LIFESTYLE LETTER
Dear Friends
January 2024 PUBLISHER
Jim Newman | jnewman@citylifestyle.com E D I TO R
Sue G. Collins | scollins@citylifestyle.com
Have you seen the latest fitness trends? Me neither. I tend to stick to the tried and true. Walking or biking for an hour each day, drinking plenty of water, eating a plant-based diet and getting eight hours of sleep. Usually. Well, I try. Finding a routine that fits your lifestyle is the number one consideration in charting out a wellness path. Purchasing a monthly pass for a yoga studio that’s just a bit too far away is a recipe for disaster. And, I’m speaking from experience. CrossFit was my life 10 years ago. The community, the proximity of the gym to my house and the competitive nature all led to my success. I’d never been more fit and even won a few competitions. But, a shoulder injury sidelined me (I don’t blame the workout, I blame myself for pushing things a bit too far). Now, I just try to stay limber to keep up with my grandson and tuck the heating pad behind my back when I’m working. Whatever your wellness routine is, we applaud you. And, in this issue, we introduce you to a few of our community’s wellness warriors with tips for boosting metabolism and mood alike. Enjoy this issue and take it to the gym with you! Or, relax on the sofa with a cup of tea and count your blessings. All my best, SUE G. COLLINS, EDITOR @ J O H N S C R E E KC I T Y L I F E S T Y L E

Forecasting the 2024 Housing Market Looking back at the real estate market in 2023, it was a year of high mortgage rates and soaring home prices. In the third quarter of 2023, median home prices reached an all-time high of over $400,000. Mortgage rates also surged, reaching a peak of 7.79%. However, industry experts are predicting that 2024 will be a better year for those looking to buy a home. While home prices are expected to remain elevated in many areas, there are certain markets where prices are expected to soften. Economists are also optimistic the Federal Reserve is done with its rate-hiking campaign after inflation showed signs of slowing in October. Despite this, it's important for potential homebuyers to be aware that the real estate market can be unpredictable. While some areas may experience a softening of home prices, others may see prices continue to rise. Additionally, mortgage rates can fluctuate quickly, so it's important to keep an eye on them as well. Ultimately, those looking to buy a home in 2024 should do their research, be patient, and work with an experienced real estate professional to find the best deal possible.

BUILDING RESILIENT COMMUNITIES WITH
Mindfulness Sucheta Kamath, an ed-tech entrepreneur, is Have you ever accidentally said “excuse me” to a mannequin or tried to push a door open when the sign says pull? Well, you’re not alone. While being inundated by unending to-do lists, we find ourselves resorting to multitasking to cope with our omnipresent busyness. Unfortunately, stress-enhanced daily encounters often invoke mindlessness, leading to fragmented attention, restlessness, boredom, mind-wandering, impulsive decision-making, over-the-top analysis paralysis, and even tunnel vision.

a founder/CEO of ExQ®, founder of Buckhead Mindfulness Group and professor of practice at the Amrita University in India.
We seem to acknowledge that this way of living is not sustainable, and people are searching for options to change the way they relate to a demanding life. However, the growing science of wellness and well-being suggests it’s a practice and not an activity or principle. I had the good fortune of growing up in India and getting exposed to some Eastern contemplative traditions of mindfulness and meditation as a young child. I remember sitting in a room with an oil lamp and trying to concentrate my mind on the flame as a way of building my focus. This sparked a curiosity and longing to explore various forms of meditation and eventually, for more than a decade, I have cultivated my own meditation practice. In 2020, as the pandemic was raging all around the globe, this quest got me to enroll in the Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Certification Program (MMTCP) led by Tara Brach and Jack Kornfield. Mindfulness refers to the practice of maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness of thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and the surrounding environment in a non-judgmental way so that we can down-regulate disruptive emotions and free up our brains to think big in an enlightened self-interest way (rather than selfishly). Founder of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Jon Kabat-Zinn says, “Mindfulness is a healing and transformative meditation practice—a way of living our lives as if they really matter by fully inhabiting our moments as best we can throughout the day.” Contemplative neuroscience shows that when we learn to treat the mind and body as a single unit, we gain enormous control over our health and interpersonal connectivity. Unlike weightlifting and healthy eating that benefits the person who exercises, mindfulness meditation practices benefit not just the doer, but also those in their orbit.

