Hello friends,

Welcome to our first ever issue featuring investments.

We could have filled the magazine with stories about banking, finance advisors, wealth planners and day traders. All worthwhile angles!

But, instead we decided to bring you features about the importance of investing in yourself.

When it comes to self-improvement, following last fall’s “cozy girl aesthetic,” almost half the skills we’re learning this year are things we do around the house. Handy! Read the story on page 24.

Stylist to the stars Robanne Schulman provides tips on investment pieces to include in your wardrobe. Long live the trench!

And, what's more important than investing in the community? The Young Men’s Service League (YMSL) Johns Creek chapter selected the Atlanta Music Project (AMP) as its Ultimate Gift service project for 2023/2024. Congrats, guys!

Enjoy this issue and don't forget to invest in our community by visiting the advertising partners who support this magazine.

Enjoy spring and long live print!

All my best,

Catchball

CATCHING FIRE

IGNITE A NEW SPORTS CRAZE

ATLANTA WOMEN

Move over, pickleball! There's a new queen of the court, and her name is catchball. This isn't your childhood backyard toss. It's a dynamic, inclusive sport taking Metro Atlanta by storm, empowering adult women over the age of 25 from all backgrounds and skill levels to unleash their inner athlete and discover a new, exciting, vibrant community.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE | FITNESS 16

Forget the rigid structures of traditional women's sports. Catchball champions inclusivity – every woman is welcome, regardless of experience or athleticism. It's all about celebrating the joy of movement, building connections, and reveling in the sheer fun of an addictive game. Picture laughter echoing across sun-drenched fields, highfives exchanged between strangers-turnedfriends, and the thrill of mastering a new spike. That's the magic of catchball.

Play now at the JCC in Dunwoody, A5 in Alpharetta and TK in Roswell.

Studies show that regular participation boosts cardiovascular health, improves handeye coordination, and strengthens core muscles. And let's not forget the mental benefits – stress melts away as you focus on the game, replaced by a surge of endorphins and the invigorating satisfaction of physical exertion.

Fast-paced, highly energetic, and demanding a whole set of physical skills, competitive catchball is a true test of athleticism and teamwork.   Catchball is played all over the U.S. and operates under the umbrella of a thriving national association, the USACA (USA Catchball Association).

Whether you seek a casual afternoon of laughter and connection or a heart-pounding test of your athleticism, catchball has a place for you. It's more than a sport. It's a celebration of womanhood, a testament to the power of community, and a chance to do something incredible for yourself.

The Ultimate GIFT

MUSIC FOR ALL, FROM YSML

The Atlanta Music Project offers choir, band, and orchestra programs to more than 700 children in under-resourced communities.

GIVING BACK | ARTS + CULTURE
20

The Young Men’s Service League (YMSL) Johns Creek chapter selected the Atlanta Music Project (AMP) as its Ultimate Gift service project for 2023/2024.

The YMSL Ultimate Gift Project, inspired by the novel of the same name by Jim Stoval, began in 2010 with the intent of providing an act of service for philanthropy that it may otherwise not have had the manpower or resources to do for itself, while also growing the hearts and lives of young men in service.

Each year, AMP serves over 700 children to reduce barriers to accessing music education in under-resourced communities. All AMP programming is offered tuition-free in exchange for the requirement that all

participants commit to attending all classes. AMP also provides all participants with a musical instrument, class materials, teaching artists, and performance opportunities.

This year, the Johns Creek chapter of YMSL helped AMP organize their first-ever AMP Experience, a concert featuring the entire roster of AMP’s young musicians, for their families, neighbors, friends, and the communities they serve. Nearly 80 mom and son YMSL volunteers gave 246 service hours to make the event a success. It enabled approximately 500 AMP musicians and their families to connect and experience performances by the choir, band, and orchestra programs. Volunteers assisted with setup, music instrument loading and unloading, ushering, and YMSL provided a $1,500 donation.

