Loads of fresh fruit and warm biscuits bookended a breakfast buffet with fresh ground coffee from sponsor, Georgia’s own small farmer coffee roaster, Cafe Campesino, served piping hot all day. On one of the many “field trips” offered, I visited the bucolic Bella Luna Sheep & Wool Co in Tignall, Georgia. While the others talked about best practices for raising sheep (“I love birthing lambs. I get right up there and bring that baby into the world…”) I breathed in the damp mossy air and decided I needed to get out of the city and live on a farm. These people touch the earth and the earth touches them every single day.  At Happy Wife Farm in Modoc, S.C., a school bus has been repurposed into a chicken coop, a moveable roost that keeps the farm yard and lawn evenly trimmed and utilized. “We let the animals and the

I learned so much from the passionate professionals who led workshops and seminars. My respect for farmers is immense. Georgia Organics is campaigning to certify 200 farmers as “organic,” by the year’s end, and the crowd gave a standing ovation for the 160 who already went through the process to earn the blue ribbon certification status.

FIND YOUR BEST BRAIN After researching the positive and lasting effects of neurofeedback therapy, Dr. Candace Holmes decided to offer it in her office. Neurofeedback therapy is also known as EEG biofeedback. It helps patients retrain their brains using computer software so that their brains function at maximum potential. Prestigious universities such as Harvard, UCLA, and Stanford have researched neurofeedback therapy’s efficacy for more than 40 years on many neurological conditions including ADD/ADHD, anxiety, depression, insomnia, migraine headaches, chronic pain, and fibromyalgia just to name a few. It is a learning modality that is painless, drug-free, and non-invasive. It is considered safe and effective for both children and adults. The goal of neurofeedback is to transform an unhealthy, dysregulated brainwave pattern into a normal, healthy, organized pattern. Research demonstrates that dysregulated brainwave patterns may cause neurological symptoms. Dr. Holmes, D.C. is a certified BrainCore practitioner at BrainCore of Duluth in Duluth, Georgia. HISTORY GURU? In May 1918, U.S. troops, commonly known as the Doughboys, fought in their first major battle in Europe during World War I. The war was a turning point in U.S. history, establishing the nation’s influence and prosperity in the 20th century. By the end of combat in November 1918, more than 4 million Americans served. Now, 100 years later, "Fields of Battle, Lands of Peace: The Doughboys, 19171918," an outdoor photography exhibition opening March 16, 2018, in the Atlanta’s

FOR THOSE WHO STRUGGLE WITH DEPRESSION OR PAIN, OFTENTIMES GETTING LUKEWARM RESULTS WITH THEIR CURRENT MEDICATION, KETAMINE MIGHT BE THE ANSWER. Widely used in hospitals for anesthesia, it is on the World Health Organization’s list of essential medicines and was approved for use by the FDA in 1970. “We have people who come in after years of seeing multiple doctors and trying several different drugs without the results they want,” says Angelo Sambunaris, M.D., C.P.I., a psychiatrist, researcher and founder of Trek Medical. The clinic is one of a handful of centers that provides intravenous Ketamine infusions for people struggling with major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, PTSD, chronic pain and substance abuse. Dr. Sambunaris has been a leader in the field of clinical research for over two decades, leading over 200 medical research studies since his early days as a Clinical Staff Fellow at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).  It was that experience that brought him to Ketamine, a cutting-edge treatment option that works differently than medications like Prozac, Effexor, Paxil or Cymbalta – ironically all medications that he helped bring to market.   “The reality is that only 33% of patients treated with an antidepressant achieve remission. Ketamine offers a completely new way of changing how the brain manages mood. Unlike antidepressants, which work by shifting the balance of brain chemicals like serotonin and dopamine, Ketamine is thought to change the way brain cells communicate with each other. Ketamine blocks a brain receptor known as NMDA and also acts on other brain receptors like opioid receptors, which affect pain and depression,” says  Sambunaris.  “Moreover, it can help repair the connections that have been damaged by stress over the years, supporting the ultimate goal of brain health and wellness.” What is most exciting for patients is the rapid onset of effectiveness. Depressive symptoms tend to improve within just 24 to 72 hours—a huge improvement over the 6-12 week waiting period of other medications. Additionally, Ketamine’s success rate of 85% is almost double that of traditional antidepressants (45%).  That is not to say that Ketamine is right for every patient.  “Every patient is different, and it is critical that they seek help from medical providers who can provide a variety of options to meet their unique needs,” says Sambunaris.  “I would encourage everyone who continues to grapple with their depression or pain to keep seeking help until they get the quality of life they deserve.”

