I don’t know about you, but I love any opportunity to recognize the women in my life who just make it more rich and beautiful. Our sisters, mothers and daughters are some of the most influential women in our lives. My two daughters, pictured with me here, are brilliant women, with bright futures and big hearts and I’m so proud of them.
And of course with Mother’s Day this month, all eyes are on moms… But it’s not just the biological mothers, but the mother figures in our lives who have made an indelible impact on us. It’s the family members, teachers, friends and neighbors doing awesome things in our communities, pouring into our lives - making themselves unforgettable and irreplaceable.
While it’s always important to shop local and support our area businesses, this month is the perfect time to patronize businesses owned by women in our communities. That’s one of my favorite parts of this roleconnecting with and championing the best of the best when it comes to John Creek and beyond.
They are movers and shakers, builders and makers. They are both seen and unseen. Their silent service blesses those who are under their care. Their attention to detail shows us something about beauty that can’t be seen or understood any other way.
While you're enjoying this issue, pay attention to the ads (said no editor, ever!) because, without our advertising partners, we'd be pulp!
Happy Mother's Day!

Kim Gravel is known as “America’s Best Girlfriend,” as she reaches millions as a QVC host and TV personality, author and force behind an apparel and cosmetic line, now a $100M company.
Kim’s mission as a global voice is to build up women with words of encouragement, reminding them to walk in confidence, trust God, stop struggling, embrace the beauty of who they are and step into their power and purpose. Once down and out and living in a rundown apartment, this dynamo embraced her circumstances and personal power to launch her highly successful apparel line, Belle by Kim Gravel®, and she also launched the Belle Beauty® cosmetic line. She spoke last month in Duluth to share her new book Collecting Confidence: Start Where You Are to Become the Person You Were Meant to Be. We caught up with Kim to ask about her life in Georgia and what’s next.
KIM GRAVEL: I love Georgia! I have lived nearly my entire life in Georgia (specifically the metro Atlanta area) and I can’t imagine living and raising my kids somewhere else. The friendliness, the hometown feel, the Southern values of faith, family and football (well, maybe not football) has always appealed to me. One of the proudest moments of my life was when I was crowned Miss Georgia and went on to represent my state in the Miss America pageant. I was excited to share my love for Georgia in front of a national audience. It’s been a true honor to use my platform to elevate the great state of Georgia.
CL: YOU’VE SAID YOUR CALLING IN LIFE IS TO BUILD UP WOMEN. WE LOVE THAT!
KG: Yes, that’s how I’ve always seen Belle Beauty as a way to help build up women by helping them feel beautiful. Because every woman IS beautiful, even if they don’t always feel it. That’s why it’s so important to have the right clothes and make-up that support you and your specific, unique style. Those are the things that can make all the difference in the world. In addition, one of my great passions in life has been the beauty industry. From competing in beauty pageants to hosting a Lifetime reality television show helping girls compete in pageants to working in some of the top-name beauty brands, beauty has been a constant in my life. Founding my own beauty brand has been a dream come true.

RENOVATIONS,
Answering the urgent call for families faced with the challenge of caring for a loved one at home is Senior911’s mission. A nurse-owned and operated private-duty home care provider provides assistance with activities of daily living, manages meal preparation, medication reminders, concierge service, and skilled nursing services. The staff is dementia-certified and takes a holistic approach to every service. We caught up with Sonja Gunter, Nurse Administrator with Senior911 to get to know her.
CITY LIFESTYLE: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A YOUNG WOMAN ENTERING YOUR INDUSTRY TODAY?
SONJA GUNTER: Buckle up and dig deep. Being the owner of your own business is quite gratifying and rewarding. But never forget, the baby is yours. You birthed it. So just like your own newborn baby, no one is going to nurture it like you. You have to consistently share the vision and pray that the people on your team believe in that vision as well. This means during the ebbs and flows, you must also remain a believer. Then there’s the added pressure of owning a home care business. You must remain selfless, patient, and empathetic with not only the clients we serve, but the staff who serves them as well.
CL: HOW DO YOU DESTRESS, FIND YOUR ZEN, AND RELAX AT THE END OF A BUSY DAY?
SG: I created a very relaxing atmosphere in my bedroom with aromatic candles and low lights. It is my safe space. So when I get home, I head upstairs, light candles, turn on jazz music, and prepare to relax for the night.
CL: WHAT ARE YOUR PET PEEVES IN THE BUSINESS WORKPLACE?
SG: Mediocrity. Average performance. I am high energy most days and I have very high expectations. I tell everyone who comes to work for Senior911, if you are looking for just another agency, it will not work. I will not tolerate a subpar work ethic. Thankfully, my office staff understands this and shares my sentiments.
CL: HOW WILL YOU BE SPENDING MOTHER’S DAY THIS YEAR?
SG: I am not sure of the details yet, but most certainly, relaxing somewhere. Hopefully somewhere warm with beautiful blue waters.