“Our mission was to help strengthen the connection with our young men and show the impact of having access to educational resources without barriers in a marginalized community; the power of being committed to learning a new skill and staying dedicated to the hard work will determine your success; and how practice makes perfect, regardless of social economic constraints, racial diversity, and geographic location,” says Angie Williams, Ultimate Gift Chair for YMSL’s Johns Creek chapter.

YMSL is a four-year program for moms and their high school sons serving together to impact local communities.  Chapters.ymsl.org/chapter/johnscreek

TOYOU, F ROMYOU

TOP WAYS AMERICANS ARE INVESTING IN THEMSELVES IN 2024
SELF CARE | ARTS + CULTURE 24
“...almost half the skills we’re learning this year are things we do around the house.”

Look out 2024, because Americans are coming in hot—though hopefully not so hot that it sets off the smoke alarm for the 84% of us cooking and baking this year.

New Year’s resolutions aren’t always about cutting carbs or hitting the gym. A recent Preply survey found that, for many Americans, 2024’s “New Me” is all about picking up new skills. And thanks to the never-ending tutorials on platforms like YouTube and TikTok, we’re learning a lot of them.

Forget the “TikTok Made Me Buy It” trend. We’re in the “TikTok Made Me Do It” era now. Following last fall’s “cozy girl aesthetic,” almost half the skills we’re learning this year are things we do around the house. After cooking and baking (#1), we’re brushing up on home repairs and maintenance (#3), video games (#5), writing (#8), knitting and crocheting (#11), gardening

and landscaping (#12), and painting and drawing (#13).

Cooking and baking even beat out New Year’s resolution staples like weightlifting and yoga. However, health and fitness (64%) are still the #1 general skill we’re learning in 2024—probably to help us burn off all that homemade bread.

Learning new skills might sound like a lot of work, especially if you’re part of the 46% of Americans who worry we’re “too old” to do it. But for 72% of us, the end goal of personal growth is living a more enjoyable life. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying material things and experiences for what they are—but no investment stands the test of time quite as well as the investment you make in yourself.

So use 2024 to unlock your best self, and get to baking, fixing up your home, or knitting along with your neighbors!

TRUE GREEN

Would you like your yard to be the leader of the pack?

Do you love the planet?

Your yard could be a regenerative and sustainable outdoor space - a thriving, organic eco-paradise that contributes to protecting biodiversity, building soil, restoring the water cycle, and growing food, medicine, and pollinator habitat.

For over 10 years, Shades of Green has transformed outdoor spaces with designs and online classes including the Regenerative Backyard Blueprint permaculture implementation program. "Regenerative landscapes, no matter the size, can have a positive impact on the environment," says managing director Brandy Hall. Shades of Green is a woman-owned, Certified B Corporation and member of the Sustainable Sites Initiative.

“My personal and professional goal has always been to help people reconnect with their land and to help them live healthier lives. I grew up between my mom and stepdad’s conventional plant nursery in South Florida and my dad’s home in the pristine western North Carolina mountains," says Brandy.

And thus, her love for green and the planet was born.

“When I was young, my mom and stepdad were poisoned by the herbicides and pesticides they used on the farm, which led to escalating allergic reactions for years until I was a teenager when they moved the whole family to the middle of the woods to begin a 4-year detox,” says Brandy.

HOW DID YOU FIRST HEAR ABOUT SLJC?

I first heard about Student Leadership Johns Creek (SLJC) seven years ago when I was a freshman at Chattahoochee High School. In addition to it being a holy grail of an opportunity to add to my resume for colleges, I knew it was a

hyper-competitive, two-year program for the public high school students in Johns Creek to engage in an immersive government and business leadership program. The first time I applied to the program, I was rejected. But after taking up more extracurricular leadership roles and building a stronger relationship with Mrs. Amanda Wile, the SLJC teacher representative at Chattahoochee High School, I applied again my sophomore year and was accepted! Throughout my time at Student Leadership Johns Creek, I’ve built strong relationships with Mrs. Irene Sanders –Executive Director of SLJC, Georgia government officials, and business leaders. In 2018, from my class of SLJC, I was selected by Mrs. Sanders as one of nine to become a Georgia Secretary of State Ambassador, representing Student Leadership Johns Creek. Over 9 months, I led my team of 8 others to promote civic engagement through a paramount State Legislature candidate debate, multiple voter drivers, and many

voter participation campaigns. Eventually, we ended up placing first place out of 2,200 teams in the state. Finally, along with my teammates, I received the Georgia Outstanding Citizen Award from Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and Governor Brian Kemp.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR ED-TECH COMPANY.

