We look forward to seeing you, Kristy & JJ Ortega

Hello friends,

Well, we made it through the election cycle and now it's time to get serious about the holidays. Now, that's a blessing!

This year, my family will celebrate with a trip to the Dominican Republic to stay at Villa Cantamar, one of the magnificent vacation rental homes from The Kristy Collection. Can't wait! I'll share photos and a story in an upcoming issue.

For years, we've vowed to take a trip together instead of scheming, shopping, making, and wrapping. I love all those things, so we'll see how the new plan goes. Stand by.

In the meantime, savor the holiday inspiration from Haven Lane Home, a gift guide from our staff photographers at Firelite Studios, and tips for introducing kids to the wonderful world of classical music and the Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra.

Our writer Sean O'Keefe brings you his tale from a once-in-a-lifetime trip to The Galápagos Islands on Ecoventura’s luxury expedition private yacht. Dreamy!  Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and Joyous Kwanzaa to one and all!

All my best,

SUE

ANDRIA PARKER'S DREAM CAME TRUE IN JOHNS CREEK.

Andria is loving roasted hazelnut, cranberry and soft metallics for accent tones this year.

Haven Lane Design Studio + Home Boutique was launched in 2016, by Andria Parker with a new storefront in Johns Creek opening its doors this year.. Currently, HLD has a team of 10 people and serves Johns Creek with unique, curated items for the home in its boutique as well as design services for projects large and small. “From selecting the perfect upholstery piece to executing a full-scale renovation, our team is ready to help with all things home. Offerings include: in-stock

furniture, custom upholstery, case goods, art, rugs, custom and semi-custom window coverings, accessories, lighting, and dining/kitchen accents,” says Andria.  Design consultations are available in-store or in-home.

When setting a festive table, Andria starts with the centerpiece. “I love a dramatic centerpiece that grabs the attention of the guests but doesn’t overwhelm or limit connection and conversation. Consider varying heights for added drama. Soften the placement of the centerpiece items with greenery, berries, naturals,” she says. She uses colorful plates or chargers as a foundation, layering them with complementary salad or appetizer plates. Match place cards, napkin rings, and design elements. Andria

is loving roasted hazelnut, cranberry, and soft metallics for accent tones this year, along with plenty of vintage charm and opulent details like velvet, gold accents, and candelabras.

This holiday season is particularly special to Andria as it’s her first year as a store owner. “I’m eager to help my community prepare for the festivities and am thankful for the support of neighbors and family.”

SYMPHONY 101

HOW JOHNS CREEK SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA CREATES A KIDFRIENDLY CONCERT FOR HOLIDAY FAMILY FUN

“Sit still and be quiet!”

Those are words that parents often speak over their children in performance settings. It’s typical when attending the symphony that all audience members, regardless of age, are expected to dress for the occasion, sit in their seats, and quietly enjoy the performance. Even though Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra understands and encourages the importance of concert etiquette for some performances, they also understand that kids are… kids!

Kids are lively, passionate, and creative – all important qualities of a musician! As a symphony orchestra that advocates for music education, the musicians know that children love music. Inviting children into musical experiences at a young age offers a multitude of benefits and cultivates a lifelong love for the arts. In fact, the annual kidfriendly Christmas concert is designed around this very concept.

As a board-certified and fellowship-trained oculoplastic surgeon, Dr. Julia Kang is highly specialized in plastic surgery of the eyelids. As a true eyelid specialist, Dr. Kang is an expert in her field regarding any type of eyelid concern, both cosmetic and medical. Dr. Kang is also an expert injector in Botox and fillers and aims for only the most natural appearing results, believing in a ‘less is more” approach.

Each year, Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra presents the ultimate children’s concert experience in a way that encourages noise, movement, and fun all in a traditional symphony setting. “A Kids’ Christmas” is a sensory-friendly concert that is suitable for children of all ages as well as children and adults with special needs. At this concert, we encourage kids to dance in designated dance zones, clap and cheer during and after

the performances, and sing along to popular holiday songs. For our friends with special needs, we provide sensory-friendly signage, a cool-down area for those who struggle with overstimulation, and we also remove sudden sounds and lighting effects. This concert is also appropriate for elders with dementia or Alzheimer’s. We encourage our audiences to bring the entire family to create holiday memories for a lifetime!

