Hello friends,
A few years before my mom passed, she presented me with two boxes of letters that I had written to her over the years. The first in the collection was postmarked Marblehead, Mass. I was working for a PR firm and was dating the guy who would be my husband a year later.
She had carefully placed the letters in chronological order and the last one was a postcard from Rome, our first trip as a couple, without the kids. My notes described dinner parties in our tiny apartment, birthday parties in English pubs, a chicken pox outbreak in Hong Kong and bumps along the road of a young marriage.
I wrote about curtain fabric, job interviews and dreams. I inquired about her health, travels and family matters.
At the end of each letter, I’d make a note of the next time we would be together. I’d count the days. I would sign off with hugs, kisses and lots of love.
On Mother’s Day, I’ll be with my daughter Molly in New York.
I am sure we will have a fabulous visit. There will be a lot to write home about.
Happy Mother’s Day from all of us at City Lifestyle xo,

SEEING MORE Clearly
FOR THE INEVITABLE DROOPY EYES, THERE'S A SOLUTION.
ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS
MUST SEE | WELLNESS 12
The eyes are considered the windows to our souls, so if you are finding that the windows are closing or changing shape, perhaps it is time to consider calling a professional.
An oculoplastic surgeon is a true eyelid expert, as they are ophthalmologists who have completed further training in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the eyelids and periocular area. They are the most highly specialized type of plastic surgeon to help treat both medical and cosmetic conditions concerning the eyelids, with greater care for your eyes and vision.
Dr. Julia Kang is a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained oculoplastic surgeon who has trained all over the US, completing her undergraduate degree at the University of Notre Dame, medical school at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and ophthalmology residency at the prestigious Emory University. She then completed an oculoplastic surgery fellowship in California and has also shadowed various oculoplastic and facial plastic surgeons in South Korea. Due to her diverse experiences, Dr. Kang is well versed in treating patients of all demographics and age groups. At her private practice, Joli Oculoplastics, Dr. Kang treats each patient with a customized, individualized approach depending on their unique needs and anatomy.
In addition to surgery, Joli Oculoplastics offers non-invasive aesthetic services that include Botox, Dermal filler, Morpheus8, IPL and Forma-I dry eye treatment.
We asked Dr. Kang to introduce three procedures that are the most popular at her practice.
UPPER BLEPHAROPLASTY
Over time, the skin, muscles and fat of the upper eyelid may sag and cause an unwanted, “tired” appearance. One of the most common procedures Dr. Kang

performs, an upper blepharoplasty, removes the excess skin through an incision that is hidden in the natural eyelid crease. This surgery restores a youthful and rejuvenated look to the eyes and improves the “heavy” sensation on the eyelids. Knowing the right amount of skin to remove and designing the eyelid shape is an art, and Dr. Kang provides a bespoke, customized experience that considers and complements each individual’s natural beauty and unique features.
PTOSIS
Ptosis is a condition that occurs when one or both upper eyelids droop and the edge of the upper eyelid falls toward or over the pupil. Ptosis is usually caused by stretching or thinning of the tendon between the muscle that raises the eyelid and the eyelid itself. With stretching or thinning, the muscle that normally raises the eyelid has to work harder to lift it. This leads to symptoms of eyelid and forehead muscle fatigue and eyelid heaviness. Other less common causes of ptosis are nerve or muscle damage from any cause, various types of eyelid surgery, infection, muscle weakness such as myasthenia gravis, and systemic diseases such as stroke and tumors behind the eye, hypertension, thyroid disorders and diabetes. Children can be born with congenital ptosis. The muscle is abnormally stiff or poorly developed and does not function well. This condition usually lasts until it is surgically corrected. Under
certain circumstances, it can be combined with the operation known as blepharoplasty when fat and skin removal is an added goal of surgery. To correct ptosis, Dr. Kang will choose where to make the incision based upon what treatment the eyelid needs and whether the patient is an appropriate candidate.
LID RETRACTION
In the case of upper eyelid retraction, where one can see the “white” of the eye above the iris, the most common cause is thyroid eye disease. For lower lid retraction, the causes may include thyroid eye disease, lower lid laxity or scarring from prior surgeries (such as excess skin removal from lower blepharoplasties), skin cancers – all of which can pull the lid downward. Some people also may have naturally lower lids. Eyelid retraction can often lead to incomplete closure of the eye, causing dryness, redness and irritation. In severe cases, this can lead to corneal exposure causing abrasions, ulcers, scarring and vision loss.

