April showers bring May flowers! I HATE PAPER TOWELS. I buy two rolls each year, just before Thanksgiving. With more meals being prepared by more hands in the kitchen, I bow down to the handiness of these earth crushing rectangles of convenient absorbency. The two rolls last until February or so. Then, it’s back to using dish clothes, towels and sponges to wipe down and clean up. I find paper bags work fine to absorb bacon grease and there’s nothing better than newspaper for washing windows. So, when my sweet sister-in-law visited from New Jersey a few months ago, she busied herself in the kitchen making tea and asked where my paper towel was. My husband glanced up, smiling, knowing what was about to go down. “We

don’t use paper towel,” I said matter of factly. “WHAT? What do you mean? You’re out?” She didn’t believe me and continued to open cupboard doors, looking under the sink and moving the toaster and coffee maker as if I’d hid a bulking roll of Bounty in a fun kitchen game.I explained that it’s just something we do.I could see the distaste and confusion wash across her face. “How do you keep your kitchen clean? You can’t just use sponges and towels. Come on, Sue!” My husband put the newspaper down to watch.Standing in my bright, germ-free, scrubbed down kitchen, I calmly explained that not using paper

Institute has been named a Center of Excellence for a minimally-invasive stenting procedure that effectively treats carotid artery disease in older and high risk patients. Northside is one of the first hospitals in the state of Georgia to receive this recognition, and offers the technology at its Atlanta, Cherokee and Forsyth locations. The procedure, called Trans Carotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR), treats blockages in the carotid (neck) artery to reduce the risk of stroke, particularly in patients older than 75 years, and in patients at high risk for conventional open surgery. Northside is among the first in Georgia participating in this procedure, which was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2015. Northside is one of the first facilities in Georgia to earn the distinction from Silk Road Medical. Dr. Siddharth Patel, a general and vascular surgeon at Northside Hospital Heart and Vascular Institute, was the first physician to perform TCAR at Northside Hospital in 2016, shortly after it became available. IT’S VERY EASY TO TALK ABOUT HOW BUSY OUR LIVES ARE, NEEDING MORE TIME TO RELAX OR WISHING WE HAD MORE VACATION TIME. But when we actually some time away from our hectic schedules, it’s even more difficult to unwind these days. I’ve heard many people say that it takes them several days at the beginning of a vacation just to relax and remove their mind from worrying about all the work and responsibilities left behind before actually being able to let go and enjoy the down time. Perhaps it’s not our racing minds but the fact that we’re tied (literally with plugs, cords and headphones) to our cell phones 24/7. Given all that, I was determined to unplug myself and my entire family during the off-season before spring arrived, so we packed up the car and head to Destin, Florida, for an extended weekend getaway. Thanks to Newman-Daily Resort Properties, I was able to score an amazing beach front condo right in the heart of Miramar Beach. Arriving at Jade East Tower we were welcomed by a beautiful property

After a quick unload of the car (along with some old board games, books and magazines) we reluctantly decided the best way to truly enjoy our time was to all place our cell

phones in a bowl on the counter. It sounded crazy to us, too! But after taking a walk on the cool sand, watching the tide roll in and sun gently begin the set, knew we were on our way to recharging ourselves, not our phones! Part of the fun for us when we travel is exploring local restaurants, so we ventured out each night to a Destin hotspot recommended by the helpful staff at NewmanDailey. We enjoyed mouth-watering Grouper sandwiches from a true “local” spot, Dewey Destins, giant Bairdi crab at The Crab Trap and fresh gulf-caught fish at Brotulas--so fresh, the fish came with a barcode that

