MY MOM EMILY KEPT A PINK AVON LIPSTICK, CLEAR PLASTIC RAIN HAT, WHITE COMB, A&P COUPONS AND A FEW CLEAN TISSUES IN HER PURSE AT ALL TIMES. She wore an apron on Sundays when she made dinner, still dressed for church where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. She served on the local symphony board, wrote thank you notes and had a stunning smile.

She was a Phi Beta Kappa, studying and writing poetry, moving through her days as a mother to six children with gentle thoughtfulness and intentional efficiency.

When she and my dad divorced after 36 years of marriage, they both found new partners and seemed to breathe deep with relief and freedom. Mom continued to care for her new husband with feminine grace, though I don’t think she wore aprons

In all the sweet memories of her, among my favorites are those moments when, completely out of character, she would curse. Yup, that was the best. Cursing has come a long way and back then, was kinder and more gentle.

But still, when Em would drop a schnizzle* or a heck, the world came to a screeching halt.

It must have been all that vocal training, but she could project, launching a dangit across the kitchen with the propulsion and volume of a hydrogen bomb. It didn’t happen that often (RIP, Mom) but at those moments, my very own June Cleaver would morph into a real

CANCER STRIDES AT NORTHSIDE Northside Hospital Cancer Institute (NHCI) Immunotherapy Program now offers access to another chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell immunotherapy for treatment of adult acute lymphoid leukemia and certain types of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Kymriah® CAR T-cell therapy is made from a patient’s own white blood cells, the prescription cancer treatment is used in patients up to 25 years old who have acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) that is either relapsing (went into remission, then came back) or is refractory (did not go into remission after receiving other leukemia treatments). It is also used in patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma that has relapsed or is refractory after having at least two other kinds of treatment. Immunotherapy works by taking immune cells, genetically modifying them to be better tumor-fighting immune cells, multiplying them to great numbers (tens of thousands), and then infusing them into the patient where they can find and attack cancer.

FULTON SCI ACADEMY STATE CHAMPS The Fulton Science Academy Science Olympiad won its first state championship in team history. The team has been focused on their event studies since September and put in extra effort since the Regional Tournament in February.

Students and coaches came in early, worked through lunch and recess, stayed at school late into the evening, and devoted Saturday mornings toward this goal. The team concentrated on improving weaker events while still trying to advance their strongest events.

The team will now travel to Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, for the National Tournament.

A CENTURY BEFORE THIS DEEP-WATER BAY ON A LAKE LANIER PENINSULA BECAME A PREMIER LAKEFRONT COMMUNITY, IT WAS WILDERNESS— THERE WERE FEW PEOPLE LIVING IN THIS REMOTE VALLEY, AND UNDEVELOPED LAND WAS PLENTIFUL AND CHEAP. When the Great Depression devastated the United States economy in the 1930s, across much of the country, you could barely give land away. Rafe Banks, III, a sixth-generation Hall County resident and prominent area attorney, recalls that this is when his grandfather handed down a large parcel of land to Rafe’s father.

“It was in the middle of nowhere and wasn’t worth much at the time. Mother tells the story that when my father took her to see it, they drove, and drove, and drove, and got to 'Nowhere,' and there it was.”

Although this area in Southern Hall County would remain largely undeveloped for decades, in the 1950s The Army Corp of Engineers built the Buford Dam and flooded the 37,000-acre valley to create Lake Sidney Lanier. Much of the Banks’ land ended up under water, and the Banks family subsequently ended up with several miles of shoreline. Over time, they built a lake house, a dock, and a family tradition that transcended generations.

“It was idyllic—a Norman Rockwell place where we would gather with friends and family and have fun for many years.