MEET THREE TALENTED WOMEN MUSICIANS WITH THE JOHNS CREEK SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Music Makers
ARTICLE BY JOHNS CREEK CITY LIFESTYLE STAFF
BACK STAGE | ARTS + CULTURE 16
“...any overwhelming piece or passage can be learned if you break it into small enough pieces, which I find to be true in many other areas of life too!
Meet three talented musicians with the Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra.
ALISON JAMES
Instrument: I play the violin with JCSO and have played with them since the first season in 2007-2008. The first concert was actually in December of 2006, which I played as well.
Favorite music this season: I really enjoyed playing Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in March. I also really enjoyed playing Dvořák’s New World Symphony in February. I play a lot of ballet and opera repertoire, so any time I can play a good standard symphony, I get excited.
Best advice from a music teacher: Have fun while you play.
Best advice for a student: Have fun while you play and make sure to listen to the things you are working on a ton of times.
Mother’s Day plans: This year I will be spending Mother’s Day at home with my husband, mother and mother-in-law. I am hopeful that my college-age kids will be home from school at that time.
CONTINUED > 17 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/JOHNSCREEK MAY 2024
“Speaking from my own experience, everything shifted in a positive direction when I stopped competing with other women and started collaborating.
SARAH KAPPS
Instrument: I have played cello with JCSO since about 2011.
Favorite music this season: We had a memorable Scottish Fantasy with Kevin Zhu. He was thrilling to share a stage with. In the coming year, I’m looking forward to meeting the conductor finalists and seeing what they choose to program.
Best advice from a music teacher: The late Charles Bruch once said that making music is 90% listening to others and 10% listening to yourself. At the time, I was about 20 years old and I was definitely only concerned with myself. Now when I remember him, I challenge myself to “listen out” and hear the music differently. There’s always a deeper layer of listening.
It takes a lot of trust to let go and listen while you’re playing. It feels like what I imagine surfing feels like.
Best advice for a student: Speaking from my own experience, everything shifted in a positive direction when I stopped competing with other women and started collaborating. It’s already a competitive field, why make it more difficult?
Mother’s Day plans: I will spend some of it with my students and I will also take time to remember my own mother who has been gone about 10 years. People always said we looked alike, so all I have to do is look in the mirror and she’s right there!
BACK STAGE | ARTS + CULTURE
18
JUDITH KLEIN
Instrument: I have been playing flute and piccolo with JCSO since 2012.
Favorite music this season: Since Wayne, our music director, intended for this to be the grand finale of his career before retirement, he programmed all of his favorites and what a treat it has been! Sadly though, he passed away before he had the chance to conduct what he clearly poured his heart into. Dvorak’s New World Symphony and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 were wonderful to play and my favorite was Copland’s Appalachian Spring. I look forward to hearing his very talented daughters Adelaide and Katie perform on our May 4 concert.
Best advice from a music teacher: On the subject of practicing, my professor Eldred Spell taught me that when you make a mistake, the reason for the problem usually lies before the error itself. The missed notes often result from not feeling truly secure in the notes immediately preceding. The solution was to back up a couple of bars or so and practice stopping on and sustaining each note leading up to the mistake. Another one of my professors, Kate Lukas, taught me that any overwhelming piece or passage can be learned if you break it into small enough pieces, which I find to be true in many other areas of life too! And when I found myself stuck in life’s comparison trap, Eldred’s pep talk to me included, “Follow your own path - it’s a good one.”
Best advice for a student: I took this actually from a parenting podcast by Becky Kennedy and I adapted it to performance and audition anxiety. It may be relevant to many musicians. She said, “You can’t learn to regulate a feeling you don’t allow yourself to have.” Wow, after years of hearing and reading advice about how to “get rid of” or “overcome” nerves, this really struck me as brilliant! In my experience, none of the deep breathing or other tactics work until you acknowledge that the nerves are totally appropriate. Rather than shoving them away, recognize the familiar feeling, say hello to it and thank it for caring so much.
Mother’s Day plans: It’s truly a blessing to be able to celebrate with my own wonderful mom and mother-in-law and to now be called “Mommy” myself! I love my family and it’s my proudest title!

