Hello friends,
This is the perfect issue for me to do some bragging! It's our kids and pets issue, and I have both. And then some!
My husband Jim and I have three grown children, two beautiful grandchildren and three sassy cats. The newest member of the family is June Emily Sue Spearman, born June 21. Lucky for me, June and her brother Teddy (5) live just 20 minutes away. How I got this issue to the printer with all that cuteness is a miracle!
Speaking of marvels, my daughter Molly and her partner are moving to Atlanta after too many years in NYC. My son Patrick graduated from GSU in December, and is working in the film industry, living near Old Fourth Ward. How did I get so lucky to have all my kids near the roost? When we are all together, my heart swells.
The cats are Johnny, Tommy and Vito. And yes, they are gangsters, all rescues with big personalities.
I'm so very blessed to have a healthy family, humans who care deeply and are creative.
In this issue, you'll find stories about children and animals and people who are passionate about protecting and nurturing them.
At Johns Creek City Lifestyle, we're all about passion projects and giving back.
Enjoy this issue and do share your photos of the kids and pets in your life who make your heart swell. Tag us on Instagram or Facebook to share the love!
Have a great month and thank you for sharing our journey.
All my best,

Fresh for Pets
Healthy pet food home delivery service now a brick and mortar
ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY FIRELITE STUDIOS
When Benjamin King launched his business, Pet Wants Johns Creek, five years ago, his goal was to eventually open a storefront to serve up the freshest pet food in the community. He started with home delivery (which will continue), helping customers find the healthiest meals for their pets.
“Most pet food brands are manufactured in massive quantities in a factory, transported across miles, and stored for months at a time in a warehouse losing vital nutrients essential to your pet’s health,” says Benjamin.
“Pet Wants food is made in small batches and slowcooked over low heat. Made monthly to ensure freshness when you’re ready to restock the pantry.”
The new store is located at 3719 Old Alabama Rd at the corner of Jones Bridge Rd. “We wanted a location that is nested in a heavy residential area. This is a fantastic home for Pet Wants,” says Benjamin. “I am so blessed to have strong family, friends and my awesome customers who have been supportive since the beginning.”
He takes pride in the freshness of the Pet Wants meals and considers the quality to reflect the company’s dedication to integrity and trust. With fresh and natural options for pets of all ages, Benjamin understands the healing properties of fresh pet food and can help customers find the meals that best suit their family pet.
Stop in and say hello. And, from all of us here at Johns Creek City Lifestyle mag, best wishes for continued success, Benjamin!

EASY, BREEZY, FABULOUS FLOORS FOR KIDS AND FURRY FRIENDS
I’m an empty-nester and love my clean wood floors and tidy living spaces. Freshly vacuumed rugs and the scent of Pledge makes me happy. But, what makes me really smile is when the grandchildren come to visit! We wrestle on the rugs, build tall castles with blocks on the floor and have tea parties under the dining room table.
I was curious if our flooring was up to the task, so I sat down with the owners of Piso Flooring to find out more.
TELL US ABOUT SAFE AND NON-TOXIC OPTIONS FOR OUR FLOORS!
When choosing flooring for homes with children who have asthma or other health issues it is important to consider options that have low VOC (volatile organic compounds) emissions and are made from sustainable materials. Hardwood floors that are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) are a great option as they are made from responsibly harvested wood and do not emit harmful chemicals. Cork flooring is another eco-friendly choice that is naturally resistant to mold and mildew, making it a good option for homes with children who have respiratory issues. Bamboo flooring is also a sustainable choice that is durable and easy to clean. Overall, it is best to avoid carpets and opt for hard surfaces that are easy to keep clean and do not trap allergens.
FOR HOMEOWNERS WITH DOGS, WHAT FLOORING OPTIONS ARE BEST?
When choosing flooring for high-traffic areas and homes with pets, it's important to consider durability, scratch resistance, and ease of cleaning. Some
of the best options include luxury vinyl tile (LVT), laminate, and hardwood with a high Janka hardness rating. LVT is waterproof and scratch-resistant, making it perfect for homes with pets. Laminate is also scratch-resistant and easy to clean, but it's important to choose a high-quality option with a thick wear layer. Hardwood with a high Janka rating is durable and can be refinished multiple times. These flooring options are best for high-traffic areas and homes with pets because they can withstand heavy wear and tear while still looking great.

Volunteers are Purrfect
Furkids Animal Rescue is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization that operates the largest cage-free, no-kill shelter in the Southeast for rescued cats, and Sadie’s Place, a no-kill shelter for rescued dogs. The Furkids team is dedicated to saving their local communities’ most at-risk animals, providing life-saving care, and then preparing them to be adopted into their forever homes. As a non-profit organization, their work would not be possible without the help of over 1,000 wonderful volunteers. Furkids is always looking for more people to get involved in their mission.
With locations throughout Metro Atlanta, there are many different ways that Furkids volunteers make a lasting impact. Volunteers play a part in every