Music should be accessible and enjoyed by everyone and JCSO encourages parents who want to expose their children to the performing arts to seek out concerts and performances that allow kids to be kids. When performances allow clapping, dancing, question-asking, cheering, sensory-friendly options, and more, kids are more inclined to respond positively and feel inspired by the performing arts.

NOTES FROM A LOCAL

Back to North Carolina

Asheville and most of the surrounding towns are welcoming back visitors who come with patience and understanding of the current situation.

Since Hurricane Helene devastated parts of southern Appalachia in late September, the area has made incredible progress toward restoring a sense of normalcy and revitalizing local economies that depend heavily on tourism and visitors. But, there’s still much to be done.

We caught up with local realtor Preston Mayfield who kindly provided an update.

He explains that the Asheville and WNC real estate markets have rebounded surprisingly fast since the storm. Prices have cooled slightly and inventory has improved. For certain locations, this is an excellent time to buy mountain land.” It has been heartwarming to see the communities and the entire region come together during this time,” says Preston. While it will take months, and in some places years to rebuild, Asheville and most of the surrounding towns are welcoming back visitors who come with patience and understanding of the current situation,” says Preston, who relocated with his family from Atlanta in 2021.

While it is still too early to comprehend the impact of the storm on the WNC real estate market, Preston made some notes for us:

1) WNC is still an incredibly beautiful and desirable place to live. Although many parts of the Blue Ridge Parkway and other WNC attractions will be closed for repairs, there are plenty of other places to get amazing views and enjoy life in the mountains.

2) Housing inventory has taken a hit in a market that already had relatively low supply and high demand.

3) There is much to learn from the places that have lived through similar disasters. For example, post-Katrina average home prices rose about 10% within 6 months and annual appreciation increased from 7.6% to 14.1%.

Before joining the real estate world, Preston spent 10-plus years in technology recruiting and consulting, matching top tech talent with various companies and industries. His passion for connecting people with unique opportunities made real estate a natural progression and serves him well in helping clients find the perfect property.

“Similar to recruiting, the first thing I do is gather requirements from my clients to understand how I can best serve them. Will this be a primary or second home? Does it need to be turnkey, fixer-upper project, or unimproved land on which to build,” he says.

Also, because the area offers recreation galore, it is also important for Preston to dive deep into finding out his clients’ favorite activities in the mountain: fly fishing, hiking, mountain biking, golf, gardening, bird watching, or simply enjoying the view. “It’s important that you don’t drive to the mountains, and then have to drive a lot more to do the things you love.

Bryson City and the Nantahala River offer an abundance of trails and rivers. “This area is tough to beat for those who love to be active outdoors. The Nantahala is a great river for rafting, fishing, and kayaking for the whole family. My personal favorite river in the area is the Cheoah in nearby Robbinsville. Endless River Adventures is one of the few companies that runs commercial rafting trips when the dam releases.”

While Preston and his team will continue to pitch in to help the many neighbors in need, he will also be keeping his finger on the pulse of Western North Carolina real estate and helping clients find their next perfect home.

OHNSCREEKINVENTORS MAKEGIVINGMORE FUN

‘Tis the season for toy shopping.

Every parent wants to find their child that one special gift that produces a sense of fun and wonder, something unique their child hasn’t experienced. That can be challenging today when many kids are just focused on getting the newest video game or smartphone.

Toy inventors Austin Hilliam and Stephen Fazio of Johns Creek may have hit upon something, however, that can bring back “The Smile of Wonderment.”   ZipString is an innovative new toy that brings hours of entertainment to kids and adults.

At first glance, the toy seems to operate on pure magic, but really it’s all pure science.

In 2021, while working on a robotics competition at Georgia Tech, Fazio was challenged to create a small circuit board that could do anything, as long as it cost under $50. His design was used as a string launcher, a fun physics experiment featured on YouTube. He successfully designed

a hand-held string launcher and won the competition, but was unsure what else he could do with it.

When Fazio and Hilliam met later through church, they spent hours discussing how to turn the string launcher into something more. It took the pair only twelve days to create a bare-bones prototype string launcher toy, the original ZipString.

Hilliam and his father advised Fazio not to share the idea with anyone, since they saw the potential for a new product. The excitement was too much, though. “He ended up posting it on the internet,” Hilliam says. “And had twenty million TikTok views in four hours.

“In the video description I added, ‘Arriving soon on Kickstarter’,” Fazio explains since he didn’t want to disappoint thousands of interested potential customers.

