Johns Creek's past began in the early 19th century in the trading posts along the Chattahoochee River in what was then Cherokee Indian territory. The trading posts grew into crossroads communities where pioneer families - Rogers, McGinnis, Findley, Buice, Cowart, Medlock and others - gathered to visit and sell their crops. You'll recognize the names of those early farming families in the names of the streets and bridges around town. In November 2006, the City's first elected officials were voted into office, with the City of Johns Creek becoming official on December 1, 2006. And now, you and your neighbors are fueling the growth of the community and we're thrilled to be a small part of it. JOHNS CREEK ARTS CENTER LAUNCHES ARTISTS, WITH LOVE

For 28 years, the Johns Creek Arts Center (JCAC), a 501(c)(3) non-profit, has provided arts enrichment to the community reaching over 12,000 participants in 2023. The center’s outreach program serves other non-profit organizations with free art instruction and supplies, an active senior program at Newtown Park and free youth and adult workshops at Ocee Library. JCAC hosts six exhibitions each year at its home location with artwork also on display at Emory Johns Creek Hospital, Johns Creek City Hall, Ocee Library and Newtown Park.

JCAC has received recognition from the GA Senate, House of Representatives, FC Commissioners and the City of Johns Creek for their commitment to the community. Catalina Gomez-Beuth first signed up for art classes with Leslie Murphey in 2010 at the Arts Center. Later, she exhibited her work there and received a very positive reception, appreciation, and soon, awards. “This was my first step into what today has become my life as a professional artist, which I have been living and developing these last 10 years,” says the Johns Creek resident. “Currently, I dedicate myself to fine art and I exhibit in galleries, museums, and art centers in and out of the country. I have now come full circle and can teach at the Arts Center. This is very meaningful to me as I can give back to the first place that allowed me to express my artistic desires.” Catalina lives in Johns Creek with her husband who is from Argentina and two children Camila, 17, and Matias, 12, both born in Georgia. “We were searching for a home that had good schools and the opportunity to visit Johns Creek. We immediately fell in love with the tranquility, diversity, and family atmosphere of the city and decided to build a life here,” says Catalina. Tommy’s Bird Bowls

Each one of Tommy’s Bird Bowls is truly a flight of fancy. His idea was hatched while visiting his sister’s ceramics class where he began turning lumps of wet clay into whimsical ceramic treasures. Each bowl is individually handcrafted with intricate decorations before being kiln fired and glazed. The result is a vibrant labor of love reflecting the enthusiastic and joyful presence Tommy exuded throughout life. Born physically and mentally handicapped, Tommy shared his unique gift with others. To have known Tommy is to know a great inequity, for it is seemingly impossible to ever give as much love as Tommy gave by simply existing. Tommy died in 2016 at the age 50. He inspired his sister, Cathi Brostrom, who inspired him. We caught up with Cathi to ask about this artistic journey.

WHAT LED YOU TO THE JOHNS CREEK ART CENTER?

I started taking classes at Johns Creek Art Center in 2007. A friend of mine encouraged me to visit the Art Center to see the clay studio, I met three students who were working in the clay studio and the manager, Marissa. I felt so welcome and they were so

excited about the classes they were taking, what they were learning, and the activities the Art Center was doing, I knew I wanted to be a part of JCAC. I began taking wheel classes and then started taking hand-building classes. My brother Tommy lived with me and would come to class with me - he was part of what became family. After a couple of years I began teaching handbuilding classes to adults, and kids, and taught summer camp.

Everyone has to start at the beginning, which will be fun, frustrating, and mostly rewarding. You become part of a new community and family. I love to see the excitement in students’ eyes when everything comes together and they realize they made that piece of art. My parents always encouraged me to take art classes. I have taken oil painting and watercolor classes, but ceramics became my passion. My first ceramics class was when I was in sixth grade. I took a break and started again in early 2000. CONTINUED >

Leslie Rogers Todder has spent most of her life as a textile print designer in the heart of the NYC Fashion District. Her print designs have graced fabrics of couture gowns by Oscar de la Renta, Ralph Lauren and Fendi, and featured in collections for Ann Taylor, Cold Water Creek, Chicos, Macy’s and Casual Corner, among others. Now, she teaches art workshops and classes at the Johns Creek Art Center, Alpharetta Art Center and the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Tennessee. Her studio is in Northern Georgia, where she has transitioned to art paintings and wall hangings that draw upon her background in

Fulton County. The organization changed its name to the Johns Creek Arts Center in 2006 when it moved into its current location on Abbotts Bridge Road in the City of Johns Creek. The arts center facility boasts an outstanding ceramic studio, a digital arts lab, and instruction in a wide variety of visual media. Regardless of the subject matter, Pino’s paintings of women, angels, landscapes, and horses, illuminate the artist’s visions and the subtleties of movement and motion through rich, vibrant color and texture. Especially poignant are Pino’s paintings of matadors, flamenco dancers and bullfighting. His depictions capture the intricate dance between the matador and the bull, each brushstroke conveying the passion, bravery, and danger inherent in the ritual. “Inspiration comes from the ether, from the above,” says Pino, “it comes as an image or may appear while watching nature or a work from another artist, never to copy, but to pick elements and recreate them.” JC Pino has been a legacy donor to Georgia Lawyers for the Arts for many years. “A friend needed their help,” says Pino. “He asked me to help the cause. It has become a tradition for me to donate.”