GROWING COMMUNITY IN THE GARDEN ARTICLE CARRIE WHITNEY | PHOTOGRAPHY FREDRIK BRAUER

MOST DAYS, NEWTOWN PARK TEEMS WITH RUNNERS, WALKERS, YOUNG ATHLETES, DOGS AND DOG LOVERS. Perhaps less visible to the average park visitor is the community garden of 41 plots where local residents grow crops, share their best gardening tips with each other and experience the joy of fresh vegetables. The Newtown Park Community Garden sprouted from the idea of eight people working together as a project team during the inaugural year of Leadership Johns Creek.  “Together they planned the concept, raised the funds, partnered with the City of Johns Creek for the land at Newtown Park, ordered the supplies and built the garden beds,” says founding member Cindy Eade. “The fencing was contracted out, but everything inside the fence was accomplished with volunteer manpower.” The garden launched in 2010 and was expanded six years later. It is managed by the Johns Creek Garden Association, a membership organization that oversees operations and allows all members equal voting rights. Members, who must be Johns Creek residents, pay a small annual fee for permission to manage a 4-by-8-ft. plot, agree to abide by garden rules and put in volunteer hours toward garden maintenance.  While the rules forbid the sale of produce grown onsite, gardeners benefit from consuming it themselves or sharing it with friends and family. For the times when everyone’s crops seem to ripen at the same time, gardeners can put surplus produce into a collection basket, which is delivered to North Fulton Community Charities.  “People enjoy community gardening for a variety of reasons,” says Eade. “They have too much shade in their yards to grow vegetables, they have too small or no yard in which to garden, they want to know exactly how their food is grown, they enjoy the community aspect and meeting new people, and they enjoy the exercise and being outside.” Martha Young shares a plot with her boyfriend, Wes Eisenberg, a privilege she sought for four years before winning the annual lottery in which all applicants, including current members, must participate.  “I did a happy dance when I finally was assigned a plot in 2017,” she says. “Both Wes and I grew up gardening and get great joy growing our own vegetables. We have met a few people from the community, which is nice, but the main benefit is planting something from seed and seeing it flourish.” Young and Eisenberg pack in as many types of crops as they can, such as tomatoes, peppers, kale, swish chard, onions, cilantro, cabbage, broccoli, arugula, lettuce and green beans. They even grow cucumbers on a tomato cage.  At the beginning of the summer growing season, gardeners receive garden soil and mulch.  They also have unlimited access to a water source right inside the garden, according to Pamela Donan, who calls herself an avid novice gardener. Having managed a plot for three years, she offered advice about becoming a better grower.  “Engage in conversation with your local nurseries and fellow gardeners,” she says. “Read almanacs, and be mindful of what your garden is saying to you.” This may involve looking for signs to alter your watering frequency or knowing when to start pruning or harvesting. And when participating in a community garden, consideration must be given to the crops of others as well as one’s own. “We do have rules provided by the association,” says Donan. “When followed, all gardens are well maintained. Plants should not grow overly large preventing passage through the walkways and blocking sun from fellow gardeners plots.  Be mindful and respectful of others and of the good earth and ground on loan to us!”  Applications for garden plots are accepted Feb. 15 to March 15 each year. While the registration period for 2018 has passed, a visit to the garden, which is located behind the bocce ball court, this spring or summer just might get you inspired to put your name in the plot lottery next year.

LOCAL LIMELIGHT

THE EYES HAVE IT DEKA LASH JOHNS CREEK BRINGS HIGH END EYELASH BOUTIQUE TO NORTH METRO AREA.

ARTICLE MARIA SMITH

WHEN YOU WALK INTO THE BRIGHT AND CHEERY DEKA LASH JOHNS CREEK, YOU FEEL AT HOME. Greeted by smiling, welcoming faces, there is an air of friendliness not often found in high-end beauty boutiques. Technicians at Deka Lash Johns Creek are some of the best in the business. They seem to know the perfect length lash for each client and don’t hesitate to take more time to make sure the extensions are perfect. It appears these technicians look at themselves more as artists than just beauticians. They help each of their clients walk out of the salon feeling and looking fantastic. From the ergonomically-designed beds to the softest blankets ever, you will feel beyond comfortable at Deka Lash. You may just even fall asleep! The technicians are focused on doing what’s best for each client and they do their job well. They take the time to give advice and make sure your natural eyelashes remain healthy. Cornell Lewis opened Deka Lash Johns Creek to fill a need. After his mother moved into the community he loved the small but upscale feel of it. However, he noticed women still had to battle traffic to Buckhead to receive some of their high-end services. Not anymore! Cornell, a married father of a 3-year-old daughter, is a mechanical engineer by trade. He studied the business trends and realized eyelash extensions were a smart move for his wallet as well as the overall community. It became a win-win situation and Deka Lash Johns Creek was born! 26

