Hello, Johns Creek
A
t the turn of the last century, Americans started to warm to the idea of taking a vacation. While their work ethics were stronger than ever, Americans needed structure to their holidays, purpose to their play. In 1874, American Methodists founded Chautauqua Lake Sunday School Assembly in New York. The Martha’s Vineyard Camp Meeting Association in Oak Bluffs was the original summer camp meeting place. At the northernmost end of the train line from Detroit, the Methodists also set up camp, with the This father and son team take visitors intent to edify vacationers through a balance of spirito Antigua on trail and beach rides tual, educational, recreational and musical enrichment on horseback. Thanks, Sun Fire! and another Chautauqua was born. My parents met at this Bay View, Michigan, campus in 1946, where some 450 cottages were built in the early 1900s, festooned with gingerbread and never-ending porches. Two inns, a huge auditorium, classrooms, a darling library, picture-perfect chapel and tiny post office dot the piney campus where generations of families have spent summers together sailing, singing, worshipping, exchanging ideas and making vacation look smart. My kids are now counsellors at the day camp, and teach swimming and sailing, having grown up spending summers with the kids of my childhood summer friends. There are current affairs lectures, painting classes, full moon kayak excursions, ice cream socials and classical music recitals and concerts performed by music students and resident professionals from around the globe. Yes, I’m all for vegging out on vacation and can stare all day at the theater of clouds, waves or dancing tree tops. But, I bet you’ll agree that the most memorable vacations are those that took you someplace you haven’t been…on the map or in your head.

verpacking. It’s a dilemma we’ve all faced from time to time. Whether you’re journeying across the country or trying to fit two days into a duffle - it’s a
predicament that can create quite the fiasco. Fear not, however, your makeup bag just became significantly smaller. With Atlanta Long-Time Liner, located in Alpharetta off of State Bridge Road, your makeup worries have been resolved. Natalya Khapun, a Professional Linergist, and her two assistants have specialized in micro pigmentation, permanent and semi-permanent liner for over 15 years. Their services include Countour-makeup, Eyebrow contouring, Eye Liners, and Lip Lining. After bringing this leading company from Germany to our city, Natalya recognizes that her services have truly changed the makeup game. “No other office in Atlanta is practicing micro pigmentation,” she says. “Permanent synthetic ink contains some heavy metal and glycerin, and some other offices offer this service, but, with semi-permanent, it’s more organic based with no metal.” Clearly, the benefits of semi-permanent liners are plenty, and several of those advantages fall in the travel category. There’s nothing like taking a refreshing dip in the pool and drying off without the strain of smearing your liner. Not to mention that mid-afternoon sweat that constantly eliminates the much-needed makeup on the day. And the worst of the worst--forgetting to switch that liner out of your work bag into your travel purse with no beauty shop in sight. Lip liner, eye liner and brow pencils galore! There are so many colors, sizes and options, and we just seem to always forget just the right one. Atlanta Long-Time Liner can eliminate all of these issues with their simple services that begin with a complimentary consultation, detailed drawing to visualize your complete look, and a two-hour pre-booked appointment. You’ll even have the option to touch-up or darken your service for three months following your procedure--customer service that’s not so common these days. Save time in the morning when you already have your go-to products applied by Long-Time Liner. Get ready and go for the day without the sifting through dozens of pencils and liners in your travel bag. And, don’t forget that your liner will be perfectly in place for morning, noon, or night and during and after every meal. Now, that’s the winner! Every vacation has those pop-up packages that include a nice hot yoga sesh, snorkel opportunity, or evening bike ride. With a service that lasts from 1-3 years, Atlanta