SK I NC A R E , BY THE PROS WHAT’S HOT
The numbers are in, and a clear winner has been declared. Even better, it’s unanimous. Both the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), and The Aesthetic Society have declared that liposuction remains the most popular plastic surgery procedure in the world. In 2022, there were more than 2.3 million liposuction procedures performed across the globe, a 21.1% increase over 2021, according to the latest numbers from ISAPS. ASPS reported that there were 325,669 liposuction procedures performed in the US in 2022, up 23% from 2019. The Aesthetic Society reported that there were 405,328 liposuction procedures performed in 2022. Yes, this is down 12% from 2021, but liposuction still experienced a larger surge than the other surgical procedures during the pandemic, jumping 85% over 2019 levels, compared with a 74% increase for abdominoplasty and a 39% increase for breast augmentations. While down from 2021, liposuction was still 63% above its pre-pandemic level in 2022, The Aesthetic Society reports. There’s a simple reason that liposuction continues to reign supreme: it works. Liposuction also provides close-toinstant results and instant gratification (a big selling point for impatient millennials). The unwanted fat is sucked out for a slimmer appearance. Yes, this can be at the expense of some downtime (think swelling and redness), and it doesn’t affect muscles or skin quality, but most patients find liposuction to be worth it. I foresee an even longer reign for this highly effective and safe plastic surgery procedure.
WHAT’S NOT
Sure, some of us gave up carbs and upped our workout game during the COVID-19 lockdown period, but a lot more folks turned to stress eating and used the lack of access to a gym as an excuse to Netflix and chill.
In fact, fully 39% of people gained weight during the pandemic, with weight gain defined as more than the normal fluctuation of 2.5 pounds. About 27% of people gained less than 12.5 pounds, and about 10% gained more than 12.5 pounds, with 2% gaining more than 27.5 pounds, according to a study from Epic Research. Thanks to the widespread use of Ozempic/Wegovy (semaglutide) or Mounjaro (tirzepatide) for weight loss (and hopefully adherence to a healthy diet, regular exercise) and maybe even liposuction or energy-based fat reduction, most people have shed their COVID 15. Now, some people have developed unwanted side effects from rapid weight loss in their cheeks. “Ozempic face” refers to withdrawn, sucked-in cheeks, and “Ozempic butt” is the media’s name for deflated, sagging, or wrinkled buttock cheeks. Such side effects are known to follow rapid and massive weight loss. Expect to see more patients looking for solutions to put the volume back in their deflated cheeks. Dr. Graivier is the owner and founder of The Graivier Center for Plastic Surgery & MedSpa.

Most guests are returning to celebrate a birthday, anniversary or an annual pilgrimage to this beloved resort, joining wildflower or birding hikes and settling into memorable farm-to-table meals in front of a roaring fire. Luxurious guest rooms in the inn and lovely private cottages dotting the rolling property have wood fireplaces (fire starters and plenty of seasoned wood are staples) and swoon-worthy bathrooms. Be sure to book a room with a copper soaking tub, steam shower, sauna and outdoor shower. After a day of hiking (hundreds of miles of national park are steps away from The Swag’s dog trot), retreat to your own room for a nap or wander down the hill to The Still Spa. Massages from 60 to 90 minutes and signature facials are choreographed for each guest. The Detoxifying Mud Wrap starts with a gentle dry brush exfoliation (like a lullaby) that stimulates circulation, promotes lymph flow and smoothes the skin. A warm clay cocoon, steam shower and healing herbal body oil treatment follow. May your new year be filled with the wonders of nature and the magic of a spa vacation!

How Smoothies Tie Into Your Wellness Journey

Smoothie King, 8465 Holcomb Bridge Rd, SmoothieKing.com
In today’s fast-paced world, prioritizing our well-being has become more critical. We’re in a time when people are more conscious of what they eat, drink, and do. Therefore, a balanced diet and moderate exercise are crucial in maintaining optimal health. Smoothies are a great way to get essential nutrients. Not only are they convenient, but they’re also delicious, especially when you mix ingredients that mesh well with each other. Some smoothies allow you to intake multiple servings of fruits and veggies in one cup, so that people who usually struggle to meet the recommended daily servings can get their full amount of fruits and veggies. Smoothies are a valuable addition to anyone’s daily routine because of how much they can support your overall wellness. Here are a few tips for incorporating smoothies seamlessly into your daily routine:
New Year, New Smile!
MORNING BOOST
• Kickstart your day by providing your body with energy, whether preparing your smoothie at home or stopping by your local spot. Look for high-protein mixes or go old school and add a shot of caffeine.
MEAL REPLACEMENT
• Smoothies can also serve as a meal replacement on the go for those who don’t have time due to a busy schedule. Look for smoothies that are high-protein, low-calorie with vitamins, and minerals.
FOR A SNACK
• A smoothie can be a great alternative to any snack whenever you’re craving something sweet. Grab a straw or spoon and enjoy a smoothie or smoothie bowl with whole fruits and organic veggies to keep you satisfied.

PRE OR POST WORKOUT
• If you want to incorporate smoothies into your fitness routine, you can enjoy one before or after your workout. Preworkout smoothies are a great way to get a boost of energy to enhance your performance. Post-workout smoothies support recovery and replenishment so that you can feel good afterward. Everyone has their own preferences, so be sure to experiment with different ingredients if you’re making them at home.

ICE BATHS - YAY OR NAY?

