SPG (salt, pepper, garlic), and searing in my cast iron. Then I’ll go to the Egg, and cook it indirect at 250-275 F until 125 F internal temperature is reached. Then, let it rest for 10 minutes and be sure to slice AGAINST the grain. Another great option, our American Wagyu Picanha (coulotte), a cut made famous by all those Brazilian steakhouses, is amazing, and very reasonably priced.

that is delicious. On the wine side, it’s rosé season, and we’ve got a great Provençal still and sparkling option, and a delicious vinho verde, a light, low ABV Portuguese white wine that is perfect for this time of year. For reds, we’ve got a great new Beaujoulias that is a great light red option.

Georgia Luxury Pools dive into a luxury project.
David Brown is on call pretty much 24/7.
When a customer has a question, he presses pause on his day and focuses on solutions. It’s his pleasure. He grew up watching his father run a successful pool business and now, at the helm of Georgia Luxury Pools, David is building a company where design excellence and customer communication are key.
“At Georgia Luxury Pool, integrity, quality and customer service are the foundation we build upon every day to make sure the customer’s experience, from dream inspiration to building the pool, creates a luxury experience,” says David. “When you walk out of your back door, your friends and family will be impressed from pool to patio.”
Homeowners, John and Jeanne Flack along with daughter Emma and son John wanted an expansive space to entertain family and friends that also had a more cozy and intimate feel for smaller gatherings. Together with David and Patrick Ferguson of Southern Landscapes and Designs, the Flacks now have a showcase property.
Patrick chimes in, “The Flack residence was a complete design- build project. The sloped backyard presented challenges to level multiple elevations.”
For the pool, the family wanted a swim lane, tanning ledge and spa. David’s team designed the 18-foot x 36-foot rectangle with a 12-foot x 6-foot’ tan ledge on the side and a 6-foot bench in the deep end plus a 6-foot x 10-foot spillover spa at the end with eight therapeutic jets.
“This was a beautiful project to work on,” says David. “The clients were amazing to work with, and had a backyard that gave so many options for design!!”

GOOD FATHERS NEED HELP
Father's Day is a celebration meant for everyone, regardless of whether or not one has a traditional dad in their life. It's a day set aside to honor and appreciate all father figures, mentors, and influential males who may have played a significant role in shaping lives and providing guidance and support. Whether they are biological dads, stepdads, grandfathers, uncles, coaches, or mentors, these men can be celebrated in a way that feels meaningful and authentic to each individual relationship. Here are some ideas for celebrating the special father figure in your life:
1. Spend the Day: Plan a day of activities that you know they enjoy and that you can enjoy together. Whether it is a hike, a fishing trip, or a round of golf, you can take that special father figure out and spend quality time together strengthening your bond.
2. Create a Memory Book: Gather photos and memories of your time together and put them in a book that holds these special moments. This is a gift that you can add to in the future and can be shared for many years to come.
3. Have a Special Meal: Prepare a favorite meal or dish that your father figure enjoys. You can cook it yourself, order out, or even take them to their favorite restaurant. Sharing a meal can increase connectedness and strengthen your bond.

“IF FATHER’S DAY
BRINGS UP FEELINGS OF SADNESS OR LOSS, BE
SURE TO TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF.”
4. Write a Letter: Consider writing a heartfelt letter expressing your love, gratitude, and appreciation for him. Let them know how much they mean to you and how they have positively influenced your life; this can be a good way to celebrate if you cannot be with him in person.
5. Volunteer or Donate: Honor him by giving back to the community in his name. Volunteer at a local charity or donate to a cause they are passionate about. This is a meaningful way to celebrate their influence and values.
6. Host a Celebration: Organize a celebration with family and friends and include their favorite food, activities, and music. This is a chance to celebrate their presence and influence in the lives of their loved ones.
7. Reflect and Remember: If you have lost a special father figure, take some time to reflect and remember the positive influence they had on your life. Light a candle or visit a special place that holds significance for you both. Spend a moment in quiet reflection to honor their memory.
8. Self-Care: If Father’s Day brings up feelings of sadness or loss, be sure to take care of yourself. Engage in activities that bring you comfort and solace, whether it is spending time with supportive people, practicing self-care routines, or seeking professional support if needed.