tracked where and when the piece of fish was caught! And for the meals not eaten out, our condo had a gorgeous kitchen equipped with everything we needed. And even through we’d been to Destin before, we thought it might be a fun family activity to explore the area via Segway. We looked to Destination Segway Tours for a different adventure, and as it happened to be a cloudy day, it was a better choice for the day than the beach. After the owner gave us a quick tutorial and lesson on how to ride, we headed out for some exploring and a lot of fun. And, we learned some nifty history facts about Destin we never knew! Global Sports Matters, since 2001, lacrosse has added more than half a million participants from youth to the professional level. One of the local programs offered to residents interested in playing lacrosse is the Johns Creek Junior Gladiator program, a feeder program to Johns Creek High School where the girls lacrosse program was launched in 2010. Last fall, the Junior Gladiator program lowered the entry point to third grade due to the high interest of younger girls who wanted to play the sport. The program has multiple teams for grades 3 – 5 and for grades 6 – 8. All grade level teams offer lacrosse as a recreational sport in the fall with a more competitive “edge” during the spring, which is when the sport is played in high school. These younger girls playing our area now have an opportunity to gain more experience and start at an earlier age. So if they want to learn the sport, improve their game and this program offers an amazing opportunity

The Johns Creek High School program has grown from 38 girls in 2016 to approximately 60 girls in 2019 representing the Junior Varsity and Varsity teams. In 2016, the Johns Creek High School team made it to the elite 8, finishing 2nd in the area and in 2017 made it to the Sweet 16 (after expanding playoffs to 32 teams), finishing fourth in the area. Again in 2019, the team made it to the Sweet 16, finishing second in the area. Since the program began, Johns Creek High School has had many girls continue on to play college D1, D2, and D3 lacrosse. When starting lacrosse, it is never too late to learn and excel at the sport. Case in point, one former Junior Gladiator, who started playing lacrosse in 8th grade, now plays at a D1 school doing an amazing job. On February 6, “National Girl & Women in Sports Day,” two seniors from Johns Creek High School signed to play lacrosse in college at a ceremony held after school. Rachel Quinn and Casey Davis have played since elementary school, starting with the Johns Creek Junior Gladiator program, and now as seniors have elected to continue. At a recent game, Johns Creek’s first annual partnership with a program called Lace Up with Lax was launched, helping those in need through donating shoes at FosterCares.org. During the night, lacrosse players, coaches, spectators and the community donated new pairs of shoes for children. The mission of this national nonprofit organization is to define the legacy of players off the field by helping end homelessness one step at a time. Since Lace Up With LAX’s inception in 2013, 2,000+ pairs of NEW shoes have been donated to homeless shelters throughout the United States. For more information on the lacrosse programs in Johns Creek, visit JrGladiatorsLAX.org or JohnsCreekAthletics.org. 18

Even though rattan and woven wicker furniture is not anything new to the Summer Classics product line, our designers really dove deep this year as they added a “vintage coastal” twist to the new designs. Eco-Conscious Design: Many brands are investing in scientific research & cutting-edge technologies to create beautiful products while minimizing their environmental impact. Summer Classics is also doing its part to preserve the health of our environment. If sustainable design is on your radar this year, check out the stylish Wind Collection made with Resysta, an Earth-friendly resin produced from rice husks, salt, and mineral oil. a modern take on the Adirondack chair, two of our newest collections, Ashland and Kennebunkport, are inspired off of this classic style seating that has stood the test of time. The trend of “outdoor living” really come to life over the years as technology and social media has become a way of living. People are looking for a place to escape, so what better way to escape, than in your own backyard (or balcony), with the classic style Adirondack chair you grew-up lounging in. DARING COLOR: Today, most furniture brands are offering a plethora of textiles in every pattern, texture, and shade of the rainbow. Color can influence our mood and convey our individuality, so use it to your advantage! Tasteful neutrals will always occupy a special place in our heart, but this outdoor living trend for 2019 is a chance to be bold with beautiful hues. LESS IS MORE: As the old saying goes, “Sometimes less is more.” In 2019, design trends are revealing this oft-repeated idiom to be true; the minimalist design is having a major comeback. Streamlined silhouettes, functional materials, and muted color palettes are all important elements of this understated design trend. April 2019 | Johns Creek Lifestyle