While it’s not unusual to see an athlete sit in a bathtub full of ice after a game, everyday people also take ice baths. You may wonder, “Why would someone want to take that kind of chilly plunge?” Although it might seem like another fad, the health benefits of ice baths to relieve pain and speed recovery have been known for centuries. What is an ice bath? “It involves exposing your body to temperatures you consider uncomfortably cold,” says Emory Sports Medicine Center physical therapist Anna Cottle, PT, DPT, ACT. Ice baths, also called cold plunges, are a form of cold-water therapy. When you take an ice bath, you submerge your body—up to your neck—into cold water for a specific amount of time. Experts have traced cold-water therapy back to ancient Egypt. A 1930 document called the Edwin Smith Surgical Papyrus detailed how ancient Egyptians used cold to help improve health and reduce inflammation. Ancient Greeks and Romans also used cold water therapy for medicinal purposes, as well as for relaxation. Today, we use ice baths for similar reasons. Because everyone experiences temperatures differently, what is extremely cold for one person may be warmer for someone else. “It’s very person-dependent,” Cottle says. “You don’t have to go to 32 degrees to get the benefits, especially if you’re not cold-adapted.”
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF ICE BATHS?
Although willingly submerging yourself in a tub full of ice might not sound like fun, taking the plunge has extraordinary health benefits. Cold therapy in general is a common treatment for orthopedic and sports injuries. Cottle, who received her doctorate in physical therapy, cares for many patients with hip, knee, or shoulder pain, especially after surgery. Her
athlete patients often do cold plunges after an injury or endurance workouts to aid general recovery. But in general, she recommends topical ice applications for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off to reduce pain and swelling. An added benefit of cold therapy is that it can reduce the use of pain medications during recovery. Cold therapy can accelerate muscle recovery after a tough workout. It can also help relieve pain and soreness and reduce inf lammation by causing the blood vessels to constrict and then dilate. There are also mental health benefits to ice baths. According to research, cold plunging increases the concentration of dopamine—the “feel good” chemical—in the brain by 250%. Ice baths also reduce the amount of the stress hormone cortisol. Over time, ice baths can help you become more resilient against stress.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF ICE BATHS?
Although ice baths have several benefits, they also carry risks. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that hypothermia (a dangerous drop in body temperature) can occur at water temperatures below 70 degrees. You can develop immersion hypothermia when submerging in water colder than 59 degrees. Water moves heat away from the body 25 times faster than air, so hypothermia sets in more quickly underwater. People with certain health conditions should exercise caution before trying an ice bath. For example, diabetes can affect your ability to sense tissue damage, which can occur in extremely cold water or if you stay submerged too long. You should also avoid immersion if you have an open wound or incision. Instead, you can put ice on the wound, making sure

to have a barrier to prevent the risk of getting an infection. “There can be risk when someone tries an ice bath for the first time, especially if they haven’t checked with their doctor to see if they have any underlying conditions,” Cottle says. “It’s also risky if they don’t ease themselves into it.”
HOW TO TAKE AN ICE BATH AT HOME
Before you attempt cold water therapy at home, talk to your doctor. If you get the OK, start at a warmer temperature and lower the temperature as you get adapted to the cold. Cottle recommends you start with cold showers, which are generally safe. You can also fill a tub with cold water. Problems such as hyperventilation (rapid breathing) may arise if you stay in too long when you haven’t adapted to the cold. You do not have to put your whole body in at first—you can start with your arms and legs and work your way to more of your body. You’ll also want to make sure you don’t re-warm too quickly. Going immediately into a hot temperature can be a shock to your system. Instead, warm up naturally or by drying off. Light exercises such as stretching, walking, and doing squats or pushups after an ice bath can also help with re-warming. For safety reasons, it helps to have a buddy nearby, especially if you are new to cold water therapy. You may need assistance if something happens, such as uncontrollable shivering. You also want to focus on your breath while in the bath. It can help you control your response to the cold. A friend can help you with your breathing and coach you through the immersion. Ready to take the plunge? Adding an ice bath may benefit your wellness routine, so understand the risks before you turn down the tap. If you are trying cold therapy for the first time, it’s best to have supervision. This trend may not suit everyone, so talk to your doctor or trainer first. You can also work with a physical therapist to determine the right approach for you. EmoryHealthcare.org

DE A R Jo h n s Cre e k For 40 years, North Fulton Community Charities (NFCC) has been a beacon of hope for struggling families in Roswell and North Fulton by helping prevent hunger and homelessness. We remove barriers to financial stability and employability by providing food, clothing, emergency financial assistance, and education services. With last year’s 17 percent increase in rent as well as increases in food and fuel costs, 2023 was especially challenging. People are turning to services like the food pantry and clothing assistance in record numbers to save for bills and mortgage payments. More than 300 families a day visit our food pantry for free groceries; more than 800 families a month visit our thrift shop for free clothing, and over 100 families a month receive emergency financial assistance to stay housed. We continue to raise awareness to increase donations of food, clothing and furniture. We are also renovating our education center to add three additional classrooms.
• Donate gently used clothing and household items to our thrift shop. Sales in the thrift shop are responsible for 25 percent of the annual revenue we need to provide services. • Host a food drive. We are always in need of popular staples like peanut butter, tomato sauce, and cereal. • Host an online fundraiser. Organize your office, faith community, or civic organization – or create a fundraiser to celebrate your birthday.