She employs more than 50 people, mostly immigrant women like herself, who she hopes one day will become business owners. All team members are licensed estheticians, expertly trained to provide one of the best hair removal experiences possible. Raquel managed to maintain her entire team during COVID and took extraordinary precautions to keep the doors open and to protect her clientele and staff.
Always an advocate for women and women’s health, Raquel proactively replaced talcum powder with cornstarch when she learned of the link between the powder and ovarian cancer. This year she partnered with the Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance (GOCA) to launch a grassroots education program. This partnership will directly impact the thousands of women each week who visit one of the Atlanta area Sweet Peach locations, as each guest will be given information on the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer in an effort to promote early detection.
“Since my business is predominately focused on the pelvic area of women who want to look good on the outside, I also want them to be healthy on the inside,” says Souza. “The partnership with GOCA gives us the opportunity to educate our captive audience of women from their 20s to their 80s and, hopefully, save lives.”

On pleasant afternoons, Lizen Hayes’ gaze wanders from her laptop on her office desk to watch turtles and frogs frolic in the Star Pond and deer grazing on grasses and persimmons. She listens for the song birds, a welcome reminder that she is doing her job. As Executive Director at The Autrey Mill Nature Preserve and Heritage Center, she oversees the 46 acre preserve with three miles of scenic trails, a tribe of animals including goats, ducks, snakes and other reptiles, a historic village and the visitors center in Johns Creek.
“I am extremely lucky to have the support of past and present Autrey Mill board members, volunteers, and dedicated staff,” says Lizen. “I love working with the community, kids, animals and in the gardens. My hope is to continually improve upon the work and visions that came before me to ensure the accessibility and future of Autrey Mill Nature Preserve as a valued community space.”
She was first introduced to Autrey Mill in 2017 when her family volunteered to walk goats and
explore becoming docents. “My wife and I adopted an 11-year-old girl and we were trying to find a way for our new family to connect to each other and our community. Goat walking ended up being a challenge and a great bonding activity for my new family.”
With a degree in museum studies and experience at Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, when her career in promotional marketing came to a halt during the COVID-19 pandemic, she took a leap of faith and applied to work at Autrey Mill as a program administrator. “I started off as admin support and eventually my role grew. One wears many hats in non-profit work. The previous Executive Director moved to Texas to be closer to family and I was called upon by the Autrey Mill board to fill the position.”
The Autrey Mill Nature Preserve and Heritage Center of today was built under the leadership and vision of the board, talented staff, and local government officials. Identified as a potential nature preserve by Fulton County in 1972, but not purchased, CONTINUED >
“I love to sit on the swing in our butterfly garden in the quiet mornings and drink my coffee. And on nice days you will find me and my co-workers at the picnic tables in front of the visitor center working on our computers, having a meeting, or eating lunch together,” says Lizen, who holds a deep respect for the land, its history and the volunteers who make everything possible.
“Autrey Mill would never be able to offer educational family and kids programming and care for our animal ambassadors without the support of our dedicated community, volunteers, board members, and other local organizations who dedicate over 2000 volunteer hours a year to help us run our programs,” she says. They also host corporate volunteer workgroups for scouts and individuals who want to give back.
This month, on Saturday, May 6, Autrey Mill will be a stop on the Johns Creek Beautification, Secret Garden Tour. This is also the time of year that the endangered wild orchid, the lady slipper, is in bloom. Join a guided tour of the secret patches of lady slippers during the garden tour. Each Sunday in May there is a Sunday Social where a program host will lead a craft or activity in front of a historic building open for tours.

In 2016, Sherry Xia opened her flower shop in Johns Creek, Summer Breeze Flowers & Gifts, named after her only daughter, Summer Hang. But the story began for Sherry in China many years prior to moving to the States.
Sherry said she was a tomboy growing up and never envisioned herself designing floral arrangements. Her husband was a prominent television producer in China. He came home one day and announced that he bought a flower shop! Just like that, out of the blue. So, Sherry found herself running a flower shop and designing arrangements and bouquets. She found that working with flowers was relaxing and that she had a real knack for it.
Eventually, the family moved to the United States. Summer was young when Sherry opened Summer Breeze Flowers & Gifts. An obvious name for the shop was after her beautiful daughter. As Summer grew, she quickly learned the business and designing arrangements came very naturally just as it did for her mom. Summer took over the shop in 2021. She then expanded and opened a second shop in West Midtown.
Summer says she loves being both a business owner and a working mom. She now has her first child, Jaxson. Hopefully one day she will be able to pass the business on to her son, “but only if he’s interested!” says Summer.
SHERRY SAID SHE WAS A TOMBOY GROWING UP AND NEVER ENVISIONED HERSELF DESIGNING FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS.
What Summer most loves about the flower shop business is the meaning behind each arrangement, from congratulating a newborn, to celebrating meaningful days or remembering a loved one. Each arrangement has a beautiful story behind it and is given to express love or thankfulness. Flowers are part of everyone’s life on almost every special occasion. The story continues when a customer calls Summer to let her know how beautiful the arrangements are or how happy the recipient is when they receive the flowers. That is truly “happily ever after.”