ANTIGUA DREAMING (CON TI N U ED)
We stayed at the Sandals Grande Antigua Resort, just 10 minutes from the sleek newly renovated airport. With 13 restaurants, six pools, wide white beach and 373 rooms served by 700 “team members,” the sprawling property includes a “Caribbean” and “Mediterranean” themed community, with room choices ranging from lovely king rooms in a 5-story tower (the Med) to adorable thatched bungalows and balconied courtyard apartments dotting winding paths between pools and hot tubs and private cabanas. While I was at first skeptical of couples-only, all-inclusive properties, I left promising to visit another Sandals property soon. There are 19 in the Caribbean with one planned for Mexico by the end of the year. If you stay at the Sandals Grande Antigua, you should indulge by reserving a Butler Suite, where you meet your very own butler when you check in (seamlessly) and are presented a cell phone that connects you immediately with your new best friend who can unpack, bring you drinks, snacks and just about anything else you need during your stay and arrange excursions like zip-lining through the nearby rainforest canopy or dining by candlelight on the beach at a table for two. Your suite, a bungalow steps from the beach, will be decked out with Egyptian cotton linens and your brands of top shelf bar choices, a private pool and patio. Do venture off property, where ever you stay, however. The main roads are pretty smooth and in good condition. Head to the northwest side of the island and meet up with Sun Fire (that’s his name) and his sons who own 38 good looking horses. They will take you on a trail ride, passing an estate owned by a government official who

beach where your blood pressure will surely drop even further. In a good way. Grab lunch at the beach-front Beach Limerz Bar and order the Johnny Oink-slices of jerk pork on lettuce, tomatoes and onions piled on a LimerZ johnny cake… and if you dare, the Burgers ’n Cream - a scoop of vanilla ice cream and pickles in your burger. Ask if they have saltfish and ducana, a sort of sweet potato dumpling made with sweet potato and carrots, grated coconut, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger served with a saltfish lollipop. Wash it down with a local Wadadli Lager. Wadadli is the island’s original name, though some dispute this. And that’s about all under dispute on this lovely, welcoming island. When I asked my guide, Sun Fire’s teen-aged son, Jamail, if he liked living on the island of Antigua, there wasn’t a hint of teen angst. “I love this island,” he said squinting toward the horizon like a true cowboy. “Antigua has everything I need—good music, good food, fresh fruit, so much to do, all my family to love me and all this,” he nodded to the setting sun, the clear sea, the 90 miles of beach and the warm scented air of Antigua.

LAKE L Open House
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY SUE G. COLLINS
J
ustin Abshire loves his job. As a realtor, he finds perfect homes for people he cares about. He helps families begin new chapters. He walks side
by side with retirees who want to say farewell to clutter and unneeded space as they, too, begin new lives in lovely homes.
But, the part of the job he really loves is showing houses. On Lake Lanier.
From his boat or jet skis on sunny afternoons this month, when the
lake is calm, Abshire can survey the 500-plus miles of shoreline with his wake as company.
On the perfect day, he has clients aboard, hopping from dock to dock, touring lake houses in search of their next home. Abshire and his wife fell in love with Lake Lanier when they relocated to the Johns Creek area 15 years ago. Their Tahoe 22 goes in the water in March and, with their three boys in tow, they spend evenings and weekends through October skiing, tubing, fishing and cruising the 44-mile long lake a half hour north of Johns Creek. He knows which restaurants serve the tastiest fish tacos and coldest beer, where to find the deepest coves and most secluded beaches for picnics and the best vantage points for watching the sun set over the lake. Justin’s office on land is at Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage on Medlock Bridge Rd. As a real-estate professional for more than 10 years, his experience as an appraiser and residential renovation design/build manager provides him with a unique skill set. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps, and began his career in the residential construction industry, launching a small remodeling company. “We quickly grew into a design/ build firm completing projects on high end residential homes, light commercial properties, and lake-front custom builds. With the unexpected crash in the housing market I decided to change directions and used the knowledge I gained in the construction industry as a residential appraiser,” he says. This experience gives him the confidence to easily recognize quality of construction and detect defects in the materials and/or workmanship as well as the ability to estimate actual cost to repair or replace. As a licensed appraiser he’s worked directly with lenders as well as individual homeowners analyzing market data, trends, and market history to provide an opinion of fair market value. “The appraisal experience has proven to be invaluable with every client that I have represented. Not only has it allowed me to develop realistic pricing strategies with proven results of drastically decreasing marketing time of listings, it has given me a huge completive edge in negotiations,” Abshire says. With a nod to his time serving in the Marines, he says, “My military background is the backbone and foundation of everything I do in real