CHEERS TO MOM
Cara McInerney lives for spring cocktails. The long, pretty days call for all-day sippers, light flavors, and plenty of fresh herbs. She gets excited for peach season, and will be bringing back one of her favorite cocktails from the Brassica vault, the City in the Forest - a high ball with Toki whiskey, soda, and a house peach shrub.
Nestled inside the Waldorf Astoria in Buckhead, the Brassica team leans on the brand’s prestige and storied locations around the world. “We offer our signature elegance and refinement
at Brassica, told through the care of serious passion for Southern hospitality,” says Cara. “Our team is creative and loves to thoughtfully curate every individual dining experience, and our intimate atmosphere provides an exclusive environment for guests to unwind.”
The menu pays respect to the ethos and approach of French cuisine and recipes, but told through a Southern lens with regional ingredients. What mother wouldn’t love brunch at Brassica?

ESCAPE TO BLUE RIDGE
ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY VACASA AND S. COLLINS
I love North Georgia.
Its winding country roads lead to waterfalls, creeks, hiking trails and wide meadows.
I go to Blue Ridge for all this, but mostly for the light.
Exposure to sunlight increases the brain’s release of a hormone called serotonin. Serotonin is associated with boosting mood and helping a person feel calm and focused.

So, this Vacasa rental property caught my attention. And held it for a gorgeous weekend of walks, fly fishing, fireside chats and long afternoons reading and watching the shadows shift. My sister-in-law headed into town to shop and grab groceries (an easy 10-minute drive from the house), I posted up in the hot tub and started dinner. Others kept the fire stoked on the porch and joined me to watch the sunset over the farm field and meadow across the street.
Now, I love a log cabin, but to experience North Georgia in all its glory is to bask in the light and this modern home offers an elevated stay. The two en suite king bedrooms (one with a soaking tub) have floor-to-ceiling windows and enough light to read or knit on the bed during the day. Or, close the blinds and just nap. The colorful but calming living room looks out over the front porch and views beyond. A beautifully stocked kitchen impressed the cooks among us. Enjoy the view!

FULLCIRCL E MOMENT
Meet Johns Creek’s Abby Johnson, mother of two daughters and owner of Abby Johnson Interiors in Peachtree Corners.
YOU GREW UP IN JOHNS CREEK AND NOW YOU’RE RAISING YOUR GIRLS HERE. THAT’S THE SWEETEST!
Yes, in Johns Creek people ARE the identity of town. We are a city that is inclusive and hospitable. All are welcomed here.
Growing up, the youth leader and volunteers at Mt. Pisgah UMC invested weekly in my spiritual growth. My parents credit them for much of my character development in those impactful years.
The full-circle moments are what have impacted me the most now that I have become a mother. For example, watching my girls celebrate their birthdays at Newtown Park, where I spent many a Saturday afternoon as a teen, marking special milestones at Stoney River where we used to dine every Friday night growing up, surrounded by a community that felt like family.
Abby Johnson Believes in Johns Creek
ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS
LOCAL LIMELIGHT | HOME + DESIGN 38
And I couldn’t speak about my life in Johns Creek without mentioning the Atlanta Athletic Club, where I was so fortunate to grow up, immersed in a tight knit, loving group of people who support and champion one another through all stages of life.
We couldn’t ask for a better community to do life with here in Johns Creek.
AS AN INTERIOR DESIGNER, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE JOHNS CREEK VIBE, THE QUINTESSENTIAL STYLE OF HOMEOWNERS HERE?
We are a traditional city, and that is reflected in how we dress our homes. However, Johns Creek is also a young city at just 17 years old, which leaves a mark on the style of our interiors. We mix fresh color palettes and updated pieces with our cherished antiques. Just as our town is a blend of lovely families from all walks of life, our homes too are a thoughtful curation.
WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR MOTHER’S DAY?
Our family is surrounded by girls - and we love it that way! One of our favorite traditions is a mother-daughter tea at the Atlanta Athletic Club that I attend with my mom and two daughters. It is over the top in all things girly and prissy. I am excited this year to include my two soon-to-be bonus daughters!
GIVING BACK IS IMPORTANT TO YOU. HOW DO YOU SHARE YOUR GIFTS?
With us both having type O-negative blood, my mom instilled in me early on the importance of giving back to our community through blood donation at the Red Cross. It is such an easy sacrifice that we can offer, with a huge life saving impact.
In 2019 our family completed a 10-week campaign with Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, supporting my twin brother as he raised over $212,000 in honor of my late husband who passed away from cancer in 2011.