Sankranti is an Indian fine dining restaurant and banquet hall in Johns Creek, Georgia. The name Sankranti (pronounced sum-kraanthi ) translates to “positive change” in Sanskrit and is derived from the traditional three-day Indian harvest festival that shares its name.
India was primarily an agrarian society for several centuries. Apart from the spiritual side, Sankranti is celebrated as a 3-day harvest festival. Crops are harvested, brought home and distributed during this season. Even to this day, the celebration is common throughout India. Family members typically gather at their ancestral home in small villages, where elaborate meals are specially prepared with care and love. Friends and neighbors are invited and everyone feels like they are all part of one family. After enjoying lavish and delicious meals, they enjoy playing various sports and games.
Each January during Sankranti, family, friends, and neighbors gather to enjoy abundant meals and spend quality time
together, much like Thanksgiving in the United States. The restaurant strives to bring the same ambiance to its guests.
237 Perimeter Center Parkway, Suite H-56, Dunwoody COMING SOON! Emory Village, 1569 N. Decatur Road, Atlanta
Sankranti’s all-day menu boasts fresh, made-to-order varieties of curry bowls, karma rolls, veggie samosas, salads, and desserts. Meat, vegetarian, and vegan dishes are available to suit any palate. Guests can choose from pulao rice, jeera rice, or grilled vegetables as the base of their bowls, rolls, or salads and add proteins including spicy chicken, mango chicken, kurma chicken, tikka chicken, chana (chickpea), and paneer (cheese). Sauce options include house yogurt, creamy tikka, sweet tamarind, and spicy mint. Curry bowls such as paneer tikka masala and chana masala are popular vegetarian choices. SankrantiRestaurants.com
TELL US ABOUT YOUR DAY JOB.
I am the COO of Marsh McLennan Agency LLC, Southeast.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A YOUNG WOMAN ENTERING YOUR INDUSTRY TODAY?
Work will never love you back – but people do! Make sure your time allocation reflects what matters. There will be seasons in your career where your balance seems unbalanced, but this does even out and you’ll reflect on skills gained and relationships built along the way.
HOW DO YOU DESTRESS, FIND YOUR ZEN, AND RELAX AT THE END OF A BUSY DAY?
I love to run outside – temperatures tend to allow this during most months in Georgia. Sports spectating is also
a hobby– mainly football and baseball. My favorite athlete to watch is my son.
WHAT ARE YOUR PET PEEVES IN THE WORKPLACE?
The attitude of “that’s not my job.” If you’re not willing to do what it takes to show others how it’s done or expand yourself by doing what is needed, then good luck!
HOW WILL YOU BE SPENDING MOTHER’S DAY THIS YEAR?
I will attend church at Passion City then brunch at Table & Main Roswell. I may even convince my husband and son to join me for a nature walk! And of course, call my own mom and mother-in-law.

The moms and the mother figures in our lives mean everything to us. They deserve the best every day, of course. But at least one day out of the year, we get to shower them with the same love and thoughtfulness they give to us so selflessly.
This year, we hope you’ll consider some memorable ways to make lasting memories with the mom or mother figure in your life. If you haven’t already planned something special, take a look at our list of ideas and circle your favorites. If you have kids, let them join in the fun too!
Whether you decide to spend a day at home or enjoy a day on the town, these innovative celebration ideas will include fun for the whole family and make Mom feel loved. Whatever activity or surprise you land on to show your mom, wife, sister or maternal figure your appreciation for all they do, the most important thing is that you all get to spend some quality time together.
Whether you make the brews and treats yourself or head out to an official tea house, Mom will love sipping her beverage out of fancy china and snacking on tea sandwiches.
This activity is especially fun if you have a lot of kids who want to get in on the action. Then, when you all get home, you can whip up a treat for Mom with your selections. (Maybe give her a strawberry in a Champagne glass while she waits.)
There’s no day like Mother’s Day to be impulsive! Book a weekend trip for the two of you at a cute B&B in a city Mom has always wanted to visit.
Find a puzzle with an image you know your mom will love (or make a custom one using a photo of the two of you) and put it together over wine and snacks. You’ll be amazed at how much chatting you can get done while puzzling.
Take a Flower Arranging Class
Mother’s Day arrives just as spring is in full bloom. Take advantage of the season by going to a flower arranging class with mom.