Soon YouTube sensations Dude Perfect asked to take a prototype on a national tour, social media influencers wanted to feature the toy, and best of all, pre-orders were being placed from kids and parents who wanted their own ZipString.

Hilliam recalls, “We wound up building the first 4,000 by hand in my parent’s basement.”

“We are both very hands-on, so we just thought, hey, we can probably do this ourselves,” Fazio explains. And that’s exactly what they did.

After the toy went viral, the two visited Hilliam’s engineering teacher at Johns Creek High School, Dr. Stephen Sweigart, who had been influential in Hilliam’s early interest in electronics. It was Dr. Sweigart who suggested the pair should apply to Shark Tank where they made an appearance in 2022.

Today, the successful ZipString business is still headquartered in Johns Creek and the company has just shipped out its millionth unit, with more new products and fun on the horizon.

Kicker rock or Leon Dormido is an amazing rock formation nearby San Cristobal Island

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I received the invitation to explore The Galápagos Islands on Ecoventura’s luxury expedition private yacht, Theory. Perhaps one of the world’s most remote and exclusive travel destinations, the archipelago, located some 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, has captivated explorers and adventurers for centuries; inspiring Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution. Home to countless species of endemic flora and fauna, the voyage was to be the adventure of a lifetime offering a world-class Relais & Châteaux experience while circumnavigating the rich ecological history of our planet.

Perfect for the luxury traveler, Ecoventura’s environmentally sound and socially responsible approach to ecotourism is a hallmark of the adventure. The world-class, bespoke, and personalized service that you receive while onboard is nothing short of amazing. Walls of windows, impeccably appointed staterooms, a welcoming guest lounge, rooftop sundeck, and gourmet dining elevate the experience beyond expectation. The gracious and accommodating staff are always there to heighten the guest experience every step of the way.

FIVE THOUGHTFUL HOLIDAY GIFTS TO SPARK JOY

Gift-giving should be fun, not a last-second stressor that turns you into a Grinch. Seeing that special smile light up is a hard feeling to beat, so, here’s a list of gifts that blend creativity, a touch of retro charm, and just enough practicality to keep everyone happy and engaged as we bring 2024 to a close.

JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”

As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.

Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.

One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.

Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.

These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just

about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”

We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.

To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.

The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.org

SCOUT PROUD

Because he is 15, Aaron Urbanawiz, an Eagle Scout with Troop 1857 in Johns Creek, is too young to earn a driver’s license, but he is not too young to earn one of Scouts BSA’s highest honors: The National Medal for Outdoor Achievement.

This award is the highest recognition that a Scout can earn for exemplary achievement, experience, and skill in multiple areas of outdoor endeavor. This medal was first released in 2010 and is one of the rarest awards that Scouts can earn, but Aaron’s motivation to excel in Scouting didn’t stop there. He has also earned all 138 merit badges available for scouts to earn. Fewer than 600 members of the Boy Scouts of America in the last 100 years have accomplished this. As part of earning all of these merit badges, Aaron learned to ride a horse, became certified in scuba diving, went on a 20-mile day hike, learned to water ski, snowshoe, play the bugle, and took a class on surveying. In thinking about the merit badges he has earned, Aaron says, “Bugle was

the most difficult to learn as I had never played a brass instrument before. It took me about a year to play the required calls.” The wide range of skills Aaron needed to learn to earn all of these badges has given him some unique experiences.

He learned automotive maintenance at the Porsche Headquarters in Atlanta, Aviation at Warner Robbins AFB, and metalworking from a local metalworking guild. He also spent time learning to sail in the Florida Keys, backpacking in the New Mexico Rocky Mountains, and rafting in the New River Gorge National Park. Looking back at the experiences he has had, Aaron remarked, “Over these past few years, I have met some really incredible people and I’ve had some incredible experiences. To all those who I’ve met, worked with, learned with, or served with along the journey, I just want to say thanks for all the memories, and I’m so excited for what’s to come.”

Over the past five years Aaron has spent as a member of Scouts, he has already spent over 150 nights camping, 300 hours on the water, 200 miles hiking, and 250 miles of riding. His age hasn’t stopped him from becoming a Leave No Trace trainer who teaches others the methods of low-impact camping, certified in wilderness first aid, and serving on the staff at a local Scouts BSA summer camp. Aaron is not planning his Scout retirement yet. His next goals include earning awards based on conservation service and serving his local community, continuing to serve in his troop leadership, and, of course, get his driver’s license. Aaron is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