Goldfish Swim
School Growing
Love for Water,
ONE TODDLER AT A TIME ARTICLE JORDANA KLEIN
G
oldfish Swim School splish-splashed its way into our Johns Creek community and
has local families bubbly about the water! From first-time greetings with the agua to instruction on furthering swimming skill-sets, this school has changed the mentality behind pool time. Upon its official January 2017 opening, Goldfish swim has seen bouncy babies to tiny tots to growing guppies and everyone in between. As the first location in Georgia, our neighborhood is totally embracing this new take on water classes and running (and swimming) with it! Owner and General Manager Mark Sheppell says that Alpharetta and Johns Creek families have already witnessed the difference of this school from others because of the concepts they’re teaching, the passion of the instructors, and the overall vibe of the pool and building itself. “Our goal is to teach every child to swim, the earlier the better!” Sheppell says. “We’re working on breaking bad habits, or better yet, not developing any along with making sure there’s no fear of the water at any age.” Goldfish Swim School welcomes little ones, ages 4 months to 12 years, to enter into the yearround tropical oasis that features a 90 degree, 25-yard pool with various lane options, bright and inviting colors surrounding a large mural of fish and underwater animals, changing areas, storage cubbies, a retail section with pool and snack-time necessities, and a seating and viewing area for parents and guardians. Karrie Crocker, mother of two daughters who participate at Goldfish Swim, has been impressed with the venue since her first encounter with Sheppell, who allowed her to express her concerns and expectations prior to booking the first clinic. “The sitting area is top notch,” Crocker says. “We are able to watch our children, and they are able to see us cheer them on. I am very happy with the establishment.” Striving to promote safety first, the staff ensures that parents are involved in the process, every stroke of the way! With five different groups for swim lessons based on age and skill level, this school promotes gradual improvement and constant success in regards to your child’s progression in the water. Weekly progress reports and an open-invitation to watch every single class are among the ways that Goldfish Swim is making an effort to keep

our local little ones safe before the ever-so popular pool season starts. “We have participated in other swim lesson venues, and I feel like the Goldfish staff really individualizes with each swimmer's comfort and skill,” Lindsay Meredith, mother of a 6-year-old daughter and a 3-year-old son, says, “Parents are well-informed with their swimmer's progress.” Parents like Meredith are recognizing that the instructors are tailoring their approach to each swimmer based on their individual needs and abilities. And, not only are your needs met within the pool, but the staff also recognizes that not every family’s schedule aligns. With various class and lesson options, families are able to attend classes at a rate that’s convenient and comfortable for them. “I also like how I can schedule my kids at the same time slot,” Meredith says. Among the weekly swim clinics are family swim sessions, private birthday parties, and even a swim team that began in early March. “My daughter had her 5th birthday party at this location – it was amazing,” Susan Matt, mother of Diana, says. “All of the children enjoyed the playful atmosphere and amenities provided all by the staff at Goldfish. It made it easy for me as a busy mother – they provided all of the birthday decorations, food, and instructors!” By bringing the community together, one swim class at a time, Goldfish Swim School is ensuring that pool, beach and lake season will be a blast around the Johns Creek area. Whether you’re just now ready to sign up for swim classes or you’ve been seeking a new option around town, you’re able to test out a trial lesson or schedule month-to-month class options that can be altered or paused at any time. With the customer service to match the quality of instruction that your child is guaranteed to receive at Goldfish Swim School, you’ll be at-ease knowing that your little guppie is learning to love the water at just the right pace! “This place is up and coming, and it is a matter of time before many more people find out about this hidden gem,” Crocker says. “I feel that, for younger kids, you cannot go wrong with Goldfish. The instructors are engaged and really want to teach our children. It is hands down the best place around.” GoldfishSwimSchool.com May 2017 | Johns Creek Lifestyle