DRIVER’S NOTEBOOK

ECO-FRIENDLY 4-DOOR THE 2018 TOYOTA AVALON HYBRID LIMITED ARTICLE DENNIS MALCOLM BYRON PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF NISSAN AND TOYOTA

TO GARNER THE CLASSIFICATION AS “ECO-FRIENDLY,” THERE IS A VERY POPULAR MISCONCEPTION THAT AN AUTOMOBILE HAS TO BE SMALL, CONSERVATIVE IN DESIGN, AND LACKING LUXURIOUS AMENITIES. The 2018 Toyota Avalon Hybrid Limited successfully disproves these assumptions. This large, four-door sedan immediately catches the eye with its aerodynamic frame, tinted windows, curvaceous grille, 17-inch alloy wheels, a power moonroof, HID quadrabeam headlights and long wheelbase to comfortably fit five adults.  The interior maintains the Avalon’s attractiveness thanks to plush leather, ventilated seating; a leather-trimmed steering wheel with multi-function controls; a push-button start complete with a smart key system for effortless departure; power rear-window sunshades; and trizone climate control with rear-seat heating also equipped with ventilation.

GAS MILEAGE 40 city/39 highway/40 combined

Technologically savvy, this Hybrid’s seven-inch touchscreen vibrantly displays integrated navigation and a fully stocked App Suite, plus a USB port and Bluetooth connectivity amplified by an Entune Premium JBL audio system with 11 GreenEdge speakers to ensure optimal entertainment and convenience. Acknowledging all passengers are precious cargo, there is a plethora of safety features as well. Everything from Toyota’s stellar Safety Sense System featuring a blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert with steering assist, to a state-of-the-art pre-collision system including smart stop braking to keep the stress levels of drivers low regarding possible dangers on the road. This collective has earned a five-star safety ranking.  With electric power steering conducting three available driving modes—EV (totally electric for short drives and reduced noise), Eco for optimal gas conservation, and Sport for a more aggressive acceleration and handling—the feel for the road is still cloud-like. The impressive Hybrid Synergy Drive is powered by a 2.5-Liter 4-Cylinder ECVT Hybrid engine power while still maintaining an impressive 40 combined 40 miles per gallon to stretch out station visits on family trips.  Ultimately, the Avalon trim has wowed auto enthusiasts since its introduction in 1994, and the 2018 Hybrid proves it only gets better— and more environmentally sound—with time.  28

PARTING THOUGHTS

CELEBRATING OUR DIVERSITY THE CITY OF JOHNS CREEK WILL HOST ITS FIRST INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL ON APRIL 21. The festival will include food, drinks, performance art, and vendors representing cultures from around the world. This event is being presented in partnership with Leadership Johns Creek, Johns Creek Arts Center, and the Johns Creek Convention and Visitor Bureau. Johns Creek comprises an international population of approximately 25 percent, primarily from India, China and South Korea.  According to the financial advisory website WalletHub.com, Johns Creek is listed as the ninth most diverse small city in the United States for 2017. The Johns Creek International Festival – Taste of the World – is an idea created by the Johns Creek Cultural Diversity Task Force, which met between November 2016 and May 2017. “The City Council and I are excited about the first Johns Creek International Festival this spring,” says  Mayor Mike Bodker. “Johns Creek is one of the most diverse cities in the nation. We view that as one of our greatest strengths, and we look forward to another great opportunity to share cultures, learn and grow.” The purpose of the Cultural Diversity Task Force was to identify ways to embrace the many cultural ethnicities of Johns Creek. The main focus of the task force was to foster a holistic sense of community across Johns Creek while highlighting the City’s cultural and ethnic diversity.  The task force envisioned the festival as a way to increase the awareness of and to celebrate different cultures and traditions found in Johns Creek and the metro area.  The Festival will be held at Heisman Field, located across from the  Atlanta Athletic Club, 1930 Bobby Jones Dr.  The Johns Creek International Festival will serve as a fun, inclusive way to draw the community together. This event will provide a unique opportunity for residents and the broader community to learn about and experience different cultures through the sharing of food, performance art and more. For more information about the Johns Creek International Festival, as well as vendor and sponsorship opportunities, please visit JCInternationalFest.com. 34

Welcome Dr. Tom LaGree

We would like to welcome Dr. Tom LaGree, our newest addition to the Children’s Dental Zone Team! After graduating from the Buffalo School of Dental Medicine he went on to specialize in pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit. After realizing he didn’t like the cold, he migrated to Atlanta. Dr. Tom’s charismatic and upbeat personality fits in perfectly with our dream team of doctors. Drs. King, Lulu and Procter are so excited to welcome him on board. Dr. Tom can’t wait to meet you all, make sure when you see him you yell GO FALCONS (he currently is a Buffalo Bills fan…don’t worry, our team is working on changing that)!