After graduating from Georgia Tech, I decided to start a company by tackling one of the biggest problems that Gen Z is facing: navigating the career journey to land internships or full-time jobs – especially in a very difficult labor market like today. I was able to accrue 300-plus interviews during my four years at Georgia Tech, at the most competitive companies like Goldman Sachs, McKinsey, and the NBA, I learned by failing forward. From resume optimization to how to answer specific questions, I turned some of these interviews into later-stage rounds, and eventually a handful of job offers.

I found that there wasn’t a person or class that taught students how to land an internship or job at their dream company. With a huge opportunity gap, I created Careerhaus – an education technology startup aimed at becoming the “Khan Academy” of career. I am creating an exclusive platform for students to get courses on resume and cover letter creation, networking and interview strategy, and digital presence and public speaking. From not knowing where to start to landing multiple job offers, Careerhaus aims to be the go-to platform for students interested in growing professionally. As of right now, I am running the “Careerhaus Fellowship,” a 1-month boot camp to help accelerate students to land a job. We’ve had three cohorts of Careerhaus Fellows starting In October 2023, 20-plus fellows to date with more than 460 applications. However, the company will transition into democratizing this knowledge via an online course that students can sign up to take at their own pace and time.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR INTERACTION AS A MENTOR WITH SLJC STUDENTS.

I have interviewed, recruited, and mentored numerous SLJC students on how to land an internship or job offer. In addition to this, I help plan and select careers and college majors. Lastly, I help with some college consulting, and helping students craft their college applications. Students reach out to me on a daily basis for various types of academic and professional development help.

“Throughout my time at Student Leadership Johns Creek, I’ve built strong relationships with Mrs. Irene Sanders – Executive Director of SLJC, Georgia government officials, and business leaders.”

THE BENEFIT FOR STUDENTS IS OBVIOUS. WHAT’S THE BENEFIT FOR YOU?

When I first started Careerhaus, I didn’t have the intention to become a mentor. I saw a huge gap in resources helping early-career students navigate and land professional experiences. As I started working with high school and college students, I found that I really enjoyed passing on wisdom and being a beacon of help. I enjoy talking about the wins and struggles that these students face academically and professionally. The biggest

benefit for me is simple: it gives me a sense of purpose. I want to be the resource I wish I had when I was their age. If I were to leave this Earth tomorrow, I know that I at least had a positive impact and helped a few kids launch their bright careers.

WHERE DO YOU LIVE AND WHERE’S THE BUSINESS?

I’m currently living in Johns Creek and the business, Careerhaus, is also in Johns Creek. Almost all of the work is done digitally.

Planting Spring Flowers

Helpful tips for planting spring flowers

Sun-Loving Plants:

Spring is here! We compiled a list of flowers that - depending on your planting zone - can be planted in the season.

Plumbago

Has beautiful dark blue or white flowers on a large shrub of 3 to 5 feet. This tends to freeze down in winter and comes back from roots in the spring.

Hibiscus

The tropical variety will not survive the winters so move those pots inside. The plant can get up to 5 feet tall and there are many different colors and varieties. The perennial varieties will freeze to the ground but come back in the spring. The variety Moy Grande is known as the dinner plate hibiscus. The Texas star hibiscus has beautiful flowers in red or white.

Bougainvillea

These colorful plants can be planted in baskets and pots, not in water-logged or low areas where water might collect. They will grow best when given enough space to spread out, and should be planted in an area that will allow them a minimum of 5-6 hours of sunlight every day. Colors include orange, pink, purple, white, red, tangerine and fuschia to name a few.

