MY SISTER JULIE RUNS MARATHONS, IS RAISING TWIN 9-YEAR-OLDS AND WORKS FULL TIME TEACHING. She makes me feel important, funny and layered. She is smart and sassy and my pick for a quick autumn trip to Park City, Utah. We would need to stay busy, booking fishing, hiking, biking and outdoor adventures that made us turn to the hot tub for solace at the end of the day. Shopping for locally made gifts, grabbing lunch in town at The Eating Establishment, copping a ride up the chairlift for overwhelmingly stunning foliage photos and stopping in to High West Distillery and Saloon for some whiskey tasting would make us both happy, though we'd be happy just to sit around in our robes for an hour, max, before Park City called us to come out and play.

FINANCIAL BUZZ

SPRING CLEANING COUNTS ARTICLE BO GIBBS | PHOTOGRAPHY CHRISTY LEE

Johns Creek Lifestyle | May 2018

SPRING IS HERE AND IF YOU TACKLE YOUR FINANCES LIKE YOUR SPRING CLEANING CHORES, YOU SHOULD BE IN A MUCH CLEARER FINANCIAL POSITION. I say clearer, not necessarily better, because before you can move forward, especially in finances, you need to know where you are right now. Here’s my suggested financial spring cleaning “to do” list… SORT, CATEGORIZE AND IDENTIFY 1-Clean and organize your finances into two groups – out-going and in-coming. Outgoing are monthly bills and in-coming are accounts where you have assets, and of course, your income. 2- Dust off all your “accounts” – that means all those 401k/IRA statements from old employers, money markets, CD’s, and all the places you have funds. Gather your statements, put them in a binder, folder or envelope. Just put them in one place and label them. 3-Get clear about your out-going. Know exactly what you are spending each month and on what. You can find a multitude of budget and expense worksheets on-line, ready to plug-in your information. GET READY TO DEEP CLEAN! Gather your statements of all those former employer 401k’s and IRA’s, pull out those CD’s and money markets and next make an appointment to see a financial planner; and make sure they are a fiduciary! A fiduciary is someone who is legally bound to provide financial advice in your best interest. Get educated, discover your options. Caring for these accounts are like mulch protecting your flower beds. They hold nutrients so your accounts grow, they provide protection from a harsh environment and they preserve the root of the plant. Deep cleaning your out-going expenses can be tough and hard to face, yet once you’ve looked them square in the eye and say “I own this,” you are ready.

Bo Gibbs, President and CEO of Gibbs Financial Group has more than 20 years’ experience in the financial services industry, is a fiduciary and received the highest A+ rating from both the Better Business Bureau and the National Ethics Association. PARTING THOUGHTS

IT’S CHANGE THAT KEEPS ME YOUNG AT HEART ARTICLE DEBRA BOICE

I

WALKED

INTO

PARK

PLACE

AT

NEWTOWN SCHOOL HEARD SINGING, AND IT CHANGED MY LIFE. As a result of an automobile accident, I left the mortgage business and surrendered to the fact I would not be able to sit or heal from my injuries until I could take a leap of faith to follow a new path. So, I have been walking, shooting baskets, and hitting tennis balls on backboard at Newtown Park for years. When I would walk by Park Place I thought, I am a senior but don’t have any desire to go in. When I finally went through the door a year ago to sign up for a premium-lowering defensive driving class, destiny stepped in and changed my life. The energy was warm, inviting, and friendly. I met the gracious Marilyn Bergdoll, the Recreation Leader. Down the hall, I heard beautiful singing. Marilyn told me The Park Place Social Singers were rehearsing and asked if I enjoyed music and singing. I do! I attended my first singalong the following Tuesday morning and immediately felt a part of my new singing community. As the months went by I eventually was able to sit instead of standing during rehearsal. The vibration of singing is magical and energizes me to the core. My physical healing was also healing my spirit and soul, giving me hope that I would be able to pursue a new path. I just had to figure out what that passion was. I thought, I'd just keep singing until something unfolds. My patience paid off and I was fortunate to realize my passion for writing. When I began my writing career last year, I thought, "I will keep on singing and see what infinite possibilities the Universe has in store for me!" 42