step of the animals’ journey while in the program, from their first day in the shelter to their adoption day. Each volunteer is critical in helping heal homeless animals emotionally and physically until they are in a loving home. Volunteers of all ages are welcome, including youth volunteers.
What do Furkids volunteers actually do? A little bit of everything! Volunteers work with dogs by walking them daily, teaching them commands and good behavior, and simply getting their “zoomies” out! Keeping a sanitary environment in the shelter is also essential to maintain animal health and prevent sickness.
If you’re a cat lover - you’re in the right place! Caretakers help clean free-roam rooms and give the cats the affection they crave. There is also the Purrkids program, where volunteers work one-onone with shy or fearful cats to help their chances of adoption. Cat Shelter volunteer Rachel Clark says, “It’s evident Furkids is a safe, comfortable, and warm place for animals to land. I love my time there, and I love helping those precious babies.”
With roughly 1,100 animals in their care, Furkids couldn’t save as many lives as they do without their generous fosters. You too can help an animal in need by giving them a safe place to rest while they wait for their family. Furkids provides all the supplies needed to foster. All they need is a clean, safe, loving home!
There are plenty of volunteer opportunities outside the shelter, also. Furkids Animal Rescue has five thrift stores in metro Atlanta that provide over one-third of their operating budget.
Are you an animal lover who wants to make a difference in the lives of at-risk dogs and cats in your community?

LITTLE ARROW OUTDOOR RESORT PERFECT FOR ADVENTUROUS KIDS AND PETS.
ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS
“While we spent the days fishing, the resort was buzzing with activity.”
When author and fly fishing guide Charity Rutter was looking for a home base for her Cast and Connect women’s fishing retreat, she needed a destination that was near the trout-rich streams in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park that she knows like the back of her hand. She needed a comfortable meeting space for presentations and a happy hour, a variety of accommodations for different groups and budgets and a large fire pit for s’mores and conversation.
The Little Arrow Outdoor Resort in Townsend, Tennessee sits along a winding stretch of the Little River, just a stone’s throw from the entrance to the national park. There are 17 tiny homes, 10 glamping tents, two Airstreams, and four vacation homes on a wooded campus that’s like summer camp for discerning grown-ups.
An on-site store, coffee lounge and resortstyle pool with a beautifully landscaped deck and hot tub, plus a playground and
tipi, laundry, chat and chill community fire pit, community garden, basketball court, gaga ball pit and pickleball courts make this a unique and welcoming spot for families.
While we spent the days fishing, the resort was buzzing with activity (in a good way) with families playing games, kids biking to the pool and folks fishing off the bridge, some catching dinner. There’s rafting and hiking nearby, with private dog-friendly trails on the property.
This fall, Saturday tailgate parties at the Lookout Pavilion (our group’s meeting space), where guests can watch the game on the big screen, with concessions and a community vibe. You can rent a golf cart to jet around the resort or take a long quiet walk along the river at night, turn off your flashlight and look for fireflies and stars. You won’t be disappointed.

The addition of these chairs at our state parks will help to remove some of the obstacles associated with getting outdoors for those with mobility issues.
Following the successful introduction of 11 all-terrain wheelchairs in 2022, Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) are proud to announce an expansion of their comprehensive outdoor accessibility program, Outdoors Beyond Barriers. This initiative aims to grow accessibility options across the state, ensuring that all visitors, regardless of physical limitations, can fully enjoy the natural beauty and recreational opportunities of Georgia’s state parks and outdoor spaces.
Nine more Action Trackchairs (ATC) at an additional eight state parks and historic sites will be available for people with mobility impairments. This expansion, in partnership with Aimee Copeland Foundation’s All Terrain Georgia, brings the total to 20 Action Trackchairs available at 19 locations. The new sites equipped with ATCs are:
• Skidaway Island State Park, Savannah
• Seminole State Park, Donalsonville
• Indian Springs State Park, Flovilla
• Richard B. Russell State Park, Elberton

“The addition of these chairs at our state parks will help to remove some of the obstacles associated with getting outdoors for those with mobility issues,” says Commissioner Walter Rabon of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. “I’m excited to see the Outdoors Beyond Barriers program continue to grow, making the outdoors more accessible for all Georgians, as well as our out-of-state visitors.” The
Outdoors Beyond Barriers program is part of Georgia DNR’s renewed commitment to expanding accessible hunting, fishing, and outdoor activities to those with physical limitations.
In addition to the Action Trackchairs, Georgia State Parks will introduce GRIT Chairs—a hybrid between a manual wheelchair and a mountain bike—enhancing mobility on varied terrains, made possible with a grant provided by the Bronco Wild Fund. Furthermore, in collaboration with EnChroma®, color-blind visitors will be supported with color accessibility glasses, ensuring everyone can experience the full spectrum of nature’s beauty.
The new Action Trackchairs will be available starting this month, while the GRIT Chairs and color-blind glasses will be rolled out later this year. Visitors can check the Georgia State Parks website for availability updates.
ADDITIONAL ACCESSIBILITY OFFERINGS AT GEORGIA’S STATE PARKS INCLUDE:

BASIL THE PUP was part of a litter rescued from under a mobile home in North Georgia and was adopted from the Cherokee County Animal Shelter by Chef Derek Dollar. His favorite herb is basil so it was obvious when he met the puppy (named Basil by the shelter) they were meant to be together.