Purslane

Shade-Loving Plants:

Lantana

This is a great hot weather plant that comes in many colors and varieties. Trailing varieties only get about 1 foot tall but can get 3 to 4 feet wide. There are bush varieties that get 4 feet tall and dwarf bushes only get about 2 feet tall. It comes in yellows, purples, reds, oranges, pinks, fuschia, and many others.

Greggs Blue Mist

This fuzzy light blue flower is a butterfly favorite.

Pentas

This is another bee and butterfly favorite that grows about 10 to 12 inches tall. There is a graffiti variety in different colors that works in beds or pots.

Vinca/Periwinkle

This plant comes in upright or trailing varieties. There are many colors to choose from: lavender, white with a red center, peach, white and red pink to strawberry.

Sages

There are many varieties of sage. The Texas sage is a shrub that has beautiful lavender flowers - a favorite for bees. They usually bloom around the time it rains. Henry Duelberg variety is a smaller bush 18 to 20 inches tall with blue stalks of blooms. Russian Sage is a tall silver lacey foliage with light blue flower spikes and grows to 4 feet tall. Deer tend to stay away from most of the sages.

Turk’s Cap

This plant makes a large bush of red or pink flowers. It has low water needs once established and can tolerate drought conditions and hot temperatures. Prune back plant in winter if it gets too leggy.

Impatiens

These need more water than most other plants and come in many colors. They are valued for their vibrant colors, abundant blooms, and tolerance for shade.

Caladiums

With lush multicolored leaves, many larger than the palm of your hand, caladiums have become one of the most popular foliage plants for shady or semi-shady gardens—with many recent introductions being sun tolerant.

INVESTING IN COMMUNITY

INSPIRED BY | LIFE + CULTURE 42

What happens when you receive a donation of 2,000 pounds of bulk beef from a local grocery store, but you don’t have the commercial kitchen space, manpower or expertise to break it down and prepare it?  Call in the chefs!  When A & S Culinary Concepts in Johns Creek found out about this dilemma, they volunteered to help ensure local families in need would benefit from this generous donation to North Fulton Community Charities.

A & S Culinary assembled an incredible team of chefs, including the executive chef of Truist Park, the opening executive chef from Georgia Aquarium, the retired executive chef of the Downtown Hilton, the retired executive chef from the JW Marriott Buckhead, the executive pastry chef of Kennesaw State University/Atlanta Marriott Marquis and A & S Culinary Concept’s amazing staff.

Johns Creek Mayor John Bradberry stopped by A&S to thank the volunteers who smoked, seared,

and prepared some delicious beef stew, brisket, and roast beef to be packaged and delivered to NFCC’s food pantry.

Thank you to the amazing culinary community that came together to help feed people in need.

The Thrift Shop is open to the public to shop at bargain prices six days a week. Inventory changes daily and special sales events and daily specials make shopping fun and affordable!

When you donate to the Thrift Shop your discards get a second life and you help fund the operations and services of NFCC. In addition, families who qualify can participate in the free Family Choice clothing program.

Proceeds from shoppers also provide much of the revenue for NFCC to serve families each year. That revenue helps prevent hunger and homelessness in our community through, food, emergency assistance, and workforce readiness classes.

Girls on the Run Georgia is a nonprofit that offers afterschool programs to strengthen third-toeighth-grade girls’ social, emotional, physical, and behavioral skills. The evidence-based curriculum helps participants build confidence, deepen relationships and successfully navigate life experiences. The 12-week program incorporates physical activity to unlock essential life skills, encourage personal development, foster meaningful connections with others as well as contribute to the community.

Throughout the season, volunteer coaches utilize a structured curriculum to engage teams in fun and interactive lessons. Teams meet twice a week for 90 minutes and the program culminates with a celebratory 5K event that provides girls with a sense of accomplishment.

“GOTR hasn’t just been a learning experience for my daughter. As a coach, it’s helped me grow as well and step into a new challenge I never expected,” said Coach Julie. “GOTR taught me to be more encouraging, supportive, and empathetic in my everyday life.”

Coaches do not need to be athletes, but are required to be a minimum of 18 years old.
