I am so excited and honored to be a part of this issue! I have been fixated on fashion and fashion history my entire life, so when editor Sue Collins invited me to be the guest editor for the style issue I was beyond thrilled. I've dined and especially SHOPPED in Johns Creek for over 20 years now and I’ve seen so many changes. New boutiques are popping up all the time. Shopping at ChanElizabeth for the cool girl essentials is one of my new favorite spots, thanks to the research I’ve done for this issue. I also like to stop in at Finer Consigner every once in a while to see what they have for resale handbags. One of my passions is shopping resale and vintage shopping - I take customers to Paris for shopping trips and the number one request is always shopping for vin tage at the Paris Flea Markets. Recently I found a beautiful Fendi baguette that was just perfect to carry for my Sunday brunch at Besties Empanadas and Belgian Waffles - have you been? Besties is so chic with their orange chairs and fashionable art on the walls including a pair of silver slippers. It’s just perfect for a girlfriend’s brunch or lunch. Every day is an adventure for Catalina Gomez Beuth of Johns Creek. The world is full of colors, emotions, experiences, controversy, heartache, and joy. Catalina notices it all. She doesn’t just “see” things. In peaceful moments of intention when her breath slows down, she “observes” what is around her, and absorbs the moment she is living. Then in a deeply empathetic way gets curious about how to capture her observations on a canvas. The becoming of this canvas turns into arrival when it is the soft start of a conversation that could develop deep roots, a solid trunk, and branches that spread far and wide connecting people and community.

When Catalina isn’t painting, she’s observing, moving, and living in the art of the world adding her own brush strokes of beauty to Johns Creek. On any given night of the week, Catalina hosts painting cohorts to share her inspirational space, laugh, learn, and create synergisti cally. She dreams of art being valued as a universal lan guage cultivating conversation and hopes for her work and that of others to be showcased in more public places for community exploration. Catalina has always painted, but only in the last eight years has she turned it into her soul’s work. Leslie Murphy of Johns Creek Art Center provided Catalina some initial guidance and under Leslie’s encouragement, Catalina began submit ting work to exhibitions hosted by JCAC. She then solicited help from Duluth artist, Larry Smith, who guided her to create vivid color palettes further igniting her passion for oil painting. As Catalina gained momentum it was her hus band who insisted she pursue her dream. Since that moment, Catalina’s home has become a living and breathing gallery of works in various stages of becoming, delighting her family and visitors in the constant creation and birth of artwork. Influenced by life stage, current events, and experiences, Catalina acknowledges that both fear and admiration are part of the inspiration for her musings. Interestingly whatever painting she is working on becomes her favorite. While she continues to evolve as an artist by introducing sculptures and installations to her pieces, her consistent style involves vibrant backgrounds, expressive hands, and neutral color skin—a place for one’s eyes to rest. In doing so, Catalina’s hope is that the beholder connects with the subject’s expression, becomes vulnerable in relating to that expression, and senses the piece from a heart-centered place. Catalina aspires for her art to create opportunities to feel both good and hard things, that it gives the viewer permission to remember, consider, and dream. Catalina believes all of her work will speak its own language and grows alongside its owner. She aspires for her paintings to create a life within their spaces, that complements one’s soul.

Mark Toro, who developed Avalon, is also planning a mixed-use development in Johns Creek as well. Did you know that close to 46,000 Americans died by suicide in 2020, and in the state of Georgia alone, more than 1,500 lives were lost due to sui cide in (Sources:2019?Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention) Here in Johns Creek and across the United States, The SAM Foundation’s mission is to prevent suicide through public awareness and education. It is a nonprofit that promotes mental health awareness and provides suicide pre vention training programs at no cost to participants. Ultimately, the founda tion hopes to change the way our com munities view mental health and serve as a resource to those who have been affected by suicide.

HOW THE SAM FOUNDATION IS MAKING A DIFFERENCE

The foundation is providing life-sav ing programs to people all over the United States. The foundation is work ing with Johns Creek school counselors and teachers, corporate groups and other members of our community, and it provides higher-level training and certification programs to first responders and mental health profes sionals. All programs are free of charge, and the foundation partners with and supports other like-minded organiza tions across the country.

HOW YOU CAN HELP The SAM Foundation welcomes vol unteers of all kinds – to help behind the scenes, for special events and fundraisers, during training classes, or by creating a fundraiser of their own. Individuals can register for a training class, share information about the foundation with others, sign up for the e-newsletter, connect on social media (Instagram: @TheSAMFound or Facebook: @TheSAMFound), or support its programs through a dona tion (as a 501(c)(3), all donations are tax-deductible).“Suicideprevention training is vital to our communities because you never know when someone is in need,” said Smith. “I wish that I had had the training that we are now providing in order to know what questions I could have asked Sam and what steps I could have tried to persuade him to get help. He might still be here with us.” SAMFound.org

Since its start, The SAM Foundation has trained more than 6,000 indi viduals in suicide prevention. At the beginning of one school year alone, a group of counselors from one Alabama county that were trained by The SAM Foundation successfully intervened in the lives of 18 students who were having thoughts of suicide and were able to get them help.

Julie Smith, her sister, Nicole Goggans, and their mother, Vicki Prewett, created The SAM Foundation four years ago in memory of their brother and son, Sam Johnson. Sam died by suicide on December 17, 2002. While the founda tion is named for Sam, it also is an acro nym that reflects its mission: Suicide Awareness Means...Hope.