Still Spa at The Swag
Perched at the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains
National Park, The Swag is a very special Relais & Chateau property where history, storytelling and a deep respect for nature are a priority. Combined with luxurious accommodations (hello, private copper soaking tubs, outdoor showers, saunas and steam showers) is thorough and thoughtful service. The Swag has welcomed guests since 1982. Many come back every year to hike with experts in residence who share their knowledge of birds, wildflowers, lore, photography, astronomy, cooking, gardening and more.
You and your spry girlfriends can hike the trails on property or cross into the Smokeys where you can spot four of North Carolina’s six highest mountain ranges adjoining 500,000 miles of national park.
Then, meet at the infinity hot tub almost a mile high on the rim of the Cataloochee Divide, overlooking the Maggie Valley.

Reading Rainbow
WELSLEY JONGKO
HOMETOWN HERO | EDUCATION 46
For parents of young readers, Wesley Jongko has your number.
She is the creator of the Instagram account Little Literacy Nook, which gives quick tips and a lot of free resources to parents supporting their children with reading at home, and a literary coach and interventionist at Medlock Bridge Elementary School. She is also a busy mom. She and her husband Aaron have two children, Collier (5) and Carson (18 months).
We caught up with her to ask about her job, her life and the importance of reading.
WHAT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR WEEK AT SCHOOL?
I was over the moon when two of my students met their reading goal! We set goals in January when we started a new semester. Two of my students set personal goals to increase their words read per minute and they both surpassed their goal. Of course, I made it a really big deal with a lot of cheers and praise. The best part is emailing their parents to let them know the progress we’ve made. I have the best students and I just feel so excited each time I go to pick them up from their classroom.
CAN YOU SHARE YOUR NEW FAVORITE TOOL, STRATEGY OR PRACTICE THAT YOU USE WITH STUDENTS?
In my fifth year of teaching, I was trained in Orton Gillingham through IMSE (Institute for Multi-Sensory Education). The Orton Gillingham approach has been a tried and true approach for the students I serve. For the students, they think writing in sand, using crayons with bumpy paper, and getting to use a dry erase board is fun, but as the teacher, I know this is activating multiple parts of their brain to help reading stick in their long-term memory for automatic retrieval. As far as a new approach, I was recently trained in LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and
Spelling) and started implementing “sound spelling mapping” in creative ways. It is a process for students to listen to a word, isolate the sounds, and match each individual sound to a spelling pattern. I love to create fun “spelling mats” to go along with the seasons or holidays or use toys to help students isolate sounds and correctly spell words.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A YOUNGER WOMAN
JUST STARTING OUT IN YOUR ROLE?
Your first year is your true education. It will be hard and it will be rewarding. You will be exhausted, but nothing beats the first time you see the magic happen with a student whose life you change either academically or emotionally. Lean into your teacher besties, they will get you through the hard days! Never ever, ever stop learning-- learn from your coworkers, students, admin, YouTube, books... there is always more to learn! Lastly, set one tiny goal for yourself to accomplish each day. Truly a tiny goal! On the second day of my first year, my goal was to take a sip of water-- just one!
IS THERE A WOMAN IN YOUR LIFE WHO HAS BEEN A POWERFUL ROLE MODEL?
I was randomly placed with Stephanie Maxwell for student teaching in Athens more than 10 years ago. She quickly became not only a teaching mentor, but someone I go to and trust with life’s big questions. She is the best of the best when it comes to teaching and I still, to this day, use sayings, behavior management strategies, and fun ideas I “stole” from her classroom. I know I can count on her to listen and walk me through experiences she’s had as a mom, as a teacher, and as a wife. She always makes me feel encouraged, while recognizing that being a working mom is a very hard balance!
