Hello Johns Creek WHEN I WAS IN EIGHTH GRADE, MY BROTHER GAVE ME A BOOK OF FASHION PHOTOGRAPHS BY RICHARD AVEDON. This little Midwest girl shopped at The Gap and some other long-gone boutique in the local mall. I was a short tomboy with zero fashion sense but knew that book was something special. The only thing I had in common with those models was the gap between my two front teeth, a look shared by the leggy Lauren Hutton. I pored over those pages, appreciating, even then, the composure and confidence that fine clothing promised. While I never possessed pieces by Halston, Dior or Yves Saint Laurent, I somehow found my confidence from simple separates and today have more blue in my closet than I probably should. But, style is personal. And, fashion is about finding things that make you feel like the best you. The Instagrammers in this issue have each found a niche, splashing out their own

COLLEEN FINN IS OBSESSED WITH PEOPLE’S STORIES. How couples meet. The path that leads to the altar. Their trips, their falls and the joy that happens when you least expect it and need it most. She is a storyteller, working with families to suss out their lore, their very own legacy. Colleen Finn is not a writer though. She is a talented artist and illustrator, with more than 20 years experience in design, typography and art fueling her new company, Love Lettering. She designs and hand-letters posters as tributes to families, memorials to loved ones, celebrations of marriage and retirement send-offs. Each project begins with a survey completed by her client. As a group (family, friends, parents) they fill in important dates, favorite songs, inside jokes, vacation destinations and these 50 or so poignant memories inspire her designs. “My bespoke typography and custom illustrations become tangible reminders of all things that my clients find most dear to their hearts,” Colleen said. She has created these modern family crests for family reunions, anniversaries, birthdays, weddings, retirement and memorial services.

“For us, the survey that we were given was the best part of the process. As a family we laughed, cried and reminisced about wonderful memories. To this day we continue to look at our Love Lettering with a grateful heart,” said one client from New Jersey. Colleen works with groups near and far and the final work of art, hand-lettered on canvas usually measures 20 inches x 30 inches. Smaller works and other applications are available. Colleen studied illustration at the Creative Circus, the two-year Atlanta portfolio school for designers, copywriters, photographers and art directors who go on to work in top advertising and design agencies. She earned her Master of Fine Arts from SCAD and was teaching at the Creative Circus until recently. “I’m on a sabbatical from academia for a while to concentrate on Love Lettering. I think the timing is right,” she said.

In the early 1900s, the arts and crafts movement settled us back into beautiful design and an appreciation for fine craftsmanship.” She is all about leaving technology behind, embracing the texture of the paper, the density of color applied by hand and the love that she pours into each and every love letter. Many of her designs, crafted by hand, have a vintage vibe--a nod to nostalgia, heritage and authenticity–values that endure. “Jewelry has always been more than a piece of metal,” she says. From crowns for kings and queens to wedding rings, charm bracelets and dog tags, jewelry is tied up with identity. It makes a claim about who we are, what we value, where we have been and where we are going. “We have emotional attachments to jewelry, and I want to honor that. Rhodes' artisan jewelry lines include an Everyday Collection of mixed metals and natural stones and an Equestrian Collection (the hand-hammered horseshoe necklace is Rhodes’ best-selling piece.) Her Custom and Private Label gives anyone the opportunity to afford a oneof-a-kind piece. It is these that she most enjoys creating. For one customer who had just lost her mother, Rhodes designed a diamond-rimmed medallion engraved with all her mother’s favorite sayings. The artist also finds great worth in designing for charitable causes. After the devastating Northern California wildfires, Rhodes’ necklace #SantaRosaStrong raised funds to aid those who had lost their homes. Currently, she is working with the families of two local boys who were severely injured in a home explosion. She designed two necklaces inscribed with a Bible verse that coincides with the date of the accident (6/12/18): 1 Timothy: 6: 12 & 18 “Fight the good fight of faith…” All net proceeds from the overwhelming response will go to the boys’ continued care.