Based in Buckhead’s bustling Terminus Atlanta complex, the renowned Chef George Laudun recently engaged 15 prospective and returning patrons with another one of his mouth-watering, multiple-course cooking demonstrations using solely the company’s state-of-the-art appliances sold on site. Sizzling sea scallops sautéed to perfection and flame licked primecut beef filets are just a few of Chef George’s dishes for his audience to sample, and duplicate at home. He shared his recipes and an appreciation for the appliances that made this meal possible. Everything utilized in the

Whether attendees are seated directly in front of Chef George or at high tops, everyone enjoys a perfect view thanks to a rotating camera capturing every chop, pour and plating screened on numerous HD monitors. All participants indulge in the late-morning session’s menu featuring proteins, plus a cheese and charcuterie platter, a fresh seasonal green salad, garlic potatoes seasoned with bacon, citrus asparagus, Georgia grass-raised beef tenderloins and a caramel sauce to drizzle over the airy profiteroles all made from scratch. Once Laudun’s engaging demonstration concluded, members of the audience dabbed the corners of their mouths, and immediately asked showroom representatives to lead them to appliances that would upgrade their existing and future kitchens.

THE EXPERIENCE WAS GREAT DUE TO ITS SIZE, BUT WAS STILL VERY INTIMATE. THE INTERACTION FROM CHEF GEORGE WAS GREAT, IT WAS NICE TO BE ABLE TO ASK QUESTIONS AT THE END, AND HE MADE IT LOOK INCREDIBLY EASY TO MAKE SOME GREAT DISHES, SO I DECIDED TO ADD THE CONVECTION OVEN ONTO MY ORDER.
dishwasher built on Sub-Zero and Wolf’s technology—the Georgia Division’s Vice President of Sales Don DeLong provided more insight. “We have done chef demonstrations to some extent since 1997 in Orlando, Florida,” DeLong says. “Our goal was to give the luxury customer the ability to experience our products and not just take someone’s word. Chef George is our corporate chef and has been with us 14 years. What we love about him is his ability to connect with the customers at a common level, and to make our presentations about the products and their extensive capabilities. Where many chefs make their demo about them and their food, Chef George does an excellent job of showing the customer how easy it is to prepare meals with Wolf. We like to think customers leave our demos with confidence, saying, ‘I can do that.’” And after the delectable exhibition, what’s the next step? “No matter how large or small a project, our showroom staff can provide concierge-level service from inspiration to installation,” DeLong informs. “We will then match them up with one of our dealers and after installation, they can return and attend one of our use-and-care classes. While we do have websites and a 24/7 customer-care line, we want everyone to know we are a valuable resource before and after the sale. The best part is we get to establish a relationship with our customers. Not a lot of brands can do that these days. It’s not cheap to run a showroom, but we feel it is well worth the investment.” One of the guests in the showroom, Michael Berthiaume, was researching his investment. “I found out about this demonstration when I was at the showroom outfitting a new home I am building in the Atlanta area,” Berthiaume says. “The experience was great due to its size, but was still very intimate. The interaction from Chef George was great, it was nice to be able to ask questions at the end, and he made it look incredibly easy to make some great dishes, so I decided to add the convection oven onto my order.” Along with regular cooking demonstrations and instructional classes, there are also opportunities to receive private, hands-on learning opportunities and appliance consultation. And although there are locations worldwide, Chef George and DeLong’s Buckhead showroom is certainly a standout perfectly seasoned with Southern hospitality. For more information on Atlanta’s Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove, visit Subzero-Wolf.com/atlanta. It is located at 3280 Peachtree Road NE, Suite 200.

going green REUSE YOUR WAY TO SUSTAINABLE LIVING
THE NEXT TIME YOU ASK FOR A PLASTIC STRAW, GRAB PLASTIC BAGS AT THE GROCERY STORE OR BUY A BOTTLE OF WATER ON YOUR WAY TO THE GYM (WE’RE ALL GUILTY OF SOMETHING!), you should also know that roughly half of the annual plastic production’s lifespan ends after just a single use. And most single-use plastics aren’t even making it to landfills, let alone being recycled. Instead, the equivalent of one garbage truck full of plastic is being dumped into the world’s oceans every minute. Curb your single-use plastic consumption with these reusable counterparts.
